My Great Grandparents, Grandparents, and my father are buried in Shattuck's Grove Cemetery. In the video, you can see all of my family's stones. As a young girl, I visited Shattuck's Grove Cemetery often. My family's stone is the obelisk with the "B" at the top, across from the baby's mort-safe. On the stone inside the mort safe was inscribed "Our Littlest Treasure". My sister and I used to read it each time we visited. Sadly the inscription has worn away. Shattuck's grove truly is a beautiful place.

Sometimes family members would take turns guarding a grave until the body would have decomposed enough that it would have been useless to the resurrection men. I have never seen a mortsafe in western Canada but there might be some down east where older cemeteries can be found.
Thanks to Jack for the information and to Ron for following up. That cage was beautifully crafted. Would love to find a old picture of some of these when they were new. I guess I assumed it was a protection against wild animals digging so this was enlightening. Grave robbing had to be a big business back then! Thanks again for sharing this with us.🙂
I'm wondering if those ornaments that you showed on the side of the cage, were a sort of bell that would ring if somebody tried to bypass the cage, and send them off running. At one time, they could have been loud before erosion took over. Just a thought.....
I was thinking about the bells they put on graves in case the person was accidentally buried alive, but unless there had been a rope at one time that eroded, that would not be what they were.
@@lisalewis5664 Well, that's another thought to consider. I still feel more, however, that they're connected with grave robbers. Hey, there could be other reasons, too, that you and I haven't thought of. :)
Graves did have Bell's on them back then, and earlier in the Centries before. But I think it was due to, people being burried alive. A lot of times hundred's of years ago. They would assume someone was dead, because maybe of shallow breathing or something. When they weren't sure if someone was dead, they would put a bell on the grave, so if the person woke up, and they really weren't dead. They could ring the bell, so that they could be dug up! Crazy but it was true! Catalepsy was a illness, that sent people to the morgue, when they were really alive. Because it made doctors think the person was dead, when they were very much alive. Today if you have that, you have to wear a bracelet at all times, so people will know!

I bet these ones with cement and the head stone right in the cement are others to prevent robbing. More or less sealed the grave in with a huge piece of concrete I see a handful in this video I bet this cemetery had major robbing issues and they did this to a lot of burials

If you ever come out south say to Oklahoma, I've got a couple a of graves and backstories I know from down here. Alot of them are in the town I'm from and one of them was my distant cousin Denise Haraway whos on Netflix's The Innocent Man. There's about 4 different graves at Vamoosa Cemetery that have really interesting backstories of crime and murder.
I ran across a mortsafe in Kingston Ontario Canada many years ago similar to this one. The "ornaments" I saw hanging from the actual mortsafe were bells at one time. This was to alert people watching the grave that it was being disturbed. This was what I was told by the groundskeeper.
I was born in Edinburgh and now live about 60/70 miles from Aberdeen/Aberdeenshire, I think you will love all our cemeteries, you will see some very old headstones and graves, crypts and Mausoleums, it is a country rich in History and intrigue. Enjoy your visit to my home land x
Enjoyed that, so interesting. When you come over here to the U.K. depending on the time of year make sure you have you thermals, it’s very cold up there, I’m from Manchester about half way down the country an we get lots of awful rain.
When you get out here to AZ, Ron, there are 2 old cemeteries in Central Arizona. One is Adamsville, close to Florence and the Pinal up toward Superior. Wyatt Earp's wife is buried in the Pinal Cemetery. Thought I would give you a heads-up on these old ones. I will be living outside of Florence and both are pretty close to us. Great video Ron!
Hi Ron, thanks again for sharing all the interesting back stories & debunking myths. It's sad that these ghouls had no regard for the dead people & forcing the live ones to the same fate. It always boils down to Money & Greed!! We're looking forward to your upcoming trips to Europe... we're with you !!!
I’m a new subscriber and I love your videos. Your story telling is very interesting and you tell a story with a lot of respect. Thank you for all of hardwork and for sharing your videos!
Thank you for this very interesting episode. I live in Edinburgh, where, as you say, the resurrectionists were very active. Graves with similar cages over them are common in local graveyards. What we call a "mortsafe" looks like a large metal coffin, with steel bands across the lid, which are padlocked shut. In the 19th century, bodies were not treated in any way to preserve them, so, after only a week or so in the safe, they would have deteriorated to the point where the anatomy schools would not be interested in buying them. The bodies would then be buried, and the mortsafe therefore ready for the next occupant. Several cemeteries have towers, where a watchman would keep guard at night. However, this was not a well paid job, and some watchmen may have been amenable to "looking the other way" for a monetary consideration. I would particularly recommend Greyfriars churchyard, in the centre of the City for both fascinating graves, including several variations of the protective cages. There is an excellent example of a true mortsafe in the Museum, a few hundred yards from Greyfriars. You will also be interested in the legend of Greyfriars Bobby, whose statue stands by the entrance to the Churchyard. There is another reusable mortsafe at Colington, in the South Western suburbs. I can also recommend Dean cemetery. I live some 4 miles South of the City centre. When the area was developed for housing in the 1970s, bronze age burials were found. The nearest of these are about 100 yards from my house. By the way, Aberdeen is in Scotland, rather than Ireland.
This is so interesting but sad at the same time. This almost looks as if one could dig this up with some effort, so I agree that maybe something was originally on top? And are the bells shaped like a figure of some sort? Katie is listed in the 1880 census as living with her parents at her grandparents house. Her mother was around 50 when she had Katie! Yikes! Sadly, Katie was an only child. RIP sweet angel. 😢
We haved very similar here in Far North Queensland Australia, although ours are from around the same era they are the cots of deceased children pulled down and made in to gates,,,very beautiful idea and they look so differant
I have been in the funeral service profession for over 40 years. The grey granite monument is not original. The white pieces of marble on the corners are pieces of the old original monument. I so enjoy your videos. When the grave robbers began to steal bodies is when people would use concrete and steel vaults.
I live in Australia. My ancestors came out on the first fleet. My great great grandfather made the surround for their grave site. It is pretty spectacular for its day. Along the same lines as you were looking at.
Hey Ron! You might have already tried or heard of doing this. Try spraying the hard to read ones with a spray bottle of water, I'm pretty sure it will help the letters to be more clear without harming the headstone. I know you've already got a lot to carry around! Although sometimes sad and tragic, I enjoy your videos and the history 👍

Neat
Sometime when you are back in the Rockford area, you might be interested in New Milford cemetery. There are graves that date back to the first half of the 19th century. Some stones were damaged by ammunition from nearby Camp Grant during WWI training, I believe.
Most welcome, I have enjoyed watching your channel, and glad that you were directed there. I have never seen one until I was at Shattuck cemetery, and I believed it was a rather unique find when I discovered the grave. If you are ever near Winnebago cnty, there is the tomb of Magill McCormick that is quite interesting as well. If you ever need any info, I am always very willing to assist as much info for Boone, Winnebago, DeKalb, and Ogle counties. Thanks for sharing, and for the shootout. Will be looking forward for more videos here in the future.
way to go, hope I didn't butcher your name, lol. I'll check that stuff out; Magill.
is it this one? looks intriguing..
Winnebago cnty, there is the tomb of Magill McCormick ....www.findagrave.com/memorial/7862015/joseph-medill-mccormick
keep those recommendations coming, you are hot, hahaha. sign up on my instagram, easier to chat....I usually don't see replies here, they don't alert me. thanks again.
@@FacesoftheForgotten Yes, that is correct, I have been to McCormick s tomb, McCormick is no longer in the tomb and has been relocated to the cemetery. The location is on Montigue rd, just off of Route 20 in Winnebago cnty. No, the name is fine, it is actually my pseudo name as I took it from my grandfather would say that a fool is a Jackanapes....ha ha. Thank you for your interest, and conversation, and I will get over and follow on Instagram.
Hi John from WI. I saw allot of American Flags Thanks to the Vets. for your service. An to the baby Eason, Rest in Peace you are now with our Lord in Heaven ! Also I'm looking forward to seeing your show on the Irish Cemetery.
you should check out the alter area of the red witch in stafford va. at Red Lake / witch's pond . when I was a kid some 55 years ago . we went there in the middle of the night on a full moon in the fall when the pond turns red there was a Iron coffin chained to the alter in the shape of a cross , you can read the story of the red on google the casket is no longer there some say it was stolen some say the church took and put in a place away from the eye's of the public . pretty cool cemetery as well back to colonial days they is a lock on the gate but people just walk around it . the main land marker there id a 30 foot tall Christ Cross stands next to US rt 1 there are to of the families grave stones being swalloed by a cedar tree . good luck !
“We are in” love it!!💕
A very beautiful place, that child was very much loved for her to be protected
You should get a group trip planned. Maybe 15 people or so to go to Ireland or Scotland. Maybe get a group travel rate.
I would love to go
I would also like to go.
I cant wait till We go to Scotland and Ireland , i have Scotch Irish and Welsh blood so it is exciting🙏💜🇦🇺
Me too, I've been dreaming of going for 20 years and keep putting it off , I'll be too old to enjoy it if I don't get on it
Scottish, not scotch which is an alcoholic drink.
So fascinating! I have honestly never seen a cage grave before! Thank you for sharing ❤
So sad that you had to put these cages to protect the body from being stolen.
This is fantastic! I've learned so much. As always, thank you!
There is a little town in MO called Newtonia and there is a dirt road that dead ends into a civil war cemetery. I would love for you to go there.
Never heard of this. Very interesting. Thank you Ron!
This was absolutely fascinating, what a great video, you learn something new everyday...Bless you Ron, for bringing this to us.
Looks like a baby crib with a little canopy on it.Thankyou Ron very interesting of the older days..If I had to give up my laptop I couldn't see you!!!

Notice these ones have the same style bronze marker in the cement? As the first one you showed Ron? I bet these ones with cement and the head stone right in the cement are others to prevent robbing. More or less sealed the grave in with a huge piece of concrete I see a handful in this video
I bet this cemetery had major robbing issues and they did this to a lot of burials
Never have I ever seen one of these graves! Wow. At least now I know what it's about if I ever do see one. Thank you for this rather fascinating video!
Wow, it is sad how many things people will do for money.
While it is certainly wrong to disturb the dead this practice advanced the knowledge of human anatomy.
I love this guy. He is a great orator
Hey Ron! This is out by me, Rockford-way, how cool! Thx for making the trip. Don’t know if you’ve been to Graceland up on the north side of Chicago, south of Clark & Montrose but many famous architects are there, Daniel Burnham, absolutely beautiful & interesting. Used to live by there, was so nice to walk there in the fall. Anyway, thx again, love what you do. Take care!
How fascinating! I googled images of a mortsafe and found a similar one that had a concrete lid on it. I'm wondering if those 4 posts held one also.
Yes, I bet you're right. That would explain those pieces of mortar left on top of the posts.
But with the writing on dont think anything would have been on top of them or no need for the writing
Wow incredible and amazing stories and details may they all rest in peace
The ornaments were probably bells.
I ran across a mortsafe in Kingston Ontario Canada many years ago similar to this one. The "ornaments" I saw hanging from the actual mortsafe were bells at one time. This was to alert people watching the grave that it was being disturbed. This was what I was told by the groundskeeper.
Interesting, thanks for sharing
I was born in Edinburgh and now live about 60/70 miles from Aberdeen/Aberdeenshire, I think you will love all our cemeteries, you will see some very old headstones and graves, crypts and Mausoleums, it is a country rich in History and intrigue. Enjoy your visit to my home land x
Enjoyed that, so interesting. When you come over here to the U.K. depending on the time of year make sure you have you thermals, it’s very cold up there, I’m from Manchester about half way down the country an we get lots of awful rain.
Very interesting! Thank you for such an informative video. I really enjoyed it. Well done as always ☺️
Awesome lead!
Never seen one like that. Ty both.
GREAT VIDEO RON !!! I REALLY LOVE & ENJOY your videos !!!! Please KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT WORK !!!!
Great video Ron. I have several ancestors who are buried here!
A beautiful place.Thank You!
I never knew such a thing existed.
Wow you learn something new everyday! Thank you 🌺 🌸 🌺
Only ever come back to untube for RON 🇬🇧❤️🇬🇧❤️🇬🇧❤️🇬🇧❤️🇬🇧
I had never heard of such a thing! C very interesting!
Iv'e seen these mortsafes before but didn't know what they were for. Thanks to Jack and Ron, another learning experience hands down!
I’m a new subscriber and I love your videos. Your story telling is very interesting and you tell a story with a lot of respect. Thank you for all of hardwork and for sharing your videos!
Thanks Jack!
Oh, how sad! I can only imagine their grief at that time.
Really interesting. Thank you.
We haved very similar here in Far North Queensland Australia, although ours are from around the same era they are the cots of deceased children pulled down and made in to gates,,,very beautiful idea and they look so differant
I enjoy this channel. I must say, the cornfield near the cemetery looks good.
Thank you Jack! Super interesting find! :)
I saw these in Virginia City NV. I was told that they were to keep the devil and ghosts out and to protect the souls of the ones buried there
I have been in the funeral service profession for over 40 years.
That was a great find!
Absolutely love your Videos 😁😁😁👍👍👍👍
When you come to Scotland. Grey friars kirk yard is amazing in Edinburgh. Definite must see vist
What an interesting story. I have never heard of a mortsafe.
Think ur vids are brilliant. You do a fantastic job. Thank you x
Hey Ron! You might have already tried or heard of doing this. Try spraying the hard to read ones with a spray bottle of water, I'm pretty sure it will help the letters to be more clear without harming the headstone. I know you've already got a lot to carry around! Although sometimes sad and tragic, I enjoy your videos and the history 👍
thanks, I have done that sometimes, like the Marilla episode (trilogy)
I think this is a very interesting video Ron.
I have never heard of a mortgage.
You are always teaching us new things. Great video Ron.💙
Thanks you my friend see you soon
That was amazing. Thank you to both of you!
Incredible to find a preserved mort-safe for a young child🌹
Enjoyed very much. Thank you.
So interesting!
Thanks Ron!!
I never heard of that before. Interesting video.
I love the music you play with the videos you do
Wow...very interesting... that's my first time to see that kind of stuff ..
Very interesting! I didn’t know such things existed.
