just found an old washing machine motor myself and first thought was to make a lathe out of it : D and first video i clicked on was your video. what a coincidence, holy shit. and now i know that i need some bearings, thanks!
I bought a 36 inch wood lathe off a Old Man for $50.00 off Craigslist. Needed a motor was all it needed. He gave me everything with it and I bought a 3hp motor for $250.00 from eBay and got a 4k lathe for $300.00 all in
How did you fixed turnplate ? Fixing turnplate or some chuck (drill chuck is good candidate with adaptors for turnplates and drawer) is most coplex part in diy lathe making.
hello sir nice idea! is this induction motor you are using? (no brushes) they are 2 speeds usually, lower speed spins both directions. it is interesting to learn how did you get it wired here. thanks
I know this video was forever ago and I garuntee this monstrosity has been trashed by now but you should put a spring on the back of the motor just in case the wood catches. That way the motor won't flip
I think your diy lathe is ingenious and working with what you have is way cooler then buying a future landfill addition

Showing us how NOT to make a lathe since August 23, 2015. Thank you for your video.
At least you had fun building it

Your tool rest is to high. Great job ,i like it.
I have never seen anything so fucking dangerous as this thing. Especially the "Tool Rest"

Nice idea. But how do you control your motor speed, if at all? Cheers.
Some interesting ideas here, but isnt the work-piece turning the wrong way? The way it turns, it could snag the tool and rip it out of your hand

tool rest should be fixed mate for safety
Yea he did say that.... Watch the entire video before crying
That looks like an accident waiting to happen
John Griffiths isn't that is the worst and most of importantly the most dangerous lathe I've ever seen
I liked your coment
Humans are a accident waiting to happen. If you handle everything with safety, your safety will turn into danger.
In the case of the setup shown here, you either don't worry about it or you change the size of one or both pulleys.
Well, its a good start but it needs some improvements. :)
tool should be on the centre of the wood
Are there any schematics to this? 😂🤣
Your tool rest is far too high and should be fixed, but adjustable!
Nice try. Save your pennies and buy a real tool.
