- During the Civil War, the North imposed a suffocating blockade of a number of key Confederate ports. The South, hoping to break this blockade, turned to an imperfect new invention: the submarine.

The American Civil War was in a way the foundation of modern naval warfare, the first iron clad warship battle (CSS Virginia vs USS Monitor), and the first form and idea of submarine warfare that also became the first successful submarine attack. This later gave inspiration to the construction and development of iron clad ships in mass production, with the development of submarines coming much later. About 50 years later, we see this inspiration being used in WW1.
