This was the first Marilyn Manson single I bought... My parents took the CD back to the store and cussed out the manager for letting me buy it because it had a "parental advisory" sticker on it. So, I went back the next day and bought it again....

You know times are rough when Marilyn Manson is in his own way sending a positive message to kids getting bullied in school to grow up and be somebody as opposed to shooting up a school and ruining themselves and hurting people.

I wrote a song called “Lunchbox,” and some journalists have interpreted it as a song about guns. Ironically, the song is about being picked on and fighting back with my Kiss lunch box, which I used as a weapon on the playground. In 1979, metal lunch boxes were banned because they were considered dangerous weapons in the hands of delinquents.

I still have my MM poster from that era with Manson in the middle and Daisy and the rest flanking Manson's right and left with that Wonka lettering spelling the bands name. I have all my posters from those 90's teen years all rolled up and stored away. Except the giant Prodigy poster I got from Tower Records the day Fat of the Land dropped. Kinda makes me wanna take them out and go down memory lane and remember those friends. 🥺

I'm 15 year old boy and a metalhead. I accidantely discovered Marilyn Manson one day this summer, few months ago. I'm so glad to discover him. He really changed my life. Antichrist Superstar is my Favorite Album, I listened to Mechanical Animals and Holy Wood, Smells Like Children EP(My first Marilyn Manson Record) and now I'm listening to Portrait Of An American Family. I love him not only as musician, but as an intelligent, educated and just great human. I love messages behind his songs and Music Videos are super cool. Otherwise it would just feel like now where I'm working all the time with no money.

I saw Marilyn Manson opening for Nine Inch Nails (along with the Jim Rose Circus) at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix on October 11, 1994. I had never heard of them, and they were touring in support of Portrait of an American Family (1994). I loved it, and I bought the album immediately. "Get Your Gunn" is still one of my favorite songs. Brian (Marilyn) is actually quite intelligent, even though most people only think of him as a shock-rocker.

    • @rum-ham

I remember that tour because I had some friends who went to the NIN show in Salt Lake City, Utah and the next day they told me that NIN had ripped up a Book of Mormon on stage at the show. It turned out that it was MM who did it but I also had no idea who MM was at the time (no one did). NIN and MM both ended up getting perma-banned from the arena (The Delta Center) by the Mormon guy who owned it and the story hit the local news 😂. It was basically free publicity for MM.

@Rich Chappel You mention "most people only think" -- most people are fucking morons, as you must know. Shock rockers are among the most intelligent; observant, prescient beings in the mix. Frank Zappa, to Alice Cooper, to Ozzy, to Lady Gaga (sure, more shock pop), with Marilyn Manson firmly in the continuum. Don't love it all, but the unapologetic truth and genius there is transcendent.

When I was in high school (that's when I first started listening to him), I was very wary about listening to his music because of all the stuff he's known for today. As you mentioned above, it's not that his theatrics are a bad thing, but his older stuff (and his stuff with the Spooky Kids) had a variety of rock and metal influences -- industrial, funk, heavy, etc. He was/is a very talented artist, but Marilyn Mason's past eras really showcased his talent as a musician and knowledge of music.

Maybe it’s cause I lived in Akron oH and he’s from Canton or whatever, but Portrait of an American family was pretty much everywhere round here. Saw them a few times, first was a free show at the Agora that was apparently the kickoff for the antichrist superstar tour or really just when he decided he was the Antichrist superstar and went with. Great show, delivered on all the energy I heard to expect. Even came out on the good old stilts, one of the last times if I’m not wrong. Met and talked to his dad for a bit in the audience- nice dude, easy to spot as the only person wearing khaki dress pants and no black at all, lol. Anyways, wanted to say the portrait was great but none of the following albums were quite as good or rather didn’t managed to be quite the zeitgeist that portrait was, not for lack of trying tho

The energy of the old Manson records is just fucking incredible. Everything up through Holy Wood was just excellent, but Portrait is so unique. It's not as grand as the ones that came after, but it has those cheeky samples that really gives it a 90s feel, since I always associate sampling like that with 90s hip hop culture. It also kind of has this 60s/70s psychedelic rock vibe that is absent from subsequent Manson albums. I feel like this song is also when parents probably started getting fearful of Manson, and sort of made him into this cultural boogie man. If you weren't born in the early 90s, you have no idea how much of a social villain he was - parents didn't want their kids listening to Marilyn Manson. They didn't really want you listening to Korn either, but Manson was taking all of the heat off of the other guys and was something of a lightning rod for the alternative scene. He did well with it too, up until about 2002 or so he was still "that guy" and sold a lot of records to angsty teens because of it.

I was obsessed with the heaviest shit you could think of by then and even though into everything from Skinny Puppy to darkthrone , Morbid Angel , Goethes Erben etc, etc ... this album sounded punk af , exactly like the 1st time I listened to minisdtry a couple years prior to that ... there´s a good comparison actually ... 1st time I listened to " The mind is a terrible thing to taste " - you simply cannot help but enjoy this kind of energy/ charisma .

This has always been my favorite MM album. I grew up in Ft Lauderdale and was about 18 when they started to blow up. We used to see manson around town, in the movie theater, their gigs listed in RAG magazine, etc.... this video was filmed in a skating rink that probably everyone in ft lauderdale has been to at one time or another. We went there several times on school field trips.
This era of MM was very representative of the sound of many local "heavy" bands at the time. Amboog-A-Lard, Collapsing Lungs (who practiced in the warehouse next to my band's), etc .i dont remember all the names..lol.. but at the time, the once ubiquitous grunge scene was disintegrating, and the rave scene was becoming very popular in s. florida and other places. Grunge was completely anti-image. MM took the opportunity to swing it around fully and make image very much a part of their band. Even though it wasn't, to a lot of kids at the time this seemed like a new thing, and it was very interesting to a lot of people.

KDGaming I'm not saying that at all... I'll always be a fan. I personally like Portrait through Mechanical Animals and those albums i think are just amazing. Everything since then has been scattered and there are good songs on every record but idk, it's just not the same for me. I just don't think the band has progressed musical as they could have.
Don't get me wrong, i am pissed because i live in the one city that he had to cancel after his accident. I was going to go see them again, i cant imagine not liking him or the band. I just think their earlier stuff is better.

As far as musicality goes this will always be one of my favorite Manson songs because it was an exploration of so many sounds. The snippets of movie/tv voices, the spoken word, rap-style lyricism, and the melodic chorus with groovy guitar riffs that carry the song from verse to verse. Portraits was a great first album and it only got better and bolder with time. Manson has made a musical evolution work in his favor, something a lot of rockstars fail to see through.

    Break it down...
    On, we plow!

The big bully try to stick his finger in my chest
Try to tell me, tell me he's the best
I don't really give a good goddamn, 'cause
    [Pre-Chorus]
I got my lunchbox and I'm armed real well
I got my lunchbox and I'm armed real well
I got my lunchbox and I'm armed real well
    ("I'm making my lunch!")

    "Fire, I bring you fire
    Fire, I bring you..."
    [Verse 2]
I got the pencils in my pocket, try to put me down
Wanna go out, gotta get out to the playground
Gonna throw down at the playground
    I wanna go out
    [Pre-Chorus]
Next motherfucker gonna get my metal

    "It's the most beautiful thing."
"It's beautiful to be made into a tattle tale or be forced to admire authority, or sell yourself for a piece of candy."
    Yeah!

I remember the 90's and when I went from listening to Death, Crowbar, Morbid Angel, Alice in Chains, Pantera, Iron Madian and Napalm Death to NIN and MM. I had just moved to Florida in 96 and never heard of Marilyn Manson and the spooky Kids, I was instantly drawn to their sounds. Fond memories got my first Ride a 1989 Trans Am and fixed it up nice. Painted it Candy Apple Red with all Black leather interior, added 2 12 inch subwoofers to the smallest truck ever built replaced all my oem speakers with Pioneer and added a new Pioneer CD player multi-changer. I even remember the girls from back then being the craziest. Trying to outdo each other in how goth or shocking they could look. Fun Times indeed.
