most down to earth drummer on youtube, doesn't care about the highest of the high end, doesn't give a shit about tuning or any of that stuff. i've been doing speed drills on an old home depot bucket with two different sized drumsticks lol. i guess i'm getting there
Bro I got the same pearl snare. It’s my favorite and best drum. I originally had some cheap chrome snare but upgraded to the pearl. Absolutely love it.
Leo Melnikov I almost wanna make a ton of accounts and subscribe to him to get him to 200k haha. But I mean he's at 165k so I'd have to make a lot of accounts. I guess I'll just wait a while then.
Nice content man I liked it you're not claiming to be a know-it-all. I came out here to check out the brass I never had lessons either. Just go with the flow always interesting to see how other people do it.cheers from Knoxville
I am guessing that those black hoops are made out of steel, and steel tends to have a brighter sound than brass. Whereas brass tends to be warmer, and punchier. Other good choices for batter side snare heads are the Remo Emperor X, Remo Powerstroke 3, Aquarian Hi-Impact, Evans ST Dry, and the Evans Hybrid. Also, and if you have fixed this since the video was posted then ignore this, I recommend changing the snare side head as soon as possible. If the snare side head is stretched to the point where the shell is higher than the hoops, that will seriously affect the sound of your snare. The shell and head are essentially resting on the arms on the snare stand which doesn't allow the snare side head to resonate like it should. It is also not good for the shell of the drum. Just some advice from one drummer to another. Keep up the awesome videos!
Lars used a brass snare during the Black album, loads, and S and M, you really have that CRACK! That Lars had in his songs now...sweet. I need one of those.
I was wondering if you would make a video about how you tune your toms because I really like the deep tones that they have and I know it also varies with the drum heads but I'm not that great when it comes to tuning drums lol
Hey @joshsteffen! Want to tell something I discovered from drum experts. I had many problems with tuning my snare, because the snares rattles too much. and I bought the thickest head in the world. Tought this was the solution, and it kinda is. BUT I didn't think about the fact that I can't do buzz rolls or blast beats on it because its too thick. And I keep tuning it higher and it is really fucking tight now. And I was scared of tuning it higher. So I went to a music store (a big one). And told my problem. And this is what I want to tell you because I didn't knew either: if you keep tuning your head, the head won't split or spring because its too tight. He said what happens is, that if you keep tuning it, not the head will break, but the lugs of the hoop in the snare will break and jump out and your snare will be completely ruined. Because the lugs are supposed to have a limited area to tune to. So if we tune it higher and higher those lugs arent supposed to get that deep into the snare and they will jump out the snare. So yea want to tell you that because its useful information. A snare drum is more expensive then a simple drum head you know. Nice video btw, cheers!
justinfuzzyhat "The drums we used on that session were my 1991 pork pie black diamond pearl kit aka "mother of toilet seat" and the snare of the beast and the harlot track was the matching snare 6x14" with a remo prototype emperor x head on top and a snare side ambassador on the bottom with a snappy snare 20 strand strainer. interesting note about that snare was when bill detamore made my drum kit he hand picked all the shells for the toms and kicks to bee as "fat" and "low" in pitch but for that snare he picked highest pitched 9 ply maple shell shell for me so it would always have crack and cut though in a live situations. that drum tunes better high and for the application to that song i thought it would be the right drum for the track to hold up against what i was hearing with what the basic guitar melodies were etc."
Hey, could you make a cover of Exist - Avenged Sevenfold? I really want to watch that cover, but not many people have recorded it, but I know you'll beat that easily ;)
hi Josh! could you please tell whats the tension of your toms drumheads (top and bottom if its not much asking), thanks. Im glad your doing great with your channel, keep going, greetings from Chile!
Love it! I didn't learn to read music ether. I play by feel. I went to a lesson as a kid, here play this snare, I said,"what about all those other cool drums?" Instructor said,"not for a long time for those." I never went back.
interesting, ive been playing 16 years now and like you, ive never thought about that at all! ive always hated the way my original snare sounded, maybe an upgrade to that might fix it!?
he was in a band called mongo seven. he has videos of him doing drums in the songs. Its not always easy to find a band to be in in. Work, Time. touring all huge factors. Sometimes people just don't have the time to do but events.
@@joshsteffen Thank you! That's funny, I ordered my brass hoops from there a couple of hours before I came across your video. Very cool, now I know what to expect. ha ha
Hey Steffen! First of all i love your videos so keep it up and second of all i bought a Pearl Export EXL series and i bought that Remo black x Emperor snare head, what are your thoughts on that drum kit? :)
Hey Josh, can I ask how much you would say 'cheapest' is? I have my eye on a Mapex Armory kit, with hardware it is around $1800 AD and wanted your opinion on if you think that is considered cheap. How much was your drum kit without cymbals/hardware and any new equipment you bought for it? Great video
Josh Steffen okay awesome, thank you. Also.. would you please be able to answer one other question for me? It's quite a long question but I would really appreciate it
Dude if your getting a Mapex then get a saturn V , they are amazing and you can get one for the same price, natural Burl finsh is amazing. Its a Mapex Saturn V mh exotic studioease, absolutely amazing!!!!
cassee christian yeah that was the other kit I was looking at. But I don't know, i just know a lot more about the Armory and would be more comfortable getting it, but my opinion might change, I'll have another look at the Saturn
If you're on a tight budget, the Armory is an excellent choice, especially if you're planning on playing rock and metal. There are three things I would not go cheap on: snare drum, bass drum and cymbals. Just a general philosophy of mine.
Thanks for posting this one Josh. I really like the sound of your share, it fits in really well with the rest of the kit. As I'm a fairly new drummer, (44 years old and picked up sticks about a year ago haha!), I was wondering what the device was that you were using in the final part of the tuning process? Could you pop a link to it at all? Keep up the great work. Looking forward to seeing the bonus stuff on your Patreon page.
Liam Mclaren Cheers for that. Checked out the website and where I can get one locally to me. Will hopefully make a big difference to the sound of my kit now.
You don't need an expensive kit. If you get good heads and have an ear for tuning, a cheaper kit can sound as good ( if not better ) than an expensive one. But I'd always go for good cymbals. 🕶
Hey Josh, I have a question, when you get a crack in your cymbals, I remember you said sometimes you just cut it out, does that actually work in extending the life of the cymbal? I got a crack in mine and I was thinking of doing that!
damn that snare sounds good.the whole kit sounds good.
Its so funny how every song you play you look so into it and angry. but when you talk you sound so nice and chill XD
just watched your redone cover of Blackened... I can really smell the difference in the snare sound! Thanks for sharing!
Your whole kit is sounding really good. It sounds like you've done some good things with the mics and mixer. Really love the toms. Thanks for the vid!
most down to earth drummer on youtube, doesn't care about the highest of the high end, doesn't give a shit about tuning or any of that stuff. i've been doing speed drills on an old home depot bucket with two different sized drumsticks lol. i guess i'm getting there
Jesus that's a beautiful snare drum, gives off a hella old school vibe
Bro I got the same pearl snare. It’s my favorite and best drum. I originally had some cheap chrome snare but upgraded to the pearl. Absolutely love it.
Could you make a video of how you tune your drums?
+Robi Bon yes I plan to do that ;)
Josh Steffen When have you found your voice?
obviously he uses a drum tuner
The three lugs loose thing is actually pretty popular, you can check out the masshoff drums channel for a similar method.
That extra long fill at the end 🤘🏼
Nice sound improvement, and you sir, are definetaly a kick-ass drummer!
I love the sound of your toms man
damn that sounds good. can't wait to hear it in new vids (Hopefully more Slayer?)
Joshua Pape Angel of Death
Leo Melnikov I almost wanna make a ton of accounts and subscribe to him to get him to 200k haha. But I mean he's at 165k so I'd have to make a lot of accounts. I guess I'll just wait a while then.
Leo Melnikov If you make accounts and subscribe to him for a few days straight without doing anything else, maybe you could get him to 200k. Haha
Leo Melnikov Monarch to the kingdom of the Josh!
That snare looks so sick with the brass hoops can't wait to hear it in videos 💥
Nice content man I liked it you're not claiming to be a know-it-all. I came out here to check out the brass I never had lessons either. Just go with the flow always interesting to see how other people do it.cheers from Knoxville
Awesome! I have the Mapex Exterminator Birch/Walnut snare with 2.3mm power hoops, not sure what material though. Easily my favorite snare.
Its really easy to tell that Portnoy is a drummer that you admire. Cool vid Josh!
sounds amazing Remo heads are amazing!!! I learned something new thanks man!
¡Love that snare! The black and gold really looks beautiful. Keep up the good work Josh. :)

Legit just playing One on drums, then get notified of a new Josh vid
Lars used a brass snare during the Black album, loads, and S and M, you really have that CRACK! That Lars had in his songs now...sweet. I need one of those.
also I love your channel and your style of drumming is one I'm very strongly influenced by, please keep it up 😃😃😃
I havent started drums yet but i plan on it in december when i get my set this is definitely useful
finally I can hear the josh's sound of the long duration haha..
and why you not use the lars 1989 snare..that is fucking great
Lars used a brass snare during that time too. That's why it now it has that CRACK! That sounds like from the black album.
Wow that sounds good. Sounds like the snare in Chaos A.D. by Sepultura.
2 AM uploads are always nice
Hey josh!! Greetings from San Diego and nice brass hoops 🤘
snare sounds great
Never quit youtube! You're my favorite out of the whole bunch!
And also what's your favorite band ?
Bad ass looking snare.
Black X is what I have also - best head ive used on the snare in my opinion
Have u ever thought of becoming salesman for sweetwater like nick? Haha! Ure unique drummer in a sense! ;)
Your toms have really good tone in this video
7:32 it's called Suede. Remo black X is black suede emperor x
I was wondering if you would make a video about how you tune your toms because I really like the deep tones that they have and I know it also varies with the drum heads but I'm not that great when it comes to tuning drums lol
Josh can you show us where you place your mics for your cymbals? Or did you recently start using overheads?
You can see the overhead in the top right corner. There is likely another one on the left. They kinda look like those thin condensers.
Great video dude. :)

awesome josh!💪
I really like videos like this
Thanks for watching?
The pleasure is all mine. 😊
It looks so fucking cool with gold hoops
pimpin the kit.
I love your shirt, among other things
Hey, was wondering what that strap is for 5:55
What the song at 1:39? \m/,
your so badass josh!!!
love that song at 1:40
+pinoymetalhead good riff, horrible sound.
Can anybody explain to me how the Rev got his snare tone on city of evil? Maybe it was more a matter of mic'ing? Easily my favorite snare snound.
justinfuzzyhat "The drums we used on that session were my 1991 pork pie black diamond pearl kit aka "mother of toilet seat" and the snare of the beast and the harlot track was the matching snare 6x14" with a remo prototype emperor x head on top and a snare side ambassador on the bottom with a snappy snare 20 strand strainer. interesting note about that snare was when bill detamore made my drum kit he hand picked all the shells for the toms and kicks to bee as "fat" and "low" in pitch but for that snare he picked highest pitched 9 ply maple shell shell for me so it would always have crack and cut though in a live situations. that drum tunes better high and for the application to that song i thought it would be the right drum for the track to hold up against what i was hearing with what the basic guitar melodies were etc."
Malachi Roberts Fuckin A, nice.
CRAZY TRAIN - CRAZY TRAIN - CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZY TRAIN
Hey, could you make a cover of Exist - Avenged Sevenfold? I really want to watch that cover, but not many people have recorded it, but I know you'll beat that easily ;)
IMO there’s nothing worse for the sound of a snare than cranking the bottom head.
hi Josh! could you please tell whats the tension of your toms drumheads (top and bottom if its not much asking), thanks. Im glad your doing great with your channel, keep going, greetings from Chile!
Thought about doing a cover of dream theaters Dark Eternal Night ?
what song is at around 1:40?? I was headbanging
Awesome video Josh! Any chance of there being anymore KoRn or Slipknot medley video's in the near future?
that is the coolest snare i have ever fuckin seen
and the solo is nice
hey Josh! its true, you're the best drummer on youtube. can you cover classic Testament- apocalyptic city? thanks brother
Love it! I didn't learn to read music ether. I play by feel. I went to a lesson as a kid, here play this snare, I said,"what about all those other cool drums?" Instructor said,"not for a long time for those." I never went back.
What would you recommend for bass and tom hoops Josh? Because I'm a drummer.
( 4:20 ) Snares aren't the only thing you like to be tight ( ͡⚆ ͜ʖ ͡⚆)
Could you do a cover of Unearth? If you say yes I have a few suggestions.
hey josh! have a good day! \m/
that's a great snare to rip some Iced Earth :)
I'll admit I only watched about 12 minutes but how do you tune your kick/ what head do you use? I love the sound of your kit, especially the kick.
I wish i had the money to buy a drum set
interesting, ive been playing 16 years now and like you, ive never thought about that at all! ive always hated the way my original snare sounded, maybe an upgrade to that might fix it!?
When will you do some Soulfly??? Gladiator, hopefully but any songs will do.
So is a drum dial basically like a small caliber torque wrench?
A tension measurer.
You should do a snare drum tuning tutorial from scratch. that would be awesome!
I noticed there a guitar in the back. Do you play that or someone else. Another thing. Are you in a band.
+gothlover4u I kinda play, and no band. ;)
Thanks for responding :)
he was in a band called mongo seven. he has videos of him doing drums in the songs. Its not always easy to find a band to be in in. Work, Time. touring all huge factors. Sometimes people just don't have the time to do but events.
WOW, sick drummin' Josh!! I was curious where you purchased your 8 lug brass hoops for your 14" snare... thank you and keep rockin'!!

Hey Steffen!
First of all i love your videos so keep it up and second of all i bought a Pearl Export EXL series and i bought that Remo black x Emperor snare head, what are your thoughts on that drum kit? :)
Hey Josh, around the 15:40 mark, were those quads that you were playing?
+Tim Kelly yes
Josh Steffen Thanks man.

+Joel Denning you should be good with that. Look up reviews for it. Mine was a 7 piece, $1000

Stuart Cowley I think that was a "drum dial" www.drumdial.com/
Liam Mclaren Cheers for that. Checked out the website and where I can get one locally to me. Will hopefully make a big difference to the sound of my kit now.
+Stuart Cowley drum dial
What sticks are those? I see them everywhere.
You don't need an expensive kit. If you get good heads and have an ear for tuning, a cheaper kit can sound as good ( if not better ) than an expensive one. But I'd always go for good cymbals. 🕶
+dukeofpearl a lot of is the player too. And yes, shit cymbals will make any kit unsatisfying.
Крутая футболка!!))
Wait so are those proper brass hoops or just brass plated steel?
DAMN you're good
How much Time actually went by in that time lapse?
Can you give me the link to buy those hoops?

Thanks man love the videos :)
Great video, I don't understand english very well but great video ✊
Josh please start covering tool!!
did you place some tape on the inside of the reso head? explain?
+clevelandrum those were rough spots from previous tension
Where did you actually buy the hoops from?

Hey Josh would you ever be interested in doing any mastodon covers?
hey bro huge fan you do great work I havent seen ya play any ffdp don't know if ya like em or not but some ffdp would be cool to see
Wow the difference was amazing! Have you ever thought about covering Tool songs? Would be cool to see you cover Sober by Tool!
That sounds AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not as good as my signature edition Joey JORDISON Slipknot snare 🥁 drum
Tool tease @8:25
Sounds like Portnoy's snare on A Change of Seasons

Josh Steffen Ahhh okay! thanks josh! that black and gold snare looks badass by the way!
Reminds me of Stewart Copeland
i thought you were gonna start playing two princes almost lol
+FXRPIONEER haha! the snare sound in two princes is the best thing about that song. Dude stole that from 311!
