What a difference in my nails when I let the gel do it's work and watched the reflection lines. My finish filing was so much less and easier not having divots to deal with. Also the slip layer and then the mohawk of gel. That was so cool. I guess I didn't really understand self-leveling until last weeks lesson. It only took me 1 1/2 hours to do each hand. Thank you so much for taking the time in doing these videos, i literally look forward to it each week. I love the info you give! I have two questions about the overlay layer: 1-as you remove the color, the topcoat is removed as well, correct? Does the overlay NEED a top coat? This is confusing to me. 2-wouldn’t shaping the overlay open up its seal? I am not a pro, as you can tell, but I am learning a lot! Thank you!
Your videos are an inspiration to budding nail technicians like myself , thank you so much for them. And also thank your hubby Herman for being so supportive and giving us his cute hands to work with. Give him a big hug for us lol! You said we could ask questions and I couldn't ask this in the primer and bonder video comment section though I watched most of your videos including the new instructional segment on gel, sorry because this is the first video I saw when I opened UA-cam this morn lol, but I had to ask. Pls I saw a woman on Amazon answer a person's question on primer this morning. Said that the person should put on gel or acrylic immediately after applying primer, that it works best when wet , is this true and has this been proven? Always though it was best if they dried. She made it look like we have been doing it wrong all these years lol
It depends on the system you use. We primer is usually only for acrylic and not for gel. But it depends on the product. I don't recommend using acid primer as it is very aggressive and can cause allergies if misused.
Hi! Every time I put a comment I must say this I love your channel. You are real teacher that actually cares. You always make sure to explain details that for others are not important. Now that I said that let me ask. Will you show how you using gel for backfill in overlay?
Words cannot describe how grateful I am to you for all these videos, thank you sooooo much 🙏🏼 if I have a leafgel soft gel builder overly and I’m using regular polish over it and taking it off with nonacetone remover every 3 days, will that still weaken the gel overlay bc it’s soft gel that’s permeable?
Did you say that we can use regular polish over a gel overlay? I've always done it over acrylic overlays. This will make the overlay process so much easier! Thanks for the info!
I can't choose between the Kokoist pkg and the Akzents gel polish package! One day I'll have both but for now I want a professional only product line and you carry two of the best! How do I choose? I also needed to know if the Akzentz is good for nail art? Does it self level quickly?
Hi Liz! When doing an overlay, must I file down to the base gel or can I leave a layer of hard gel? Thanks you so much for all your hard work it is greatly appreciated❤️
@@TheNailHub I am curious about what to be looking when checking the health of the nail? I heard the term "ring of fire" but I have no idea what that looks like (yet) and how to avoid it. Also, how to spot onychylosis or pseudomonas in an incipient stage, will both show off as evident under the gel overlay? I started to use polygel as a natural nail overlay for my very thin and brittle nails, and so far I know to look in areas where the product has lifted, but that's it. A video on nail health and what are the red flags we should be checking would be super informative! thank you, Liz! Love from Simona in Romania
Lovelovelove your videos! Learning so much! Question - when doing these backfills, what products do you then use? Base? Do you put a fresh coat of gel overlay on top of what you've filed off?
Hi! Thank you for your videos, they're so helpful! Quick question, what should be done when you have lifting? Do you soak everything off and start all over or do you file all the lifted areas, clean them properly and then fill them?
Great video! How would I remove the color if I'm not using an efile? I'm a Diy-er. I'm guessing I don't want to soak off the polish as it'll take off the gel overlay too?
Hi Liz🙂 I didn't see any product applied for a back fill(gel) Is that because of the prep of the initial product application? I was expecting it to be more like an acrylic backfill. Thanks😊
Hi Liz! I noticed that you were hand filing the nails going in a back and forth direction. I've always understood that it's best to file natural nails in one direction, so the natural nail is not "shredded." Is it because there's an overlay on the nails, which allows you to file in both directions?
The filing in one direction is not a must unless the person is leaving their nails completely natural. And it also depends on the file quality and grit used. Also filing at a 45° angle helps to keep the edges smooth and beveled.
Hi! So rings of fire are semicircular reddish lines on the nail plate caused by overfiling. This areas are thin so the nail bed color shines through more. It’s a sign of being heavy handed. And we sell the Zephyros. It’s amazing. Check it out on thenailhub.com.
Thank you for your amazing, informational videos! I love your analytical way of explaining everything and you are so talented. I do have a question for you. Hoping you can give me some advice. I live in Arizona and I have been looking into nail schools. I am not interested in learning acrylic. Is there even such a thing as a gel only nail school? Do I have to learn acrylic even if I only want to do gel?
my suggestion is go to the cheapest nail school you can possibly find that will allow you to get your state license as the type of education you're going to get at a state-run school is not going to be great and there's no point in wasting money on it. for example I have tried to apply to start my own gel nail school that will certify people for both California and Arizona separately and both States I was told that even with all of my experience and expertise I do not qualify because I'm not willing to teach acrylic and or full cosmetology. it's crazy that the state boards literally have nothing to do with making quality nail technicians. It's a consumer protection agency.
@@TheNailHub Thanks for the advice. I will see what I can find. Wow! Can't believe they have such strict, yet not logical, stipulations. It seems that there is always resistance to change or anything that might be considered non-traditional. Don't give up! Hopefully, one day you will be able to open a gel nail school. You could count me in! :)
I've been learning to do my nails myself with gel. I thought I was doing pretty good but last weeks manicure did not last very long. Lots of lifting. After them all lifting off yesterday, I see how paper thin my nails are. Should I leave the gel off for a while or put just a thin base coat on to protect the nails as they grow out? Thank you for your videos. I'm learning so much!
Yes, I've been watching daily. Thank you for your reply. I understand the prep and take the majority of my time on the prep to make sure they are done properly.
It could also be the lamp and/or the product you are using. I know a lot of the products out there chip and lift easily so it could be a combo of not curing or not a good formula.
Hi Liz! I love all your videos, they’re so informative. I’m a DIYer & don’t have an e-file. What grit nail file would you recommend using to remove the colour on top of an overlay please? x
If you ever came to the UK.... How much would a start to finish course cost for gel sculpting, overlays, gel polish and e filing? I'm looking at young nails but I'm so used to you I basically wanna get taught and accredited by you :'D
Great video! 👍💜 Would it be possible to do gel overlay for strength and use only regular nail polish on top of it all the time? I would always just remove nail polish with nail polish remover & change the color as often as I would like.. 🙂 But what about gel regrowth? I wouldn't have to file down colored gel like you do in this video (therefore I wouldn't see the color difference)- so how much of that clear overlay should I file down to smooth out regrowth- without touching and damaging my natural nail? I had destroyed nails by overfiling before, that's why I'm scared.. 😔
Yes absolutely. Just buff the nail surface or even apply top coat to prevent staining and then you can apply your fave nail polish and swap it regularly without starting over. When backfilling clear nails it's the same process. You want to blend the old product down to be flush with the regrowth so you can fill properly. I have clear on my nails now so I am going to show this soon.
Hi Liz, my mother has very thin, brittle, flexibel nails. They peel off constantly. Also when I apply gelpolish (luxio). The gelpolish also peels off very fast. Doing nothing on her nails makes them paperthin, so she needs some kind of product on her nails. Which products from Akzentz can I use best so that they grow stronger and don’t bent as fast? Maybe in the future I will invest in the IBX- system but for now that isn’t an option. I really hope you can give me some advice! Greetings from Belgium!
If her nails are that thin I would not recommend applying anything until they have time to completely recover. Product also has a hard time adhering to over worked or overly thin nails. So if you keep trying to apply something out may just get worse. Very hard to tell with just a bit of description but if the nails aren't healthy it actually makes it harder the gel to adhere and last. Just like overworked hair won't hold a curl or won't hold color. Hope that makes sense.
Can you do this procedure with a regular file as apposed to an e-file? If not what grit would be used? Also, this procedure is with a gel overlay and not gel polish correct?
@@lynnhill2168 oh. Well, that I don't know. Lol. But I use ddfnails entire line for the most part. She has builder gels and gel polishes and acrylics. Her customer service is amazing! Liz , how did you make the " mini extencion"? With pure hard gel i guess. My mom is a nail biter and i want to extend her bitten mini nails and protect them with gel
Thank you for this series very appreciated 💜💖💜💖💜and esp the last part this week "nails dont breath" !! Omg the things you read (even from companies) on Instagram allot of lies!
Hi! I bought this bit recently and I REALLY like it. Is it normal for it to leave tracks or grooves when used in reverse, or am I doing something incorrectly? I keep the RPMs for any product removal (nothing that's actually going to touch the nail) pretty high so it glides through used in both directions, but leaves a smooth finish when used in forward. Does that make sense? Thanks!
No it should not be thin and weak. Your natural nail should be as it was before the overlay except with the shine removed from filing, etc. The only area that might be thin is the free edge as I usually bevel that.
I just had gel overlays done. Hate hate the finished frch tip! I want redo them myself. As always hair nails 🤬. So i will file off the topcoat and white paint! The only question i have is, does the overlay (after top product removed) have to be filed with a fine grit for a definitive smooth look/ finish??? Then I’ll. Re paint and topcoat. Ugh. Why cant i find a person who can do perfection. They nails look so juvenile!!! 😤🤯. And i leave a tip out of ??? Why. I showed a pic of what “style “ nail shape i wanted. Not even close. And i can see empty spots wear overlay was not applied, inconsistent corners and levels. Like wtf. How does a client tell the technician to fix so many details that should be imminent. I seen the foil forms placed crooked right from the get go. I left sooo miserable. I trust myself to fix this and am so leary to ever have my nails done again. Fyi- if ur not an artist of perfection- stay home and learn another trade. Great vid dull of valuable o. Thanku. Wish me luck.
Clearly I’m very behind in finding this channel 😅but I do have a question: I know nails don’t “breathe” but why would a regular polish/lacquer (the air dry kind) male peoples nails yellow under that if they keep it on a long time, toe nail’s especially, but don’t do that with gel products when worn for even longer time periods?
Your information was partly accurate. You really shouldn't tell people that nothing can go wrong with long use of gels or nail extender products. Do nails breathe? No, they don't. But if you went to an actual school for nails then you should know how it can be bad for extended use. Now in Cosmetology, I had to learn anatomy of the body, hair, skin and nails. There are a plethora of diseases and disorders that can be developed over time if you don't take proper take of your nails. And let's face it, about 2/3rds of people who watch your videos will not follow proper process or protocol.. so when things go wrong who will they come to with questions? You.. Maybe it's different in the Midwest? I mean I lived in Albuquerque for a while, process seemed the same for nails. I'm licensed in NJ and Florida. Please let me know. I do however, enjoy watching someone who seems properly educated. 😊
The filing in one direction is not a must unless the person is leaving their nails completely natural. And it also depends on the file quality and grit used. Also filing at a 45° angle helps to keep the edges smooth and beveled.

Can you do a video on the dust collector you’re using :)
Hope that makes sense.
is the Ericas Gel X a good alternative for this Volcano bit??
Yes they are both excellent but the gel x is for right handed people only and can only be sold to pros and active students.
Can you do this procedure with a regular file as apposed to an e-file? If not what grit would be used? Also, this procedure is with a gel overlay and not gel polish correct?
Yes you can. I would suggest 100 grit for the color removal.
Is it a gel overlay or a gel polish overlay?
@@TheNailHub Thank you!
You mentioned in another about trying to find good products for unlicensed at home users. Any progress on that?
The volcano bit she is using can be purchased by licensed and non-licensed nail techs. Check the description box. She's working hard for us. Lol😊
@@ladyinmauve Sorry I meant like the builder gels and gel polishes.
@@lynnhill2168 oh. Well, that I don't know. Lol. But I use ddfnails entire line for the most part. She has builder gels and gel polishes and acrylics. Her customer service is amazing! Her products are amazing! The prices are amazing! She's on UA-cam @DivaDollFlawless. Let me know if you get anything!!.😊
Liz , how did you make the " mini extencion"? With pure hard gel i guess. My mom is a nail biter and i want to extend her bitten mini nails and protect them with gel
That is coming soon.
Thank you for this series very appreciated 💜💖💜💖💜and esp the last part this week "nails dont breath" !! Omg the things you read (even from companies) on Instagram allot of lies!
Do you have a video on e-filing on yourself?
Do you have any tips for removing chipping gel without e file ? Can I do this with a hand file too?
LIz answers the same question below: yes, use 100 grit nail file to remove the color
Thanks!
Yes there will be texture but the lighter you work and the more careful you are you can keep the nail smoother while removing.
@@TheNailHub great tip, thank you!!
What kind of filing bit are you using?
I have the flame bit. Would you say that’s too harsh for removing product on overlays?
No the flame is also awesome. Works exactly the same way but just a different shape.
Thanks!
What is the condition of the nail once the overlay is removed. Is it thin and weak?
No it should not be thin and weak. Your natural nail should be as it was before the overlay except with the shine removed from filing, etc. The only area that might be thin is the free edge as I usually bevel that.
❤️
Can we remove the gel color with just a file?
LIz answers the same question below: yes, use 100 grit nail file to remove the color
What are you using to remove the edges on your file ?
Does this damage my real nails? I’m scared they will shave my real nail Down too
Clearly I’m very behind in finding this channel 😅but I do have a question: I know nails don’t “breathe” but why would a regular polish/lacquer (the air dry kind) male peoples nails yellow under that if they keep it on a long time, toe nail’s especially, but don’t do that with gel products when worn for even longer time periods?
Hi Erinn, the pigment stains the nail over time which creates the yellowing. Also certain ingredients in clear can do that too.
What type and brand of gel did you use for your overlay?
Kokoist. You can see it all in my video from last week.
@@TheNailHub thank you
Your information was partly accurate.
she stated that at the end of the video. how can it be bad for extended use if you're in the hands of someone that knows what they're doing?
I thought you were supposed to file the nails in 1 direction only?
The filing in one direction is not a must unless the person is leaving their nails completely natural. And it also depends on the file quality and grit used. Also filing at a 45° angle helps to keep the edges smooth and beveled.
That’s not gel overlay back fills . Look like you remove completely gel off with e-file and apply new gel color .
Backfill portion is coming next week.
Her nails don't look grown out at all!!
