This is something that i have noticed reading the technical sheets of Shell Oils, I have always found that Shell oils have a thicker viscosity when compared to the competition, this not only provides with smoothness, but also with better protection. I am ready to sacrifice a bit of my fuel efficiency for the lifespan of my engine.
u are right..i prefer to change my engine oil a bit earlier, for example 2000km ealier, even i use full synthetic oil i change oil at 7000km or before 6 months..never get fooled by ads like long mileage oil of more than 10,000km or 1 year oil change interval..my personal obsevation, my car has oil consumption issues, so i noticed that the oil consumption increases after 6000km of use, thus i guess at 6000km the oil becomes thinner
in America it gets very hot and cold where I live. 47° C in summer and -12° C winters. I usually use shell oil in summer and total oil in winter. I notice shell doesn't burn off as much in the heat and total gives me better mpg and cold starts more quietly probably because the shell is a tiny bit more viscous. I monitor that with my oil pressure Guage and total builds pressure quicker than shell.
I have used both the oil in my cruze and here is my experience. What I liked most about Shell helix 8 5w30 is that engine becomes smooth after 15mins of start even after 9k km. On the other hand Total quartz 5W40 oil felt harsh after 6k-7k km run. For long run I did like shell helix 8 5W30. I haven't noticed major difference in fuel efficiency.
The A5/B5 rating of the Total Quartz 8000 is the reason for the lower fuel economy. However depending on the additive package it may not protect the engine as good as the A3/B4 of the Shell Helix HX8 Which goes to show that oils with the same viscosity (both are 5W30) do not protect the engine equally (again depending on the additive package of the A5B5). HTHS: high temperature/high shear rate viscosity, To keep it simple, a low number is better for fuel economy, a higher number is better for protecting the engine (but as always refer to your vehicles owners manual) The HTHS of the A5/B5 at 150 deg C is between 2.9 and 3.5 The HTHS of the A3/B4 at 150 deg c is GREATER than or equal to 3.5 (so a minimum of 3.5) I could be wrong, and I'm happy to learn, But I don't think that kinematic viscosity is what is causing your result 🤷♂
Shell is over a hundred year old company with over a hundred billion miles of data regarding engine and mechanical wear. They are also the premier top tier standard oil that other manufacturers strive to become. I dont usually support ultra large corporations, but I gotta admit shell has done their research and is proven over the decades. And some people still doubt that their oil is not on par with other so called "high end" oils, when in fact other oil manufacturers are striving to become like shell.
Shell Ultra 5W-30 lost the 507 Germany certification. We must 2 years another companies oil buy. Yet have finally a new formula (but not in the all store) the new 5W-30 which has again 507 cartification for Germany VAG cars. BIG COMPANY HUH???

Good one. 👌 I used to use Shell helix hx8 for about 3 years but last time the multi brand car service centre had put Mobil 10w40 even though I had clearly insisted him to put Hx8 only. with Mobil 10w40 for my grand i10 was performing really bad, lost smoothness in drive, fuel efficiency dropped and totally felt like I was running a cart wheel on the uphill. This time I am back to same old Shell Hx8 and I am already noticing the changes in performance in short distance. And your review is very much helpful in deciding which oil to choose. Mobil Super 3000 Formula FE vs Total Quartz 8000 NFC. Which one should be preferred? Both are A5/B5. Mobil is API SN whereas Quartz is API SL. Have used Mobil in Tata Nexon 1.2 turbo petrol. Smoothness was avg. but fuel economy was very good. No experience with Quartz 8000.
You are right sir. Ethnol is killing your car engine and it's mileage. My advice is to change your car filter every one year and change your engine oil after every 5000km to maintain your engine . Currently ethnol in india is 15 % and in January 2025, it with be 20%. So best luck in maintaining your swift car.
Tata Tiago BS4 petrol recommends ACEA A5/B5 specification engine oil. Is it ok if the specification isn't the same because a multi-brand service centre suggested Castrol fully synthetic which is not of the same specification as above. Both are good but not value for money. Use them after using engine cleaner. If you keep using a semi synthetic or synthetic engine oil, you won't neet them.

What year is the Alto from? Alto's before 2012 required 20W40/10W40 grades as per my knowledge, and the later ones requires 5W30 engine oil. Doesn't matter what oil the previous owner was using, as long as he was changing it on time, there shouldn't be any issues with switching to Shell.
bro, I also do experiment with oil on my 2 bikes ( hf deluxe 2019/Bs4 model & R15s v2 2019/bs4 model, R15 is Fi ) So far I have used OEM oil by their respective manufacturers , shell, castrol, motul. IMO castrol was worst , A FS 10w40 lasted only 1200-1500 Km on my r15, even though I ride between 50 to 65Kmph only. second is OEM Third place is Motul top place for shell /best oil Now I am going to try shell rimula r3 15w40( heavy duty diesel oil ) in r15 and gulf powertack 10w30 FS in hf deluxe. I wanted to ask u ,could u please suggest me some heavy duty diesel oil with grade 5w40 to use in my r15 ( recommended grade is 10w30 as per yamaha ), so that I can go atleast 7 to 10K kms before oil change. so far in my opinion shell is best.
Hi . I have a question and it needs to be addressed immediately. I have a dream Yuga. And I was using 10w30 honda specified mineral oil. But having issues with mileage and vibration. So yesterday I changed my oil and used Castrol power 1 10w40. Fully synthetic. I did some 80+ kms today and my bike stopped suddenly 3 times. And I can feel that bike is not running that freely which it used to, upshifts are smooth but downshift are choppy. now my question is do I need to set my carburettor to fit the new oil.? Because I can feel the bike is missing a little when the engine is on higher rpms or when I m accelerating after crusing speeds..

Hi Mayank, Although a lot of old gen Maruti Suzuki petrol engines have responded fine to 0W-20, I will still prefer a good 5W-30 grade engine oil for them.
There are many different good engine oils, use 5W30 grade first of all and you can go for Shell Helix HX8 5W30 , Castrol Magnatec 5W30, Mobil 5W30 synthetic.

I will suggest you to stick with the stock engine oil atleast during the running period. You engine will take some time (km) to settle down. I hope you are not riding it at high rpm or being aggressive with it during the initial 1000-1500km.

I have used Helix HX8 in Fortuner and it significantly reduced the fuel efficiency compared to Castrol Magnatec. As the car is drove by my father and he has nothing to do with the refinement and told me not to experiment with his car due to significant dip in efficiency.
Step 1: Check your owners manual to see what oil the car needs IF the Magnatec has a A5/B5 rating, An A3/B4 will not be as fuel efficient as a A5/B5 engine oil. This is due to the HTHS value. A5/B5 HTHS is between 2.9 and 3.5 A3/B4 is minimum 3.5 The long and the short of it is the lower the number the better for fuel economy, The higher the number, the better for engine protection. So if your vehicle can use an A5B5 and that's what you plan to use, Ensure that you use a mainstream brand that has a very very good additive package (to offset the lower HTHS of the oil compared to the A3B4.
Go for Servo Futura G Plus Synthetic 5W-30. It is available on Flipkart. It is good bang for buck in semi synthetic. If you want to go full synthetic, I would suggest you Castrol Edge LL 5W30 or Shell 0W-30 but I don't think EcoSport needs a fully synthetic engine oil.
AFAIK, Suzuki petrol engines from 2013 onwards required 0W20 engine oils. If you have been using any other grade, you should try to revert to 0W20. Maruti's Genuine 0W20 oil by Shell seems like a decent choice if your running is on the lesser side

Shell base oil stock is from natural gas which is better than crude oil derived base stock as they own the worlds largest cng to lubricant plant. Thats the core reason apart from the additive pack.
He would probably get a similar result, Since both the "C3" and the "Ultra X" in the "shell helix ultra" range have the same HTHS as the HX8 oil. And it is more than likely the HTHS rating which is causing the drop in fuel economy compared to the A5B5 engine oil that he also uses. High HTHS is better for protecting the engine, A low HTHS is better for fuel economy.

No. Use castrol shell or mobil engine oil. These 3 are the best oils in the market. Zic is cheap oil with cheap additives in it. From my experience I would use castrol engine oil.

Bro u used completely 2 different oils. Total oil a5 b5 is not for japnese cars. Where as the shell oil is for japnese cars. Your comparison is wrong. I deal with oils everyday. A5 b5 is mainly for fords and some Hyundai's. U have to check the owners manual for correct specification.

Total quartz is the most common oil by far. I use 5w40 and get it dirt cheap - 5L is around 19€/23$
Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 always works for me.

Better stay away. I didn't have a good experience. Idemitsu is popular like Oppo and Vivo as it gives retailers a lot of commission.

Hi all... Noticing all your comments opinions expressed. Here I used total quartz 5w/30 A5/b5. But I'm not experienced good performance of Chevrolet sail diesel engine. Is it advised to us shell helixe 5w30 instead of total oil. Pls suggest any one.

I will suggest you to stick with the stock engine oil atleast during the running period. You engine will take some time (km) to settle down. I hope you are not riding it at high rpm or being aggressive with it during the initial 1000-1500km.

I have used Helix HX8 in Fortuner and it significantly reduced the fuel efficiency compared to Castrol Magnatec. As the car is drove by my father and he has nothing to do with the refinement and told me not to experiment with his car due to significant dip in efficiency.

Step 1: Check your owners manual to see what oil the car needs
IF the Magnatec has a A5/B5 rating,
An A3/B4 will not be as fuel efficient as a A5/B5 engine oil.
This is due to the HTHS value.
A5/B5 HTHS is between 2.9 and 3.5
A3/B4 is minimum 3.5
The long and the short of it is the lower the number the better for fuel economy,
The higher the number, the better for engine protection.
So if your vehicle can use an A5B5 and that's what you plan to use,
Ensure that you use a mainstream brand that has a very very good additive package (to offset the lower HTHS of the oil compared to the A3B4.

Go for Servo Futura G Plus Synthetic 5W-30. It is available on Flipkart. It is good bang for buck in semi synthetic. If you want to go full synthetic, I would suggest you Castrol Edge LL 5W30 or Shell 0W-30 but I don't think EcoSport needs a fully synthetic engine oil.
Go for Amsoil signature series 5W30, best engine oil in the world at the moment. I use it on my ecosport

Which oil are you using now? How is it performing?
AFAIK, Suzuki petrol engines from 2013 onwards required 0W20 engine oils. If you have been using any other grade, you should try to revert to 0W20. Maruti's Genuine 0W20 oil by Shell seems like a decent choice if your running is on the lesser side
Use either 5W30 or 0W20 grade
Mobil 0W-20 available on Flipkart and Amazon. 5W-30 if you live in middle of Rajasthan.
@@darshdeepsingh2447 if you check the temperature range for 0W20 and 5W30 there isnt much of a difference...but 0W20 is costlier compared to 5W30. As 5w30 can be made in mineral, semi synthetic and Synthetic all 3 but 0w20 in only synthetic
Shell base oil stock is from natural gas which is better than crude oil derived base stock as they own the worlds largest cng to lubricant plant. Thats the core reason apart from the additive pack.

He would probably get a similar result,
Since both the "C3" and the "Ultra X" in the "shell helix ultra" range have the same HTHS as the HX8 oil.
And it is more than likely the HTHS rating which is causing the drop in fuel economy compared to the A5B5 engine oil that he also uses.
High HTHS is better for protecting the engine,
A low HTHS is better for fuel economy.

www.euroliquids.co.in only they retail 0W-16 in India yet but it is very expensive, not value for money.
You don't have to use it. The Camry and other toyotas say to use 0w-16 to 15w-40 in the owners manual but a 5w-30 should be fine.

No. Use castrol shell or mobil engine oil. These 3 are the best oils in the market. Zic is cheap oil with cheap additives in it. From my experience I would use castrol engine oil.

Bro u used completely 2 different oils. Total oil a5 b5 is not for japnese cars. Where as the shell oil is for japnese cars. Your comparison is wrong. I deal with oils everyday. A5 b5 is mainly for fords and some Hyundai's. U have to check the owners manual for correct specification.
