Former UNLV Hockey alumni (played with the current coaching staff) .. this program is growing fast and continues to progress year over year. People talk down on the ACHA, but the D1 league does have competitive teams (there's just a large drop-off between programs) and that's why more of the top clubs are doing these cross-over exhibition games, the NCAA programs get to see what a lot of their guys with less ice-time can do, and the ACHA program gets exposure + a measuring stick to see how far they are from making the jump. The main difference will be the roster depth, NCAA will roll 4 good lines, whereas an ACHA program will roll 2.
i dont think people realize UNLV has mostly NAHL alums and other JR A leagues like the OJHL... also their goalie is a D1 transfer from University of New Hampshire...give some respect these are very good players
Sorry the talent gap between these two teams is massive and why UNLV was out shot 64-17 and last year Denver won 10-0. Not one player on UNLV except maybe their goalie would come close to making Denver team
Some tough goals given up by Denver tendy and a hell of a game from UNLV tendy. This is what happens when you don’t respect the opponent for 2 periods. Tip of the cap to UNLV, a very impressive feat!

Not quite... That's pretty much an apples and oranges comparison. The two sports don't jibe like that. On the surface, yes the difference in 'level' is similar (NAIA to NCAA Top 10 in Football, vs. ACHA D1 to NCAA D1 in hockey), but its not nearly as profound a difference in the talent when you examine football vs. hockey.
I played ACHA D2 and, yes, Top level D1 ACHA teams absolutely have studs that could have played NCAA. But this is still a massive upset. In theory, line 4 on DU should be more skilled than line 1 on 99% of ACHA teams. Especially given how good DU is and how many NHL draft picks they have.

This is what happens when you just have a team of kids with great connections and not actual skill. This is most NCAA D1 teams. UNLV have great players that don’t have daddy’s with connections.
Did you know DU’s head coach and best player are at the Jr World Championships right now? Could have had something to do with it. DU looked asleep in the first and got going in the 3rd, and anything can happen in a shootout. Nonetheless, this was embarrassing for DU. I’m sure they’ll punish UNLV next year.
Denver turning the puck over early just killed them. Then they come back only to blow it in shoot out. Absolutely embarrassing. Almost as bad as Canada losing to Latvia. Just Absolutely awful for Denver
Modern hockey is super weird about defense. As is basketball. Denver should be embarrassed, disappointed but not embarrassed. UNLV is a D1 program, so...
Denver should have pulled the goalie after the third goal at least by the 4th. Everybody has a bad day this definitely made it worse for the poor young guy.
Denver should fire the coach. He did a really poor job of recruiting. I agree with one comment up there; in hockey, there is too much influence of the parents who are former players. Probably more than any other major sports. Exactly why the U.S. is not getting anywhere.
As a UNR grad, this win is amazing. Obviously only watching the highlights, but was not super happy with the defensive play, or power play setup.. as I played defense, but amazing job.
Super Bowl Champs losing to the best CFL team. CFL team basically has possession 3-4 times and scores on every drive and NFL team has the ball all game but loses anyways
