    PETA, the page you showed as an example is absolutely beautiful. I love how you did the background. You are so talented and amazing at what you do. I would love to see a tutorial on how you do backgrounds. Thank you also for the review on the new set of Derwents.

    I got these from Dick Blick for $119 USD. I totally agree with Peta's review. They are soft, but not as soft as Prismacolor Premier. I also have Polychromous, and I like these almost as well. (I'm not an artist, just a beginning colorist who truly loves pencils that come in many, many colors.)

    • @macrinagreen2114
      @macrinagreen2114 6 років тому

      Hi bluebell skye, have you found a pencil you really like? If not, I recommend Derwent Coloursoft. I have arthritis, too, and had a hard time finding the right thing, so I bought lots of open stock pencils to try out. My dream would be Caran d'Ache Luminance, but that's out of my price range. A close third is Prismacolor Premier. I'm always interested to hear what works for other people with arthritis.

    I have the Prismacolors and some Polychromos... I love the Prismacolors so much, but I hate to constantly sharpen them. The Polychromos keep their point, but I don’t like how they blend and the colors are not as vibrant. Blend the Procolours like the Prismas or more like the Polys? I am struggling with the decision what I want to buy...

    Thank you for the info. You colored a beautiful first picture with these pencils! I know you referred to the darker green in the background as "bottle green," but that isn't the technical name. Might you recall the green you used? Maybe cedar or racing green? It just looks so unique, so I'm curious. Thanks!

      You are correct! I am used to calling that shade bottle green as a similar colour by that name is part of my Derwent Artist set that I love. the correct name for this colour in the Procolour series is Racing Green.

      HI Jenny. Rats are great little people. Unfortunatley we lost one of our dear ratties a few weeks ago. Akio (the black hooded downunder) died in my hands after fitting in her cage. She was only a few weeks off two years old. We buried her with a miniature rose planted over her grave. The first roses are just starting to bloom. Emi has fully recovered from her surgery to remove a tumour. We are doing everything to make sure she doesn't get lonely. As for coloursoft... i only own about a dozen of those so I can't tell you for sure.

    Those pencils look to be awesome but honestly I think they're too expensive for coloring books. I'm a coloring fan, but I wouldn't spend 200€ for that set, unless I'd sell works. But lucky who can buy them just for fun. Personal opinion with no polemical intention.

    Hello again Peta.
    I wanted to mention to you that through the process of coloring my book, in the all-book challenge, I had decided that I was going to use pencils on all of the pages as I colored the first page in pencil for a review. I had also decided that I was going to try for color intensity. My meaning that I was going for full burnishing on most of the page. I discovered that through this process, I'm on page 10 of 24, I am enjoying a medium hardness in the cores. I prefer the feel of oil based pencils best. Prismacolors are FAR too soft and smear too easily. I know that you really love your Polychromos pencils. Would you say that they might be one to try, with my pencil taste? I know that they are VERY expensive. They are less than Holbeins. (They were listed for $575 USD).
    I've got 15 pages to go, so I had better get back to it.
    I love what you do. Your instincts are incredible. Your videos are just the most calming and relaxing to watch. I believe that your voice is a HUGE factor in that.
    Thank you.
    Thank,
    Mindy

    • @NoDontLikeIt
      @NoDontLikeIt 6 років тому

      Mindy Lafler I'm not sure what pencils you were quoting for the price? Just now, for a set of 150 Holbein is about $300 (all US prices), the procolor are $109 for 72, and polychromos are $159 for 120. It's really hard for anyone to recommend pencils for you, was we all have such differing opinions on what we like in pencils. If you're wanting to know about polychromos, may I suggest you go to an art store or an online store like dick blick and buy a few open stock to try? That way, if you don't like them, you're not out a lot of money.

  • @bostonblackie9503
    @bostonblackie9503 4 роки тому

    Derwent pencils I find to be very expensive in Canada. Prismacolor has the market in North America 150 pencils for $130 CAN. I personally think a 72 pensil set is enough for anybody. Derwent's come in 72 pencils, but at the cost of over $150. The Procolour cost is at least over $160, the Artists and Coloursoft are a small bit under. I like my PC but was looking for something a bit harder that I could control better, so I know these prices and know I would go for the Procolour since I don't know the hardness of Artists pencils. I like Verithin the control and hardness, but they are not a universal pencil, having a specific purpose they do very well, they are not bendable. Derwent really is pricing themselves out of the NA market, not that they were in. They have no begginer or intermediate pencils, never mind having some and pricing them appropriatly. Right now in Canada the 'Black Widow' pencils seem to fill the begginer to intermediate range at an affordable cost.

      Doreen Dee haha, there's not much difference in price between polychromos and these procolor. Remember, Peta's in Australia, its more expensive there. Also, the prices for the procolor have come down-only $109 US for the 72 at present and $159 US for 120 polychromos so not really that much difference.

      Iaven't as yet. Though i love those pencils. They were my original Artist quality pencils given to me by my husband (you and me both share great taste in men!) 29 years ago. The reason I haven't done a tutorial is because most people don't own a set. And those who use Prismacolor don't like them because they consider them to be too hard. I would like to do one one day.

And very fortunately here in the US My favorite online art supplies store dickblick.com has them open stock, so I can get just the colors I want to augment my Polychromos and Prismacolor colored pencil collection. I don't want all of the colors, just about 30 or so. And am really excited to get my hands on them. Especially those pale colors, oooh my goodness. I love how those look on the paper. Inktense is completely different in how you use it from normal coloured pencils or even watercolour pencils. To me one is not better than the other. My favourite colour pencil type is still Polychromos. Inktense is more like painting then colouring with pencils so I'm afraid I can't compare them.

    unfortunately they have changed the composition of the derwent artists...I have a 30year old set and it has nothing to do with the modern ones. The older ones were much much softer, pigmented creamy and opaque...the derwent procolour are much less of all the things mentionned above compared to the old artists

    I purchased these pencils, I was very disappointed with these pencils. I find that the feel of them are hard and not smooth. I have Polychromos and I would not put these pencils in the same sentence with Polychromos. I have stopped buying Derwent as I find their pencils are poor quality especially these pencils. I talked to someone in a store in the UK from Canada and they have said that they have had a mixed feedback. I know this is my opinion and you can try them for your self-make sure you can return them.

    my opinion is unless you are a very experienced coloerer there is no point in buying expensive pencils.
    get a 5 dollar set of 72 and learn how to color then in a few years if you still color you will want better pencils.
    there are people here doing amazing coloring with very very cheap pencils
