I have to say, as an American male in my 30s, I used to think exactly like you did. Altho I didn’t know who Blackpink was before I discovered them, I would have thought exactly the same: “I can’t listen to a Kpop girl group” (keep in mind i didn’t even truly know what Kpop was at the time).
Just by chance I happened to see some clips of them, checked out their MVs and live stages and ultimately became obsessed. I would have never thought this could happen. That said, for me it’s only Blackpink. I can never move on from BP.
I think that’s what’s truly amazing about what BP and other current gen Kpop groups are doing right now. They are absolutely smashing the old school barriers and preconceptions across cultures, age and gender. Truly amazing.
SO FAR, the group has ONE MV that used Green Screen and digital special effects in it (from their debut mini-album, the song is called 'Whistle'). The rest of their music videos used actual real-world physical sets.
The car that Rose' was driving in this video is a Plymouth Barracuda, an American Muscle Car. I could not tell you the year the car was made but I know that shape. It's basically famous as muscle cars go, very distinct. I am not that best at this but I am certain that some actual car aficionado could tell you all of the specifics about that car. Hell, you might actually be able to tell me more about it... lol
By the way, Rose' is the group's best vocalist. I have never heard her rap but apparently she had to learn to while in training, before debut. They learned LOADS of things during training in order to be at least proficient all the way around as entertainers. Rose' is a writer, too. This woman is MADE of Music.
Jennie started this song. Her rap is always great, she is a force to be reckoned with. She is loved, she is revered AND she is hated as one of K-Pop's greatest 'villains'. It is easy to run across controversies about her but it's really just other people being dicks. They pick on her like average everyday ordinary asshole internet trolls. I don't buy into that stuff and I don't go looking for it. It will just pop up because people are just so fascinated by her, even if they hate her. It's all jealousy.
Lisa 'HERE I COME KICKING THE DOOR' is the group's best dancer. Obviously she can rap, too. She's the youngest of the ladies and the most lovey-dovey. She likely has the largest following of these four across all social media platforms. That is really saying a LOT because this is, after all, THE BIGGEST, most-renowned K-Pop Girl Group in the world.
Jisoo is the oldest member but she seems to be the sweetest, most caring of everybody (I think they are actually all sweethearts but Jisoo does the 'older-sibling-takes-care-of-younger-siblings' thing, maybe even sort of like a 'mother-figure'). She is almost always smiling and only rarely complains about things, they have to be REALLY BAD for her to complain.
Jisoo is so selfless it is not even funny. She actually gives her ALL for the group. One example is: there was a time when she had been so ill at a show that she SHOULD have been in bed resting; nobody (not even the other ladies) knew that she had it that bad until they were off the stage again. She felt pukey and ached everywhere and had a fever, the entire thing. Watching that stage performance, NOBODY knew she was sick! She hung in there and did the group's usual World-Class performance, and THEN went and broke down afterward.
Another time, she had to skip the dancing parts on stage because she had really injured her back during practice. She still went on stage and sang but didn't dance, letting the other three do that part while they performed. Already knowing what kind of crap that Jennie gets for the smallest missteps, Jisoo apologized to everybody before the performances even started and told everybody what had happened and that she was actually hurt and could not dance, but that she would be okay. She KNEW she would catch hell for it but she still showed up because that is what you do when you support your friends. She literally would carry all of them on her back if she could.
Can't help but love all four of these awesome ladies! :)

I'm 60 years old, who listened almost exclusively to Jazz and Prog Rock. A girl at the local convenience store was listening to KPop at like 3 a.m., one night. We started talking about music and she wrote down Blackpink on a slip of paper and told me to pick any video just to check it out. DDU-DU DDU-DU had just been released so that popped up first. That was it. Down the rabbit hole I fell, and I don't regret a second of it.
Now I'm actually waiting for a new group to start, NMIXX. One of the singers named Lily has a voice that is just on a totally different level.
have you checked out BTS too by any chance? They have done songs in both the jazz and rock genre 😊 If you like neo-soul, they got those too haha. Practically every genre actually, and their discography is well over like 300 songs. They also write, produce and compose a huge bulk of their music themselves. Their 3 rappers especially are the primary songwriters and producers for the whole group.

Every kpop music video is very well done, they invest a lot of money, time and effort to make everything perfect. Another reason for such great MVs is because in Korea, the songs need to be visualizing appealing, unlike here in the west, that the songs need to have radio play value, there the TV is what makes a song/MV/group have more attention ☺️

Speaking about smiling the entire way, you will smile continuously as you learn about their quirky personalities, watch their mesmerizing dance practices, laugh at their reality shows. What I learned about K Pop, that is different from Western artists, is the fan service. Band members keep giving content, v logs, birthday celebrations, interviews and, as a fan, it is wonderful. Makes you smile the entire time.
I really enjoyed this reaction and your comments at the end about being open to new genres. Thx for that. I think seeing a live performance would be a great next step, I really like the Love to Hate Me/You Never Know live performance from The Show online concert. Their tour band backing them is a joy to hear as well.

It’s my favorite thing to watch people discover Blackpink for the first time and slowly become obsessed with them .
I highly recommend watching „ddu-du ddu-du” and „pretty savage”. The first one has over a billion views and it’s a must-see. The other one doesn’t have an MV, but their live stage is amazing. It’s also a more recent song - from the same album as „how you like that”
The one with the deeper voice you like is Jisoo!
I had the honor of seeing these girls live here in the U.S. They are legit and are every bit as good live. They even have a live rock band and their voices are just as amazing irl. They’re the real deal. If you want a song that’s 100% in English listen and react to the lyric video of Crazy Over You. The song doesn’t have an official video but it’s as sick as How You Like That and Kill This Love.

@@GOTGames I know right?! I was in the nosebleed section but it was still $165 for each of our tickets. The better seats were $400-$1,000 per ticket. I wouldn’t normally pay even the $165 but I was like damn when am I ever to going to get a chance to see them live again?! So I had to. They were so good. I linked a video from it on one of my other comments here. It was the encore performance. They toured the U.K, too, on the same World Tour. Bet you wish you knew them sooner so you could have gone, eh?
I had that same thing happen to me with Hyuna (another k-pop artist). I was like “Damn I wish I would have known she was here!” So took advantage of Blackpink. Been a fan of their’s since Day 1 so it’s been fun to watch their rise.

You can find so many genres from these 4 incredible queens, each one with a unique touch to their singing, dancing, rapping. Overall they're all talented sweethearts.
i see BLACKPINK as a battalion of talents bundled together and the 4 amazing Girls at the front leading them with an arsenal of talents, and at the back the producers, designers, director/ cinematographer, choreographer, makeup artists, etc. and a hella of a budget to fund them. And they are a solid unit taking the world by storm.
its really hard not to appreciate them even if someone says its not their cup of tea, you just have to appreciate how much talent they have. But for most people like me, we got hooked by BLACKPINK

This MV is chock-full of pretty deep symbolism. You got some of it; but maybe you pick up something you've missed. Most of this is community consensus, with some of my thoughts. Essay incoming :P
As the title hints, the song is about not being controlled by toxic emotion. With that, there’s an overarching contrast of white and black - but it is not the traditional good vs evil. White here represents innocence and love; black is experience and reason.
Starting off, Jennie descends from heaven like an angel in white, with kissing swans making a negative-space heart between them; but very quickly changes to black and drops the hammer of truth: love often hurts (and if not already obvious from the lyrics, there’s a gem heart breaking in her hands). This whole thing reminds me visually of deus ex machina, but structurally of greek chorus or narrator, telling us what to expect from the song. Lisa comes kicking the door to “heaven”, with cereal boxes of “instant love”, representing superficial affairs with no substance, quick slaking of desire that leave you hungry. Jisoo’s scene is very visual: many people just see it and go “oooh, pretty” but it actually represents specific words in her lyrics: “cry tears of blood”, an expression in Korean showing extreme hardship. She is the pupil of the eye, the basin in front - tears, and the coral headpiece shows bursting capillaries. Rosé is driving a car with a licence plate that says “EGO”, Latin for “I” and almost certainly not coincidentally one of three parts of self, according to Freud. The other two parts are represented by the two Rosés: Id (“it”, the selfish part of self that wants) by the innocent, barefoot - and again white-clad - Rosé on the road; and Superego (“over-me”, the part of self that hosts conscience and social norms) the driver Rosé, with Ego (“me”) being the mediator between the two. Per the song title, the experienced Rosé in the driver’s seat is hurt by oblivious actions of the infatuated innocence, and wants to destroy that part of herself so she wouldn’t get hurt any more. In the chorus, this is made explicit. Trumpets call to action: we should not be slaves to our emotions, rise up and do something about it. Like… blow up the statue of Aphrodite, goddess of love. Rrrum-pum-pum-pum-pum-pum-puuum. (BTW, that was a real explosion, no CGI. The girls were full of debris. Watch behind-the-scenes video if interested. It's really impressive that none of them flinched; especially Jennie, who gets scared by pretty much anything.) The two rappers of the group go back and forth, giving voice to the inner conflict. He’s so hot! But he treats me like shit. There’s no one like him! But if I stay… Again you can see white vs black here, but it’s shuffled: where Jennie is black, Lisa is white, and vice versa, showing inner turmoil, as one can’t make up one’s mind as to what to do. Role swap: Rosé now echoes Jisoo’s part from before, and Jisoo will pick up Rosé’s in a bit. Colours are important again: the relationship started off with ardor (orange), but very quickly she finds herself emotionally in wintry desolation (blue). Jisoo reprises the killing the love motif: there’s an innocent Jisoo in white, being stalked by a Terminator-meets-Hunger-Games Jisoo, a figure in black bearing the knowledge of future, killing her own inner John Connor. Chorus comes back to the girls in a giant bear trap. But perspective is a funny thing, especially under the right lighting: it sure looks like a heart with teeth. Don’t you dare step out! The symbolism is pretty blatant: heart can be a prison; love can bite you. After a bridge by Rosé, we get the full marching band, and a troupe of soldiers. There's brass, there's drums, the whole thing. I don’t believe this needs explaining: the song culminates as a battle call, an anthem, a bolstering for any and all stuck in abusive relationships, or pining for unrequited love, exhorting them to rise up against their self-destructive emotion, to throw off the energy-sapping fetters of misplaced love, and to start living again.
One of the common complaints people directed at the song is that it is too short; another is that the hook feels “empty” when that expected drop is not there. I personally love it. I always looked at it as an intentional sense of unfulfillment, evoking the echo of the emptiness of heart that the song is about. Another thought (not mine, though I think it’s a great point) is that it serves as an intro to the album it is on, drawing you in to listen further.
All in all, one of their best MVs, in my opinion.

Lindsey Stirling... one of my favorites. She is known as the dancing violinist and has worked with Pentatonix (Radioactive cover is their most popular collab), gone on tour with Evanescence. Sells out her own tours worldwide. Shatter Me (w vocals more of a rock vibe) and Roundtable Rival (violin vs electric guitar yes please) are a couple of her older songs. For a newer one I would recommend Underground or Artemis (crossbow violin anyone?) off her Artemis album.

I'm not a Blackpink fan, but I love this song. And you're right. We all have this habit of putting ourselves, and others, into these little stereotyped boxes and fully expect no one to step out of them. But when you decide to make that step, you get introduced to so many good artists, films, tv shows, especially if you step out of your box enough and start taking notice of things that aren't in your native language. I made that step a few years ago and found BTS, and at the same time found some of the best films I have ever seen. I still get comments from people around me like "why would you listen to them or why would you watch that? It's not even in English, you don't know what they're saying" and I just laugh at them because I know it's them that is missing out, not me :D

When I went down the BlackPink rabbit hole last year, Jisoo the one with the raspy deeper voice, captivated me beyond words. I feel like she is sooo underrated for vocals. I'm glad to see others feel the same. It hits so different, there aren't a lot of female singers like her, but yes they're all amazing and so talented.
