In this video, Dr. Ben Leichtling discusses cyber-bullying, how it can lead to suicide, and what parents can do to intervene on behalf of their children before the situation becomes deadly.
All too often, our official systems fail victims of cyber-bullying, both at school and in the outside world. School administrators and police often do not take cyber-bullying seriously, bystanders do not intervene or become witnesses, and weaker members of peer groups go along with the bullying in order to keep it from being turned on themselves.
When the targets of bullying feel that nothing is being done to help them, they often lose hope and seek the only way out that makes sense to them -- suicide. Since parents can't rely on teachers and administrators to recognize and stop cyber-bullying before it becomes deadly, they must act on their own to keep their children safe.
Important steps parents must take when they suspect that their children are targets of cyber-bullying include:
    1. Take the situation seriously. Do not pass it off as harmless teasing or social drama.
    2. Seek help from teachers and school administrators. Record conversations, send emails documenting your discussions and take notes for future reference.
    3. Contact your local police. See if they have a special unit devoted to cyber-crimes or bullying.
    4. Follow up with school administrators to see that they act immediately in defense of your child and don't just say they are aware of the situation or are working on a plan to implement in the future.
    5. Be there for your child and assure him or her that there is a good life beyond school and that it is worth living for.
    6. Work with your children to help them develop the skills they need for dealing with difficult situations at school and outside school.
Bullying and cyber-bullying are serious situations that can lead to deadly consequences. If your school officials or police will not do what is necessary to stop bullying, you have to learn to defend your children yourself. Call Dr. Leichtling at 1-877-8BULLIEs for a personal consultation.
