I like how Abus is truthful with their levels of security. Too many lock companies will label their locks “maximum security” even though they can be picked in seconds or are made of materials like zinc or unhardened steel that can be easily defeated. Hydraulic bolt cutters can easily fit in pockets. The Lockpicking Lawyer has done great review videos of Abus and other bike locks.

I echo Lulu's and Faux's sentiments. Great channel and excellent resource on a plethora of issues related to electric bikes. However, you tend to often interrupt people when they are speaking by interjecting your own thoughts or suddenly redirecting the conversation to something else when, in fact, what they were in the middle of saying had value and merit and was worth hearing out. Please be mindful of that. I feel that a great deal of valuable information got missed because these people weren't given the courtesy to finish sharing sentiments and insights that stem from an inexpressible wealth of expertise.

Nice review Court, thank-you. When parked outdoors, I try to keep my E-Bike in view, and since I ride everywhere in Fullerton, I am sometimes welcomed inside along with my R & M. The ABUS lock system is one of the reasons I bought the bike I did.

Very interesting. A great review. And what a nice bike shop! I learned the hard way to get a more secure lock than you expect to need. The chain lock looks best to me. A cloth bag to carry it in makes sense too. Thanks!

Abus folding locks are awesome with little space taken up, but for real security I have a 1 metre chain 19MM links and a Squire padlock,Yes its very heavy but its stored in a rear rack top bag and the bike is electric so I don't notice the extra weight (10KG)

What you call a café lock has the status of insurance lock in the Netherlands. It has ART 2 approval and is needed to insure your bike. The key retaining make sure that you always have to lock your bike. If you want to claim the theft insurance you must be able to submit 2 keys. Most café clock's what we call ring lock you have to operate the key to lock the bike that is mandatory in the Netherlands for this type of lock so that small children who are sitting on the back rack cannot lock the rear wheel with a foot while driving .

@Eric Knighton - the Netherlands a backward ass country? Get your modal cycle share anywhere near their 27% then you'll be in a position to say that. What the Dutch don't know about cycling isn't worth knowing.

  • @johnsmith8981

For the key retaining you can buy a key that lets you release it from the rest of your keys that way you can add it back to the rest of your keys easily when you lock it.

Nice review. I learned something, especially about the big chain locks.
Riese and Mueller offer (optional) an Abus Bordo top range lock with their top models which has an alarm in it.(i have the Bordo without the alarm)
I also use a brake disc lock with an alarm. Lockpicking Lawyer couldnt open ( a cheap chinese one) without triggering the alarm.
In crowded bikestands those alarms may be a pain, because an innocent person could trigger your alarm while taking his bike out.
Now we need a cafe lock for fatbikes...;-)

I have gone with an Abus folding alarm lock, a U lock, a cable lock and an additional, cheap, motion alarm. All except the U lock attach to the frame for carrying. I expect most thieves will be put off by amount to cut and alarms going off at the same time. Still vulnerable so considering data dot protection.

  • @rbo350

I wouldn't carry a heavy lock and chain on my mountain bike but I would carry a hardened chain and closed shackle lock with a disk detainer, I would wrap the chain through the back wheel and frame and if you had extra chain loop it around the bike or stand to make it as difficult as possible to cut or pick

The best locking solution I ever saw was a bike rack that locks your bike with a very thick bar in front and behind. The only drawback was you had to put in 50 cents to get the key out.

    This is good stuff!
But >Q: Who has the strength or rack bandwidth for schlepping chain weight like Jacob Marly?<
The electric foldables weigh around 45-60 lbs. Budget battery replacement according to how much my "security" weighs?
Plus we have all seen the youtube videos that show people blowing though those cafe lock systems in 45 sec. I can't drink coffee that fast. If a bike costs as much as reliable used car, I do not want to cost $200 cup of coffee via cafe locking lifestyle.

Having the locks keyed the same as the battery sound like a great feature. How do I actually do that? I can find the ABUS locks on Amazon but I assume if purchase them that way they each come with a key that is different than the battery key on my e-bike? Any information on how to actually buy the ABUS locks and getting them keyed the same would be appreciated.

there is a new way into locks involving nail setting guns used to drive nails into cement.
there are u locks that are so beefy i think 3 or 4 inches thick that resists grinders using cast aluminum since aluminum is supposed to gum up a grinder
lock picking lawyer is a good place to check with regarding security of some of these locks as you can have a lock that is going to hold up to cutting attacks but is very weak in the pick resistance.
