Valkyrie is a 2008 thriller film directed by Bryan Singer, written by Christopher McQuarrie and Nathan Alexander, starring Tom Cruise. The film is set in Nazi Germany during World War II and depicts the 20 July plot in 1944 by German army officers to assassinate Adolf Hitler and to use the Operation Valkyrie national emergency plan to take control of the country. The film was released by American studio United Artists and stars Cruise as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, one of the key plotters. The supporting cast includes Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Eddie Izzard, Terence Stamp, and Tom Wilkinson.

Discovering from Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel that the bomb had not k*lled Hitler, Fromm refused to initiate Valkyrie, only to learn that General Friedrich Olbricht had initiated in his name; refusing to co-operate, he was removed and arrested by the conspirators and replaced by General Erich Hoepner.
Meanwhile, Carl-Heinrich von Stülpnagel, military governor of occupied France, managed to disarm the SD and SS, and captured most of their leadership. He travelled to Günther von Kluge's headquarters and asked him to contact the Allies, only to be informed that Hitler was alive. (Wikipedia)

There's a streak of sardonic humour in "Killed" being censored right next to "Hitler". A mere 5 years ago, Hitler would likely have been the word people were cagey about.

Probably the same as historically since the allies already had decided for unconditional surrender of Germany and Stauffenberg had no interest in establishing a democracy or anything else. He just wanted to get rid of Hitler and sue for peace to fight the Soviet.
They managed to disarm the SS and only fell short of replacing the government because Hitler was alive, obviously.

I am tired of all the people complaining about the acting because of the lack of german accents. Those are two distinct things people. The acting is fine!
Think I read somewhere that the director did not want the cast to use German accent, but speak in their natural English accent
It’s funny though because in other parts of the movie, other actors are speaking English with a German accent at the same time Tom Cruise is speaking with his natural accent

This is a fantastic film. Tom Cruise's best role in my opinion. I've been studying WWII for over 45 years, and this event is my favorite to read and study. Valkyrie follows the historical record perfectly. The actor who played Friedrich Fromm was superb.

I chose to use imperial units of length in this case because the USA is one of three countries in the world that still uses feet and inches as part of its customary weights and measures. The other two are Liberia and Myanmar. Sorry if you are incapable of mental arithmetic to convert to units you are more familiar with.

What I don’t get when people hate on this film is always how they complain about the accents not matching at all, but in another movie, Death of Stalin, (Granted it has a less serious tone), everyone says it was a good idea not to have authentic accents because it would only make it worse.

General Fromm was on the fence the entire time and never committed to the plot. Why they kept him around is surprising to me. They should've gotten rid of him somehow long before the attempt was made.

I think the thing that pissed me off most about this movie is the American accents and no ability for actors to act. Could have at least made it a German American accent. Nope that dudes British and that dudes and American and not one of these twits makes me think they could be German.

As a german, I agree. Tom "Captain Scientology" Cruise ruined this movie as well as the director did. And fun fact: the historical Person Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg was 1,94m tall. I think Captain Scientology isn't 😅

@@Humblemumble7 Don't worry, I won't tell 😂 And while this is kind of a compromise, it also defeats the purpose. Having actors speak in their natural accents is supposed to help them focus on delivery, instead of pronunciation. At least that's the general idea.
Why on earth would that matter for immersion or "accuracy"? They all spoke German, so anything they say is maximum inaccurate either way.
