Yes, that 'synth trumpet' at the beginning was Cesar, with some post-production on his voice! They really went for the '80s Miami Vice' vibe (as this song was featured in the soundtrack on that show!), with J's jacket, the smoke, the car (a1972 Plymouth that Layne's dad has owned from new!) and the 'bad VHS tape' effects! I really love this cover, they totally did justice to it!

I believe the sound in the background you were wondering about at the beginning is Cesar's voice with electronic distortion applied.

When they did Nothing Else Matters (Metallica) people said that can't be done. It was a surprise when they heard it. Some of VoicePlay's audio is treated a bit by the final mix guy, Ed Boyer who is the audio mix acapella guy but it's their voices. Layne is the beatboxer, next to him was Cesar (baritone/tenor), J None was in the center (used to be a member but got recruited into the US Navy, but he comes back as often as he can), Eli (rhymes with jelly, also known as the Rock God) is the fellow you thought sounded most like Phil Collins, Geoff (deep bass) has an incredible range, from A0 (last key on the piano) growl, B0 as subharmonic, F1 - full chest voice occasionally, rest of the time is subharmonic, F#1 his comfortable chest voice, Bb5 is his highest falsetto voice. He is amazingly good at reproducing a bass guitar. I heard someone once describe him as a large purring cat curled up inside a cello. Works for me. If you didn't see Geoff's solo of Jack's Lament, do treat yourself (and us once more). VoicePlay's Halloween offering is Hellfire from the Disney Hunchback of Notre Dame. It is wicked.

From what I understand everything in their covers are their voices unless there is an obvious note to it being something else such as an instrument, chains, etc. But they do add effects and reverb in some places as an artistic choice. I love their creativity! ❤

Love, love, love this one from VoicePlay! They managed to make it new again and yet still bring the nostalgia. Layne (the beatboxer) killed this arrangement. Great reaction, guys! ❤

Yes, the instrumental sound at the beginning was Cesar, next to the beatboxer. This cover is just wonderful. The tenor who you think sounds similar to Phil is Eli Jacobson (pronounced to rhyme with jelly). He can sing soft and soothing, rocking beast and everything in between.
Cesar did the guitar in their recent cover of Hellfire. It was easier to spot because he was "playing" the air guitar.
Really enjoyed your reaction. I am always here for Voiceplay and Geoff!

Cesar also made the guitar sound you referred to near the end of the song.

Everything is done by them. Unless they can't make the sound they need. In that case if they have to use an instrument or something they keep it in view.
Such as the shackles sounds in Hoist The Colours was a set of keys on a keyring that Cesar had in his right hand.
In Warriors and Nothing Else Matters Layne played a violin in place of a guitar.
Cesar did the synth sounds you heard.
J None flew in to Orlando on Saturday morning to film this. It took them 12 hours put on their costumes and film this. All filming was done outside in 80° humid weather. This was filmed behind the Oviedo Mall in Orlando where Pattycake Productions is located.
The car is a 1972 Pontiac that belongs to Layne's dad.
Pattycake is owned by Layne and former member Tony. This is where Voiceplay and Geoff film most of their videos. Along with other artists as well. Pattycake has a bunch of original Disney related videos with extremely talented actors and actresses.

Everything in a VoicePlay video can be seen, so anything not vocal is shown, such as violin in Nothing Else Matters, or Warriors, and some kind of percussion in Attention. But effects added in the final mix does make for some interesting sounds. Also they can multi track sometimes.

Layne Stein is the beatboxer and one of the two remaining founding members (Geoff is the other.) Layne also arranged this one. I think it's hard to imagine an a cappella group doing a song that is known for instrumental passages - and yet they do, and do it beautifully. It's all voice (and finger snapping/stomping). Listen to their incredible cover of Hall of the Mountain King - it's classical music w/no lyrics - yet they do a stunning job of creating a story and doing the music vocally.

So... I know people are gonna call semantics on me, but I think it needs to said: It depends on what you consider the "founding of VoicePlay." While Layne, Geoff, and Earl laid the foundation for what would become VoicePlay, they would not become VoicePlay until 2012 which is when they officially changed their name and launched their UA-cam Channel. By that time, both Eli and Tony were part of the group. So, TECHNICALLY, Geoff, Layne, and Eli are all founding members of VoicePlay. And Tony is still around. He owns PattyCake Productions with Layne so he produces all of VoicePlay's stuff. Even though he no longer sings (at least with VoicePlay, I don't know if he has a Solo Career or not as I don't follow him), he does show up in VoicePlay's videos from time to time. For example, he was the Hooded Clergy Member that reported to Minister Geoff Frollo in their Hellfire video. It wasn't his voice though as Eli does all the voice overs for extra cameos. But that was Tony Wakim under that hood. From my understanding, most, if not all, of the cameos with hidden faces that interact with VoicePlay in their videos are either Tony Wakim or Kathy Castelluci. It wouldn't surprise me if Cyndi (Layne's Wife) also helps with masked/hooded cameos too, but Tony and Kathy are the names I see when people reference said individuals.
If you are referring to 4:2:Five, then, yes, Geoff and Layne are the only two members left of that group in VoicePlay.

@@ForeverDegenerate I don't really care about the minutia, tbh. I follow what Geoff & Layne say in their interviews, and neither has made a distinction between 4:5 and VoicePlay. They act as if it's a name change, not a reinvention. Growing up. People change names all the time, it doesn't make them newborns. And so do groups.
