It's funny reading these comments about speed when neither of these bikes were built for speed. Heck, take a Harley or Yamaha 1200 cc cruiser and put it up against a 600 cc sport bike and the 600 wins every time. A bike is only as good as its intended purpose. Stop making either of these out as "fast" bikes - especially that little 883.
I just test rode the Bolt today and loved it! Lightweight, low seat height and well balanced. I took it right up to the Interstate and even without a windshield, it was a dream at 70 mph. Shifts smoothly with plenty of power and very little vibration. Sweet!
I like the harleys subtler design, and with the harley you always have the option of a 1200 conversion. I know harleys are outdated in their design but that's part of the reason why I think their cool. Not the chromed out ones with the restrictive fish tail exhaust tips but the more classic looking ones.
I like the looks of the bike but I'd prefer it with less chrome and more black for the forks and cylinder jugs like the original. I also prefer the 53 style headlight.
Harleys aren't outdated, in their design. They stick, to their style, but have had some obvious changes. Also, fishtail pipes are classic pipes. All the stock pipes are restrictive. They're both good bikes and the Sportster does have the 1200 conversion advantage, which I plan, to get done, to mine. The bolt is something I'd consider, for a bike, to buy, but it does seem like the designers were trying to hard, to make it simplified.
AmericanBiker5150 It's a bobber, so yes, simplified. The Sportster is Harley's stylized version of a bobber. And their 45-degree single-crank pin engine is outdated.
What made Harley an icon was that it was cheap and easy to chop / modify when guys were coming back from Nam and getting together to ride stateside. Half (or more) of the bike manufacturers today didn't even exist then, or their products were not available in the US at least. People think Harley is "the shit" just because they don't understand what MADE Harleys what they were, which they no longer ARE. Learn some history of bikes in the late 60's early 70's. Most guys I know who've owned a Harley have cussed them more than they've ridden them because they cost so much and yet spend so much time in the shop. If you wanna ride a Harley, fine, go for it... Just get off your high horses about those of us who ride something else. there is SUPPOSED to be a brotherhood among riders, not just among Harley owners. A nice ride is a nice ride, and the brand name only means something to trendies who wanna show off the size of their wallets.
D. Allen Martin Well said. HD has prestige because they're still in business and Indian, Crocker, Henderson etc. are not. They have always had a slick marketing machine and sold Americans on an image.
James N And you think anyone in the US who rode with club wanted one at that point in time, given the pro-"Made in America" mindset, not to mention foreign relations with Japan? Again, look at the bike designs they were putting out, costs, accessibility of parts, the fact that Metric was EXTREMELY unpopular in those days, and the ease of modification (ability to turn them into decent looking choppers) compared to Harleys in the 60's. Metric bikes today are a lot easier to customize, cheaper, often more reliable, and just as good as a Harley in every way to anyone who doesn't worship the name Harley.
Lot of butt hurt HD owners trying to defend their archaic tractors. So what if someone's made a bike that looks like a sportster, not everyone wants to ride a chrome covered rattling bucket of bolts. May be HD should take the hint and start producing more efficient, more reliable bikes.
Ben 1022 the new fuel injected air cooled 883 and 1200 are extremely reliable. They don’t leak oil, they don’t need valve adjustments. The EFI 883 makes 1 more hp then the bolt and like 20 more hp then this old 01 883, although the bolt makes like 10 more ft lbs of torque then the newer EFI 883’s. Acceleration is identical.
+Richard Luebbe Anyone who says Sportster are girls bikes dont ride or just ride on perfect days or just dont know squat about bikes and their history. Way to show your ignorance. BTW, my Sporty would make your old lady like to like it has training wheels. Then you could tell all your RUB friends how you got beat by a girl.
I did not say sporty are girls bikes I said 883's are and I meant or should have said they do not have the power and vibrate more than a big twin. They are in my opinion not meant for the long ride but they make great 7-11 hoppers for anyone.
Why would you compare a 13 year old carbureted Sportster against a brand new Bolt? If you cant get your hands on an Iron at least find an 883 that is fuel injected. The Bolt will still probably win but at least it would be a legitimate comparison.
I got a yamaha bolt and I eat these sportsters all day long, from a dead stop, or cruising on the freeway. These sportsters are over rated, yamaha has done a way better job on this bike.
+Old Soldier yes, but they are thrilled with little honda's with body kits, and little muffllers that souund like a continuous fart, Faaaarrrrttttt, upshift Faaaarrrtttt, upshift Faaarrrrttttt. LoL
What's the big deal? I bought my 883 because I liked the style more than any other bike. That's my opinion. The bolt looks like an 883 knock off to me. While it's definitely faster, I didn't buy a 600 pound motorcycle to race nor did 99% of riders. And if you did buy a motorcycle for racing, it wouldn't be either of these bikes.
I'm not even a biker (Yet) but I've been sizing these two for the future. It's not just for speed sake. They're both aimed at beginner riders or bikers new to cruisers so the Bolt comes up on top for other reasons. It's lighter with higher ground clearance so will be easier to corner with. The seat is also a little lower which will shift the centre of gravity lower making balancing easier. The belt drive also is a big factor as it requires less maintenance. It's over all much more user friendly than the Harley. The Harley does have the looks and sound though, but functionally the Bolt has it beaten.
MoosicDude I can't argue with any of those facts because I belive you are right as far as specs go. My point was it just comes down to personal preference. While the bolt wasn't out yet when I bought my iron, I still would have made the same choice based on my reasons for buying a motorcycle. And everyone should be able to buy the bike they want without worrying what other people think about it.
I love my 2005 1200 Sportster. Even though its in my garage in pieces. With less than 7 thousand miles on it the engine sprocket nut came loose and ruined the splines on the crank shaft assembly. It will be a very very expensive repair. So much for Harley factory workmanship and factory quality control. You take a chance when you buy a Harley. I'm keeping my Harley but am buying a new Yamaha Bolt in the spring so I have a bike to ride that I can count on. Some day I'll fix my Harley. Maybe.
It’s actually not too bad my brother has an ‘18 Iron 1200 and I have a ‘15 Bolt R-Spec. The only place the difference really shows is on the highway, he has a lot more top end (Obviously) but as for city riding they are pretty evenly matched. We both live in New Orleans and tend to ride through the French Quarter quite a bit and you don’t notice the CC difference all that much until like I said you hit The highways.
My upgraded Sporty is still under the cost of a 1200 and would leave the Bolt standing still. I dont race at all but its nice to have the nuts to go 2 up with all my camping gear in the mountains.
Well that was a terrible comparison. The difference between a 2001 and a 2004-up 883 is worlds apart (very different bikes). I've got an idea, lets race an 82 Mustang (with only 5k on it) against a 2015 Camaro. Sounds fair right?Wonder why they didn't use a comparable bike?
+oldcratch because when you want to copy and cut into a market held by Harley davidson, you will do anything to try and sway buyers. Even unfair comparisons such as this one, the japanese know no shame. The problem with the japanese is they dont recognize a styling that is endless, they constantly change.
Desmo Valve lol. Oh I know, I just felt like pointing out the complete and utter fallacy of this comparison. They try and try, but just don't (and may never) get it.
both are good bikes doesn't matter which one you have i have rode both bikes and owned both i kept the sportster because the bolt had plastic parts all over it but to me they are both equally good choices for riders who prefer smaller cruisers
Both of these bikes are intended as entry/intermediate level cruisers. What is your criteria for a "real" bike? Mine certainly doesn't include the cost.
I remember when they raced the 750 virago against the 883 and the 750 won in every challenge back in the 90s. It was close though. The displacement difference was a lot bigger in favour of the 883 sportster.
Other than fluids and tires my 99' 1200s sportster has 68k miles on it. never been worked on or broken down. You got me! i had to put a headlight bulb in it last year.
That's a fair point. The EFI may make a significant difference. Hopefully someone makes a video comparing the more modern 883 so we can see a fair comparison. Having some professional riders on a track would also be nice.
Of course the Yamaha will win. Its against an 883. I don't know why HD makes it. Put it up with an older 1000 sportster, or even an older 900. I had a 72 1000 sporty that would rip asphalt, and concrete up from the road. The 2004, and up 1200 sportsters will take it too.
The older ironhead 1100 and 1000 sportsters - would have a hard time trying to keep up with one of the 96-up 883's. Just a completely different motor. The issue here is that the test was a NEW bike against a 10+ year older bike. Huge difference in technology and power.
Gotcha. I'll have to try that then. Thanks for the tips! Though while most of it would be DD'ing it, I'm also kind of hoping that if I take a 2 hour trip, I won't want to cut pieces of my body off from vibrations, though, haha. I realize a bike can't be jack of all trades, but basically looking for a good standard with pretty decent cruiser abilities. Something my past sprts bikes lacked, but my old ass Honda is actually pretty good at (think that's the only thing it's good at, lmao).
i have a new 883 two weeks old first bike in 25 years so i'm not quite used to it yet . i ran across a c spec bolt this morning . our race went much differently .
@Vanrocco thanks for your comment. You are one of those that makes sense. But you have to agree, well you don't have to but most HD people are like cult members. I was watching a movie called children of sorrow. Watch that movie and dig where I am coming from. Some people can be talked into anything and if you speak in the right manner you got them hooked.
I just don't understand what the problem is with being "hooked" on a particular brand of anything? Most of us have our favorite sports teams and if we are true fans we don't change our allegiance do we? To me, it's just jealousy plain and simple. For some reason some people just like to rebel against certain brands or the people who support them. I have to say though, it's usually Europeans that like to find fault with American classics. Not sure why, so once again I'll just assume it's jealousy. Here in America most of us have our favorite brand of automobiles, motorcycles, sports teams, beer, tools, ..etc. I guess people in Europe don't understand that way of thinking so they express their displeasure with this in the form of jealousy. ...
Vanrocco66 No jealousy man, it just that the real classics like Indian are forgotten, classics that actually made history, like the story of Burt Munro, or v-twins that this company invented, and they were first in America who made motorcycles. And what does harley have? No one ever could explain me why harley is soooo legendary, but everyone believes in it. It's like Iphone, every one wants it, but it is overpriced, it's performance is not that fantastic, and others may want something else. But it is this guy who bought an Iphone who keeps on telling everyone how he is so special now, that he has got his own Iphone, he clearly got a better deal and the rest have only cheap knock-offs. It makes me hate the guy, who is an arrogant dumb fuck, and the company that made the product, that washed the brains of this guy, now he actually believes in a fairy tale. It's the average user that pisses off. How could I be jealous of harley if I could have bought my own one and be the part of your, akhem, club? Please tell me where the jealousy should be applied, and for what reason.
Vanrocco66 I don't know about jealousy. What is there to be jealous of. Harley's are old technology. Your average HD has less than 65hp, can't stay out of the shop from leaking either oil or transmission fluid, believe me I know this from experience. They pale in comparison performance wise to a lot of other manufacturers. Do they look good? Yes. Perform good? No. Can anyone walk in a buy a Harley? Absolutely. So why would a Raider rider such as myself be jealous? I have ridden softails, road kings, street glides, and the only one I was impressed with performance wise was my bother's softail, and that's only because it's not stock. His softail can keep up with my Raider and that's saying a lot considering my Raider is a 1900cc. Street Glide impressed me with handling and comfort but that's all. I get both of those and more on my Raider. Btw look at my channel to see my Raider and my bother's Softail.
I work at a dealership, it's not like this is the only comparison. Stock EFI 883 dyno compared to the bolt is a good way to see that all around the bolt has the edge. (The 883 has .1 more horse power at a higher rpm the bolt has 4 more foot pounds of torque at a lower rpm) So say what you want but the yamaha bolt truly is more reliable, faster, costs about the same (unless you go for the R-spec, which rides a lot smoother) we also sell harleys. It's just personal preference for some. Others just have to get Harley because of the name. Some can only get financed by Harley (because they take anyone) so again performance, comfort, and reliability goes to yamaha. That's just a fact. No need for argument.
(only rode the bonnie as of now, quite a nice ride). Another thing I've been reading is that HD has had no problem killing performance for aesthetics, so it seems an early 00 or 90's sporty would be best, so I'm def. considering putting the sporty on the back burner until I'm more financially stable. I think right now I just want a bike that's not dogging at low load and leaking oil out of everywhere like my current DD ('85 nighthawk) is. Carb parts are ridiculously hard to find for it :(.
The Bolt is a cool looking bike and I think would be a good option for someone wanting to get into motorcycling. Sure, many comparable bikes are faster. However, none have the fit and finish of a Harley. As others have posted on this video: Let's fast forward two years when both bikes are for sale. The Harley will maintain a great resale value while the Bolt won't be worth even half of it's new sale price.
no, just bigger cylinders and pistons, the biggest to be safe without machining the cases. The nrhsperformance is making the kit. With heads, cams and bigger carb you can past 120rwhp mark.
This vid made me smile, the comments make me laugh. Enjoy your Harleys gentlemen, I'm saving up for my Yamaha. To each their own. The bike I want is ugly as hell, but it looks good to me because it is honest and does what I want it to. Not interested in peg scrapers anymore.
Both the Yamaha Bolt and Harley Davidson 883 cost about the same when purchased new. However, I will go with the Harley Sportster for two main reasons. Better resale value and tons more after-market goodies!
Also, in 10 years the parts will still be available at the local dealer, and they will still repair them. Our local Japanese shops won't touch a bike over 10 years old but local Harley shops will repair 30+ year old bikes.
Yeah, that's something I'd have to figure out..I mean obviously I want a bike that's fun, but this is a commuter, so what I've been thinking is that it may be best to put the sporty on hold for that very reason, and for the time being get a bike that's uneventful. . Also heard that the suspension bottoms out easy on the sporty (and I'm quite heavy) so I'd have to upgrade the shocks, but that seems cheap (at least for rear) . Hopefully I can test drive the others soon!
carlo cimillo i was going to say the same thing, the Harley is an older carbureted model and that Yamaha crap is fuel injected! Plus it has more ccs...stupid comparison.
The new 883 makes 1 more hp then the bolt, but is down like 10 ft lbs of torque. Newer models are very equal in accelerating, although the bolt is still slightly quicker, barely though, not even a bike length difference
yeah it is a bit uneven with the HD running a nice flowing US spec exhaust and inlet while the bolt is running the highly restricted EU exhaust and inlet
Got some links to that info? The shop I work at has more metric bikes in for repair than harley - two to one. Most of the harley's are in for modifications and more chrome dress up not fixes.harley's don't even need valve adjustments. what maintenance are you talking about?
I know which I'd still have, residual values on the bolt are disappointing to say the least, the Harley 883 sportster is merely the canvas on which to start your relationship, the Bolt is what the bolt started out with. Its not about drag racing, its about posing and cruisin, the Bolt is just a box of bolts (see what I did there?) the Harley has a soul dudes and dudettes!
starker1971 I'm pretty sure your experiences with Harley are not unique, it's a similar story with other brands, you just get loads of people that hate success. The Bolt is a good bike, but I wont be slinging my leg over one and you know the sort of people that do, only wish they could have the Harley, because thats where they're going to end up, buying Harley. I know that cuz I was that soldier
Of course it would, but, you know, apples and oranges. The bolt goes for about 8 grand new and so does an 883 sportster which is why the two were compared. The 1200 sportster is a good 2 or 3 grand more than a bolt or 883.
I don't think people get a Sportster to race with. I think people get a Sportster so they don't have to say "hey check out my new Yamaha". That and it's hard to play that 'harley serenade" on the back roads with a Yamaha. If I were going to get a bike to race with it would probably be a.......Harley. They seem to be doing pretty well in the NHRA.
@@lionking5687 yeah people bag harleys, but they had the longest held land speed record ever. They make loud armchairs for sure, but they are the nicest loud armchairs ever built. Also this guy couldn't launch a Harley to save his life, you gotta redline it on launch or you just bog it, strokes too long.
I'm impressed, it took a brand new EFI, OHC 4 valve per cylinder, 950cc 540 lb Yamaha to outrun a 13 year old, Carbed, 2 valve per cylinder in case cams, 883cc, 590lb Sportster..... did the Harley even get to do a burnout?
You would definitely beat a bolt with your fxdb, but the fxdb is about 5 grand more than a bolt. That's not really fair, is it? The 883 and bolt cost about the same new; I think this is the main reason why the two were chosen. Of course you can find a lot of HD models that are more powerful than the bolt, but they will all also be much more expensive.
You guys have to admit this is not a fair race. Even if you don't like Harley, that sportster is not only an 883, (should have been a 1200) but it's over 10 years old. I don't care that it's only got 1000 miles on it. The '14 technology alone is far better then '01. And it still barely beat that bike. I think the race would have been different if you put a '14 1200cc sportster against that brand new bolt. You can't deny that no matter how much you dislike harley
Price and displacement means it oughta be the bolt vs a new 883. 1200? Sure, if the bolt came with yamaha's 1300. Either way it'll be a slow race and this video shouldn't have been posted lol.
Oh, nevermind, I just googled the company and I see what you mean, I see how it's built on them, Gotcha. . As for accel though, you really need to compare it against something in the price range, the bolt can be used, it is here. The bonneville can also be used. If you're interested in the aftermarket, then yeah, probably best to go HD, though when comparing stock-stock, it's hard to justify it.
I would have been interested in a proper VS. Apples to apples. This comparison might actually mean something if you guys had at least used an EFI sportster. That old 883 is 100cc down on the Bolt already what did you expect would happen? Not sure what you think you proved here.
This is an interesting comparison, but nothing more. Cruiser buyers typically aren't interested in performance numbers like 0-60, 1/4 miles times, or top speed. If they were, they'd be shopping another category altogether. I'll keep my Sportster.
Those are nice bikes. Oddly enough I can't find any videos on UA-cam of Victory racing Yamaha. Either way, be it American made or the foreign market Harley is being left behind performance wise. It may be time they stop relying on name brand recognition and start putting some money into their Research and Development department.
Eh, I don't know, I mean I'm in the market for a standard for DD'ing and the sportster comes up quite often in that category where-as the bolt does not. Currently looking at the bonnie, sporty, and the CB1100. So in that standard area, for the time being it'll be stock. Performance to some degree is nice, but yeah, I don't want to sacrifice all the ergo for the performance like with a gixxer. So whatever I go with will likely be stock for a good bit (financially decently tight currently).
I think the Harley street 750 would be a better comparison for the bolt. Makes almost(just short by a few hp and tq) the same power numbers with almost 200cc's LESS displacement.
Just proves how slow Harleys are. The brakes and handling are crap too. If it wasn't for the badge on the tank, no one would buy them. They are ad mans dream though. (And before you ask, I've owned two Harleys, both were crap).
Ok take into account thats an 01 harley the newer fuel injected ones perform way way way better its all in choice you like imports ride an inport doesnt mean one garbage and the other isnt
Pretty much im waiting on my tax return then im picking up a 883iron having a screaming eagle big bore kit that will make it a 1200 and replace the cam aswell as change the tuning of the bike after market pipes few other doodads and its all under warranty and it will eat any import cruiser and pry any stock harley alive you cant build what is basically a weekenders drag bike finance it and have a warranty from any other brand ive checked thats why harley is getting my business
I don't hate Harleys. I just think they are over-rated, over-hyped, not very good motorcycles. And by the way, I'll watch what I like on video, ASSHOLE!
Today we have 2 bikes 13 years apart but still matched haha there's so many things to factor in over the 13 year period between bike building why not get 2 bikes of the same year?
The Yamaha' s the Winner!. No sweat. It's got a slightly bigger engine, so no surprises here. I have an 883 Iron, which I can upgrade to a 1200 (for some extra cash, of course). How easily can I "pump up the jam" on the bolt?
Wow, didn't see that one coming, is there ANYTHING a Harley can do better then any other bike? asides from make copious amounts of noise and shake itself apart while burning oil since new? I think not
It's a 2001 883? There were improvements made in 2004. Either way. I am sure the Bolt is a little quicker than the Sporty. I like the style of both these bikes but I would prefer a XL1200 if I were shopping for something this size.
So the Harley wanna be with EFI was slightly faster then the 13 year old legend. ... Check back with me in 2 years when both are for sale. The Yamaha won't be worth dick while the Harley will still hold value and will sell much faster simply because people want to own a Harley.
Where I am from (Northern Europe) a 2000 year model 1200 sportster is woth less than my bike, which is 1997 and 800 cc, and guess what I chose... My point is that Harley is just a brand that sells and an archaic design that sucks. There is the rest of the world, it's not just your cosy murrica with repair shops on every corner. But sure, you can ride what you want. I'm just saying that you ride on an archaic motorcycle while you could buy better. Also being butthurt because of that is funny from you.
Also funny how across Europe and Russia you can buy a brand new Harley from a Harley Dealership that is not latest year model. Those bikes stack up, I've seen 2002 year models even, people actually know what they want in here, I'm happy to see that not everyone here is consumed by the bad boy image. Which is obviously fake.
My friend, I completely agree about Harley being old technology. For the most part, they have been using the same old technology for 60 years! I also agree there are other manufacturers that offer more up to date engne technology (Victory for example) that make more power. I choose to ride a Harley because of the sound, the way it feels and for the history that goes along with it. I think most HD riders feel that way. As far as the technology, "If it aint broke, don't fix it". With HD you know exactly what you are getting. Like it or not, it's always going to be the same. ... I don't have a "Harley or nothing" attitude but I don't think there is anything else out there like a Harley. .. I'm looking to buy another bike this spring and I am strongly considering buying a Triumph. One of the reasons is because of the history that comes along with the badge on the tank just like it does with Harley. ... It's all good.
I really enjoy eating Pork with my Rice...BTW...I didn't buy my bike to sell it....while your over-polished bike sits in your garage to preserve your low mileage for resale, I am out there piling up all those miles with a big smile on my face...
you change cylinders and pistons for set with bigger bore size. Stroke is same as stock. I said without machining cases (crank cases) not cylinders. You cannot machine the stock cylinders to such a high bore, you have to replace them. Well if you do the work alone then you have to add about 800 USD to 883 iron, which makes the bolt looking very weak. With Bolt you have only one option if you run out of steam, sell it...
What year was the bolt? Although the sporty had less miles, it's 14 years old from when I'm watching the video... I'm trying to be fair, but a dozen years of technology tilts the scales. If ya want to run it against my 2014 breakout let me know... I'll kick your ass... haha
I look at this by Yamaha and it looks like a Harley. As it is said, imitation is the best form of flattery. I think with the Motor Company's 110 year history and the Sportster line of 55+ years, I don't think a drag race in a parking lot proves anything. The Yammy Hoppy has a new engine and the 883 has been around for awhile. My dollar would be spent at a HD dealer before I would spend it on a bike that might not be around in 3 yrs
*confused* . If you're upping displacement by changing the pistons you're stroking it, if you're opening up the cylinders more you're machining/boring it (but you said without machining it). Though at the time you're doing all of that that's a pretty built motor. I think it's probably more fair to compare stock to stock -_-.
+Reggie Jefferson You idiot, dont you know anything about engine technology? its like comparing a computer built in 2003 to todays laptops. Damm you dumb.
when stroking a motor your changing rod and crankshaft length and geometry. a 883 sportster motor is the same rod and crank as the 1200. just swapping in the pistons and jugs from a 1200 give u a factory stock 1200 cc displacement.
I don't know about this video, why don't we get an 883 that was built the same year as that bolt? That HD is carb'd, and the bolt is most likely efi. This...was not a good match at all.
Although very nice looking, lets see if the Bolt will be around for as long as the Sportster has been. By todays standard, I think the Sportster would make a great beginner bike for some people. The Sportster is made to be affordable. With that said, I think the Sportster makes it possible for many people who otherwise wouldn't buy a Harley because of price to now actually be able to afford one. My wife has one. It was what she wanted to spend to get herself on a Harley.
I feel it was a good comparison. I prefer carb over efi. I've owned sporties and now have an 08 Dyna I bought new. Have to say rather have the Bolt than any of the new overpriced motor company lineup. And thats coming from a Harley owner.
Some of the comments here are just delusionary. My two favorites? "Put that Yamaha up against a Buell XB9." Put that Buell up against a Hayabusa, what's your point? "The Sportster was never meant for speed.:" So when the Sporty debuted in the 50s it was never meant to compete against the faster Brit bikes?
@ ritchiegunn What I was trying to get across is that the Bolt has a Displacement:of 942 cc compared to the Harley's 883cc.The Buell xb9sx 984cc would have been a closer comparison
Ahyyy! como son mamones! la sportster no es para correr, a vista es mas bonita y montandola es de agradable sensacion, por otra parte en un año la H.D. valdra igual o mas y la Bolt?.... al fierro viejo!!
Tex,...all I'm saying is the Sportster has pedigree and lineage. I tried to be sarcastic about it. I'm 60 yrs.old. I have been in love with H-D since I was 5. I have never ridden any other Make. I am going to look at the new Indian's,...and I do like the Victory's also. Take notice, you never see the Motor Co. knock any other Manufacturer in their ads or vids. That speaks volumes to me. Ride Safe Bro !
Not a comparison. A computer controlled ignition with efi vs a carb and a coil on a heavier bike. Might as well compare a Corvette to an F100 cause they both have a V8. I love my Honda, but more often than not, I ride my Harley.
ThePazmeister99 I'm right there with ya. I currently ride a 2009 Daytona 675. Next year I'm picking up a Bolt for longer group rides and road trips. I have no illusions it will be much slower than my D675, but that's kinda the point -- a nice slow cruise. When I first started looking for cruisers it always cracked me up when the Harley dealers would talk to me about power like somehow I wasn't going to be able to handle it or it was going to shock a guy that virtually daily-rides a bike with the same power-to-weight as a Lamborghini Gallardo. Enjoy your ride, whatever you ride.
+Tom B LoL Tom your just as bad as the guy doing this useless comparison, here again your comparing apples to oranges, yes, the V-rod is the fastest Production Harley, but even my aging 95 ducati 900 could smoke one, and any stock triumph 675 could smoke my aging ducati 900. so why even make such a meaningless comment? Hear is an example of your dumb comment. "Hey dudes my 69 chevelle SS smoked that semi trailer truck." Stop showing your ignorance.
These comments are pathetic. Theyre bikes people. This isnt politics! Buy and ride what you like.
Only sensible comments I've seen in this entire section.
Yep, well said.
Well at least when the harley's not in the shop. Lol
I just test rode the Bolt today and loved it! Lightweight, low seat height and well balanced. I took it right up to the Interstate and even without a windshield, it was a dream at 70 mph. Shifts smoothly with plenty of power and very little vibration. Sweet!
do you touch left cylinder with your leg/knee like this guy at the beginning of this video?? seems like you can burn your leg .....
@@Voltomess Yeah you have to watch out for that, you'll start to feel the heat and notice you're burning yourself if you don't spread your legs
Harley Davidson is the Apple inc. of motorcycles. Enjoy your brand name.
+papersplease Do you even ride?
steher i ride man, an he is right just suck it
You ride a gay ass Honda Nighthawk. What did you pay for that, $500 for that turd?
And Yamaha is Samsung 🤣. Samsung is #1 in rank world
@@markrxz samsung is only #1 due to the best phones being banned in the west
The bolt is something I'd consider, for a bike, to buy, but it does seem like the designers were trying to hard, to make it simplified.
wolfattack402000 $20K bike vs a $8k one. yea, smart. lol
AmericanBiker5150 It's a bobber, so yes, simplified. The Sportster is Harley's stylized version of a bobber. And their 45-degree single-crank pin engine is outdated.
The Bolt has virtually ZERO resale value; just like the Kawasaki Vulcan and the Suzuki C 50.
That Yamaha gets on it but I still love my 883
What made Harley an icon was that it was cheap and easy to chop / modify when guys were coming back from Nam and getting together to ride stateside.
Not nam..it was world war 2
D. Allen Martin Honda and Yamaha have both been in the US since the late 50's.
D. Allen Martin I was pointing out a fact they've been in the United States that long, not who rode what and not their popularity or design.
The Bolt is no doubt faster but the Harley rider looked better getting there Thanks for the Video
+Richard Luebbe that 883 is a girls bike!!!! ha ha
I ride an Ultra Classic myself and I do agree that the883 is a girls bike a sportster 1200 is much faster but no bigger in size
Richard Luebbe i think the frame on the 883 and 1200 are the same size..
+Richard Turner , That Sportster 883 is like my bike. Its a wonder if the carb is fouled from just sitting, 1,000 isn't even broken in yet.
Love the 'RESLUT' every run!
I got a yamaha bolt and I eat these sportsters all day long, from a dead stop, or cruising on the freeway. These sportsters are over rated, yamaha has done a way better job on this bike.
Wait till you get a sportser 1200
Yes High School and College students will be thrilled about the new Bolt
And everyone should be able to buy the bike they want without worrying what other people think about it.
moosiedude.
the iron is also belt driven...at least my 2016 iron.
Maybe.
7K miles... how sad is that?
I think people are missing the point of a Harley - it doesn't matter how long it takes to get there, as long as you look good doing it.
Right and sound good too.
Sir Didymus just like life...
Sir Didymus yup and alive
I can explain Harley and its riders up in one word " vain "
You sound like you need attention
I wonder how it would hold up against the 1200 sporty
Not well. A 900, 1000, or1200 would all smoke him.
@@1BillyBlade if you say so
It’s actually not too bad my brother has an ‘18 Iron 1200 and I have a ‘15 Bolt R-Spec.
Still rather have the Harley. Each to their own though
Nice old Sportster 883. What's that other bike???
both are good bikes doesn't matter which one you have i have rode both bikes and owned both i kept the sportster because the bolt had plastic parts all over it but to me they are both equally good choices for riders who prefer smaller cruisers
Good to see you guys switch rides. That's the only way to compare machines, by eliminating the rider factor.
Agreed HD for aestethic value.
Always liked my Yamaha's and I've had a few but I'll be keeping my Super Glide I reckon. It's a steam engine and I love it :-)
no, just bigger cylinders and pistons, the biggest to be safe without machining the cases.
Yeah, that's something I'd have to figure out..I mean obviously I want a bike that's fun, but this is a commuter, so what I've been thinking is that it may be best to put the sporty on hold for that very reason, and for the time being get a bike that's uneventful.
.
Also heard that the suspension bottoms out easy on the sporty (and I'm quite heavy) so I'd have to upgrade the shocks, but that seems cheap (at least for rear)
.
Hopefully I can test drive the others soon!
That's not even one of the F.I. sportsters.....I'm not a harley guy, but this doesn't seem even remotely even...smh
carlo cimillo i was going to say the same thing, the Harley is an older carbureted model and that Yamaha crap is fuel injected!
Why would you put a Harley up against rice? Rice always wins. Stock Harleys just aren't built for light speed.
Got some links to that info? The shop I work at has more metric bikes in for repair than harley - two to one. Most of the harley's are in for modifications and more chrome dress up not fixes.harley's don't even need valve adjustments. what maintenance are you talking about?
I have a Softail Breakout, you will love it. It's definitely different than the rest.
Is having ridiculous crankshaft run-out the same as having a soul ??
starker1971 I'm pretty sure your experiences with Harley are not unique, it's a similar story with other brands, you just get loads of people that hate success.
The 1200 sportster is a good 2 or 3 grand more than a bolt or 883.
just checked the bolts stock hp. 47 are we going to drag mopeds next
Jefferson Smith yep.. Vance and Hines been killing it for decades on Harleys
In 2007 they updated cam's , went to fule injection
Higher suspension? Thought the XL was extra low and part of their whole "chopper out of the box" style movement?
A better comparison would be to use the 2013 harley iron. Although the stock iron is pretty slow still I stuck 1200 kit on mine now it flys :)
you're right. they should have raced two 2001 harley sportsters against each other. then it would be fair.
Its clear which one looks better, The original of course.
Shit, even the 2014 iron 883.
Price and displacement means it oughta be the bolt vs a new 883. 1200? Sure, if the bolt came with yamaha's 1300. Either way it'll be a slow race and this video shouldn't have been posted lol.
finally somebody brought that up.
I own two harleys and a triumph. I am really curious about the bolt. Wanna check one out
Just proves how slow Harleys are.
Who the fuck cares ???
Other people are happy with them so stop fucking hating
I'm British and I ride a superior bike to any Harley - It's called a Triumph.
PS Have you thought about an anger management course?.
I don't hate Harleys. I just think they are over-rated, over-hyped, not very good motorcycles. And by the way, I'll watch what I like on video,
ASSHOLE!
Today we have 2 bikes 13 years apart but still matched haha there's so many things to factor in over the 13 year period between bike building why not get 2 bikes of the same year?
I have the eagle 1200 kit, N-4 cams, 883 gears, dyno tuned CV 40mm, and a Thunderheader.
The Yamaha' s the Winner!. No sweat.
It's got a slightly bigger engine, so no surprises here.
I have an 883 Iron, which I can upgrade to a 1200 (for some extra cash, of course).
How easily can I "pump up the jam" on the bolt?
What makes you think racing a 2001 bike vs a 2013 is an equal match???
Wow, didn't see that one coming, is there ANYTHING a Harley can do better then any other bike? asides from make copious amounts of noise and shake itself apart while burning oil since new? I think not
Harley Davidson vs Yamaha is like Elvis vs karate kid
It's a 2001 883?
There were improvements made in 2004.
Either way. I am sure the Bolt is a little quicker than the Sporty.
I like the style of both these bikes but I would prefer a XL1200 if I were shopping for something this size.
So the Harley wanna be with EFI was slightly faster then the 13 year old legend. ... Check back with me in 2 years when both are for sale. The Yamaha won't be worth dick while the Harley will still hold value and will sell much faster simply because people want to own a Harley.
Yeah, .. OKay. You should buy one then. .. and when you decide to sell it or trade it in, let me know how that goes. .. Good luck. ..
I don't see the Bolt with it's own class in the AMA, but the sportster sure has one.
What year was the bolt? Although the sporty had less miles, it's 14 years old from when I'm watching the video... I'm trying to be fair, but a dozen years of technology tilts the scales. If ya want to run it against my 2014 breakout let me know... I'll kick your ass... haha
and 77 more cc of output power...
JACKSONLEWISOFCANADA Both great biles but there is no replacement for displacement. Technology aside. 48 vs. a Bolt? Lets see what happens then.
Bolt keep up w/ a 1200 Sporty?
what kind of windshield is on that bolt?
I look at this by Yamaha and it looks like a Harley. As it is said, imitation is the best form of flattery. I think with the Motor Company's 110 year history and the Sportster line of 55+ years, I don't think a drag race in a parking lot proves anything. The Yammy Hoppy has a new engine and the 883 has been around for awhile. My dollar would be spent at a HD dealer before I would spend it on a bike that might not be around in 3 yrs
*confused*
.
If you're upping displacement by changing the pistons you're stroking it, if you're opening up the cylinders more you're machining/boring it (but you said without machining it). Though at the time you're doing all of that that's a pretty built motor. I think it's probably more fair to compare stock to stock -_-.
What, is the new 883 more powerful? It's probably more emissions restricted than the old one.
does the bolt have a 1250cc kit? I think not (drops mic)
+Reggie Jefferson You idiot, dont you know anything about engine technology? its like comparing a computer built in 2003 to todays laptops. Damm you dumb.
What the hell are you even trying to say lol
How about you get the same year of the two then see which is better...
when stroking a motor your changing rod and crankshaft length and geometry. a 883 sportster motor is the same rod and crank as the 1200. just swapping in the pistons and jugs from a 1200 give u a factory stock 1200 cc displacement.
1250? What's that? 1200 + stroker kit?
love too see someone run across me on my harley 48 that bolt looks quick
Excelent race good video thks
Have to say rather have the Bolt than any of the new overpriced
motor company lineup. And thats coming from a Harley owner.
The Sportster has what..67 fewer cc than the Bolt? I'm not entirely sure if this matters in a Cruiser race, but anyway.
Any comparo with burnouts is a winner in my book. Im sold on the Bolt!
I just got my R-Spec today, he's a sweet boy to ride
do you touch left cylinder with your leg/knee like this guy at the beginning of this video?? seems like you can burn your leg .....
Some of the comments here are just delusionary. My two favorites?
"Put that Yamaha up against a Buell XB9."
Put that Buell up against a Hayabusa, what's your point?
"The Sportster was never meant for speed.:"
So when the Sporty debuted in the 50s it was never meant to compete against the faster Brit bikes?
***** what kind of windshield is on that bolt?
Not a comparison. A computer controlled ignition with efi vs a carb and a coil on a heavier bike. Might as well compare a Corvette to an F100 cause they both have a V8. I love my Honda, but more often than not, I ride my Harley.
allot of butthurt harley fans here...but honeslty has anyone ever bought a harley for its 1/4 mile time ? if you want speed you buy a super sport
Tom B same here man, bolt for something a little more comfy R1 for when i feel like breaking the sound barrier haha
Or a Harley Davidson v rod
+James Campbell you've never ridden a sport bike. V-Rods are not fast. Left one in the dust on my 675 on a back road.
"Hey dudes my 69 chevelle SS smoked that semi trailer truck." Stop showing your ignorance.
compare bikes of the same year, for the test to be valid.
It is the least that can be demanded.
HHUGGER my 15 year old Honda has more horsepower than any Harley. It also turns and stops. I also don't need attention drawn to me
Harley changed thier game in the mid 90`s. 100K miles on a HD is common now. Oil changes and tires. I can`t say that for anything metric.
