though that would be a good rule, it risks edge-case interpretations by the community. would eating inside the fog *et al* be considered cheesing? are you allowed to try and force your opponents to stay in the fog (if possible), thus making it easier for you to kill them? perhaps a "staying within the fog for an extended period of time without dying risks disqualification", would be a better way to phrase their desires. though frankly, this is the problem of RS being an RPG: various mechanics and means exist for you to *not die*, and all the fog does is damage you until you die. i'm sure that even if they put a -100% healing received debuff on players in the fog for an arbitrary duration, people would still find a way around it; making it so the fog flags your character as "dead" after a certain point, without you actually dying, would work better since it would be isolated from the rest of RS's mechanics.
imo the problem is the fog didn't do enough damage. they need to incentivize players more to not be in it. if you can't out eat the fog, you can't sit in it. they could even have it scale so it isn't so bad early, but either late game it gets worse or it gets worse for every second you are in it. Eating in the fog long term would then be a losing strategy.
@@siscokidder no.. stop, you're overcomplicating things. Just "Cheesing the fog isn't allowed" should be enough. Everybody knows what it means and what it implies. Jagex is a cheap ass company. They should have just announced a tie and gave them both 10k, as Woox didn't break any rules it's not fair to say he lost. 10k is nothing to them, ridiculous company.
I used to watch the Jagex live streams religiously back then. Before this Deadman finale, I distinctly remember Ash saying something along the lines of "you could stand in a bank for the finale but you'll die but you could do it" he basically invited people to try to get away with it, and woox did. Woox won.
Additional context of the situation : The reason why people fully supported Woox over the person who actually won was because DMM was notoriously biased towards clans or just massive groups of people. There were many cases where clans would lock down the final zone and mass attack anyone in range meaning it would ultimately end with whoever has the bigger group. Both sides are correct in this case where Woox won on a technicality but ultimately it was against the spirit of the gamemode. However, the Lolol guy won due to being the last man standing in the final pvp zone after fending off the last remaining players, but it was due to having been part of a clan that made it possible, meaning you had like 20-30 people doing the work for you while sat cozy til the end. Reason why recent DMMs are more 1v1 focused and all about PVP skill rather than numbers.
Knowing Ash I think he would have gave 10k to anyone. As you said, he was in charge of the fog and he noticed his mistake. So when everyone else at Jagex decided Woox was DQ'd, Ash knew he technically won and didn't break any rules. I think Woox should have won, I understand the frustration for Jagex when now for the third time a non-pvper wins DM but hey... you rewarded the last 2 you cant blame the 3rd for outsmarting you.... Fix it and try again, cant blame the player for your mistakes is my opinion.

Personally I say Woox won, while not in the spirit of the game mode he was the legitimate last man standing and followed the rules, it's people like Woox who removes loopholes from sports and they are needed. If it was me running the event I would of declared Woox the winner with 10,000 prize but either add an additional MVP prize of for lololol.. or asked Woox and lololol.. if they would split the prize which could of been a nice sportsmanship moment. There's a reason Ash is the most beloved Mod at Jagex. This is someone that truly cares about the game and the player base. We're lucky to have such a great person at a high level for OSRS.

And this is why we call him God Ash. Not just because he can help/explain/fix everything. But because hes a god amongst men. He does what he believes is right, even when he "messes" something up. We appreciate you Ash. You are truly the MVP

If they feel so strongly about not letting someone cheese the fog, do your best to code it properly but just have a cover-your-ass rule saying that any ways to survive the fog are unintended and that big abuse will be deemed unsportsmanlike and lead to disqualification
On the off chance ash sees this suggestion: make the dog a stacking debuff. Every tick you take damage and receive a debuff, after enough stacks of that debuff you gain a second debuff that increases the damage of the fog by 1 stage. This would make standing in the fog for a long time completely impossible.
What they should've done is make it impossible to heal for a few ticks if you've taken damage by the fog. Enough ticks to where you'll take damage from the fog before being able to eat again. Then they could also reduce the amount of damage dealt by the fog as well, as the damage would not be the important part of the mechanic.

Saying “you won’t be able to do it” is different than saying “you’re not allowed to do it” Woox has routinely proven he is capable of doing things in a fashion that the rest of us have deemed impossible, redefining mechanics, discovering new Metas etc. I would donate to a fund to repay Ash. JAGEX can get f’d
Shame on the other employees for thinking anything about ash, shouldn’t have been a rift because he was kind. Not his fault the group voted woox out due to his method.
Ash took it upon him self the responsibility to ensure the fog mechanics worked. He failed. And like a Man, he bore that responsibility. He could have just said "nah fuck it, doesnt matter you lose" but the Man understands what the word responsible means (unlike most humans today) and did what he thought was the reasonable thing to do. I will never not love the Man, God Ash.
I think the decision I would have made would be to split the reward. 5000 to lolol for playing as intended and 5000 to woox for winning literally with creativity. That way you don't discredit either players achievements and soften the blow of making a blunder.
Ash is the type you want working at your company regardless what company it is - tech related or even skilled trades related. He coded the fog & overlooked something. What does he INSTANTLY do? He admits that he made a mistake & he covered the damages. Instantly. Before running it @ high level at the next meeting or what have you (Corpa people will understand what I mean here). Ash #1. Forever. I am sure him & woox if they ever hangout, the tabs on Woox. For a long time LOL. I am sure with how smart Woox is. He isn't hurting for $ at all and lets all be honest in our mid 30s these days. 10K vs the whole picture here from friendship to where you came from & where you are today with this game being a massive part of it. Is it really something to even worry about? Money is money. You'll always make more if you get out there & do your thing. Everything else, is priceless.
I wouldn't be surprised if he got a ton of shit from execs for doing this. Made the company look like the cheap fucks they are. What's another 10k to the advertising/marketing/damage control budget in the grand scheme for a $b company? He never shouldve had to pay out of pocket for this in the first place.
It’s amazing how the tournament was 8 years ago and corruption at Jagex hasn’t changed, if anything it’s gotten worse with what’s happened to Oda, sad really, Andrew Gower never wanted this for the company he created and it’s astonishing how little of his influence remains :/
I mean technically.... Ash did right, because as he said, it was HIS responsibility to make sure the fog worked properly... Look we all love Ash, I know, but he's not perfect, no one is... The difference is Ash owns up to his mistakes and makes up for them, most cannot say the same and stuff like that is WHY he's so loved.
If Ash opened any kind of donation page, he would get $10k back in a day. I'd happily give him what I can. $10k for an individual is a lot, especially where they live and on the salaries they have. If Ash ever sees this, I deeply hope he does open up something. I know his pride wouldn't allow it but idk man. Something.
"No, you didn't win in the way we said you could win so it doesn't count" Standard SE response to anyone playing FFXI or FFXIV in a way they don't like. I guess Jagex decided to borrow a play from SE
if it was such an issue after the last 2 tournaments. they should have made it a rule that you cant be in the fog at all for the final minutes of the game to win.
We really need some sort of overseer for game companies, someone that's above them and makes the calls because 99% of these game companies that are out now need some sort of supervision like a baby needs when he's having a tantrum
I won a weight loss competition for the second year in a row for 10,000$ and they disqualified me without telling me until the end because it was better for the company’s interests. :P. Shit happens, and you can’t do anything about it but move on and be the best person you can be.
If they really wanted the story of the guy actually winning the pvp battle (which makes sense), i think it would've been recieved pretty positively if they had just declared both as winners and payed out 10.000 to each
Mod Ash is the hero the players need, but not the man the company deserves, unfortunately. He is simply too good to be there, him alone probably brought his salary tenfold worthy of revenue.
I think jagex is missing a pr team. They need to be trained on public relations. The people are what makes your game and it will always be that way. The community! Without the people your game dies
Idk how the fog mechanic works now, but couldn't they just set a system where there's a standard size final square for minimal damage then every 5 tiles, the damage is increased by 1??
Imo they should've split the prize money considering the special circumstances, but mod Ash did an amazing thing, osrs wouldn't be half the game it is without him.
While I am not a RuneScape player I don't think that part matters, If you set something up and miss a way a person can win that you didn't want and they somehow find it at use it to win. Give them their win, admit you messed up be it among yourselves our to the public, and makes sure come the next time around you find ALL if not as many ways to stop said ways to win you don't want. I mean it's a type of thing in all honesty will be a kind of forever trial and error till you get it the way you truly wanted and something like that is never gonna but perfectly polished in 2 let long 3 years. As for Mod Ash 😏👍
This is very simple. Did woox break the rules or not. If woox didn't break any rules, he should have won. Plain and simple. Jagex thinking that pking him in game was the best solution is an unprofessional move. That's why Ash felt guilty and paid him. Ash knows the rules, knew he didn't break any, and paid him. Jagex has been "running" this game for over 20 years. How are they still THIS BAD at running this game??
Ash was probably also looking out for his job in some degree as well. He knew Woox had legal grounds to sue Jagex over their behavior and the entire thing was recorded, so he had all the proof in the world to win his case. If Woox decided to sue, he'd win. There is literally nothing legally binding that Jagex could have put forward to counter Woox. Which meant Ash would be the fall guy for both failing to code out what Woox did AND also for being the one to kill him publicly on stream. Do I think Woox would have sued? Nah, he didn't seem to give enough of a shit to do it even before he got the money. So Jagex got a huge break there for what could have been even more disastrous PR.
I understand why jagex refused to pay him but its their fault for messing up this many times. Either fix your terms or make the fog ramp up in damage so no one can survive if they stay in it

I think the decision I would have made would be to split the reward. 5000 to lolol for playing as intended and 5000 to woox for winning literally with creativity. That way you don't discredit either players achievements and soften the blow of making a blunder.
Mod Ash will always be a legend of game moderation.
Meanwhile I'm still salty about Jagex shutting down Darkscape and have never tried deadman once.
Mad Ash is an absolute class act. Good on him.
Jagex needs to let creativity like this be more accepted play how you wanna play
Poor Mod Ash saw RS turn into RS2 and then RS3. He saw OSRS get released and turned into RS3 v2.0. He's been through so much...
Something.
Pretty sure the reason more than 50% of us who quit playing RS was being scammed, funny Jagex did nothing about it other than sharing PSAs...
See it as a bug bountry reward?
Ash should've been reimbursed or this would've happened a couple DMMs down the line regardless.
Mod ash became a legend to the entire community that day it will be a sad day when he leaves
"No, you didn't win in the way we said you could win so it doesn't count"
Standard SE response to anyone playing FFXI or FFXIV in a way they don't like. I guess Jagex decided to borrow a play from SE
Mod Ash is THE man and I would never doubt that he would have done the right thing regardless of who it was.
if it was such an issue after the last 2 tournaments. they should have made it a rule that you cant be in the fog at all for the final minutes of the game to win.
Imagine having a golden goose and then just killing it for no reason
If they didn't want Woox to win they should have said so right away.
Yeah wtf can we get a gofundme to pay ash back?
If they really wanted the story of the guy actually winning the pvp battle (which makes sense), i think it would've been recieved pretty positively if they had just declared both as winners and payed out 10.000 to each
Why doesn't Mod Ash have a statue in-game yet? He might as well be added to the lore as another God
remember, JAGEX has been sold at least twice in 5 years...
Was Woox told before the money was sent to him that it was coming out of Mod Ash's pocket? Any man worth his salt would NOT accept money this way.
Woox wooxing and breaking the game as per usual...
When two legends cross paths.
Mod Ash has always been legit. My favorite mod.
So Jagex got a huge break there for what could have been even more disastrous PR.
no one wouldve cared about this drama at all if it wasnt woox. so for that reason woox didnt need to be reimbursed
This makes me love Ash even more, didnt think it was possible 😂
I understand why jagex refused to pay him but its their fault for messing up this many times.
Either fix your terms or make the fog ramp up in damage so no one can survive if they stay in it
6:22 this man is not human wtf o.o
God man I just love Ash, Jagex and maybe even some of us dont deserve him bro 😭
