Lol
I know, right? They should put Weezer in charge of all of the UA-cam Rewinds.
At the time this was new people might've thought it was cringe, but these days I find it incredibly nostalgic and even kind of touching. This is the *real* UA-cam Rewind special.
YESSSSS!!!!!!
I remember the DAY this video came out! It was actually a major hit and the views blew up like no other video I had seen. One of the first 'viral' music videos. I was 14 years old and now I'm 27. Nobody I knew thought it was cringe back then, most of my friends found it awesome, especially the friends who enjoyed youtube with me. We'd watch on our parent's laptops. People in these comments claim they thought it was lame and played out back then, but I don't personally know anyone who felt that way. I downloaded the song off limewire and put it on my ipod shuffle the next day for school XD
@Kuudere Kitten That’s actually a really awesome story. Thx for sharing, my dude!
@@kuuderekitten5201 exactly, man! I’m the same age as you and everyone I know loved this video from people my age to people a lot older than me. You really only had to have cursory knowledge about the memes to enjoy it.
They sing this during their Indie Rock Roadtrip tour, I saw them Tues in Irving and last night in OKC. This song was amazing live ❤
Golden Age of UA-cam, no ads, no algorithm, not owned by a corporation, you could upload whatever you found funny. That was it.
Yes the old good days, now some videos are deleted for dumb reasons
ads were put on youtube in 2007, there has always been an algorithm, and google bought youtube in 2006. This song was made in 2009
@@Code_EJ less ads, algorithm didn't fuck people over as badly, it at least *felt* more community run than now
sad how so many people won't see this internet and think the over monetization and politics is normal
almost feels like prophecy with the lyrics, back when people didn't care about what others thought more often and minded their own business
it was owned by a corporation, just not one worth billions
The fact that they were able to get so many people to showcase the golden age of UA-cam is still amazing.
I love miss Carolina in there. Genius.

It legitimately is.
Truly
This is like the first and only Meme vid ever lol
Watching this again after many years, for some reason I completely broke down in tears. What a time capsule into my formative years on the internet. I don’t know if it’s a lament of the lost boundless optimism of that era or just nostalgia, but damn. I wept for something lost, for the memories. Feels good to cry but what an interesting catalyst. It’s a masterpiece.
it's like a time capsule
Definitely hits emotional for me too. Those days of UA-cam where the "You" actually meant it. Of course there are still examples of that today, but damn was it more pure in those days. People posted themselves in a much more unfiltered light. It was raw, amateur and ugly. It's hard to describe, but this song captures something beyond nostalgia for me. It hits different than it did 13 years ago.
I'm with you man, I always loved this video/song but I went back to watch it because the "Maps" beauty queen was used in a meme and no one recognized her. I don't blame you for being emotional because imo this era for youtube was peak fun and goofy, it's not like that anymore. Cyberbullying was never okay but having a laugh is fine and all these people were having a laugh about themselves. I wish I could find the original filming of it, it was great.
Me because of the spiritual message it had for me in it
Shhhhhhhhh rude. Not trying to cry again. 😝❤
This aged incredibly well
@LegoGuy87 Its more than about what memes it used, it's about how it's from a time period when being a UA-camr wasn't cool or a career or anything like that. Back in the day, these were the inside jokes of an underdog subculture, and that lends credibility to both the music video and the song's defiant lyrics. Who better to illustrate 'doing the things you wanna do' than people who bared themselves on the internet, often got made fun of or marginalized, and then subsequently became part of the DNA of internet culture? The video content matches the music in a way that's extremely rare.
It's the best youtube rewind.
@@ungovernableevilmonger4660 Especially since this was the video that inspired the entire rewind concept. This is a historical record of internet culture in its infancy.
Internet culture had existed loooong before this video but it’s an accurate reflection on the infancy of widespread video culture.
@@mirsolis4992 Of course it did, but it was very fragmented. Tons of subcultures that existed all over the internet with overlapping sectors like a Venn Diagram. I kind of think of that as Internet culture's infancy. From around 2000 onward internet culture started to form a more coherent and unified identity. Still with uncountable subcultures but held together now with a social aspect overtop it all.
This video has memes in it like NumaNuma which started on Newgrounds in 2004, Peanut Butter Jelly Time started around 2002, and All Your Base has been kicking around since around 1998. So while this video is the first re-wind and a time capsule of early UA-cam culture it's all also a record of early internet culture.

A lot of people point to the Africa cover as Weezer solidifying themselves in the pop-culture ethos, but I think this is where Weezer won over a massive amount of fans and gained a lot of good will on the internet, which has kept them relevant even as a lot of the band members are entering their mid-50s. This is when UA-cam was still a relatively small and connected platform and was more about making personal and offbeat content over drama videos and high budgeted stuff. Mathew Cullen who directed the video completely understood that Rivers lyrics relate to that kind of crowd and melded them together perfectly. It's such a great love letter to that era and it's one of the major factors that has kept them relevant. The feeling of that outsiderness distilled into a catchy pop song and an awesome video.

No matter how many times I watch this video it puts a smile on my face. I don't know every single reference they make but I know most of them, and it just touches me how they managed to put a time capsule on such a short-lived period. Things move so fast, technology advances so quickly, trends and pop culture change almost as soon as they're created; but it hasn't always been like this, and this video showcases a time when we were kind of right on the border between eras. Or maybe I'm just overly nostalgic because this video is about viral videos from when I was in middle school, and everything looks different in a preteen's memory, but I don't know. Things don't feel the same now as they did then, and I'm just grateful to Weezer for making this video happen, and to all these people for agreeing to be in it and to play up the things that made them go viral, even in the cases where it was stuff that got them massively bullied.

This is like opening a time capsule
Woah, I remember watching this absolute masterpiece back in secondary school in IT class. It was to demonstrate key editing techniques (Or something similar.) & the entire class got a kick out of watching it. Sure, it's the pinnacle of internet popular culture/memes at the time, but also a landmark in UA-cam content creator collaborations. Very enjoyable stuff!
Man that hug for Chris Crocker.. he was relentlessly bullied for that video.
It's weird - when this video first came out I remember rolling my eyes because it just felt like it was cashing in on a bunch of viral trends at the time. It wasn't that cool to see Tay Zonday show up because it felt like it had just happened. Leave Britney Alone and K-Fed were annoying videos that I was happy to see finally die out and suddenly here they were, annoying me again.
Watching it now over a decade later, this video hits different. What felt at the time like a lame attempt to be internet-cool is now a nostalgic time capsule that brings me back to better times. I appreciate it in a way that I didn't at the time. Plus it's a pretty great song too.
I think they matched song to subject matter perfectly too. A lot of viral hits and internet culture back then was almost anti-cool. A lot of it was the equivalent of singing in the shower that everyone sees and tells you to keep singing.
Same thing with the Meme Quartet video, though both are just as good as it is corny though...
I was going to post something like this but you said it perfectly.
So you watched it then and now? Sounds like it really annoyed you that you see it, and instead of moving on, you keep watching it.
