I made one of these a couple of years ago - the "Disapearing Lathe". The headstock, tailstock and toolrest are three separate parts that clamp onto the edge of a B&D Workmate. It turns about a 5" diameter piece. For the tailstock, I made a live centre using the front wheel hub from a bicycle, because of the adjustable thrust ball bearing.
I made one with just a drill, mandrel ,corner chuck and a clamp. Worked for what I needed. I was thinking about something more permanent. This is a great idea. Thanks.
Back in the 80s I subscribed to just about every woodworking mag out. Can't remember which one it was, would have to do some digging. There was a article on how to make a full size lathe out of nothing but plywood. You did a great job
That's very cool! Tommy from The Shaving Wood Workshop is actually working on a full size lathe at the moment. I think he is dialing it in at this point, but it's awesome.. thanks for watching and great comment
Nice simple build, roller skate bearings not something I had considered, will most likely put a quieter motor on mine though, drill a bit high pitched, nice use of plywood, I follow Izzy too but I hadn't seen this project, I will check out his too, thank you
Great job Moy. While I consider myself a woodworker, not a turner, there is something seductive about a tool you can knock out projects in a couple hours instead of build over a couple days or weeks.
I've never try to turn a pen because my lathe is very old and does not except any kind of a chuck. But after seeing you create a mandrel, I think that I may try to make one. Good information and a good video.
I like the fact that instead of laying the drill on its side, you took advantage of the additional throw available from it including the height of the drill handle.
Great build. One suggestion, make the tool rest adjustable so it can turn left or right. On factory built lathes, the banjo (the piece that holds the tool rest) and the tool rest can turn, instead of just moving in and out and up and down. That way, if you are turning something other than pens, you can keep the tool as close as possible to the work piece. That way, you avoid chatter or possibly catching the tool. Just and idea to make it more useful and enjoyable. Great build and thanks for sharing.
+Jack Wilbur Thank you Jack, I appreciate the suggestion. If I ever revisit this project I plan on making a few changes and your suggestion would be first on the list
This is my first time here. I'm very impressed. I'm looking to turn small handles for home made wood carving knives. This set up, with a few small mods seems like it will fit the bill. I've subscribed and look forward to watching your other videos.
I like how you showed the failures, and how you fixed up the problem. Saved lots of us from repeating that process (now, I wonder which bit will break on my experiment? Ha! Ha!). Thanks.
Great simple construction. I know this is an older video but I'm thinking of making one of these. I just had to restore a staircase worth of antique spindles by hand, mostly just sanding. Something like this would have saved me enough time, I think, to build one of these machines. Hind sight is 20/20 😣
It's funny how the simplicity & raw nature of this plywood construction is sooo inspiring! This calls to mind the work of Gökmen ALTUNTAŞ as well as others...this sort of simplicity truly is basic & no one can really say that you are 'copying' someone else, but after time you can see the finer details of the little influences & 'benchmarks that others have had on one's work. Often the influences are indirect & unintentional, nevertheless somehow they remain so. I appreciate you Moy! thanks for sharing your work...it's just s simple and enjoyable like a good cup of coffee & fresh bread! Poetry for the eyes no?
+Moy You betcha buddy! I realized now that when I made the comment the other day I was watching with the sound muted & also missed the reference to Izzy Swan...but the comment stands nevertheless! Keep up the good work!
+Moy Gökmen himself probably would most likely agree your build is not really quite as simple or as basic, but I believe you understand the essence of my comment, & so I thank you sir. Plywood & basic hardware...necessity is the mother of a fine legitimate invention! Have a cigar!

Very nicely done! I am wondering what is the purpose of adding a headstock here? I noticed many drill converted lathe don't have a headstock and they just put a spur or drive center directly on to the drill chuck.
Well Done on the Homemade Mini Lathe it turned out really good, and for someone who is not a turner, those 2 pens turned out really great as well. Take Care, Barry. (from England)
Hi Moy Posting your work is always a risk - everyone wants to be a critic. What I appreciated was no muzak with your post. Also, you used what you had, pretty much anyway. You owned both the successes and the failures - and more importantly to me - you owned the challenges and demonstrated how to overcome them. At one time I owned a Shopsmith Mark IV, I think it was - back in the early 80s. Loved the lathe - horizontal boring machine - drill press features. Please keep posting your projects and please leave the muzak off. Much rather hear you and your tools than some techno crap so many folks use when they post. When it shows up, I am gone. Thanks again for your effort and for sharing.
as a toy maker ,,, i have been using my foam brushes twice ,for years, lol once to paint, or stain , then cut the handle ,and use them on toys and nic nacks ,,, great to see im not the only one ,,,, great project ,,,
Great build! I've been thinking of making a small lathe since it seems like overkill to use the Shopsmith for pens, I will have to come back to this video when I start the design.
PS, Matthias Wandel also has a UA-cam video on making a lathe. His has an adjustable tailstock and his bed bars could be replaced by your solid plywood bed.
Thank you Raven. It is still working great and yes I first went to harbor freight and almost bought their faceshield for about $6. I looked at it saw it was trash.. I spent the extra $15 for a 3M at home depot.
Very cool pen Lathe I think I will make one for my wife for her jewelry work,But I will use a old dremel like tool I have Thank you for the inspiration
Spiffy Moy.. Have you ever checked out Bob Easton's treadle lathe? I keep rattling that around between my ears and might give it a shot.. Yours and Izzy's first though..
hello moy. it turned out fantastic. but you should take care of your sound control it seems that you skip half words in the process please take care of it

YES! I totally agree. Thanks for checking it out
Good stuff, not too shabby for someone that has never turned a pen before. Also glad to see you focus on the safety aspect.
+Bruce Zollo thank you bruce

I'm just putting the finishing touches on a homemade lathe. I just took stuff I already had and so far it is looking promising.
Great job Moy all around !!!!! That little lathe is awesome ,and that custom made mandrel looks to have worked perfect
Thanks patrick. Yes the mandrel worked great.

@Forest Ismael Yup, been watching on instaflixxer for since november myself =)
@Forest Ismael Yea, I've been watching on instaflixxer for years myself =)
I was doing some random searches and this video popped up. I liked it so Subscribed. Keep up the good work.
This turned out amazing, Moy! Another great build! Can't wait to see what you make with this thing.
Thank You Braxton. I appreciate it bro..
Awesome project, good video editing clear, concise, and to the point, and no crappy music!
Badass project moy. I have to wait till it warms up a bit before I can start building stuff but this is at the top of my list.
NICE I recommend it, I'm freaking hooked on this pen turning. I just finished my 8th one.. it is really fun..thanks for your support. Have a good one
It came out great, awesome drill powered lathe! Nice job!

+Neil Hendricks Thanks for the encouraging words Neil.
That was well done, looks very neat. I have just made a similar one and find the drill runs out of puff. Thank you.
Luv izzy's work, luvd his lathe and luv ur additions! Great job
Cool that you implement failed methods in your videos. It highlights the learn curve

Very nice build Moy! The pens came out great too :-)
Thank you tommy!
Respect! Thats a great tool build! I am a turner but never turned a pen due to the lack of a mandrel. More detail on that would be helpful.
Thanks Willem. I'll give more detail regarding the mandrel a next video..
Looks really sturdy, Moy. I bet you can find a lot uses for it besides just pens. Great build, man!
Thanks dave. yes I plan on making a couple of marking knifes and all kinds of stuff in the future.
Moy, the lathe and the pen both turned out great. Amazing work, Thumbs up.
Thank you.
This video helped me build my own lathe and I am having fun with it. Thank you for making this video.
nice video , pretty clever thinking of the roller blade bearings
Great job, but how do you keep the drill trigger locked? Did your drill have a locking mechanism?
Great build! I've been thinking of making a small lathe since it seems like overkill to use the Shopsmith for pens, I will have to come back to this video when I start the design.
Thank you.. I'm really enjoying it .
Bravo majstore , lijepo uradjen mini stroj .

+Tony Wells thanks for the info
thanks, you showed me that you don't need a lathe so expensive to make my dream come true, good luck.
I love these drill lathe videos. The only issue is that a decent lathe tool set costs about $200.
Awesome job great design glad you finally worked out the issues and nice recommendation on getting a quality face shield.
Thank you Raven. It is still working great and yes I first went to harbor freight and almost bought their faceshield for about $6. I looked at it saw it was trash.. I spent the extra $15 for a 3M at home depot.
Excellent, Moy. I've had one of these on my to do list for quite some time.
Awesome! Just be careful.. turning pens is too much fun.. it can grow to consume all your spare time.. lol..
+Moy perez woodshop :>)
cool... so far this is the best setup i've seen out of about 10 videos... i dig it...
+M B thanks man, I appreciate it
Is there any way to get a set of guidelines to build one like this too. I love the awesome way your think on your feet. Very cool job.
Good video. Like how you tell what worked and what didn't.
+Gronicle1 Thank you
Very nice, Moy and I like how you figured out a way to make it work. Btw, good job on the video.
Thank you shawn, I really appreciate the feedback. Have a good one bro

Great build Moy, I was a little disappointed though, I was hoping to see some sweet roller blading action!!
Thanks matt. ha ha. Nope, it was MY my size, lol
Spiffy Moy.. Have you ever checked out Bob Easton's treadle lathe? I keep rattling that around between my ears and might give it a shot.. Yours and Izzy's first though..
+martino amello thanks and I'll have to check out Bob's lathe. Lathes are alot of fun you should definitely make one
Nice!! Gonna make it. How do you keep the wood pen piece from spinning on the mandrel? Bushings? New to lathing.
Great project/video. Talk about motivation to get out there and make something!
Ha ha.. thank you.. and yes get out in the shop and make something..
Do you think sonething like this can turn 4 x 4 x 8' long square post to round shape?
Really a nice build! What's the biggest size you can turn on it?
Thank you, the capacity is about 10 inches or so..
Awesome project Moy, thanks for sharing!
Thank you Dana. I appreciate you checking it out
Love your project. I want to build my lathe like yours, thanks.
+Tom Thomas glad you like it Tom

any way you can write out instructions or what you used. would like to try to make one. thanks a lot for the video.
awesome bro. like the idea of making pens. also great ideas when it comes to improvising.
Thanks bro, I appreciate you following my work.
Thank you very much for the "how to video" just one question please , what is the maximum length that I can make for the lathe bed ?
+jrom hek I've never made one with a longer bed. I would imagine you could make a longer bed but I am not sure how it perform
That is the cats pajamas!! Great video Moy!!!!
Ha ha.. thanks Nick
Hi there from Portugal,
Very nice :D
Thanks
Thank you

Great video Moy ..very informative from the beginning to the end ....
+Repeat After Me Restoration thank you, I appreciate you watching
Good build again. Showed us your thought process - Great. I subscribed after your shop build. Your wife should get that first pen.
Thanks don, I'm glad you liked it. My wife wants a "GREEN PEN". So I guess I will try an acrylic blank..
Fantastic. First of your videos I've watched.
I like it. I like it a lot. Nice and simple thanks
Very nice work.
hello moy. it turned out fantastic. but you should take care of your sound control it seems that you skip half words in the process please take care of it
Amazing job Moy, do you have the measurement somewhere for me to build one for myself?

Yes he does. Thanks for watching
Where can you get supplies to make pens? (Mainly the inner mechanisms)
there are many resources but I use pen state Industries or Amazon
@@moyperezwoodshop1722 sweet, thank you!
Thanks for sharing your idea, nice piece like it.
+Rey C thank you for checking it out
Would this build work with the mandrel provided in a pen turning kit?
Not sure if it would work, I've never tried it.
