I Found a 5,000 Year Old Native American Arrowhead while Artifact Hunting and Digging in Florida

- What a blast! It has been ages since I went out specifically looking for Native American arrowheads and other artifacts. When an old friend randomly mentioned that they had new property that might have a site on it, I knew I had to go check it out. Tons of signs of people living there in the past, including a projectile point (which is actually a spear head or knife, not arrowhead) from approximately 5,000 years ago!
Let me know in the comments if you'd like to see me come back here and hunt a little more. I only had a few hours on this hunt, but there is no telling what else might be here (or how long until something is built right on top of the site).

Hey Cris! Just wondering, is this site registered or known to other local archeologists? I feel that if it is an important site it should probably undergo a proper excavation. I worry digging holes and removing artifacts without fully recording their place in situ removes a lot of context for these objects and eliminates/misses other valuable information about these communities that can be found in the soil/sand. You're probably aware of all this and have got this question before, it just was a concern I had when watching the video. Thanks!

Sam, I doubt the specific site is registered, but the entire area is known to have an incredible concentration of sites from this time period. Nearly every pond, lake, sinkhole or river/stream in this area has sites on the high ground near them. I rarely hear about run of the mill sites like this being excavated by any professionals unless there is something very special about it.
If I find out there is something special about this site, I’d be the first to talk to the land owner about bringing in professionals before septic tanks are put in and buildings built on the property.
I am absolutely amazed that your terminology for everything is so accurate. Calling it Chert, saying preform, etc etc. Props for keeping it entertaining and educational!

I don't know about Yellowjackets in the South but up here in Minnesota they get really aggressive in September as cooler temperatures approach.
You need to get the Rochester, MI, Dinosaur Park. A boy just found a huge Mammoth tooth laying on top. There must be more under the soil.
There was a whole Mammoth found on a farm in Michigan in the 70's
That lizard at 3:18 is called a southern fence lizard, use to catch those bois as a kid. The males get blue scales on their bellies they’re really cool
I have seen them with the blue on them! I am amazed that you caught them, they are incredibly fast.

Here is Nevada we catch western fence lizards, which are similar.

PaleoCris Yeah, it’s a pretty great spot! Seems like it was a production area at the time. About 5000 to 7000 years old. Luckily the weather was more cooperative for me. That point you found is beautiful though!

I grew up in cent. Fla. '60s. It's good to see gopher burrows and fence lizards/skinks again.

Awesome Newnan or Marion . Never can tell tell the difference unless they are really big with perfect symmetry but those are few and far between . I'd dig the place as long as I could . A sight like that is worth a sore back . Good find !

Hooboy, loved this video! Except for the yellowjackets, I'm allergic so aaaaargh. Anyway-- considering the size and probable age of that point, I'd bet on it being an atlatl point and a real beauty too! It always drives me crazy when people call *all* of them 'arrowheads' (so thanks for not doing that!) when bows and arrows only date back about 2500-3000 years ago in North America as far as anyone's found to date, anyway, though that's always up for debate. Atlatl darts would carry points like that just beautifully, though-- man, I bet somebody was so pissed off when they lost their beautiful point! It's really fine work, and chert's kind of a pain to knap, even the really good stuff-- whoever made that point had some really amazing skills.
Have to say, I love seeing all that white sand; it reminds me so much of home and finding my first arrowhead. I found it on the banks of a stream in NW Florida that had been dredged out to open up a spring, and it was white chert too, just a little thing but perfectly shaped and probably not as old as yours... Alachua, maybe? Something like that.

I'm from Pensacola Florida and I found an arrowhead at the airport where I work. I believe I found it over 5 years ago. Right the edge of the parking lot in the dirt area just laying there.

Hi, Cris, sorry you found yellow jackets first--ugh and ouch! I love finding arrowheads and seeing others look for them, so please, look all you can! The agatized coral piece could also have been a section of a knife, very cool find and excellent material. And the point was beautiful! Looks like lots of opportunities at that site! I was wondering, and please excuse my ignorance, but given that fossilised sharks' teeth are so plentiful in Florida, did the local native americans ever used them as arrow heads, spearheads or weapons in general? I'm from the UK so it's all new to me. But really enjoying watching your videos!
People in dif parts of the world left behind tools that did use teeth, why reinvent the sharp pointy thing to make a weapon. Anyone creative could have easily used sharks teeth to make weapons but does not mean there is proof of it left behind.
Not ignorant at all! A lot of coastal tribes would use sharks teeth for cutting fibers and sometimes weapons, however a finely chipped edge is preferable as it is razor sharp, often fossilized teeth can be dull and only harm when you apply a lot of force. That was a great inference man

@@RichardHeadGaming Maori Warriors used a club like weapon which was ridged with shark teeth for cutting. Not only that but they also used stingray barbs to make spears.

I've used to live on a ranch in Comanche County, Texas and we found dozens of arrow heads without digging. We just used to walk the creek and dirt roads on our own property and you found them laying around on the ground. We never had to dig. I miss the ranch so much!!!

Cool find man. That is a nice one. I found this road cut that is like a mile high almost and terraced...there are fossils EVERYWHERE. I will try and start getting on videos next month

I’ve always wanted to dig for Native American artifacts! I took an archaeology class in high school then we went to a reservation & dug up arrowheads! It’d be so much fun to do that again! I’d be the crazy person doing that in the rain too! ☺️

When I bought my house they offered insurance in case your property got declared a historic native site.
I loved the video Cris. I'd like to see your future artifact trips to this spot and others. I haven't found much in the way of Native American Artifacts, but it's very interesting to me. I've spent time searching gravel bars in local creeks and lake shorelines in my area with limited success. Either I don't have the eye for this type of thing, aren't looking at the right spots, or just not very lucky. You have an eye for this stuff and it's really cool. Remember the hammer stone that you found on our trip? I picked it up and saw a fossil rock, tossed it in my spoil pile, then you picked it up and said, "do you know what this is?" I was clueless. But, I'm learning!. Please continue to share your thoughts on the culture of the people that left those treasures, that's interesting as well. Thanks again for sharing your video adventures.

My sister lives in Florida (Palatka) and we've been there and found Shark teeth on the beach. Maybe I should move there, but I stii wouldn't be able to walk much. Nice point you found. Cris, this is one of my favorite subjects outside music, space and physics to name a few. I also find fossils wherever I go. I love finding native artifacts. Though, the pieces I find are from different a people. Love watching. Sorry you got stung.
