    What I learnt from many reviews,
    First three wax based pencils;
    Colorsoft - very creamy and soft, handle with care or you will keep breaking the leads
    Procolor - medium hardness. Gives creamy texture and can layer but both not as well as colorsoft and artist
    Artists - very hard, useful in drawing hard lines and layering.
    Studio - same as artist but round pencil and not hexagonal
    Now for the only oil based and most expensive pencil of Derwent brand - lightfast.
    Faber Castell polychromous - high quality oil based
    Kohinoor polycolor - wax based.
    Prismacolour - somewhere in between coloursoft and procolor in hardness

    Thank you for this, just what I wanted to know. Everyone else is busy comparing different brands while you do something useful like comparing within a brand. Thirty years ago, I had the full set of Derwent Artists and I’ve one stubby little pencil left. My budget won’t stretch to replacing them, and thanks to you, I now know that I’d probably be happy to settle for the much more affordable Procolour. Namaste

    One question, the pencils of the Derwent are so good? In Brazil it's easy find the pencils of brand, but is very popular the Polychromos and Koh I noor, what are recommend for me? I like soft pencil and quite pigment as coloursoft and prisma.

    The paper you used annoys me a little. Maybe if you used a rougher surface, the mineral spirit would spread the color more accurately. Personally, I'm not into m. spirit very much, but I hate those satin papers to work on or to test anything well.

    In conclusion derwent soft colors are better! And Prisma colors is the 2nd choice. Jason, I have a Derwent drawing color set of 12, and it's so soft! And the colors are so beautiful! and blend with solvent, tortillions, and a Q-tips too. The range of color is only 24, but you can mix it each other. 🥰🥰🥰 it's great for drawing wild animals, landscape and portrait too.❤🥰

    Thanks for this video!
    I've had the wooden box of 72 Coloursoft for several years now. And although I like the colors and the pencils feel nice in the hand, I do get annoyed by the 'crumbs' of the pencil (I keep blowing them away) and the breaking of the sharp point when you want to color in small things.
    So I was looking for a harder pencil, which doesn't crumble so much and can take some pressure without breaking. And above all: from which I will not go bankrupt 😂
    At first I wanted the 120 Polychromos (we have the set of 12, we have the set of 12, but that's not enough 😉), but they are actually a bit over my budget, then a friend (who has Coloursoft, Procolour, Chromaflow, Polychromos, Prismacolor and Luminance on its way for her birthday) recommended the Procolour to me, so I went looking for videos comparing the Coloursoft and Procolour. So glad I came across this.
    Unfortunately, there is no shop in the area where I can buy a number of them, so I have to spend at least 45 minutes in the car, but it's almost summervacation, so I'm planning a 'buy some pencils trip' 😎

    • @Cindy-6791
      @Cindy-6791 Рік тому

      Oh, I also find the 'waxbloom' very annoying with the Coloursoft, so maybe Polychromos is better for me after all.
      So for now I'm still not sure haha!

    Great review! I would love to know how they work on pastel mat? I have seen many colored pencil artists trying out that paper, and they can layer light over darks, like pastel or oil. I would love to know if this is true. Thank you!

    • @wildlifeartjm
      @wildlifeartjm 7 років тому +2

      on pastelmat paper you can overlay light over dark to some extent with coloured pencils. much more than you can with standard paper, but nowhere near as much as you can with pastels. Using pastelmat with coloured pencil is like midway between normal pencil on paper and pastels.

    I don´t know if the bristol board was a good choice for testing coloured pencils. Maybe a paper with a bit tooth would have been a better choice. For that what I saw I wouldn´t buy the Procolour. I wouldn´t buy none of these pencils... I am not sure if I understand this correct... the Procolour are wax-based pencils? They look as poor as the Spectrum Noir pencils...very hard and without much pigment in them. Do you know if there will be an open stock? Maybe I will purchase one or two pencils for a comparision with my Polychromos and Luminance. But to be honest I am not convinced.

    Good review! Derwent is confusing me on this one, though, Something called Procolour should be a professional grade product, right? But I would expect a pro product to be oil based and very lightfast. I might pick up a few of these in my favorite colors to try out, but can't see how they would figure in when doing commissioned work. Kind of a bummer if you ask me. Still, good job on this review. I always learn something from your videos!

    • @DeniseJHowardArt
      @DeniseJHowardArt 7 років тому +5

      Lily, why would you expect a pro product to be oil-based? Caran d'Ache Luminance and Pablo are both professional quality and they are both wax-based.

    • @SmillyDonut
      @SmillyDonut 7 років тому +1

      Actually the Pablo's are their oil-based line and the Luminance are their wax-based line. Perhaps you meant the Faber-Castell Polychromos being oil-based, though Prismacolours are also wax-based.

    • @lilymanson4896
      @lilymanson4896 7 років тому +2

      I could have worded that better. I meant that since they already had Coloursoft and Derwent Artists', both waxed based, I expected them to add an oil-based colored pencil range with the Procolour.

    • @DeniseJHowardArt
      @DeniseJHowardArt 7 років тому

      Actually the Pablos are *not* oil-based. For a long time I thought they were, too. But a few weeks ago I directly asked Stefan Lohrer of Creative Art Materials, the North American importer/distributor for Caran d'Ache. He's a walking encyclopedia of all Caran d'Ache products. He said they are wax-based.

    I have never experienced more extreme hand fatigue from a pencil than from the Derwent Procolour. I have used a huge variety of pencils thru the years and was so disappointed in how they applied pigment. I would never buy a set of them.

  • @jennyannart
    @jennyannart 6 років тому

    Only about half to 2/3s are lightfast so for a set of high quality professional artist pencil they're not as good as one would expect especially for the price I paid almost $200AU. Nevertheless the set could be used along with another brand that is lightfast. For commission work a combined selection of pencils would create an archival piece if work other than that as a set on their own art could be sold as prints. I am looking forward to trying mine out I hear the procolour performance is high standard so at least that's something

  • @WildPortraitArtist
    @WildPortraitArtist 7 років тому +16

    Can't say I agree at all with your inclination that the lightfastness ratings of Coloursoft are "good" - 13 colours of the set are not lightfast, making up over a fifth of the set! Compare that to brands like Faber Castell Polychromos (only 2 non-lightfast colours) and Caran D'ache Luminance (all fully lightfast) and it's very clear which brands are superior.
    In all honesty, the fact that Derwent are being so tight-mouthed about the lightfastness of the Procolours does not bode well in my opinion and it's unlikely the set is going to have good lightfastness overall. As someone who is primarily a coloured pencil artist I expect a brand that is marketed as "professional artist quality" to be just that - and good lightfastness is an absolute must for this definition. I'm a little concerned about the quality of these but I want so badly for them to be good. I guess only time will tell and I won't know until I actually get my hands on them when they're released. Fingers crossed.

    • @amywebb9311
      @amywebb9311 7 років тому +1

      Totally agree with you. As they are "artist grade pencils" they should be lightfast. They must be aware that us professional artists sell our work and therefore need it to stand the test of time. I'm really disappointed in this set. The colours look really dull to me. I won't be buying.

    • @eienbeau
      @eienbeau 7 років тому +1

      True. I feel that Derwent is quite shady when it comes to lightfast rating of their pencils. Like Inktense, they are lightfast when used dry, but when they are wet, they are not lightfast.

    • @amywebb9311
      @amywebb9311 7 років тому +2

      I agree. I wouldn't direct/advertise any non-lightfast coloured pencils towards professional artists. I've just purchased some inktense (12 set) and am having loads of fun with them but I wouldn't use them on any commissions or any artwork intended for sale because of them being non-lightfast once wet, which I think is the fun in inktense. The price Jason quoted (I know it's subject to change) just doesn't reflect the quality of the pencils. When you think you can buy 120 Polychromos for a comparable price it makes more sense to go for those that have a better lightfast rating. I'd expect more from a "professional" grade coloured pencil.

    The official Derwent Colour chart indicates about half of the colours in the Procolour range fall below the acceptable lightfastness grades (i.e. 1-3). A 'proper' professional range would be lightfast across the entire range - which can be achieved (and has been in the past by Derwent!). This range actually appear to be worse than Coloursoft! I don't think I'd comment on lightfastness in a video without knowing what is first - although Jason's expectations appear to be the same as everybody else's - which I assume means he is now as disappointed as the rest of us! I have to say that the name seems to be a complete misnomer!
