Actually unless I'm mistaken, tick eating works because damage is calculated before it's actually applied, and there's no overkill in this game. If you only have 1 hp, then an attack can only hit you for 1 damage, so if you eat after the damage is calculated but before it's applied, your hp will go up but you'll still only take 1 damage. That's why you can't tick eat at full hp unless you eat something that increases your max hp.
Ultima Online did events like this all the time. Dead Man Mode was basically the default mode at the game's release (they too would tweak it into less and less PVP over time.) For Christmas they'd release a Free-For-All server called Santa's Slay where people would spawn in as Santas, Elves or Reindeers and battle it out. It was hilarious. No $10k prize tho. There are lots of other examples like the Abyss server with epic faction vs. faction where 6 different factions battled over control of castles producing free resources. Lots of alliances forming and a 7th faction emerging that rejected these factions and targeted everyone. Runescape's creator was a UO player during this time.
not to be that guy, but that's not really what a tick eat is. ( 11:37 ) the idea is that the damage is calculated when the projectile is fired, so if you're on 1hp most monsters can only hit you for a 1 (there's exceptions and you cant conventionally tick eat all monsters) and then you eat before you take that predetermined damage you're eating a food. there isn't ever "one game tick where you're both technically dead and alive". this fog was coded in a similar way to common projectiles, so it'd calculate its damage based on your current hp on one game tick and then would damage you the tick after, what they've done to fix that since is allow the fog to hit over your max hp and also constantly check to see if your character is stalled
