I also picked up a fake in this style. The front logo medallion looked legit with stitching but I realized the medallion logo wasn't even stitched on but was glued on. I ended up pulling off all the Dooney markings and painting the bag in a unique way and sold it locally.

I did something similar when I bought what was supposed to be a vintage Coach backpack from the 90's on Mercari. First I notified Mercari and the seller, then I pulled off the identifiers and let my daughter paint it and use as a purse.

When I accidentally source a fake, I remove/destroy any of the faux “branding” and re-donate the bag or let my daughter use it for dress up. It’s been my experience that thrift stores don’t give a hoot if something is fake.

Oh, I recently grabbed a fake D&B too! It was from the bins, and really dingy. I’m actually using it as an “experiment” on cleaning a dingy fabric bag before I delve into the tote of nice stuff that needs to be cleaned. If i ruin the fake one trying to learn the cleaning techniques, oh well!!! Better that than the Kate Spade!

Write Fake in large letters on the inside of the bag in ink that won't wash out and redonate it!

I was wrong. There is a number on the back of the tag on my Dooney. It looks sewn in but does lift up and the number is there on the other side. Someone here suggested the design diva authentication group on Facebook and found out where the number is. Thank all. You are so great to share all these wonderful resources.

I like Cathy Schonberger's comment. I've taken the handles off fakes to use on my bags made of upcycled items. Sad that fakes with useful parts would be destroyed.

For a long time, as the price of Chanel increased, I no longer thought I could afford it. I think I would be happy to have the HIDUPZ as my travel bag and not have to take care of it. By the way, I'm sure no one will have a hard time telling the difference. Thanks for the comparison.

I had the opposite just happen to me. I sold a Ralph Lauren plus size windbreaker to a lady and she wanted to return it because it was fake. It wasn't. Do people make fake Ralph Lauren? I mean this sold for $39. It had the Ralph Lauren tags, Ralph Lauren on the zippers, and the Ralph Lauren seal embroidered on the chest. The lady said she knew it was fake because of the fit ( the real reason I suspect she wants to return it because it doesn't fit) and that it was only $6. Yes, I paid $6 at a thrift store and that price was written on the back of the size tag. I try to remember to mark the price I paid out or remove it if possible but I missed this one. She also said it was brand new and she thought she was purchasing a used jacket. What?! So I guess she was admitting it was like new which it was. Anyway, it's stuff like this that irritates me to the point of wanting to not even do resale. I'm still waiting for Poshmark to decide the case.

    • @jjh8367
      @jjh8367 2 роки тому +1

What if you did some one-of-a-kind modifications to the bag yourself? Pull the stitching on the front medallion to remove and remove as much evidence of D&B as you can (helpful in this case that it isn't printed all over the bag!).
Then add some embellishments of your own. Tags, patches, etc. Maybe artfully write "So NOT Real" on the very bottom of the bag. Have fun with it! Then you can sell it as a 'Common Tags' original. 😊

Courtney, first you are wearing that beautiful Scully shirt and it looks fabulous on you, glad you kept it. Perfect with your coloring. Thanks for the lesson on fake bags. I bought a vintage Coach at a funny outlet thrift store that I love, it’s a heavy, simple bag. Someone else had picked it up and decided against purchasing it, found it in the hard goods area of the store. I haven’t tried to authenticate it yet but I will definitely go that route just in case I ever want to sell it.

I bought a fake Dooney & Bourke at a yard sale when I first started reselling. She assured me it was real, it was similar to yours. When I got home a looked it over I realized it was fake. The hardware was cheap and the only real leather was the duck emblem. I only paid $8.00 and there was a $5.00 bill in the pocket, so I was only out $3.00. Lesson learned.

Thank you for this! I got a second hand one at a vintage store and didn't know if it was legitimate now I can look up the number on the back of the tag! I always get complements wearing my Dooney and Burke though and it probably was worth a lot more new! I would take off the fakes logos/tags with a cobblers help or with a seam ripper then resale it as not Dooney.

I'm so sorry that you found that bag but you managed to sleuth out that it was counterfeit and I can really appreciate that excellent research! Maybe you could remove all the identifiers on the bags that you have and sell them without logos, etc if they are still nice bags? Just an idea or maybe use them for storing things in your home? Thanks for your awesome honest approach to reselling. You are a real gem with a wonderful fun personality and great outlook on life! Cheers to you! Pat

Use it as a planter line with a gallon size zip lock baggie then put a house plant in it and hang it by the strap out on your porch or balcony, or set it on a patio table as a fun conversation piece. I found fake Coach and Rooney at my Goodwill and told the manager but she acted like I was trying to get a discount instead of being helpful.

Thanks for an informative video on a topic that is something that we all need to be aware of in the reselling world. I would contact Dooney and Bourke and explain the situation. Ask them to send you a prepaid mailer so you can send it to them. I would think they would have a real interest in getting all the fakes off the street. Or, if that is too farfetched, ask them what you should do with it. They might tell you to throw it out.

  • @CoriMultipass

Commenting bc I just bought a Dooney from the thrift store! It's a more recent one, and I just emailed the company to ask when they started making this style collection of bags (Denison/crocodile print) so I can at least date the bag, bc my first impression was 2000s style and that's why I even looked for a brand, but they're still selling new ones with the same print, just not the shape. I can't find the exact style on the website and I haven't been able to find out what date they released this line of bags.
So the jury is still out on mine, but it has a hilarious serial number (with a correct location letter and Made In tag) and looks like a nice purse that I'll get some easy practise with cleaning real leather and polishing metal, so it's not bad for what I paid. To be honest, I will probably keep it because of the serial number. Either that, or sell it for like $6k when I'm ready. Specifically $6666 because that's in the serial number lmao! Demon Dooney!

  • @janetcox8174

I bought a fake vintage Dooney on eBay and disputed it. I got a refund, but the seller didn't want it back. It is sitting in a bedroom and I keep it only to use as a comparison to authentic bags. I would never knowingly resell or donate a fake bag, because I don't believe they should just be recirculating. I recently got bamboozled on a vintage Coach, and a kind Posher pointed out that the creed was weird. I had never noticed it before. I took down tbe listing and threw it in the garbage. Hopefully, it is biodegradable.

    Ugh! Couple
Months ago I didn’t know I bought a Dooney & Bourke handbag just like the one you showed, it was green.
Bought it from Salvation Army in Arizona, the bag was behind the counter, marked 24.99 and marked down to 14.99.
I also believed the bag was made before the Dooney & Bourke code tag.
Couple days later, I did some research on D&B bags, the hardware, zipper, medallion and things didn’t match up.
The leather medallion didn’t look beautifully embossed or sewed on. …the medallion was glued on, so I riped it off.
I then shared it on shorts on UA-cam.
ThankU for sharing your experience on fake bags and how to spot’em.
I’m from Alaska, was visiting Arizona for a time.

personally I think a fake bag sounds like a good start for repaint project.
like, I'm not going to take a bottle of angeleus (shoe/leather paint) and paint a new weird color scheme on a real designer purse somebody could use to get a job, but a fake bag????
    welcome to the ~Color Zone~
and then instead of being a fake designer purse, now it's an original hand-painted purse by me.

In the 90's there was a big business in Encinada, MX making and selling Dooney and Burke bags. Cruise ships stopped there and lots were sold. I was excited but when I started to photograph it, I couldn't find a tag inside the bag. Googled for more info and 1st thing that popped out was Cole Hazan emboss their name inside the handles. Hiya Courtney I’m so sorry this happened to you! Our Goodwills knowingly sell counterfeits as the real thing. Politely point out why it’s a counterfeit it goes in one ear out the other, put right back out for sale. I don’t understand how they get away with selling them, it’s illegal! My suggestion: write in indelible ink inside the bag “counterfeit” “fake”, donate to a women’s shelter. This way it can’t be resold as “real”. I wouldn’t bother returning, they’ll just pass it off to the next person *unless* you can mark it as a counterfeit so someone else won’t get fooled. Only other option I can think of is to take off all logos, tags, make it into something else. But that’s time consuming & even if you created a great new style, you might not get a good ROI. Good luck & May this never happen again! Have a lovely weekend! Jet 🧡🎸🎶⚡️

In the same boat! I made an accidental purchase of fake Loubitons. Apparently real ones DO NOT come with an authentication card. I can't even bring myself to redonate them. They sit in my shoe basket at the front door!

my local goodwill had a fake lv handbag locked in their case and they had it marked for $150. I told the girl that let me look at it that it was fake. She put it back into the locked case.

I just got a vintage D&B purse. Same color scheme, different style. I’m pretty sure it’s real, cause the lock part is loose and may soon fall off (I’ve already resigned myself to using nail polish or super glue to permanently attach it back on. A few scratches. A couple pen marks. Some edges and corners showing obvious wear. Real leather far as I can tell. I think I got a good deal, even with the conditions.

What if you remove the brand logos and donate it. If they don’t say the brand name they can still be used as a purse or tote and someone just looking for a purse can buy it.

The goodwill by my moms will knowingly sell fakes. I told them a couch was fake it was a terrible fake and they still sold it to someone for $50. The manager said she believed it authentic when it was spelled wrong on the key fob.

Viewers have some great ideas Courtney. I've given fakes away to teens. I've also purchased a fake LV for $400 from someone off of Craigslist (about 8 years ago). Still upsets me to this day. What a rookie mistake. Selling fakes as authentic is what really burns me. I guess I'm more ok with fakes that are identified and donated/passed along to people, but I see the moral dilemma for sure. xo Great video.

Probably the best way to tell a fake Dooney is the duck emblem is usually glued on instead of sewn on bolted on like the real ones. Also the hardware is usually not that shiny gold, but brass. Here in Atlanta the thrift stores are aware that they sell fakes. Usually the fake ones are priced low and the real ones are priced higher. Sorry that u bought a knock off, it happens.

Yes. I have fakes purchased at estate sales. They are sitting in the closet. My Dooney & Bourke does not have a number. It is real as it is mine and purchased new years ago at a Marshall's. So vintage Dooney doesn't has a number. The counterfeiters make Coach bags. I, like you, was shocked because it is such an affordable bag.

Dooney and Burke from the 90's was highly replicated. Especially old coach before the original family sold the company. Old coach bags were of such amazing quality with all really thick beautiful leather. Rip off bags were sold out of the back of cars in Los Angeles and other big cities back in the day. Kate Spade also.

I purchased a fake black coach bag earlier this year. It was being sold for $100 (but it was 50% off day) so of course I was thinking it was real. Luckily it was at Savers and they accept returns. Everything I was finding online made it seem real but I did use real authentication.com and they determined it was fake. I no longer bother looking in the glass case anymore because I don’t know what to look for.

I have mistakenly purchased fakes before. Typically the place of purchase takes them back an destroys them. I also remind the seller it is illegal to sell fake bags. Goodwill will definitely take then back and they have now begun authenticating them before placing for sell. If you can't return the fake the only thing to do is burn it or great suggestion by Cathy Schonberger and Veronica Thompson. Great way to recoup some money on it.

vintage Dooneys are USA - the serial number on the tag matters. if it starts with an A or B (I think), its USA. J is china. They are indeed Dooneys, but they are just made overseas and for the curious, the majority are now made overseas.

Thanks for being super transparent Courtney! It's refreshing to see someone who is open and honest with stuff like this. It's not just smaller resellers that run into this, it can happen to any of us.
recently in my local salvation army they had a real vintage dooney very similar to yours, and a fake one in the same style but different color. The fake one had a much higher price tag since it was in better shape/less used. I was shocked to see two bags side by side in the thrift that were so similiar with only small indicators that one was real vs fake.
I found a LV bag at my local thrift as well. I was so stoked to find it but upon closer examination it was all glued together and definitely not authentic. I let the manager know and she simply told me to mind my business and if I wasn't purchasing it, to just put it back on the shelf. Oh well. I should carry a pen so I can write FAKE on tags lol

I own several authentic Coach and D&Bs which are so old that they don't have tags. I treat them as my most precious treasures. 😂
As for Longchamp, even the reverse indentation about the horse is a quick give away. The fakes are getting better and better. Super sneaky - the serial numbers of the translucent plastic tag are are off - don't match the style. Crazy elaborate. 😈🤬

Some of them are super hard to tell if they are fake or not for sure! Sucks this one was not real its cute. Just for knowledge I know vintage D&B can be assembled in other countries like Costa Rica and I think could be circa early 90's. I found a Medium Essex Bag in a thrift for $10. It was also unlined but it had pockets made of leather, the correct tag, a serial number and an Assembled in Costa Rica tag. Also all the hardware had had dooney & bourke stamped on it and on all the rivets on the inside of the purse and the duck on the front was the correct duck. :)

This is why I'm afraid to sell bags on Ebay (or any platform). I bought a COACH Purse at a yardsale and it had the leather patch with the bag number sewn in it so I listed it on Poshmark and they removed it because they said it was fake. I did look the number up and the first three different listings of the same bag sold on Ebay. . The next one I got I took it to the COACH Store and they said they don't authenticate so I'm just afraid to sell them. I do not want to be known for trying to pass fake items. I'm so afraid of selling fake ones so until I become more educated on authenticating them, I won't sell them. Sorry that happened to you. Also, I went into a thrift store and they had a Prada Bag and went to buy it and the cashier told me it wasn't real. Isn't that illegal to knowingly sell fakes?

Speaking of fakes I found some shoes that had the red bottom sole but it was by a different designer name different everything made in Mexico clearly not the CL so I thought I was fine since there was no logos but I did have my listing removed on PM. I was confused did some research and the only explanation I can find is the CL trademarks the red bottom shoes. So shoes can have half a red bottom or the tip but the whole sole can’t be red. Still pretty new to reselling so I was really shocked. Has anyone ever heard of this??

I have lots of real Dooneys and I had that purse most of the vintage bags did not have a lining and the duck is always looking backwards. I would give it to somebody or just use it. No one but you will know. I have a fake Bambi dooney and it looks real and I have gotten more compliments. I told the women it was fake. I love dooneys and have quite a lot. I bought the fake one and gave it to my best friend and told her it was fake and she did not care and wore it out.

I have found a fake coach, which is odd because I know coach, and a fake Gucci burned them both. Found a pair of fake Nike which was a first burned those too. Certainly would not re donate or give away. I also found 3 pair of men’s diesel jeans. Ended up fake and they were burned too. That’s my take on it.
