The pipes comes out on the side because the 63 Chevy's have an X-frame. This car is pretty rare because it's a 63 Impala 409 that's not an SS. This 63 is a sport coupe with the full bench seat and a hurst floor shifter. It also has manual steering and brakes. These cars were all about the power and fun. Made for the real muscle car guys. ;)
Hi canibusnj, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou
Mine was a Chevy SS 2-door and had a 327 CI, dual exhaust,Glass Packs.
What i'm noticing is the padded dash??? They were exclusive to the SS cars only! Something not quite right with this car.
Looks clean though.
canibusnj, '62-'64 SS was just a cosmetic option package. Nothing in the data plate had a SS designation until 1965
I'll say! Manual steering also known as "Armstrong power steering!"
Beautiful and rare '63 Impala Lou. I never understood the huge appeal of the '64's compared to the lines on this - especially the front-end. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess...
And that chromed twin-snorkel intake - simply gorgeous.
HI Audie, Happy to read "simply gorgeous" :-) My pleasure sharing this car with you, Lou
I'm in England, I folled one of these today. I wasn't sure what it was but after a bit of googling I found it to be a 1963 Chevy Impala. Boy did it sound good. The driver gave it a bit of stick on our country lanes. I can tell you it gave more smiles per mile than miles per gallon. The car is a year older than me but in much better condition.

Love it! My dad had either a 63 or 64 Impala at one time in the late 60s.
Good memories & good times :-)
“The engine doesn’t rock”, but the car sure does !
Addictive exhaust note. I’d not change a thing.
Great video, Lou, made even better by extensive background knowledge of this model.
HI Andrew Graham, Good point on the engine rock solid and locked into to the engine compartment, and with a rev... giving the frame a nice shake. Like a large Hula Dancer. The center and engine stay still, however music makes everything else on the body move :-) Lou
This generation is just an awesome design. What an era! Great video Lou - thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoy this one Tom Gill Chevrolet :-) You're welcome, Lou
I love it !!! I had a 63 Chevy impala in high school, it was perfect and everyone would ask me about it. Mine was silver blue and had a white top. I had so much fun in that car with the girls, man I miss that car.
Hi STEVE, Happy to read "I love it !!!". Glad to read this car brings back memories of your car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Hi Lou, this one brings back memories for me, my neighbor had a black 1963 Impala 409 he would take me fishing in this car i was 12 at the time 1965. this is a cool car!!
Hi Newton Washington, Good times, good times :-) Lou
Stylish!
Those early 60's Impala's are very nice!
Glad you enjoy the one Duececoupe :-) Lou
That year Impala is my favorite. Just love the look of it. That's a happy guy.
Happy to read this is a favorite of yours :-)
Always loved the 63-64 impala styling. Someday I want to experience a 409 first hand!
Hi kramden, Happy to read you enjoy the styling of this car :-) Hope you're behind the wheel of a 409 soon, Lou
I grew up with these. My dad restored seven or so. 409s. Wish I could have kept one
Hi Thomas, Happy to read this car brings back memories :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Another nice one, Lou! That color looks great & the dual quad 409 is pretty easy on the eyes, too!
Hi TheGunfighter45acp, Agree, this one just makes you smile when you're around it. Look at the car (smile), open the door and look at the interior (smile), pop the hood (smile), and start it up (smile)….you get the idea :-) Lou
Lou Costabile, When I got your reply the video started playing, I had to watch it again!
Of course you know the 409 started out as a 348, which was bored out to 409. The Chevy engineers weren't happy with this.
They went to upper management pleaded with them, telling them they could make it better.
Finally management gave in and the public got the famous 409!
Everything is glamorous!
Nice :-)
Lou. Another great episode. Thanks so much
Hi Vernon, Happy to read you enjoy this episode :-) You're welcome, Lou
My Dad had a 63 Biscayne with the 409, it was our "family car". lol. I believe the color was Autumn Gold. It had no radio and no carpets but it was a cool car. My sister and I learned to drive in it, she kept stalling it :D.
Thanks for posting this Lou.
Hi Rich, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Dads car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Love the sound of that 409
Agreed. A great sound :-)
They made songs about it for a reason 😉
Man that sound was so amazing!

I purchased new a Super Sport in 1963. Same color. But had 283 automatic. Nice car. Like sound of the 409.
Hi Preston Parker, Glad this one brings back memories of yours :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Those rally wheels, while GM designed and built, were added and not available until '65 if I'm not mistaken. They were very popular on the corvette. They don't look bad at all on this car, but I'm somewhat of a old school car guy and I think I'm right. Back to the 409: What an overall beautiful car. That color is "deep water" blue or "night watch" blue, I don't recall the exact color name.
Jerry's car is rare in that it's NOT an SS. In '62, they sold a lot of "bubble top" Bel Air 409's, the no frills model with 2 taillights on either side and less body chrome and interior trim; just an engine and a car. Great video, Lou. Keep 'em rolling!

thats absolutly outstanding
Happy to read you enjoy this car :-)
What a sound! Thanks Lou. :)
Agreed :-)
Nice Rumble and even those headers are of the period, Doug was the guy who popularised the design after his won worked so well at the time.
Glad you enjoy the sound of this one :-) Me too.
They still make them and are surprisingly still high quality headers!!
The mufflers are perfect! This looks like a car from the parking lot when I was in high school, although I can’t remember a 63 with a 409. One guy did buy a brand new 65 Biscayne with a 409 four speed, and that was king of the hill back then. Thanks for the memories Lou.
Ahhhh, good times, good times :-)
Hey Lou. Awesome looking 63 Chevy Impala! I've always loved the 1963 and 64 Impala. :)
Hey Jason, Makes me happy to read I found one you love :-) Lou
Me too. My aunt and uncle had a 64 Impala when I was little. It's too bad they sold it, it would've been a collector's item had they decided to keep it. :)
That's a fun ride for sure too :-)
I reckon so. I was only 3 yrs old when they sold the car. I can't remember that much about the car, except through pics of the car.
Beautiful car always loved these impalas sharp clean great sounding motor
Glad to read you found one you "love" :-)
My mother, bless her heart, who didn't know a VW from a Cadillac, bought a '63 Impala SS, 325, black and red, (standard, radio/heater only options) c. 1972. She never drove over 35 mph, and usually around 20 in town. My brother, unlike me, is a motorhead and found it had been rodded out, cut-outs and the rest. He gave it the gun on a stretch of eastern slope Colorado highway in 1975 and only started to back off when it hit 110 mph and could go more. She sold in '77 when she moved back east.
Hi joemackey1950, Your Mother had great car and nice to read your Brother tested it out :-) Lou
Terrific car - voted the best looking on an early game show!
Hi Brock White, Glad you enjoy this "terrific" one :-) Lou
@@loucostabile my friend how can I get the sound of your car please. How did you get that?
Great show. What a treat to see it in action!!! Love the hurst!
Hi lakggk, Glad you "love the Hurst!" and though this show was "great" :-) Thank you for the kind words, Lou
Wow, so nice! Old school muscle at its finest!
Glad to receive a "Wow"from you on this one Bud Rindfleisch :-) Lou
quite a few impalas made it to Australia through the 60's due to the fact GM offered nothing comparable at the time love them
Glad you "love" them. Thank you for sharing your knowledge mad dog morgan :-) Lou
another super fine car Lou. You're doing a great job.
HI Robert Lee, Glad you like the super fine 409 :-) Thank you for the kind words. It is appreciated, Lou
Very nice car! I loved the sound of that 409!
Hi Martin da Cruz, Glad you enjoy the sound of this one :-) Me too, Lou
Notice the crank for the vent window. Way cool!
Hi John, Thank you for viewing and sharing what you notice, Lou
That's what i call detailed videos, when you show the seat seams too :)
Hi Smith John, Shiny object in a car seat caught my attention :-) LOL thanks for catching that I might be a little over detailed at times :-) Lou P.S. Hmmm, however you noticed that I noticed that too :-)
I had 63 ss in school with a 409 with tri power
NICE!
Growing up in the 1970's I was surrounded by cool cars on my street-SC/Rambler,Charger's,Cougar's-but my older brothers' Dark Red 1963 Impala SS with the 327,Bucket Seats and Console Shifter always stands out in my memories....Maybe that's why I drive an Impala LTZ today??
Hi Charles1964, I'm sure that your Brother had an effect on your purchase you're driving today :-) Sounds like he had a great car, Lou
SS or not, she IS real fine! If the paint is the factory color, I believe that is Monaco Blue. Basically, the aluminum trim within the rear cove was characteristic of all 1963 Impalas as were the triple taillights, and the ones on the SS were engine-turned (ditto the side trim panels with the Impala lettering). The 1963 Bel Air and Biscayne had a painted cove and double taillights. The Bel Air did have a chrome outline around the cove, which the Biscayne lacked. Thanks for showing this to us, Lou! It makes the Beach Boys proud!
Hi iswc27, Happy to read you enjoy this car & thank you for sharing your knowledge :-) Regarding the video, my pleasure & your welcome, Lou
Looks like you know these cars. Why does this one's rear area around the tail lights have a flat gray panel where some have the machined checkered design? Hope you know what I'm referring to.
@@Texas_Cruiser SS Impalas had the engine turned rear panel and side trim.. Impala sport coupes did not.
@@skinnerhound2660 great thank you!
I had a 63 409 Impala in high school,it was a powerglide automatic 340 horse
Hi Samuel, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Very nice Lou. Love the 409!!
Glad you love the 409 Ed B. :-) Lou
The mufflers he wants will tone down the raspiness you hear on coast. I have similar tastes, hopefully you can get a pt 2 when he puts the 60 series mufflers on this. The raspiness will turn into a rumble/gurgling sound. It is the greatest sound in the world.
Sounds like more fun :-)
Definitely agree with the change and sound difference. Those are Flowmasters, right?
Cherry Bomb Glass Packs
Hi LOU
This is a unique awsome classic.
Very beautiful and big engine.
I like the wheels.
Thanks so much LOU for sharing this unique Impala
LOU please have a great day
Kind regards
HISHAM ELFIKI
Hi HIsham Elfiki, Glad you enjoy this "awesome classic" :-) Wishing you a great day too. Thank you for viewing, sharing, and adding to the story. You're welcome, Lou
Thanks Lou!
You're welcome Jeff!
Lou keep doing what you're doing! I pray the Lord continues to bless you!
Hi Antonio, Prayers & blessings received. Thank you, Lou
Lou, Ya gotta put the Hush Thrush mufflers on it. Sweetest sound I ever heard!
Sounds like a fun idea :-)
@@loucostabile - But you've got to tell Jerry that HE needs to do that on that 63', lol.
Dang. That sounds awesome! There is a deep cut in the driver side rear tire.
HI Gene Still, Glad you enjoy the sound of this one :-) Thank you for the tip, Lou
Love it. I'm a Molar guy but I've always thought that Chevy made the coolest full size performance cars during the 60s. Love that red 64 Biscayne 409/4 speed that you recently did a video on too
Mopar
Happy to read you "Love it" :-)
Put love in every passion. Patience pays.
Hi Coll Hand Luke, Well said :-) Lou
Greet from Poland
Greetings :-)
Great car. Love the sound.
Glad you enjoy the sound of this one Olle Haggman :-) Me too, Lou
Rear differentials were prone to destruct with the 409 425hp, if you owned one of these and never had a problem with the rear end you weren't driving it the way it was built to be driven one quarter mile at a time !

My red 63 409 was exactly like the one you have not a super sport it was a bench seat 409 4-speed two door red with red interior had the ultra rare 7 grand tach heat radio deleted
My dream car 1963 SS Impala
NICE!
I was born in August 1964 and I love the 1964 Chevy s car and trucks
Hi Roger Bowen, Understand you have a special place for the "birth year" cars & trucks :-) Lou
How did this monster not set off every car alarm it passed? Maybe Jerry isn't satisfied with the ungodly roar, but kids, put your ear buds on and listen to the definition of BADASS.
NICE !!!
Really nice car. Serious power.
Hi David, Happy to read you appreciate the looks & power of this car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing. Lou
Lou: Thank you for this video! The 63 was one of the best looking Chevys ever made...but I prefer the stock wheel covers and a nice set of narrow band whitewall tires
Hi Bill Hershkowitz, Glad you enjoy the design of this one (with some different wheels & tires) :-) You're welcome, Lou
This is a car of my dreams.
Please watch this video before bed time and you'll have a nice smile while you're asleep with sweet dreams.
Nice suggestion! tks
Remember...you're living in the Salt Belt with this one!
You're right.
Kewl car.
Nice :-)
My dad was killed in a '64. Driving home late at night, hit a dust could and the front brakes apparently locked up, flipping the car end over end!
Hi John, Sad to read your comment :-( Lou
8:56 I would replace that tire ASAP !
Thank you for sharing.
Thats my car !
You have a nice car :-)
@@loucostabile beautiful 63! I so wish I still had mine . a hater torched mine and burned it to the ground. It was the car I built as a kid and drove to graduation and got married in it..i completely restored it in college collision refinishing course and redid the paint every few years. I have a impala tattoo even. I have many other cars but I will never love another like the 63. I still have the title in my name and saved the vin just in case I could someday rebuild my car around it. I had a souped up 400 sbc with tuned headers 2 1/2"dual exhaust and I installed a clutch pedal and was saving parts to install a super t10 4 speed. I was looking for a vette posi carrier or one outta 409 car. The hotchkiss 1 wheeler would blow apart almost at will..i changed like 6 carriers out. Thanks.for.trip.dowm memory lane. Its bittersweet since I didnt sell mine to pay for.my kids. Instead I owe thousands and have no car.i refused to.ever sell. I even lost the wife first.
Hope Lou take the blue convertible behind to
Stay tuned :-)
Thanks, good Chevy Impala/Biscayne/Belair video: Interestingly lots of packages, Dealer /Options , extras,; on lots of GM STUFF. Also, the CHEVY2 packages, options,, Dealer stuff could be interesting, too..(e.g The 350 Horse/327 iterations CHEVY2, etc.). Interesting history on the 409’s......
You're welcome :-)
that is one nice car!!
Glad you enjoy this one :-)
My dad had a 61 , 409 it was a cop car , the State built it for him ,

Hi Lou; I always had a love for the full size 63 Pontiac, Catalina, Star Chief, Bonnie and GP. Is it possible to feature one sometime?
Hi Daniel Thomas, Hmmm, you're right, I do not have those on the Channel. If I see a good one, and the Care Taker is available to share, I'll get those cars, Lou
Big block with a nice lumpy cam. Beautiful God damn Chevrolet!!!. I’d damn near kill for a 409.
Praise be to God that you enjoy the look & sound of this one :-)
That car is perfect cus its drivable.
I like driving the cars too :-)
Jerry kush badass name
Hi true magoo, Happy to read you enjoy the Care Takers name :-) Lou
Chevrolet made the best cars in the world.
Still doin pretty good to this day.
Hi King Playa, Glad you enjoy this one :-) Lou

Superb
Glad you enjoy this one Mark C :-) Lou
The silver inlay on the rear is on all Impalas
Hi Daniel Thomas, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou
My First car was a 63' Impala 327. Mine had No power steering.
His looks like it does
Sounds like great memories Johnny Yum :-) Thanks for sharing, Lou
No it doesnt. That fan belt is only driving an alternater
I wish lou could help me out with my 63 impala car to make it run great again can't trust no mechanics out here at least know what there doing
Hi Adrian, Sorry to read you're not finding someone to trust. I'm ok with a video camera, however I have minimal skills for fixing cars and have to rely on Mechanics too. Hope you find a good Mechanic you can trust, Lou
cousin had one but in white on white
Memorable :-)
Hey--if two round back lights on either side is good--THREE is even better!
:-)
Nice 👍 awesome car
Hi MrMatt C, Glad you think this one is "awesome" :-) Lou
Nice.
:-)
not an original 425hp car, true 425s have a 7,000 tach and larger diameter alternator pulley.
Alternator in '63?
1963 was the first year for the alternator. :)
Wow, so you're saying this is a 340 hp 409 Impala and not a dual qual 425hp car, or are you saying this is not a 409 car at all? Love people who can pick out the small details.
My 63 Corvair was generator.
Mid year 1963, maybe quarter. :)
As my brother in law says in the engine idling could be put in words it would be Kentucky chicken, Kentucky chicken, Kentucky chicken, Kentucky chicken.
Hmmm, interesting.
👍
:-)
Might wanna replace those tires, look at the massive crack in the tire at 8:50
Thank you for the tip.
1963, best looking Impala. Hands down.
Hi SteverRob, Glad you enjoy the looks of this one :-) Lou
Hey Lou ,watching your show let me feel like impulsively asking U ,how long have U been involve with motor vehicles and why your interest ?
Fell in love with the 66 Batmobile :-)

I want it 🤤
That's what goals are for. Hope you find yours soon :-)
Biscayne had one tail light per side, Bel air 2 per side and the Impala 3 per side.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge james geiger :-) Lou
Both the Bel Air and the Biscayne had two lights on each side of the rear end. Bel Airs had a chrome strip outlining the tail panel, Biscaynes didn't t have any bright trim around the taillight panel...and curiously, even cheaper Chevys sold in Australia all had 3 lights on each side (the Bel Air), to meet the Australian requirement to have an amber light in back...
Hay Lou! Super cool!! We love impala. I had a 59. With AC!! Our fAv Inpalla. Check our channel for the Rat Fink Reunion. Great Utah car show with great rat Fink history. Did you know that little green rat is a Mormon l?? Also a 6 cylinder HEMI.
Hey Toy Man Television, Glad to read you "love" the Impala :-) Thank you for the tip on your Rat Fink Reunion. Not aware of the little greet rat, Lou
ah australian 6 ,,,hemi is just the name, not a hemi head tho, canted valve like chevy big block and ford cleveland
I'm doubting it being a non SS 409. That car was built that way by the owner, not the factory.
Because?
I have never read about any non SS car getting the 425 horse 409 in 1963, or heard anything else to the contrary. Keep up the good work, Lou.
Ok, cool. Thank you Chris Pappas.
How much would it cost to get a car like these impalas I'm really interested in getting one

Lou. Please do an update on this car if he installed the mufflers he wanted. That baby sounds nice the way it is. I personally can't stand those fart can mufflers these boys put on their 4 bangers around this part of the country these days. I guess that's what got.
Hi BAtadCrazy, Once in awhile I'll to a redo of a car and usually it's because I've videoed the car early in my UA-cam career and I can do better now (like I didn't start the engine, so I'll add that). I don't have this one scheduled for a redo, however I have some cars I think you'll enjoy coming up, Lou
