      Thanks colinodea. I have been in love with the sound of Moog Oscillators into resonant Moog Filters since I gigged with a Moog Micromoog back in 1976. I used the ribbon to recreate the 2112 intro synth, and played the second lead guitar part on I Just Wanna Make Love To (live version) during the call/answer intro. -_Daniel_

    Although a Moog always has that special Moog character, yet the sounds reminds me more of a Jupiter 8, which is a very very good thing.

    Thanks Daniel for the video! ❤ Anyone who is interested, let me quickly highlight how this synth is unique or interesting IMO:
    - the LFOs, apart from the usual shapes, come with complex custom shapes (the "+" symbol above the waveform button)
    - in the dual VCOs there is a wavemix feature where you can set the balance of levels between pulse and triangle / saw (/which you can also mix freely!)
    - you can program a lot of generative behavior into the sequencer with gate, velocity and note chance / probability for more unpredictability
    - there's dual timbre addressing in the sequencer so it can play both timbres at once or only chosen notes for timbre A and B (which makes it more fun!)
    - in the mod matrix you can use functions to change the well-known shapes of sine, square LFOs into uniquely new ones, or create custom curves for envelopes / aftertouch response, etc.
    - the mixer allows for a clean mix of all analog sources but you can also use the overload slider to overdrive the signal like the classic Moog CP-3 mixer does
    - the delay works like vintage digital rack units in that it's highly configurable and can provide stereo delays with ping pong behavior, filtered multi-tap tape echo-style delays, or reverb + dreamy chorused-diffusion trails. Generally it's a sonic playground for time-based effects.
    Thank you Moog!!!

    Sounds amazing for sure. I was going to get a Polybrute 12 but seeing and hearing this is giving my mind a hmmm “should I get the Muse or the Polybrute” both are unique and cool sounding. Now for those expecting this or any other Polysynth to sound as warm and wild as the originals it is just not really possible. The manufacturing process, components and even the audio we run it through is different than yesteryear. Yes we can get close as in the P5 Rev 4 and OB-X8 but even those have their differences between the original. As an original owner of a Jupiter 8 I can say the new stuff might not get exact but it is “close enough”. Daniel as always you do a fabulous job of putting synths through their paces and showcase them very well.

    The more I watch this video, the more I like the Muse. Hey, maybe that's the main goal here, being that Sweetwater is the dealer... but never mind that. The only two gripes I have are those round slider caps and the fact that the panel overlay graphics is essentially one big sticker. Other than that, it's all rather perfect, and even charming. Like those Bontempi/Farfisa style programmer switches.

I will say that the Muse rollout probably benefitted greatly from lessons learned from a rather clumsy Moog One introduction. There was still much to be improved and tweaked and the preset sound design left a lot of people flat. The Muse seems more fully formed as a final product, and the presets have people like sound design wizard Jexus on the menu. It’s a very good sounding unit and definitely high on my GAS list after demos like Daniel’s and Matt Johnson’s.

      @kaiwetronic 2 місяці тому +3

    • @martinloopchick
      @martinloopchick 2 місяці тому +1

      as far as I can hear from all the demos the muse is more balanced and sound more vivid. Arturias oscs when playing chords sounds always a bit "compressed" not as deep as the muse.

    • @kaiwetronic
      @kaiwetronic 2 місяці тому +3

      @@martinloopchick Well, seems like Moog has done things right and leave enough gainstage to avoid the 'compression' you find on the PB... And very clever to add an optional boost before the filters in case you find the sound bland and need a fuller (compressed) tone...
      On other polys, like Prophet-6 or even Pro-800, you have to lower the oscillator levels in order to get the lively analog sound vintage lovers look for...
      So, maybe, Polybrutes just need that to sound less 'modern'...

    • @martinloopchick
      @martinloopchick 2 місяці тому +1

      @@kaiwetronic I can't say it exactly. I played the Polybrute (OG) and always found that, especially when playing chords, the thing sounded relatively "cheap." I know I might get hated for this, but if you compare it to the OB-6 in its pure state, meaning just playing sawtooth waves as chords, then it sounds majestic compared to the Polybrute. The Polybrute sounds more like an MP3, as if the voices don't blend together. Even though I find the feature set of Arturia extremely cool and over the top, the fact that the oscillators don't harmonize with each other is unfortunately a deal-breaker. From the demos I've seen at least, I don't get that feeling with Moog; I hope I can play it live soon and test it thoroughly.

    • @kaiwetronic
      @kaiwetronic 2 місяці тому +1

      @@martinloopchick No Arturia at home, just seen YT demos...
      The only thing I can argue is that when you deal with a deep and complex synth architecture is not so easy to find sweet spots like with simple things like Junos (dumbproof), and lots of people relay on factory presets that not always show the real potential of the machine...
      Maybe switching off the effects (digital) would impact the sound of the PB in a good way... or just lowering the VCO levels to allow more dynamics (gainstaging)...
      Dealing with one voice is more easy to get a fuller and warmer sound because you don't have to keep space for other voices... That's the reason the AS-1 sounds huge compared with the Prophet-6...

    Great demo. I'll be sticking with my Moog One for now, as this is still a downgrade to the One. But I can understand if someone else sells their One for the Muse. It seems to be more for players than synth patch creators. Not having polyphonic aftertouch is still wild to me. I was about to order a 3rd Wave these days - but now I‘m no longer sure.
    No doubt, without financial and space constraints you gotta have both of those fantastic machines.
    Anyway, deep in my heart I‘m an analog guy wanting lots of mod capabilities; up to now the PolyBrute was my favorite in this respect.
    So I would end up with the Muse, I guess.

    • @sub-jec-tiv

      They’re such different beasts. The 3rd wave has that wavetable magic, plus the Rossum-designed gorgeous filters. This thing seems like pretty and polite VCOs (gnar if you overdrive the filter). Honestly it sounds like Moog making a classic Roland analog poly. It sounds like it would fit in a mix better than some Moogs (especially with the high pass filter on the bottom right).

      Good points in the previous comments. Pound for pound there may actually be more analog goodness loaded into the 3rd wave! Only bring up a technicality bc you said you're an analog guy! I have had lots of Moogs and own the 3rd wave, and I understand the difficulty in the choice. Would I sell the 3rd wave for the Muse? Nope! It is wildly versatile and sounds downright amazing, it even nails analog tones good enough to fool my ears when side by side with my obx8.

    • @sub-jec-tiv
      @sub-jec-tiv 2 місяці тому +2

      @@RayyMusik Me too, love playing, but i was talking about music that people out there can make if they happen to also use sequencers to tweak the compositional process (which i also do). Even just taking a chord progression you've created, and transposing notes within a chord 20% of the time, up or down a 3rd, 4th or 5th, then pitching the results within a scale (which this sequencer does), you're going to come up with colorful unexpected chords that will often suggest new chordal movements and new bass note choices. Ones that can surprise, in a good way. That's what i mean about hitting you in the gut.

    I get the impression that the relative prices of high-echelon synthesizers are like the prices of fine wines. For instance, a $150 bottle of wine probably will taste only about 10% better than a $15 bottle. You _pay dearly_ for that additional 10% of enjoyment. As I sat listening to this demo, I kept thinking, "The tones and capabilities from this $3500 Moog 'Muse' sound only _slightly better_ than what I could obtain from my $1300 AMS 'HydraSynth'" - , and the robust "build quality" of both models are probably similar.

    To a great extent, this is an instrument I had wished I could’ve had a hand in designing (a polyphonic synth with digital effects). It was an idea that I had coincidentally to when Dr. Robert Moog himself was at work, designing and executing the Minimoog Voyager. I probably should’ve anticipated not only that Moog Music would make its way around here eventually but also that there would be a host of other builders taking a stab at similar creations like the Prophet ‘08 and other Dave Smith Instruments / Sequential. Alesis was the first manufacturer to delve into the practice of amalgamating analog tone generators and digital effects, though the A6 Andromeda has double the polyphony of Muse. And, only in the last half decade, the Sequential hierarchy has given us Take Five and the Oberheim TEO-5. Truth be told, Muse should have come out 20 years ago and been a staunch competitor to the DSI Evolver line.

    Great instrument!!! I wonder if the name choice has anything to do with The Muse, the movie. There's this muse that makes us inspired at all times, and cleaning up our bank accounts in behind our backs. I wonder if this synthesizer scenario is analogous to the scenario in the movie.
