Learning how to sew bag handles is an important part of any bag or purse project. The handles need to be tough enough to support the bag, but you still want them easy to sew. Stacy Grissom shows you a how to sew bag handles that are both sturdy and easy!
How to Start
First she begins with how you will need to modify the handle strap dimensions for this method, and then it’s on to pressing. By folding and pressing the fabric the way Stacy shows, the extra layers of fabric help provide support to the handles, and could eliminate the need for interfacing on some bag or purse projects.
Secure the Edges

As with the fabric used in this video, and other fabrics that take well to pressing, once the folds are ironed in place they stay. If you are using a different type of fabric, or find that your folds are coming undone, you may want to consider secure the layers of the folds together. This can be done with either a simple line of edge-stitching, or if you didn’t want to see any stitching you could apply some fusible hem tape or other adhesive between the layers to secure them.
This looks familiar
If you are thinking that you’ve seen this method used somewhere else-you might be right! This method of folding, using fabric cut on the bias, is how you create a form of bias tape. But as Stacy shows, different methods can be used for many different applications, and in this case she shows how to sew bag handles with ease!

That's the best iron I have ever seen! You don't need to lift it and the hot plate is alway facing safely down. Awesome
for real. im so in love with that iron
I am glad that you snipped the corner piece on the ends; I've watched tons of strap videos using this same method, but never has anyone clipped the corner -- and they DO get in the way and I always ending up snipping it....but doing it right from the get-go is great. Good going!
Your iron has a mind of its own! 🤣🤣🤣 I was going to purchase the Oliso but I really appreciate a cordless better. As for this video, it has really helped me with making bag handles. So thank you for sharing. 👍🏻👍🏻❤️
We're so glad this proved to be helpful! Thanks much!
Well done - I've just spent an afternoon trying to figure out the process and kept ending up with handles that were too narrow. I then abandoned the attempt with fabric and worked with paper. Still not the right size. Multiply the desired measurement by four - I dread to think how long it would have taken me to work that out. Calming down and thinking logically it makes perfect sense, of course. Thank you.
Thank you, this is so much easier than all that dreaded long handle turning! 👍😊
Thank you but I did do that, as I usually do. This time it did not work, and I suspect it was never set up in the first place for this particular video. Again, thank you very much for taking the time to try to help.
Loved this, super easy and nice looking
Easy and simple to make
I made it yesterday.
you saved me. hugs and thanks so much. love from brasil
The iron is an oliso pro tg1600 for anyone interested!
Thanks. Really easy when the measurements are perfect.
This is so simple, thanks you! I have to say I love your iron.
Very helpful! Thank you! :)
Thank you this tutorial is awesome! I will try it right now! :D
Perfect.
yes this is a great way to do handles I first saw this technique with lazy girl designs and have used it ever since.
If I m doing with pvc leather how to turn it
Thanks
That is very helpful and easy to follow. I would appreciate it if you could please explain how to make the same strap but with rounded ends. Many thanks.
This really helps me a lot..Thanks.
That little iron always has to have the last word.
😂
Thank you .. This was such a big help.
Thank you for this video!!
I'm new to totes. How to sew them on?

Very helpful.
Thank you for this easy tutorial! I have been needing to replace some purse straps but do not enjoy paying so much for straps that cannot withstand the weight of my purse, hence they break down soon afterwards. You have saved me quite the headache, thanks again!
I wonder what make of scissors that is?
Do you sew down the middle of that ?
Hi,
Yes, you can sew down the middle to add extra stability.
Cheers,
Ashley
If you wanted to add interface to make them sturdier where would place it?
Hi Vicki. Interfacing can be applied to the wrong side of the fabric being used to
make the handles- this way it will add stability but not be seen. Thanks!
I thought you were going to sew them? The end finish is how I need my straps but I can’t sew all four corners because then it’s hard to flip it.. how would I get it to look like that with sewing!?
You don't flip these straps. That's why the fabric is right side out, get it? It doesn't make sense to flip it at all.
Also this isn't the best video to learn how to sew straps. Yes it learns you how to fold them the right way for them to be strong, but it doesn't actually learn you how to sew them lmao. Better find another video. Idk, I know how to do them this way but english is not my first language so it would be hard to explain...
@@me9981 thx! My comment was a year ago I figured it out(:
@@alikhim7774 I just saw it was a year ago...oops lmao anyways...glad you figured it out.

Do I sew it after??

Yes you sew it after its all put together. How to attach to the bag I'm not sure on that, but if you don't sew it the one side will open up with use. Hugs
Woodprix is nice for that.
Maybe some sharp scissors for next video?
Terrible title. A video with no actual sewing involved. 👎
