What a game. This one was an instant classic. 2nd insane comeback of the year vs the Sabres. you almost feel bad for the team from Buffalo, but what can you say. They made the Avs angry and brought out the best in them. GG.
You know, we all know the rules about stoppages for injury, theoretically we understand goalie interference, and we Avs fans do get that Benson's fall into/onto Wedgewood was the fault of the Avalanche player. What im wondering is how do we interpret the fact that Benson had turned his direction back into the crease, had voluntarily started his entry into the blue paint and THEN was taken down? If the standard thus far this season is "if you enter the paint, and end up touching the goalie, be it your fault or even the goalie's, then its a no-goal", should we reasonably expect that to come back? All that said, the moment it happened in real time, when a player is writhing and very clearly hurt, we have seen far more often than not an instant whistle to get them help. We all know the end result, so the two points for the Avs is nice and all, and even the loss of a point or two had it gone the other way would have been a minor unfortunate event, but a potential serious injury like this is far more important to be watchful of.
Did not expect Sabers to be that dirty and the refs…were the typical refs, not good. I really hope Wedgwood recovers, even if Kelly gave that guy a little push, he shouldn’t be so eager to fall into their former goalie like that. But hoooooly crap what a come back. They were inconsistent with the whistle for injury call the whole game (Dahlin getting one after not even being hurt but not Wedgewood) but skating up to the goalie in pain and not doing anything is ridiculous
@anordman9659 So by that logic let's say someone gets hit straight in the dome with a puck going 80+mph on the Capitals, as long as the Penguins have the puck the dude should just be left there bleeding and concussed until the Capitals get possession? At some point judgment and safety should come first. Wedgewood was in the crease rolled over in pain where players shoot the puck going 90+mph, can't even stand up or put weight on his leg, seems pretty deserving of a stop to me.
Nonsense call like its probably not goalie interference because the avs player sent the player into him hut it should have been no goal due to the goalie being incapacitated
Wow, love the grind and effort by the Sabres! Here I was hoping the Habs could cap their Stanley Cup beater tour by beating the Avs but now the pressure is really on lol
The refs got the analysis right according to the rules, but completely wrong according to the practical realities of the game. The replay should not have been for whether there was goalie interference, but rather whether play should have stopped for an injured player. The rule states that in the case where it is obvious that a player has sustained a serious injury, the Referee and/or Linesperson may stop the play immediately. So ultimately, it was in the referees' discretion to make that decision in real time. When they did not, unfortunately the video review procedure outlines limited circumstances under which a challenge can be made, and in this circumstance, the referee could only review for whether reversible interference took place - NOT whether play should have stopped for an injured player. Under the rules, they correctly assessed that it was a good goal because whatever goalie interference took place was caused by the goalie's teammate, but this is a stupid rules construct fraught with very easily foreseeable dangers.
First, the ref's were reviewing the play for GT interference because Bednar challenged the goal. So that's not on the ref's. Second, while you're correct regarding the rule, but the ref's didn't realize that Wedgie was injured. The whole sequence took 5-6 seconds, and when watching the reply, you see the ref starting to look at Wedgie, realizing he was injured just as simultaneously, the Sabre player was putting the puck in the net. People are acting as if the ref's knew Wedgie was injured the moment he fell back into the net-something that happens all the time. Well, they didn't until exactly when the goal was scored.
As the NHL slowly becomes the NBA (controlled by betting), they need to be able to sway certain games they way they want & massaging the rulebook & giving refs enormous leeway to make completely wrong calls accomplishes this.
When a player is hurt, they blow the whistle in the interest of player safety, happens all the time. When Wedgewood got hurt, they did nothing to protect him. Luxmore shouldn't ever call a game again until he can prove that player safety is top priority.

It does not matter if he was pushed into the goalie or not. It wasn’t goalie interference but the guy was down on the ice in pain and yet the refs let play continue when they should’ve blown it dead. Refs do that all the time when a regular player is down on the ice hurt all the time you should treat the goalie the same way.
What a comeback by the Avs!! That said, talk about an embarrassing moment for the referees!! You clearly have an injured player who is in pain and you dont blow the whistle??? What makes it worse is the injured player was the goalie! And yes I understand the injury was due to an Avs player knocking a Sabre player into him and yes i understand hockey is a fast pace game and if he had been injured and then the Sabres scored in a bang bang play then i would get it! (e.g. when the TB Lightening scored on Kuemper in the 2022 Stanley Cup Final when he lost his mask, that was a bang bang, tough break play ) But not only does Wedgewood get injured and the puck goes to the back boards and is no where near being a possibility of being a scoring opportunity.....the ref allows the game to continue while directly looking at the goalie who is clearly injured and allows the Sabres to score on the goalie while he is on his back in pain!!!! Absolutely embarrassing, that ref needs to be suspended or at minimal get a slap on the wrist for clearly seeing an injured player and allowing a play to continue for as long as it did! SIMPLY EMBARRASSING Hope its not a serious injury and we get Wedgewood back sooner than later.... GO AVS!!
Ok. If you break the goalie's leg or push him into the goal, then this is not a hindrance to the goalkeeper and the goal will be counted, but if you drive past him slightly, the refs will cancel the goal because of the hindrance to the goalkeeper. Damn clowns🤬
Honest question here. #1. Is 1 regular season goal more important than the safety of a player? Not an Avs fan but it doesn’t matter who this is, the play needs to stopped. #2. Say this happens in a situation where a player hits a clap bomb and it hits the goaltender in the side or back of the neck or head at 95mph and ends his career then what? Or even worse paralyzes him for life. Was that play really that important then? #3. How do they differentiate what calls to make between internal and external injuries? If it was an injury where the goalie would have been bleeding profusely out of his leg would they not have stopped the play then? #4. not 100% sure on what the rules are for this situation but if the play didn’t need to be blown down according to the rule book they should probably change some things in it or especially for goaltenders as they are the ones with the puck getting blasted directly at them.
Not good. I dont want to see such goals, and Im sad Benson scored it, because I like this player and team Sabres. So... I, as Sabres fan, dont like this goal

As a sports writer/journo - I’m speechless, Buffalo dominated 2/3rds of that game, but couldn’t keep that same tempo in OT, great win by the Avs.
Hope Wedgewood is okay. Love my Avs.
Craziest game I've ever been to!
Take that Benson
SIMPLY EMBARRASSING
Hope its not a serious injury and we get Wedgewood back sooner than later....
GO AVS!!
Да, упустили. Особенно плохо, что эта капуста много очков сегодня взяла.
Connor clifton saying NO YOU WONT hahah
The Avs deserved that win.
At least they didn't blow a 4 goal lead this time and got a point!
Another game choked to the avalanche again!
Benson celebrating like he did something. Hope Buffalo continues to struggle indefinitely.
I hope Wedgewood ok let’s go Avalanche with unreal comeback
This a game for the history books. :-) Way to go le vieux Nordiques 🙂
Sabres are awesome
Good crowd tonight!
Living in FTW there’s nothing sweeter than an Avs win!!!
игра как в плей офф
If this wasn't revenge karma I don't know what is!!
Колорадо Красавцы !
Ok. If you break the goalie's leg or push him into the goal, then this is not a hindrance to the goalkeeper and the goal will be counted, but if you drive past him slightly, the refs will cancel the goal because of the hindrance to the goalkeeper. Damn clowns🤬
Friggin Sabres can't keep a lead, so pathetic. Tage Thompson 6-8 and soft as hell.
He's a skill player, it doesn't matter how big he is, he's all finesse. Which is fine BTW.
We want the cup!! GO AVS!!!
I like how this game is labeled a year ago. The Avs sort of did this to Buffalo last year too, but this game was definitely in 2025.
now that's a hockey game
That was a bruins 2011 style game from the avs tonight, show this one to a non hockey fan and theyll end up at the next game
Best game of the season, Buffalo is good now!!
Toews out-bodying Tage Thompson is wild
this is basically the Nashville vs Vancouver game 4 match of this season lol
THE BEST I SAW THIS SEASON
Great game, I was on edge all game long. Also, shouldn't the title say January 2 instead of 3 ?
Sabres fans how do you feel about the Benson goal?
Not good. I dont want to see such goals, and Im sad Benson scored it, because I like this player and team Sabres.
So... I, as Sabres fan, dont like this goal
