How I Spent $13,289 To Make 400 WHP

  • Yes, you can buy a car out of the box with 400 WHP, Yes you can make 400 WHP much cheaper than the way I did this. However; I wanted to be able to do this on the stock block and as reliable as possible. Not to say that anyone way to build a car is right or wrong but with that being said It is my car and this is how I wanted to build it. With the mods on the car when the time comes we can def make more power with a stronger block. However; I am perfectly happy with the car and the way it has come out thus far and I regret not a single dime on the build!

    Quality parts and you get what you pay for is beyond accurate when upgrading an EJ25 engine :) Reliability is everything unless it's not your daily and you accept the risks of course. Once again, great content and thanks for sharing. STI arriving in Oct. and the wait is killing me. Your videos are very informative and I see a quality trend with your take on the build and other builds I respect. I'm going for the STI sleeper and investing everything in the engine and reliability first and doing it right the first time and preparing it for the future. I spent $10K for a Stage 2 forged piston short block (making 313hp currently due to OEM fuel pump/regulator etc) so trust me, seeing you spend $13K to make 400hp speaks a lot to someone like me. I sometimes wish I could go back and start fresh starting with not buying a 07 STi that turned out to have a bad motor but hey, it is what it is. I'm just grateful to have a gf that helped me achieve my dream car AND double down to get a new motor for it :/
    I know lots of people like to judge other's builds with mine being a huge “wtf” kind of story but I lived it and learned from it. I didn't have the garage space, tools or knowledge to do it all at home let alone time. Point is we all have our own stories with these motors. We all know what we're getting ourselves into so don't let the $$$ stick to the car's sentimental value. Keep dreaming and push those dyno numbers. We'll all get there one way or another with each being its own unique story to share

    lol this popped up in my suggested, I turned it on and listened while I worked…then I took a look and realized it wasn’t what I thought I was watching. I first saw the red intake and had to adjust my perspective. Then I noticed the garage and everything else that makes this an obviously old vid. Still a great video with awesome info if you have this engine…. But we all know you don’t anymore! Can’t wait to see the eg hit the Dyno! Tell Bader we said hi while you’re there.

Cant wait to see some test runs with the new map.

    Thank you for sharing - wow, had no idea it was that costly to do this - and just imagine if you had paid a shop to do most of it....18-20k.
    Plus you forgot the quiet/silent bills: chopped hood to replace if sold perhaps. Lost warranty. Additional wear and tear. Add perhaps 5-8k more. One thing you could do for the rest of us: do some serial oil evaluations to see what is happenign IN the engine.... Would be curious if those data and oil change habbits/brands would be informative.
    Have to keep mine stock. Have the Subaru gold 7y/100k bumper to bumper......so only doing cosmetic stuff and trying to only do OEM parts for those (JDM if you will sometimes).
    I predict in 3 years you will be on a built billet block, have 700hp, and will be even happier. Hopefully my subscription and others' will financially help you out.

    Purchased a 2020 and the first hour having it instantly regretted it due to it being so small I had NO idea it would be so small I ended up swapping it for a Charger scat pack Daytona edition and don’t regret it one bit! The STI was fast and responsive for sure and in S# mode it was nice the amount of money having to put into this car to get it where I’d want it wasn’t terrible but just being so small inside killed me on comfort! It would have been cool if I was single and or younger but being older fatter and having kids to kart around it doesn’t make sense lol good videos man!

    Scooby freak 86 did almost exactly what you did and said almost exactly what you said in this videos, (Not pawer, But, RE-LIA-BI-LI-TY) i think the amount spent is perfect, hight quality parts on a stock block and 400hp its perfect. Now, if you want 600 to 1000hp then you gonna have to built the damn thing and not by a random garage, you need experts and professionals wich means its not gonna be cheap either. Btw if you don’t know scooby freak 86 check him out he’s Subaru is as perfect as yours man. Who knows maybe a colab a “Wash and talk” video that would be killer. Overall you made the best decision for your car my friend, beautiful, Reliable, Good quality parts and it can defends it self in the streets i mean 400hp it can move. Good luck on everything else blessings.

    Hey, I had a couple questions that you might be able to help me with. I am really sitting on the cusp of going full bolt on, cobb stage 3 on a 2019 STI, currently bone stock. But I am hesitant to progress because I am not sure if I should get a IAG block and forged pistons with rods, additionally I have heard that the newer STI's have a more robust internal factory design. You mentioned a video or two back that there is a "safe range" for power on a stock block. Could you elaborate a bit more about that safe range? Also I would really like to hear your opinion and others thoughts on the subject as well. I apologize if I you had mentioned this before.

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  4 роки тому

      No worries! So the 19+ have the type RA Short block and are capable of handling more power, not a significant amount more but I've seen a decent amount hanging out stroud the 400WHP range. For my year I have the older short block and about 350WHp is where the car is consider safe for the pistons before they let go. What is your power goal for the car? If it is around 400WHP IMO you will be good with the RA block that you have. Anything past that I would suggest an IAG block and building the heads

    • @roberttrent7027
      @roberttrent7027 4 роки тому

      @@Smeedia Appreciate the response, I am thinking I will shoot for about 330 wheel horse power for now, and with COBBs ethanol set up, that your video convinced me to consider, that may be within the realm of possibility.The road block I run into a lot is not finding sufficient data. i.e. what component will be my next most limiting item. I believe the next would be the turbo then block and internals but past that...? Say you go IAG stage 2.5 or better, that being the closed deck, do you now need to consider a water pump with higher mass flow rate? I think I may be getting into a situation that could be a bit more niche. I figure a tuner can help with this information, but knowing before asking would really help with sifting through the not so great people.

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  4 роки тому +1

      Your stock block will easily handle 330 WHP, i wouldent worry about swapping it out. Once you start pulling short blocks there's a lot of things that go through your mind like while the engine out I might as well replace this part snd that part when it's not needed. If anything get the car to 330WHP enjoy it for a while and if you want more later then you can use the parts you already have 🔥

  • @chron151
    @chron151 4 роки тому

    Nice build, you and I have a lot of the same parts minus the flex fuel system. I'm running an IAG closed deck long block with BC 272 cams and a Blouch 20GXT-R (8cm housing) tuned on 92 pump. What are your long-term power goals?

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  4 роки тому +1

      Solid build that you've got! How much power are you making? 🔥
      Once the short block lets go swapping in an IAG closed deck block (I belive it was their stage 4 capable of 700WHP), machine and build the Heads, swap the turbo to the XR Zero, change injectors and fuel pump Nd shoot for 600WHP with the car. Initial goal was to push ghr stock block as far as possible so still in that phase. But shooting for more once this block dies.

    I currently have a 2018 STI limited edition with a cobb sf intake , gfb recirculating valve , and INVIDIA catback exhaust , tuned by the access port stage 1 plus ..
    I just bought a rev9 down pipe and I want to go flex fuel
    My biggest fear right now is my rings blowing , what do you recommend so It won’t blow

      AOS, Cyl 4 cooling mod, killer B oil pan, pick up and baffle and a good protune 🙏

      Smeedia thank you for so much for your response, I watch all your videos so I tried to learn the most that I can. Wish I knew how to work on my car LOL it would make it way easier.
      The way I’m running my car right now I think that should be good right?
      Smeedia I don’t want to install the downpipe until I get the flex fuel kit that way I can do it all at once with the tune. There’s a few tuners here in California so I’ve been trying to investigate which one is best.
      Do you recommend me to install the parts you just told me to get before the tune, before I install downpipe and flex fuel?

      Yessir, get the longevity parts installed before the power ones. Have to build a solid foundation for the motor to be ablw to handle the newly added power reliability 🙏😁

    $13k yikes. I’m about to hopefully thrown down 800-900whp once I get my motor back for probably just a little more.
    Built 2.7 stroker $5k, id2000’s $500, type x radiator with aluminum fan shroud $300, treadstone intercooler plus piping $600, precision 6870 with tomei twin scroll rotated kit and wastegates $3200, complete Cobb flex fuel kit $700, still need fueling and accessport and such but that is around $1500ish, then miscellaneous hoses and mounts and such will put me a hair over what you have in your bay. Granted I got most parts from friends or contacts I’ve came in touch with through business. Part outs also make building race cars so much cheaper lol

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  4 роки тому

      Very true, sounds like a solid build! I opted for the more pricey route but definitely cheaper ways and easier ways to push power 🔥🔥🔥😁

    What are your thoughts on running the 4 in ETS FMIC over the 3.5 inch? Any downsides?

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  2 роки тому +1

      Honestly comes down to power goals, too big of a Core on a smaller turbo can have its draw backs. What set up are you looking into?

    • @trnql_noir
      @trnql_noir 2 роки тому

      @@Smeedia hmm well I plan on building my car overtime in steps until I can go rotated. My first step is probably Stage 3+ running ELH, Grimmspeed downpipe, injectors, intake, and tune all with stock turbo. Should I hold off on FMIC until I go rotated and run stock TMIC in the meantime?

    So a note to everyone and not to discount you but... all the sensors are just rebadged gm sensors... that you can buy for real cheap from any auto parts store or the dealership. (Modulators not included)

    I make about 360whp on my fa20. All I have is a flex fuel kit and catless down pipe. I do have supporting mods but it’s simple things like ebcs, intake, fuel pump and so on

      Subarus are not the cheapest to make power with but I knew that going into the build 😅 my buddy Matt has a 700WHP SRT and spent a fraction of the cost on that thing. Fun car though!

    Could the FA motor not make more power equally as reliably with this much money spent?

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  4 роки тому

      It could. After the 400WHP mark it gets a little hard to make power but all depends on how deep your pockets are
