Reusable shopping bags are the green way to go. This tote bag is perfect for groceries or other shopping. The ones you buy from the grocery store tend to be pretty ugly and not that durable. By making your own, you can choose the fabric and they’re stronger than the store bought bags.
If you want to be able to machine wash your bags, cotton or cotton blends are good choices. I’ve also made a bag with outdoor fabric and an oilcloth lining. These materials shouldn’t be machine washed, but the outdoor fabric is water and stain resistant and the oilcloth is waterproof and easily wipes clean.

I made this bag. While making it I realized the video did not say whether the 20 inch side or 21 inch side is your top/bottom or sides. So when I added my stabilizer I had 3 1/2 inches on each side instead of four. I sewed with 21 from top to bottom and 20 inches wide.
I agree with Cassandra, this instructional does not specify details real well, such as is your 21" inch side the top or bottom. If your working with decorative lines, plaid or an upright pattern, you don't know if your sewing this right side up. I wanted my stripes to go in an up and down. Thinking the 21" side is longest, I thought it should go on the side, but it should have been the top/bottom. I had to seam rip my stitches out and start over. You should have labeled the sides "top, bottom, side, side," on the fabric when you cut them out. The bag Is pretty when it's done, but the instructions aren't clear and she goes to fast. Don't use obvious patterns, stripes, or obvious "this side up" printed patterns. It will mess you up.
Tutorial is good for someone that has sewing background. For someone that is new to sewing a lot has been assumed in the instructions.
The lining never seems to fit when I make a bag.😢
We found out that your video is closely related to our topic. Is it okey if we were going to use this video for educational purposes? Thank you!
Thank you for this tutorial- I’ve made two bags since yesterday for an upcoming bag ban in my state (both paper and plastic), and I used one today at Costco. The cart loader loved the bag- it was the perfect size! Came home and made the second one.I think I may make a few more sets for family members’ Christmas gifts.
Just be aware the X you sew for the handles to be attached will be visible on the inside of the bag. I didn't really think that through and I had a dark thread on a light inside liner and the bags looks so professional except for the those messy Xs I sewed because for some dumb reason i thought they'd be hidden...
I have been sewing for over 60 years and you just taught me how to make a cute bag! Excellent video and great instructor. 😊
I like that you have FABRIC written on your scissors. Using the sewing scissors only for fabric was one of the first things my mother taught me when learning how to sew.
So easy to make and came out amazing. I made an unlined bag by upcycling a used canvas banner that otherwise would have been trash. Win win.
I'm a beginner sewer. I just made this bag for Mother's day for my partners mom who gave me her sewing machine. The bag turned out beautifully and I made a matching pouch to go with it. So excited to give it to her today. Thank you this video. I found it very easy to follow along with and you explained things well.
Three years in and your excellent video made my day! I've been working hot and heavy on multiple quilting projects for friends and family the last few months. Today, I decided to make something for myself - making this bag was so easy, no glitches, no seams or rows to line up within a sixteenth of an inch. Therapeutic and super cute. Thanks!
I just finished this bag tonight! Im so happy at how fast this came together! I love the stabilizer in the bottom. I used canvas for the exterior and broadcloth for the liner. Im excited to experiment with different fabrics!
Found this tutorial recently,. This plus the handy PDF guide has been really useful. I’ve been making the smaller sized ones, using fat quarters for the lining. My family are getting one each for Christmas. Each one unique with different lining. More please!
Love this! A great way to use those smaller amounts of outdoor fabric you find on clearance, as well.
I made my first bag today. The instructor's video made this so easy for me to follow. I used left over material which made it even more fun to make.
Thank you so much for this easy tutorial. I'm just done making it. Took me two hours but the product came out wonderful. ❤
And this is how every single instructional video should be. Great video!!!!
This was a fantastic video. Clear, concise instructions, straight-forward walk through, and no extra verbal filler. I wish more DIY videos were like this one. Great job!
