How did I miss this one! Thank you Jim and Lou for sharing this outstanding 1962 Impala 409! OMG
Hi Chris, Happy to read you found this one :-) You're welcome, Lou

OMG!! It’s a time machine that takes you back to 1962!! What an amazing car! Jim thank you for showing this incredibly rare muscle car.
Hi J Ward, Glad to receive a "OMG!!" from you :-) Lou
Now that’s a awesome car! That 409 sounds like a beast! Beautiful! Pure muscle!
Hi Joseph, You're right, this car is 2 years before the GTO and I agree this is a Muscle Car :-)
First car was a 62 SS,it set me back $125 when I was 15 years old and I regret letting it go to this day😢.
Don't regret it, you would have beat it to hell.
Hi Robbie Rabon, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your 1st car :-) I think it was Dr. Seuss who said, "Don't be sad it's over. Be glad it happened." That quote helps me with people and things I no longer have, and I hope it helps you too, Lou
@@loucostabile I didn't expect a quote under this video to help me out with something I'm struggling with. Thank you dr. Seuss and thanks for remembering the quote. It helped me. I wrote it down.
I had a 62 283 all red in my junior year in 68.. then got a 63 SS 327 teal blue in my senior year..wish I kept both of them
I Talked with Jim at the show and he told me it is one of 16 cars built and one of three known to exist. Stunning car.
Hi Jim, So much fun to find a special car like this, video, and share. Glad you like this one, Lou
The 62 Z11 parts were over the counter only to selected race car owners-drivers. Not an assembly line car.
Omggg
@@davemontanbeau2883 Thats what I recall hearing. No cowl induction?
@@polystictus Cowl was a homemade deal in 62. The 63 was done during the assembly of the 50 something Z11s.
That is a cool 409.I think it's the best one I've ever seen.
Happy to read you enjoy this "cool" car :-)
My uncle owned Del Munson Chevrolet in Pixley, CA and got one of these cars from the factory in '62. He sold it to Butch Leal who raced it for several years until Chevy pulled out of racing. This was the beginning of Butch's racing career. I watched Butch fire this car up when it was on the trailer. I was 13 at the time and thought it was the coolest thing ever.
Hi vppnbrent, Thank you for viewing and sharing the story of your Uncle Del and details on your memory of this car, Lou
Lou Costabile i have a photo of the car and it looks very similar to yours, color and all.
learned something new today, As a chevy partsman, I have always thought the Z-11 was in 63 only..that my friends..is a very rare car
Hi Bob Flynn, Glad you learned something new. I'm learning from the Care Takers on just about every car, and I find that so fun :-) Lou
Yeah, that was an interesting article ..I was a chevy partsman from 69 to 77 Byrne Bro's Chev in north white plains ,NY. the high perf. days
Me too. Never even knew there was a 62 Impala Z11 until recently. Always thought it was 63 only
Wow ! what a beast of a car, thanks for the video, that's one if my favourites that you've done. I love the 62 Chevys
So much fun when you find / video a car that there are so few of.

Hi HWolfeIII, Happy to read this one brings info to where yours came from, Lou
I had an impala SS the first year they offered the 5.3 v8 motor in it FWD it would run 140 mile an hour love the car was terrific and I also owned the first year for the impala 1958 they didn’t offer a SS back then but it was a nice car would’ve loved to of had the 348 motor with three carbs but that was the first car I ever owned! There is so much more to tell with this Chevy. I would love to hear more about this being the prototype for the '63 where they made it a 427. These were beasts! Have you heard of "Old Reliable"?

If one of the big 3 would build some of these era retro cars they'd sell like hot cakes...
Hi Steve Fowler, I think you have a solid idea there, Lou
I've always thought that too. I think any of us that grew up in the 60's probably just fell in love with some particular make, model, year of some car. It would be so cool to recreate those bodies, maybe even scaled down a bit but keeping the classic lines, stance, you know, the overall package. I think the only thing that has really come close, as far as I know, would maybe be like the PT Cruiser, which is kind of retro in a way but evokes models from even further back than muscle cars.
Depends on the price
@@loucostabile Other than my 1951 GMC, the 62 was my favorite! Love to see them again!
Fantastic car, brings back memories, Thanks so much.
Hi Joseph, Happy to read you enjoy this "Fantastic car" :-) You're welcome, Lou
...I have always been a huge fan of the W-motor...since I first saw one as a kid, I was fascinated by those huge heads and scalloped valve covers...as a teenager, I used to like to prowl through junkyards and peer under the hoods of every 1958-1965 Chevy full-size car I could find to see if it had a W-motor in it...and later, late '50's to mid-60's heavy trucks, when I found out they used W-motors as well...only found 2 or 3, they were probably 348's...this was in the late '70's and early '80's. Fast forward to the late 1980's-early '90's, I actually got to see them racing at Atlanta Dragway on Super Chevy Sundays...then one weekend, around 1989, they had some sort of vintage muscle car/drag car show and races at Atlanta Dragway...don't remember the name of the event...LOTS of rare original drag cars, got to see my legendary 409's race...they did well against the Fords, BUT...they NEVER won a shootout against the 413, 426 Wedge, and 426 Hemi Mopars...Nor against another competitor that I had never really heard much about until then...the 421 Super Duty Pontiacs...I was really impressed..and shocked, really...the Super Duty Pontiacs would absolutely run toe-to-toe with the Mopars. The Chevy 409's and Fords would not...was that the way it was back in the day when they were new?....
Happy to read the details you enjoy about this car :-) Hope you see many more cars on this UA-cam Channel you enjoy!
I was a huge racing fan back in the 1950s to mid 1960s in the Detroit area. A very devoted Chevy fan, in all honesty the 409 could not compete with Ram Charger at all. I saw one 1964 409 Impala beat a 426 Dodge and run 13.08 at 108mph. AA stock. That was it.
The 409 design did not breathe well at all. You really had to work the heads, valves etc to make them run well.
Great days.
I saw Dyno Don Nicholson run one like this back in the day, 1962 and it ran 13.2 in the quarter and that was great back in those days.
That's pretty cool. Thank you for viewing and sharing the Dyno Don story, Lou
12s-Dyno Don Nicholson (underhood, looking over his 409) returned to Pomona in 1962 to defend his 1961 Stock Eliminator title. During class racing on Saturday, Dave Strickler in the Bill Jenkins-tuned “Old Reliable” 409 Chevy beat Nicholson, but would later fall to Hayden Proffitt’s Pontiac in the SS/S finals. On Sunday Nicholson and Strickler faced off again in the Stock Eliminator final. Strickler turned the quicker e.t. (12.55, the best Stock time of the meet), but Nicholson got to the finish line first, winning with a 12.84 at 109.22 mph.
yes--even Nicholson's '61 409 ran high 12s.
Outstanding find!

I was practically raised in a Chevy dealer in E Texas during the 60s and mostly remember the cars from 62 to 70 when the owner died and it closed. Unfortunately, I was only 11 back in 62 and I didn't know Chev built anything like this. It was a small town dealer and my dad was service manager.

@@loucostabile The first 409 I remember that was in a car and not a truck was a 63 Impala SS 409 with 2 4 bbl and a 4 speed. The guy used it as a daily driver and in the days of leaded gasoline, dad couldn't keep it tuned up. Always fouling spark plugs. My dad cursed it but it was a beautiful burgundy car. My uncle was Sales Manager and Dad told him if he ever ordered any more multi carburetor cars, he was going to make him work on them. lol

Hi James Steele, Glad you enjoyed this one and consider the car a "work of art!" :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Absolutely 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
My '62 Impala SS 409 (2X4) didn't have a Hurst shifter like this one does. It was a factory narrow kind that was curved midway and had a black ball on top with a clear upper half showing the shift pattern in it. I had my Impala in '68 and I think I was only the 2nd owner. It didn't have PS or PB, but did have an AM radio and heater. The clutch was SUPER stiff and the 2 4bl carbs LOVED the gas stations. I had to use Chevron Custom Supreme (gold label) because regular just didn't do the job. That's back when Custom Supreme was .42-45c gallon and I thought that was terrible! ;-)

@@loucostabile Back in 1964, an uncle that grew up living with us as an older brother had a black on black 1963 Impala SS. I don't know the RPO code on the engine. It was a dual quad version 409 with 4:56 posi, exhaust cutouts, dual point distributor and he put a hood scoop on in. Traction bars and spreader blocks in the front springs to raise the front end. At Forsyth county drag strip near Atlanta, with 10" slicks on the best days it ran high 12's. I was 10-11 years old back then. I can remember like yesterday riding in it. We'd visit a couple of other cousins that worked at an American gas station and hang out for a couple of hours - at the south end of Norcross. When it was time to go, Jim would unscrew the caps on the exhaust and crank up the 409 to warm it up. With Uniroyal street tires the burnouts were spectacular. Johnnie and Eddie would walk out front to the Buford highway to make sure the coast was clear. We'd pull out onto the highway and lay down full 1/8 mile posi burnouts in all 4 gears fishtailing to show off. He'd let it hook up 75-80 and punch it to the floor. With the cast aluminum hood scoop on it, when pulling to the top end, around 90 MPH the hood would begin to shake.
One of the sweetest memories of my 66 years on earth - for an 11 year old kid it was breathtaking - open exhaust, dual quads roaring and that 409 screaming full-tilt. If I could go back in time, one of those burnouts would be moment at the top of the list.
With street tires and the 4:56 posi it would melt the back tires. Going through the gears it was like the car was on ice. Blew through 1-3'rd in 2-3 seconds and then 4th was 80-90% of the burnout. No BS here I promise you that. John Force did spectacular burnouts in the days with Austin Coil - but he wasn't first. :) It was a cat and mouse game with the local PD, there weren't many cars in the area that could lay down that kind of rubber - they knew who did it and would harass him all the time.
Anyone that ever rode in a 4-speed dual quad posi-traction 409 knows this to be true. The 409 Chevy's were the first factory fire breathing monsters to hit the streets. The others followed.
Subscribed.
@@zangzang1268 How about all the 3 carbed 348s?
@@waynespyker5731 A cousin had a white '59 Impala with 348 3 deuces - sweet setup. The 348 was a baby 409.
The 62 was basically the prototype z11, in 63-64 they were made to be 427, still a 409 type. In 62 it had all the aluminum and goodies but was a 409.
My 1963 SS409 had factory cast iron headers. The dual quads were really difficult to set up properly for the street - they were really designed for the drags. I wound up running a single Holley 750 vacuum secondary on the street - not quite as quick but much more driveable. The biggest limitation was the rear fender wells which could only accommodate relatively narrow tires - a hard shift into second or third could put the car sideways…

I actually owned (for a short time, unfortunately) a 1962 Bel Air with the 409 engine in a four door family car. I owned it in 1967 as a teen ager that bought it second hand from somebody back in the day. Hi StellarBlue1, That's a fun way to get everybody in the 4 doors and more around :-) Lou
3 speed was standard and the 4 speed was an option. No automatics were available for the 409 until 63 and it was for the 340HP only. 4 door 09s were very rare. Just a hand full were made and some cop cars were 4 doors with a few city car station wagons with the 409.

Had to be a 348 that someone put into the 62. Tri power only came on 348s. I have been with the W since 1965 and my dad was one of the engineers in Warren MI at the GM Tech Center. Very nice and rare car-and I'm not a fan of gm. My Aunt ordered a '62 Impala SS with the 409, 4-speed, had a bench seat put in it, was white, red interior. Right before the year warranty expired it was in for service and somehow they blew the 409. You'll see shortly how mad she was about it, but she raised enough trouble she ended up with a 409 duel 4-bbl.
This describes how mad she was about HER car, but she was the same about farm equipment, yard, house. She died in 2006 and the '62 still had the diamond plate embossed plastic seat covers on it. I doubt it ever spun a tire half a rotation under power, even on the half mile of gravel she lived on that she hated to drive it over. If she met someone she pulled over and stopped, got out and stood in their lane until they were passing by at 5-6 mph so no gravel flew and hit her car.
Her house, surrounded on 3 sides by hog lots, but you'd better walk on the plastic runners throughout the house or you learned about it real quick.
Her second husband had the car sold before her funeral. He'd never driven it, he wasn't even allowed to start it in the winter to warm up for her when he started his pickup/trucks.
Even being a non-gm fan I'd own this '62 with the Z-11 package and 380 original miles in a heartbeat.

Lou, saluda al señor de mi parte dile que yo tengo un Impala que no está tan lindo como el de el
Hi Juan, When I see Jim again, I'll let him know you said hello, Lou
... a beast...
For sure :-)
Well, the speedometer should have been round, like the rest of the guages. No wonder, you didn't see it right away.
GM wasn't used to working with aluminum. Still, I think those stamping creases look cool.
1962 was a great design year for both GM and Ford
Hi Monique, Thank you for viewing & sharing, Lou
'63 was Ford's year with the 427s
The dual quad that year was rated @ 409 h.p., not 430.
Z-11 cars were 427CI not 409 and had aluminum front end metal. GM rated them at 430 hp but way more power than a 409/ 409hp.
I thought 409s were dog engines like the 348 truck engines?
Hi Kenneth White "Dog engines" :-) I have to say your comment made me laugh. Thank you. If this is a dog engine, I get the feeling this one will bite you :-) Hope you see many cars on the Channel you'll enjoy, Lou
They have heavy pistons as they have tall crowns because of the lack of a combustion chamber in the head. The intake ports leave a bit to be desired but big port heads can support 500 hp without heavy porting. I have a 62 409/409 and while it is slow compared to todays muscle cars, I imagine in 62 it was a sight to see.
Ralph Husemann your correct but if I remember correctly. The 427 in this car is from a 409 block. it's just strocked.
My question is ? Do these come with the to piece drive line? I had a 621/2 SS red on red with first year 327 stock square four barrel four speed car.
Hi Ricky Johnson, Not sure, and hoping a Viewer who has knowledge car share the answer to your question, Lou
Yes on the 2 part driveshaft. From 58 to 64 had them. 62 was the 1st year for the 327 and 250HP was the highest in a big car and 360HP in the Vette.
Wowza!!
Wowza!! = Winner
Oh yeah 😎
:-)
I question the authenticity of this car. I was under the impression that Z11's were made in 1963 with a punched out 409 (427 cubes). Only Impalas were used to make Z11's, no SS's. Entire front end was aluminum, including the bumper. If this car is real, I've never read about one.
Hi Chris Pappas, The car is real, and bonus, now we both have not only heard of one, you can share this video with your Car Friends and educate them too, Lou
It wasn’t punched out, bored, it had a stroker crankshaft.
@@SLJ2137694 Steven, to increase cubic inch displacement the bore and stroke have to be increased. "Stroker" means the crankshaft is from a smaller engine (look at the Chevy 302 for Trans Am racing). I will not argue with you on Lou's channel, but please educate yourself about cars.
@@chrispappas3750 you are an ass! I was engineer for GM for 33 years. The crankshaft was a longer stroke crank that gave the 409 a total of 427 cubic inches.
@@chrispappas3750 the bore OR stroke can be increased. How do you think a Chev 350 can get to 383 cubes. Please educate yourself about cars!
That is quite something, T/Y.

My neighbor has a 64 Impala SS 409. It's beautiful and it sounds amazing. Does the 409 sound different than the 396 427 and 454?
Happy to read this car / video brings back memories of your neighbors car :-) Regarding sound, I think every car sounds a bit different based on cubic inch, as well as carburation, injector, turbo, and exhaust set up.
I owned a '62 409/409 followed by a '66 Chevelle SS396/360. The '62 was too expensive - tires, gas, clutches, synchros, starters. The Chevelle was much more streetable & Muncie trans was like butter compared to that T-10, also the big Chevy's heavy (Pontiac) clutch & plate. Big difference in engine sound when opening up both the 409's 4 barrel carbs though - "ROARRRRRRRR!!!!"
I have a question Lou,...did he say where he got this car & is it a Harrell touched product? I couldn't see what was on his display poster behind the car.
REALLY nice example of '62 race history!
Hi TulsaGirlForever, Unfortunately I don't know the answer to your question. Glad you like the history and thank you for viewing, Lou
Sweeeeet!
Happy to read you enjoy this "Sweeeeet!" car :-)
One of the last, of the V-8 Interceptors......

It might be original, but those rocker panels look funny to me on this ride cuz those were more of a luxury option - probably doesn't need the back seats either..
Thank you for viewing and sharing your thoughts :-)
Beautiful car

I wonder what kind of torque curve the engine had. I bet it was pretty flat throughout the rpm range. Anybody know?
Hi Thomas, Hmmm, I'm not sure. Hoping a Viewer can share knowledge, Lou
'I'm not seein' a speedometer....'SAY WHAT?!
:-0
👊💯😎💯👊
:-)
Such an important story to cover.
Shame you couldn't have taken a few minutes to pull outside into quiet venue and be properly miked.
Hi Keith D Maust, Happy to read you enjoy this episode :-) Yes, you're right, when you're at a live car show, it's impossible to control the environment, so you do the best you can, with what you have, and in the time you have, and this was the result, Lou
"The bucket seats actually came with the car" he asked? It's an SS!!!!
61 was aSS and bench seat only.
@@davemontanbeau2883 This car is a '62 SS, they came factory with bucket seats. ;-)
I've owned both a '61 SS (348) and '62 SS (409) back in the day and yes, my '61 SS was a bench seat car.
Hi Curt, If you don't ask, you don't know. Lou
Lou please get yourself & guests a boom mic for future vids. WAY too much ambient noise that close mic'ing might solve. Should help you in all your vids.

Heater delete , radio delete. BUT it has a clock and cigarette lighter.
Interesting. So you can "smoke" the competition and time it too?
why put this race engine in the fancy, heavier SS rather than a spartan Biscayne?
Hi Kim, This one I believe has aluminum bumpers & fenders to reduce weight, however a Biscayne would be a good option too, Lou
Immaculate car . Who needs GPS on a 1/4 mile ride.
No need for GPS :-)
nice
Glad to read you enjoy this car Bob Saturday :-) Hope you see many more cars on this UA-cam Channel you'll enjoy, Lou
@@loucostabile , good advice , I just subscribed , thanx Lou , really appreciate hearing from a guy like Jim whos got the skinny on these beauties and that line when you asked "why such low mileage ?" : "it was 1/4 mile at a time " pretty much says the level of collecting hes at . nearly forgot to say , when he starts it up , it sounds every bit as good as it looks .
Why didn't they put a 409 in those early 60s Corvettes?
That's a good question.
She's real fine...
in my 409
I had a 64 chevy SS impala with a 327 with a 30 30 cam and 4 speed. The rear end in these cars were junk. First you break the long axle replace that not knowing you cracked the rear end pig by the caps. Next hole shot there went the rear and ring and pinion gear. Good thing junk yards almost gave parts away back then. After this happening 3 times I bought a 12 bolt and put in the car. Never broke the rear end again. A 409 would be worse breaking the rear ends. That pig style rear end chevy made back in the day was pure junk and the weak link in these cars.
Hi Arthur Rodesiler, Thank you for viewing and sharing details on your car too, Lou
