I hope everyone is getting through the season happy and healthy! Just wanted to reiterate here, this advice is solely based on my personal experiences and definitely not a replacement for therapy or proper medical treatment for depression of any kind. Don't hesitate to see a therapist or reach out for help when you need it, you're loved and needed in this world! ❤️
I’m so down right now. Not feeling like my usual self. I don’t care to do anything. Feels like nothing matters to me. I’m going to go eat something and then buy some vitamin d and hope it helps.
Hang in there! It can be really hard to get through for so many of us, hopefully what has worked for me can give you a bit of peace.
Sitting by my sun lamp as I watch this here in the pnw. Vit D helps me as well. I've been aware of my SAD for 12 years but I think I've had it my whole life. Mine comes as intrusive thoughts and panic attacks. Beautiful video.
Vitamin D was a huge help for me too! Definitely starting to set in as we go dark for the winter, could probably use a rewatch of this myself tbh. Appreciate the support on this one!
Great video. The scenery really sets the whole mood with the accent of the music that you pick. So calming and easy to watch. So glad you are back man. Have a great weekend.
Thanks so much for the kind words! Incorporated a few different songs for this one since it was a bit longer compared to looping one, I was happy with how everything turned out. :) Always trying to improve! Glad to be back too
Surprised this doesn’t have millions of views. Thanks man greetings from Baltimore 💪🏾
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for the support!
When it gets really bad, yunno
r e a l l y bad;
- don’t listen to sad music. listen to calming supportive music. or fun music! don’t fall into the sad music trap.
- I eat a lot of spicy foods. it makes me feel warm on the inside and it curbs my need to self harm cuz that stuff huRTS
- try to get outside during the day. at least for 20 minutes. I tend to sleep in past sunset so if I get up at least once and then go back to bed that’s okay. that’s good enough.
- see your friends/family. even if it’s just to sit in the room with them while they do their thing. it’s not evil to send a “can I come over and watch UA-cam while you finish your tasks? I need help, and a big help would be someone near me.”
you just need to make it to spring.
Love the tips and advice to add, I really appreciate it! All good ideas for us, the early sunsets and short days have been hitting hard for me this year.
I would love to see more about how you learn about photography, when it started and all that. I think you are so great on it, thank you for the content.
Cheers from Brazil.
Definitely planning to make that side of my life a bit more prominent on the channel going forward! I have a background in graphic design so I learned a bit about composition and photo retouching/editing back in school but all of my video experience was just trial and error/learning on the fly from the UA-cam channel. Some of my old videos are pretty rough! Haha. Have a few video ideas for the next couple of months I’m sure you’ll enjoy :) Thanks so much for the support!
This is really great dude! I'm definitely in need of getting these things in check, I struggle a lot in winter time, the sun is a rarity up North in England so historically I struggle a lot especially in January and February, my diet and exercise in particular just fall by the wayside and my mental health just becomes a lot lot worse, I'm gonna try and focus on improving these things going forward :)
Thanks so much for the support, glad it sparked the reminder for you to keep the diet and exercise in check, it should make a big difference! :)
Hey man,
Reaching out because I relate to a lot of the videos you have on your channel. Weight loss/bodybuilding, mental health, and pursuing passions have been struggles of mine for literally the past several years. Love the content! You have a new sub.
So awesome to hear that, I worry that my content is a bit too varied sometimes but I just cover stuff I like, glad there's someone with similar interests on everything! Appreciate the support, welcome to the community!
@@joshfenn Do what feels right man! Just my opinion lol
That’s the toughest part. Doing what make us happy. The majority of us has a job just because was the “only” thing available, and needed the job. Some other just don’t know how to continue doing what makes us happy. This tips are very, very constructive and great. Thanks for sharing and making time for us.
So glad to hear the video and tips resonated for you! Totally understand the only job available situation, that’s how I ended up selling mattresses for 6 years while trying to build up my own side gigs, it is a grueling and difficult time for sure. Hang in there and keep trying to do what’s best for you, that’s all we have sometimes :)
Fantastic video, loved the shots & the info. You’ve made me make a mindmap, thank you.
Thanks so much for the support!
Thanks for your honesty and guidance. Personally speaking, it also helps with grief to a point. This is a well-done video and I agree with the comments of others that the tone was set very well.
Thanks so much for the kind words and support! It felt so good to have a bit more time in the editing to up the production value. :) Glad it didn't go unnoticed!
Josh this is seriously an awesome video. I actually live here in Hillsboro, and I’ve been feeling down lately because of our weather. This was a great reminder, and the peaceful nature of this video has lifted my spirits instantly. I think I’m going to go for a hike in Washington Park with my family this weekend! It’s one of my favorite spots here in beautiful Oregon :)
So glad to hear that the video helped a bit! Especially from a neighbor :) I never really had issues back in Michigan but the past few winters here usually do try and bring me down a bit. Being able to hike year round (mostly) helps me so much! Reminds me how lucky I am being out here compared to a more brutal Midwest winter at least. Thanks for watching and supporting!
i live in the pnw and this helped me remember how romantic and special it is to live in this beautiful area, it’s not “just gloomy” and that has been getting to me.
So glad to hear this! As we’re moving into the winter again it’s good to remember some of the beauty around.
Really good video you helped a lot of people even 4 years later
Glad to hear it!
This was great my dude. Snow in Seattle was pretty intense. Office was pretty much empty for a week.
Thanks so much for the support! I'm sure it was rough up there, you definitely get with with the harsher weather compared to what we get down here.
Thanks for making this video and helping to shake me out of this funk I'm in. I had to stop halfway through because I started thinking about everything that's going on in my life right now. Work and life have just been stacking stress onto me like crazy this season. I really should change up my diet, exercise, and actually, start using the blue light feature of my Philips Hue lights.
So happy you got some benefit from the video! Focusing on the things I can control (diet, exercise, etc) always really helps me when times get tough mentally. Always around if you need anything!
Love this video and the production is unreal!!!
Josh your nature shots and editing motivates me to improve my channel!
Thanks so much! Was so happy I had the schedule flexibility to work on this one, this type of thing I’ve had as an idea to progress the walk with me series for a while now but just never had the time to make it. Glad the extra effort came through in the final video! :)
Beautiful video Josh, enjoyed it so much. Coming from Sydney Australia, didn’t know that seasonal depression was a thing; always great to learn something new.
I agree it is great that mental health issues are becoming easier for people to talk about; let’s hope that progression continues, especially with regard to young males.
I hadn’t thought about the flip side either, I guess that’s something that doesn’t really come up down there! It can be tough but definitely some ways to help combat the symptoms. I hope it continues to be pushed to the forefront too, we can all be a bit happier and healthier!
You're so lucky to live in such a sunny country
i think i have this. idk. it feels shitty that i am not as productive as i am in summer. i cant think straight, it feels blurry and i have exams. i am so terrified and tired of this.
No need to be terrified of it, but it’s something some of us have to deal with unfortunately. No shame in asking for help from friends, family, professionals - everything I talked about here always helps get me through. Wishing you the best for the upcoming winter!
It's just been a back and forth emotional roller coaster with snow storms and uni classes. But working on my comic and just drawing as much as I can has been pushing me through some rough patches.
So glad to hear you have a good constructive hobby to focus on! I've never been short on hobbies and interests like that but I know so many that don't have a big passion or hobby to put their attention into. Thanks for the input and support!
As beautiful as the PNW is it's not the only beautiful place and the constant grey is why this place is so dreadful in the winter months! Now you have smokey summers so your robbed of the little sunshine the area does get! It's a recipe for a disaster! I've never met so many depressed people in my life until I moved here! My lease is up in July and I think this is my last time living in the PNW! I might come back for a visit but these Bleek, Dark and Colorless winters! Take me home to the East Coast where there is just regular weather!!!
I definitely get the frustration. Despite the gloomy winters and the smoky summers the nature in the PNW still has me hooked and wanting to stay. Not sure what the long term future holds for me but for now the trade off is worth it
Great video! One of the hardest parts for me about the winner is that I lose motivation to go outside and work out because all of my equipment is in an unheated pole barn, which is very unfortunate for Michigan. I know I don't struggle quite as much with depression as I used to since I started taking vitamin D several years back.
I totally understand that having lived in Michigan most of my life. That cold is brutal! I'm glad at least the temps around here are much more reasonable for being outside year round. Glad to hear someone else had success with the vitamin D, that helps me a ton as well. Thanks for the input and support on this one!
Portland looks so beautiful in her shimmering white veil. Unfortunately I'm missing the snow. I'm back in Hawaii for awhile. :( I've got reverse seasonal depression. I'm avoiding the bright sunshine and dreaming of being back in snowy Portland.
You aren't missing too much of the beautiful snow! It melted a few hours after shooting this (in town at least), haha. Hopefully you can make it back soon!
Ungrateful! You're on a beautiful island with plenty of vitamin D and you're craving this bleak place? I'll trade locations with you ???
@@nunyafawkingbiz Times have certainly changed in the past three since I posted this comment. I'm grateful for where I'm at on this sunny island, but I miss the Portland I used to know and the friends I made there.
Very well done video. I can see the growth in what you are producing! Keep up the good work Josh.
Thanks so much! So happy to have a bit more time and attention to dedicate to the editing and production, I was really happy with how this one came out :)
hi Josh beautiful uplifting video, just what I needed
I hit a worrying downer for a while but I just put my head down and took it day by day and this week have felt like I'm getting back to normal
The winter doesn't bother me really - in England the weather is lousy all year round so it's pointless to be depressed!
I think a lot of it was my weight - 231 pounds now - my heaviest yet
I've started doing IIFYM this week and will keep you posted
so glad you're back you're so inspiring
I've been watching your older diet videos for info and encouragement xx
So glad you enjoyed the video, also glad to hear you're getting starting with IIFYM! Definitely keep me posted :) Thanks for the support as always!
@@joshfenn hi Josh
I'm on day 6 of IIFYM
I'm 5' 8" 231 pounds
goal weight 174 pounds
I'm *trying* to make these macros every day but never do
Carbs 138g Protein 214g Fat 58g
I'm weighing stuff religiously but have yet to make more that 70g of protein
my carbs are always over by 50g
Im hungry going to bed at night and craving sugar like crazy
I got these figures off IIFYM. com but I think the protein is too high and the fat too low?
(Every website gives different figures so it's hard to know what's right)
what do you advise as my Guru? xx
The IIIFYM figures on their site are usually pretty skewed, no wonder you've been having trouble. Based on some rough estimating for where you're lean mass versus body fat would be, you probably should be just fine aiming for around 120g of protein and putting all of the extra back into your carbs. Those carbs are super low and are probably making those sugar cravings a bit more intense, once you get that flipped back around you should be feeling a bit better once you settle in. Typically for protein you want to aim for 0.7-0.8 grams of protein per pound of lean body mass if you happen to know those figures for yourself and want to calculate. My estimate should be a fine starting point for the adjustment though. 👍 Hope this helps!
@@joshfenn thanks! that feels more realistic - I'm a lot more confident I can keep under those carbs and make that protein which I haven't been doing so far at all which was making me disheartened - one guy on the IIFYM facebook page told me it took him a couple of months to get his protein amounts high enough because it's something you have to learn as you go which made me feel better
you're a star xx
Thank you and hello from north of France 🇫🇷
Happy to share, thanks for the support!
Great Video! You're videos have great quality. Great editing!
Thanks so much for the support, glad you enjoyed this one!!
Beautiful video! Something I really needed to hear today. I love the part about doing what makes you happy. Even if it means taking time from your day to do things that make you happy. I'm looking forward to being out for hikes again. It's a little harder here in the Northern deep freeze, but hiking weather is really only a month or so away. In the meantime, your suggestion of even 10 mins makes great sense. It can be enough to get your mind moving onto better things. Thank you.
Thanks so much for the support! Definitely a good thing to keep in mind on even the 'mini' workouts, I do that often but usually end up deciding and wanting to stay which really switches the mindset to being more positive and less of a chore when you're not up to getting off the couch. No stranger to that cold coming from Michigan! It's crazy having year round hiking out here, I really try and remember to take advantage when I can. Thanks again!
Very good video brother. Been kind of frustrated this morning. I dont know if my phone battery 🔋is acting up or my charger. Thank you for some words of encouragement
Of course! Thanks so much for the support as always, means a lot!
Keeping a good routine will help you
Absolutely!
Btw I don't feel depression in winter but when I see cloudy weather at that moment my mood completely changed😢
Not many other tips aside from what I shared in the video, seeing a therapist if you’re able is always a good idea as well! Hope things get better for you.
@@joshfenn thanks for reply love you 😘💕🤗
Thank you for video man 🙏🏼 could you make video how your expose and color grade your videos?
P.S. respect from Russia 💪🇷🇺
Ooh, that would be a fun one! I'll definitely keep it in mind, have quite a few ideas for more video production related content moving forward, glad to hear you're interested!
Josh Fenn thank you 😊 will be wait 🙏
Abnormally wet summer here in the Northeast has spawned seasonal depression for me. It will be cold and dark again here soon. Relying on intense sunlight in the summer gets me through winter ( along with daily outdoor vigor). I am curious to see how my body will endure this year given that sunlight was a rare commodity. As is, winter feels like an Olympic event starting in November through March.
It definitely gets tough! Never had an issue with this living in Michigan but the pnw winters are much darker. Hope the tips help you!
Sir when I see cloudy weather I feel depression... I m facing this and I m in pain please help me and tell what should I do to get rid of seasonal affective disorder😢
Hey Josh, going to be in Portland this week for work (from the UK). Any suggestions for what to do, or what to avoid?
That's awesome! Always a ton of recommendations, not sure how much time you have here to enjoy things but pine street market is a cool place to checkout for some cheap/quick food, the lower macleay trail is a short and amazing hike in town that would still be great in winter. Feel free to shoot me an email at jshfenn@gmail.com and if there's anything specific for things you enjoy/types of food I'd be happy to share a few more places and things!
I’m trying my hardest. I have been making an effort to eat healthier. But as far as exercise, it’s been a slow going one there. I have been able to walk some with my dogs. I try to do light exercise inside. But I don’t know if I will ever get to the point of being able to exercise enough to lose weight.
You're thinking about it all wrong, you're doing great! Weight loss is 95% diet, light activity like what you're doing is absolutely perfect for focusing on weight loss. It's extremely difficult to lose significant weight through exercise, it's always best to put most of your attention towards your diet. I got more into weight training after my weight loss but for a big portion I didn't do anything more than walking when I was losing weight. Keep working at it, it sounds like you're doing fine though! :)
I Gert happy during gloomy weather., And I get moody and piss during warm days.
I used to be like this for years back in Michigan! Something about it out here in Oregon tends to get me a bit down if I don't take care of it. Always a work in progress. 👍
🖤
Thanks for watching and supporting!
@@joshfenn Thank you so much for the video and info it's just what I needed.
So glad to hear that :)
