Mum and dad took me to Star Wars at a drive in at 6 months old, the first movie I ever went to. I do not remember it. I also got taken to Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi at cinemas and don't remember those trips either. The first movie I have a memory of going to see with my dad is Ghostbusters, from 1984. Can't believe you have to wait for the next movie? Don't forget those poor saps/lucky bastards who were old enough to watch and understand this at the time had to wait 3 years!
Yes, when I was 9 yrs old ! , at the ( now non-existent ) Perth Entertainment Centre 😃 It was truly EPIC !!! to walk out of there suddenly knowing that Vader was Luke's Father !!!
@@danomau Yep I’d go with this. Have the prequels as an extended flashback and wrap it all up with ROTJ. Maybe add Rogue One ahead of ANH. Skip the sequels.
Intended to be watched? No, pretty sure it is intended to be chronological to the events in the galaxy. People only care about release order because of the most famous twist in film history.
The Emperor is mentioned very briefly in the first movie, Grand Moff Tarkin, the chief of the Death Star, says basically one sentence "The Emperor has disbanded the council, permanently" or something along those lines, mening the Imperial Senate.
I will always feel sad when I see anyone watching these movies for the first time, looking *down*, at a 15-inch laptop screen, and not *up*, at 60 ft x 30 ft movie theater screen.
I was 9 years old. My unforgettable father took us (me, my brother and my sister), by surprise, to the cinema to watch this movie. It was our very first time in a movie theater. We did not even had a TV at home. So, it was a fantastic experience to us. The episodes IV, V and VI are special. The characters are so human and the ideas of correctness, loyalty and good are very well crafted. I liked very much your video, because you can express your sincere emotions immediately after the scenes. Congratulations!
Saw this in the theatre as a kid when it came out. "No, I am your Father" blew my mind (and I think most people's). We had no idea. This is my favorite out of all the Star Wars movies.
A lightsaber is likely hot enough to melt the armored steel of the AT-AT's legs, but because the leg is such a large object with thick plating, it would take a long time, like chopping down a large oak tree with a small pocketknife.
I kinda hate to admit it, but I feel sorry for folks who watch blockbuster movies for the first time on the tiny screens of their laptops or tablets, and not on the giant screen of a theater...like I was able to...or at least on a decently large screened TV. Based on the way she is postured, it seems clear she is one of the unlucky ones. 😢
Frank Oz of Muppet fame was the voice actor for Yoda. The other cast and crew loved copying his Yoda voice so much, Frank had to make them stop because them mocking the voice was affecting his voice acting.
Yes, I was lucky enough to see this when it came out in theaters. I was 9 yrs old in 1980 when it came out. Upon leaving the ODEON complex in Glasgow onto a bustling Renfield Street it was a massive culture shock to go from being immersed in the Star Wars universe to then be reimmersed into into the real world.
There were actually a number of actors in the Darth Vader suit. In this episode, David Prowse, an actor and former body builder, provides the body acting while James Earl Jones, a famous voice actor, screen actor, and more, provides the voice. In other episodes, other actors make appearances in the suit as well. A number of stunt actors also donned the Vader suit for lightsaber fight choreography. As far as being able to see out the eye holes of the helmets, it is often speculated that Stormtroopers' aim is terrible because the helmets obstruct their view to aim.
A light saber could conceivably cut through the legs of the imperial walkers but it would take a long time, lol, and they're not going to stand still and let him do it.
The voice actor for Yoda is Frank Oz. He’s done many voices for The Muppets and Sesame Street. You can see him as the desk officer in The Blues Brothers.
I saw it in 1980 when it came out and I was 8 years old. It was not the version you saw and reacted to. The original had no cgi, no altered dialogue, no extra Wampa footage, no Ian McDiarmid playing the Emperor, and Boba Fett had a badass and sinister voice which got replaced by a Kiwi actor in the version you saw. The unaltered version is the best.
Just as glorious? Even more glorious. The most glorious. Han Solo saying I know in response to the big love bomb from Leia always struck me as he's been working on Leia to admit her feelings. What the movie doesn't do well is show you that three years have passed between blowing up the Death Star and the Battle of Hoth. They've been getting to know each other for three years. What it does show you is he's pretty much wearing his heart on his sleeve with Leia by the start of this movie and she's the one holding back. That and he's a cocky scoundrel!
Disney plus recently released a documentary on the Jedi master of music, John Williams. My Mom and I enjoyed it; had a couple of LOL moments. Highly recommend watching it
Thanks for the great reaction! And your video was well-edited. :) Episodes 1 through 6 are very unique in movie history because they were all under the artistic control of the original creator and artist (George Lucas). We were all learning as the movies went along because the movies were not based on earlier literature known to the audience. The Vader/Luke reveal stunned the world at the time. :) We had to wait three years to get episode 6. I think you will enjoy it. :)
I love how even back in 1977 George Lucas made sure to have a strong female lead and not force it but make it flow and feel natural and believable. Leah was completely feminine but highly intelligent as well as extremely capable. I am old fashioned and find a beautiful woman that stimulates me intellectually as well as physically. Her leadership skills make her a true partner, not just a pretty face.
57:11 More to the aspect of Lando, he did try to dissuade the Millennium Falcon from landing by ordering his men to deny him a berth. It was only when the Empire intervened that Lando was forced to grant them one. Lando was on Han's side from the start, but as you note, he has 5.4 million people who rely on him. He was trying to find an opportunity to turn the situation to his advantage, which eventually he did.
Loving your reactions to movies I first saw in theaters when I was young (Star Wars came out when I was 9, and Empire when I was 12)! And, better yet, my family saw these in the drive-in theater with the Dad's big ol' station wagon backed into the spot so we could open the tailgate and sit or lie down on cushions and pillows in the back of the car and eat the snacks we brought with us as we watched. 🙂 And it was more comfortable for my little sister to be able to be lying down when she would inevitably fall asleep. 😛 This movie's cliffhanger ending let to lots of lunchroom discussions about whether or not Vader was Luke's father. Sometimes it was easy to believe that it had to be a lie because believing a lie like that could wreck Luke's confidence and make it easier to turn him to the dark side, but then it was easy to believe that it was the truth because that truth would be the most likely to turn Luke to the dark side. We discussed and argued about this off and on for the years it took for the next movie to come out. 😀 And, like you, we wondered what Yoda meant when, after Obi Wan said that Luke was their last hope, Yoda said that there was another. We were so anxious to learn the answers to so many of the questions left open with this movie. 🙂 So glad to watch and enjoy this movie with you for your first time and see it through your eyes! 🙂
53:43 I totally get what you're saying, Lando really deserved some baby steps of faith here, he didn't have to help our gang at all, but he did. Btw, on some level Chewie must have realized this, because if he wanted Lando dead he could have crushed his neck in an instant. He was just showing that he was a little bit angry with Lando, in a comparatively friendly way for a Wookie. :)
Imagine: We had to wait 3 yrs for this. Also, apart from a very few Sci-fi series, there was nothing remotely like this at the time. Our anticipation was off the scale. Fortunately though, there were no social media spoilers. ; )
Heck the actors didn't even know that Vader was Luke's father. I believe only Mark Hamill, David Prowse who is the actor in Vader's suit and James Earl Jones, Vader's voice knew the twist and they kept quiet so it was a surprise to everyone including other cast members.
George Lucas in an interview mentioned that Luke trained with Yoda for over 2 years. He advanced so quickly because of how strong The Force is in Luke.
Whatever series of films you watch... ALWAYS watch in release order for first time viewing. You'll not only discover them as your viewers did, but you'll save yourself tons of headaches and potential spoilers. Viewing them in release order is the natural way to take in the story. Any story.
No, not an unpopular opinion. Empire Strikes back is widely considered by many to be the best overall. Although all three films of the original trilogy have their high points. I saw it back in 1980 (aged 10) in a cramped and packed cinema of only 100 people in those days. Vader being Luke's father had been kept a closely guarded secret by George Lucas to avoid the news leaking out, making sure audiences heard it for the first time in theatres. I remember people looking at each other in silent disbelief at that moment. Completely unexpected. The nostalgia is strong in this one!☺
While Vader is credited as the "Face" of evil brutality in this franchise, the Emperor is the true evil one. His power is more insidious than brutal and runs much deeper.
Great reaction. It sucks that the Yoda messing with Luke moment and the Darth Vader "I am your father" will never be a surprise to people because it has just become such a part of pop culture. When you saw them with no spoiler it was amazing!
Empire really is the "Best" Film in the SW universe for 36 years (Rogue One really blasted it out of the park for production and performance and cinematography).
Congratulations. This is the first comment section for Empire I've ever seen where someone doesn't try to convince people that the Wompa was added to cover for injuries Hamill got in a car wreck. (The timeline doesn't even match up, people.) Maybe as a species, we are finally advancing.
By the way -if you saw E.T. sooner than Empire it means you already saw Yoda prior too, because Yoda has a small funny cameo in E.T.(and you can easily find it on youtube)🙂 And E.T...well perhaps you can eventually see him in one of SW episdes too .-)
You have to give Luke big props for one thing--despite getting his butt handed to him by Vader, he never backed down, and even chose DEATH over joining the dark side of the Force. When I first saw this at age 12, I never grasped the fact that Luke was completely overmatched, and Vader was just toying with him at the start. I actually believed Luke would win. When he lost his hand, it was one of the biggest shocks in my young life as far as seeing that a hero could lose. Then...Vader's reveal totally caught me off guard and left me reeling. This was prime Lucas.
Ion canons or bombs are useful to disable a ship by temporarily fry the electrical circuits, it's like an EMP. The goal of the Rebels at the battle of Hoth is not to turn the tide, but is a delaying action to allow the ships to escape. Grim implications indeed... see the prequel trilogy for that. Of course Yoda reminds you of ET, there was one guy disguised as ET during the Halloween seen and ET went straight to that person ! (the soundtrack by the same composer even quotes Yoda's theme ! When you'll be watching Ep1, pay attention during the Senate scene, in a corner, there will be a bunch of ETs. This comes from the fact that Spielberg and Lucas quote eachother quite often in their movies. ET has a lot of Star Wars references; toys, in Eliott's bedroom. Tarkin mentioned the Emperor during the first Death Star scene in Ep4, saying that the Senate was disolved and that the Empire was now a full dictatorship and that Regional Governors had all authority over their assigned territories... The Emperor perfectly knows who Vader is, HE MADE Anakin become Vader ! Simply, dissociating the two allows him to better manipulate Vader. The blue gards are Lando's gards, not Imperials. The cyborg guy is called Lobot, he's indeed a cyborg. He serves as Lando's secretary and way to access and highjack computer systems too... Leia is heartbroken and angy. Chewie, whose culture is all about loyalty and honor just wants to kill Lando for his betrayal. You cannot really boast going against the Empire when a 19 km long Superstardestroyer is looming over your city with all its guns, fighters and troop complements... Vader's ship is that big. Ep5 is my favorite too.
It is very common liking this one more than the original one. This one is my favorite of the 9 (or 11, if you count Solo and Rogue 1, still my favorite)
The vast majority of people watch it in release order. Those that want others to watch it in a different way likely and probably watched them in release order. Enjoying your reactions so far .. This is where the fun begins 😉😎
I have worn a screen accurate Vader costume, and yes you can see through ish. Same as in Stormtrooper gear. Love you commentary and thoughts ❤ Hoth was not a good day for the Rebels. 1000 soldiers fought to buy time for the transports to get away. Less than 100 survived. And 3/4 of the speeder pilots died. Also fun fact, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fischer had an affair during A New Hope. Frank Oz voices and performs Yoda.
The Imperial Walkers (AT-ATs), like many other vehicles in Star Wars, are made of durasteel. Vader's armor is also made of this, but the stormtroopers armor is not. Durasteel can resist damage from lightsabers, but will be melted with extended exposure, much like a plasma torch to steel. Vader's armor can deflect glancing blows but not hits with decent force behind them. It would be unlikely one could chop off the leg of an AT-AT while it is moving unless the user was harnessed to it and had some time.
Jeanet, you do not yet realize your importance. You have only begun to discover your power. Join me, and I will complete your training. With our combined strength, we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy. It is your destiny..
"Signs of life aren't the problem..." Signs of life immediately become the problem. 😆 A lightsaber could ultimately cut through the leg of an AT-AT (walkers), but not quickly. "Wait, I'm being paranoid. Let's calm down and hope that's not what he's saying." [Darth Vader has entered the chat] 😉
If you can't believe you have to wait until the next film to see them save Han...imagine how we Gen Xers who watched the original had to wait 3 YEARS for the next episode :D
They left Han's fate in the air because at that point it was not sure whether Harrison Ford would return for the third movie. Marvel Comics which published Star Wars since '77 at this point had to do three years of stories about trying to find Han, without knowing whether it will happen in the third movie or not.
It's a great movie! btw there are star wars books too. I had toy figures of Luke, Han, Chewbacca etc as a kid in the 80s. My childhood that I remember was late 80s to mid 90s; I graduated high school in 1996. 🙂
Words and intention are everything (do or do not, there is no 'try'). There are words that are stronger than others. The next time you ask something from someone else, ask "Would you get that for me?", not "Could you get that for me." The latter is so much weaker than the former.
You definitely know how to watch a movie … and your decision to watch all the episodes in their release order was really wise. You’re reacting to a great saga, so great that it earned itself its own worldwide celebration day, which is May 4th, that is May the fourth - like in “may the Force (be with you)”. As additional proof of what a great saga this is, here you have the best organist in the world deciding to do a cover of Star Wars theme almost 9 years ago: ua-cam.com/video/Yp5HpjhKHKs/v-deo.html In the next one (Return Of The Jedi), you’ll have my most favorite line of all the movies I ever watched in my entire life … I’ll reveal it after you watch that one too. Looking forward to your next reaction. Salutations from Romania …
1:04:33 not weird / 1:05:07 not unpopular at all. Pretty sure this is the top one in the entire saga for a LOT of people. It just builds up the Empire as a strong opponent, so we can leave aside any hope that defeating it will be a cake walk.
I more meant when people talk about Star Wars a lot of the main characters can be recognized just cause of their relevance in fan lore, but the emperor is not someone I'd heard mention of through fan lore.
There's a grainy version of the Holiday Special on UA-cam. The animated sequences introduce Boba Fett who is the Bounty Hunter who took Han Solo. I would watch those. But, overall it is almost pure cringe. Harrison Ford singing at the end looking like he wants to die of shame is great too' Carrie Fisher would put it on when quest came over when she wanted them to go home. Cool little bit of extra lore that came full circle in The Mandalorian.
Yeah you understood Obi Wan right. Think of it as the christian equivalent of a person has died but their soul may remain. I think for most people this is the best SW movie, me included. Personally my favouritness order is 5, 3, 6, 4, 1, 2. I think for most people its smt like 5, 6, 4, 3, 1, 2 tho. Thank you for sharing the reaction c:
You're not far off.. E t and yoda live in the same galaxy... In fact you'll see the e t species in Episode 1 phantom menace Star Wars movie. During a senate scene you'll see them In one of the pods. It's only for a few seconds but it's there... It's also y. Et says home. During that Halloween scene. He recognizes yoda. Species. And yes e t uses the force throughout the movie
I remember seeing the trailer for The Empire strikes back in *1979* when I went to the cinema to see the *James Bond* movie *Moonraker.* My 11 year old mind was blown by the trailer, which said *"Coming to your glalaxy next summer"* I was so excited. This was in the later months of 1979, so there was still at least another 8 months of the 3 year wait to go. It was unbearable... *1979 TRAILER* ua-cam.com/video/nccmNk8gsOc/v-deo.html When it eventually turned up, it was well worth the 3 year wait, and I was there opening night in 1980. To this day, its not only my favourite Star Wars movie, but my favourite movie of all time. I still have the vinyl soundtrack my parents bought for me, for Christmas 1980, Sadly the wait for *Return of the Jedi* wasn't worth it in my opinion. I loathe that movie, which I felt was nowhere near as good as the first two. Especially the version you'll be watching, which has some ridiculous changes to it.
No spoilers, but the original Star Wars Trilogy does have the greatest retcons of all-time lol. You'll have your own opinion if you notice them, of course.
Were you lucky enough to see this in theaters?
Absolutely. Especially with the revelations. I was 12. Also, you are not alone; I think most people think this is the best of all of the movies.

The Emperor is mentioned very briefly in the first movie, Grand Moff Tarkin, the chief of the Death Star, says basically one sentence "The Emperor has disbanded the council, permanently" or something along those lines, mening the Imperial Senate.
"The Emperor has dissolved the council permanently."
"The Emperor has dissolved the council members in acid temporarily"

A Force sensitive individual usually start the training as a Padawan at 8, 9 years old.
I recall it being younger ... Before turning 5 🤔 that is mentioned in the prequels
there is very little that can withstand a lightsaber. forcefields can, for exmple. and some very rare metal alloys like beskar and cortosis can too.
Just as glorious? Even more glorious. The most glorious.

Saw this at it's release. Battle of Hoth still stands out as a highlight for me.
It has to be said.. imagine waiting 3 *years* for the third movie! That was us in the original release era....
when i was a kid Luke's reaction to Vader telling him he is his dad just broke my heart..i thought he must be the best actor ever lol.
The vast majority of people watch it in release order. Those that want others to watch it in a different way likely and probably watched them in release order. Enjoying your reactions so far .. This is where the fun begins 😉😎
This is my favorite! Along with the next one and ep 3.
Ditto: 5,3,6,1,4,2 for me in that order, lol
I have worn a screen accurate Vader costume, and yes you can see through ish. Same as in Stormtrooper gear.
Love you commentary and thoughts ❤
Hoth was not a good day for the Rebels.
Frank Oz is Yoda aka Miss Piggy and Fozzy Bear from the Muppets as well as a few of the other voices
Han was leaving to pay Jabba but instead got pursued by the Empire.
Jeanet, you do not yet realize your importance. You have only begun to discover your power. Join me, and I will complete your training. With our combined strength, we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy. It is your destiny..
Great reaction video, I'm glad you loved Empire! It's still my favorite movie. I'm looking forward to your reaction to Return of the Jedi.
"Signs of life aren't the problem..."
Signs of life immediately become the problem. 😆
A lightsaber could ultimately cut through the leg of an AT-AT (walkers), but not quickly.
"Wait, I'm being paranoid. Let's calm down and hope that's not what he's saying."
[Darth Vader has entered the chat] 😉
Great reaction video, I'm glad you enjoyed Empire. It's always been my favorite movie. I'm looking forward to your reaction to Return of the Jedi.
"After all, he's only a Wookie."
C-3PO just being casually racist 😆
You have great insights into story structure and foreshadowing but still get caught up in the fun. 😘
It's a great movie! btw there are star wars books too. I had toy figures of Luke, Han, Chewbacca etc as a kid in the 80s. My childhood that I remember was late 80s to mid 90s; I graduated high school in 1996. 🙂
I graduated in 1981. :)
@@SGlitz sweet. that's when the IBM PC came out. 🙂 That was my first computer at home, that my dad gave me in 1987 when he upgraded to 80386. 🙂
Words and intention are everything (do or do not, there is no 'try'). There are words that are stronger than others. The next time you ask something from someone else, ask "Would you get that for me?", not "Could you get that for me." The latter is so much weaker than the former.
This was a great reaction 🙏🏽💯👍 I study the force in real life it’s real I’ve even seen the force choke in real life
May the force be with you 🌘🌌
not just water proof he is monster proof too
Great reaction, cant wait for the other ones :)
You definitely know how to watch a movie … and your decision to watch all the episodes in their release order was really wise. You’re reacting to a great saga, so great that it earned itself its own worldwide celebration day, which is May 4th, that is May the fourth - like in “may the Force (be with you)”. As additional proof of what a great saga this is, here you have the best organist in the world deciding to do a cover of Star Wars theme almost 9 years ago:

In the next one (Return Of The Jedi), you’ll have my most favorite line of all the movies I ever watched in my entire life … I’ll reveal it after you watch that one too.
May the force be with you
The Emperor was mentioned twice in the first movie.
I more meant when people talk about Star Wars a lot of the main characters can be recognized just cause of their relevance in fan lore, but the emperor is not someone I'd heard mention of through fan lore.
@@gonnaneedapillowclub Really? He's pretty important to the overall lore of the entire film series and a healthy portion of the extended media.
@wyldink1 yep, never heard of him before I watched the movies.
Many Star Wars fans (me) think this was the best one
Imagine having to wait 3 years for the next film...
Great job!
I can’t wait to see your reaction to Return of the Jedi!
Watch in release order, then, if you want, watch in episodic order.
nice reaction, I liked it
Yeah you understood Obi Wan right.
Seems like most people rate this as their favorite, my favorite is still Episode 6 Return of the Jedi.
Now that you have seen this, you must watch this video clip, "SEAGULLS! (Stop It Now)" -- A Bad Lip Reading of The Empire Strikes Back .
59:30 Yes he did. Boba Fett just took him away. 😜
28:20 Yoda and ET were both muppets.
The something that you think you know probably is what you know, or maybe it isn't 😊
*1979 TRAILER* ua-cam.com/video/nccmNk8gsOc/v-deo.html
When it eventually turned up, it was well worth the 3 year wait, and I was there opening night in 1980.
Watch Ryan George pitch meeting on Star Wars. It’s funny
It's not mentioned in the movies but in the books on his way to pay Jabba the Hutt his she was hijacked and they took his money
Please watch the original version of Return of the Jedi not the remastered one it’s far better
How hot is a Taun Taun?
Luke warm...😂
You got fooled by Yoda 🤣😂😄
