I like the idea of the dwarves losing that idea of monster hunting as being something fun or full of glory, but rather, as something very dangerous that is to be avoided. They were being constantly atacked by forgoteen beasts and lost their friend to one, it would make sense for then to lose that desire for battle. It would also make sense that a loss would make them desire more people to come to the fortress, as a way to fill the void left by Tiny.

Really makes a lot of sense that Pop took a big drop in mood after Tinny’s death. Tinny did a great job reassuring Pop and I imagine they were quite close.
Wisp is clinging to her armour and refusing all aid because she doesn't want to rot away, she wants a warriors death. As sad as it would be it would be cool asl to see her try to kick some forgotten beast to death

I didn't expect a time skip. Between that, tearing a giant spider's abdomen off with a spear, the effective super scratch technique, and the expedition leader having a lone faceoff with a giant beast before its invasion, this reads like an anime. I'd watch the Dwarf Fortress anime. Story Generation at its finest.
I love the Rutherer drawing's difference between the baby and adult. Also I haven't seen one in dwarf fortress before but the description mentioning their tail is used as a 'nest' for the young is just adorable. You just find this monster with 4 pups surrounded by the big fluffy tail.
This is kind of why I like Krugg's videos. He digs into the mechanics and turns them into a world, looks for the patterns and says, "Let's celebrate that." I don't think I've ever been more sad for a bunch of 1s and 0s, but I also love the enthusiasm of "Well, this also makes the story more interesting." I play Rimworld rather that Dwarf Fortress, but the idea is the same. It's easy to get into a comfortable stagnation and lose out on a richer story by letting both the good and bad be part of the tapestry of the experience. To go, "Well, that was a beloved character and while I'm sad they won't be joining us, their history is still part of this world." I also empathize with the "hold my temples and think for a moment, this game mechanic doesn't make sense narratively but let's figure it out."
The current states of Pop and Wisp compared to Crab and Boggy give the impresion that later two dwarves have been able to maintain thier mental well being owing to romance with Queen Bee.
The time jump was really artfully done! I love the cinematic of "sad thing happens" -> jump to the future that shows recovery and a happy thing just starting (usually it's kids, but the tavern opening worked great for that). You've gotten quite good at crafting these narratives!
excellent videos as always! I am a simple man, i see kruggy upload, i go clickety click. I like the time jump, helps to keep the pace of the fortress intact because sometimes this game can be incredibly uneventful
You are an extraordinary youtuber. Most of your videos are really casual and cosy in some sense, which is great in on itself, but episodes like this one are just masterpieces. You are a marvellous storyteller, keep up the good work.
This playthrough really just highlights how much of a seriously deep game Dwarf Fortress is. When emergent gameplay and a willing, thoughtful player combine, beautiful storytelling opportunities open up. There's only a few games that are like that. What a wonderful series this has been so far.
Dwarves don't cry! Elves cry! 🤧Agh, I'm crying! What a fantastic episode Krugg. Watching your talents as an artist and storyteller grow over time has been a real treat, putting it lightly.
I’m interested to see all the new faces visiting Spearcavern soon! Though, I must say, I am also interested in the idea of some new faces also. Especially now we are missing two key warriors. Not too many mind you.
Tavern will certainly bring in a variety of types, though. Perhaps not a variety of professions. I wonder if it wouldn't also help to say, build a small general purpose temple or a library.
I'm beyond impressed how you manage to sell us the idea of the worlds of Dwarf Fortress, and convey them in a way that comes of as genuine, interesting, exciting, tragic and emotive. I like that the change of leadership in the fortress changed everything. It gives so much more weight to the tragedy. As if everyone had lost their purpouse... or forgot what they were there for. No longer beast-slaying warriors, no longer pursuing glory through battle as they once had. It's as if when Tinny passed away, everyone's dreams of glory went with her.
Holy crap. What a turn... Poor Tinny. She didn't deserve that. What a way for a forgotten beast to be remembered, the scars they inflict. May she find peace. I think it was a good choice to have the time skip, narratively speaking. A lot of the time when these playthroughs have a major death in them, there's an immediate drop in the dwarves' moods and some of them don't bounce back from that, and when there's more than plenty of dwarves to manage, usually things can spiral out of hand and get bad. So you want to see how things play out before continuing the series, if it's possible with a small squad. So it seems the team's now effectively out two members because of Wisp losing her arms, too. That's also terrible. But maybe in the coming years that dwarven child will grow into an even more productive member of the community she was born into? With a legacy Tinny left behind, that might be challenging to live up to. But yeah, hell of a way for a Season 2 to kick off. Best of luck.
Well now i wanna make more art of our lovable bunch after all those years. Will wait to see how things progress with the next episode. Crab shows some real character development in his new looks and I'm loving it!
I REALLLY love the way you wrote and presented the theology of Idek in this one. You did an amazing job coming up with a good lore around a Diety of art and death. And parts of it like the idea of the souls of the dead beings used to craft the artwork that is the world itself is both incredibly cool but also fits with a Dwarf Fortress setting so very well!!
It was always in the back of my mind that this day might come, but I hoped that it somehow wouldn't. Thank you for handling it so well. It was very touching. You made me think of loved ones I have lost, and how their memories live on inside of us.
Damnit Krugg, you glorious, GLORIOUS storyteller you! Here I am at work, crying while watching a Dwarf Fortress video, as my coworkers give me a weird look. I've seriously never felt more connected to any of my own dwarves than I do to your humble little clan here at Spearcavern.
I knew things would get interesting when someone would die, but didnt expect it’d get THIS interesting, with a timeskip and everything. Also, the hilarity of how hard a single death hits here compared to how expendable people think dwarves usually are
These are always such a joy and made even better by listening to your proccess afterwards, I think the way you handled everything, the issues with not being able to grasp, having someone die 'off screen', the time jump, was amazing and really narratively fulilling. Thank you as always!
Random thoughts 1. Ye df really needs some extra accessibility stuff, I mean, they did had prosthetics in medieval times 2. The Crab scratches are his claws 3. For sure open the fortress to exceptional dwarves and their families, also orphans without parents
this is incredible... the foreshadowing, the fight, the bait and switch with boggy, the mythology, the timelapse, the way the fort Feels different with a different person at the helm... really really excellent storytelling. i yelled out loud when i saw what happened...
Honestly, for the one who has no ability to grasp, we should do a vote. If we should full, heal them, and say it was an act of mercy from the gods. If the community decides to go with it.
Humans are a storytelling species. One of our greatest abilities is to immerse ourselves in stories of places and people we'll never see in the physical world. I think this channel showcases how powerful this can get in a wonderful way.
With his scratching attacks as deadly as they are, it is obvious that he was dubbed "The Crab" for the strength of his fingers rather than his attitude.
One of the most unfortunate things I've ever learned is that nothing brings people together quite like tragedy through the death of a loved one, be it family or friend.
Friendly reminder to not read through the comments if you dont' want spoilers!

This playthrough really just highlights how much of a seriously deep game Dwarf Fortress is. When emergent gameplay and a willing, thoughtful player combine, beautiful storytelling opportunities open up. There's only a few games that are like that. What a wonderful series this has been so far.

Just looking at this image.... it breaks my heart

Damn...
I love how dramatic the life of tiny dwarves can be. Excelent job wit this (and everyother) series!!
Really glad you're still around, Krugg. These videos feel like a cozy little corner of the internet, away from the crazies.
R.I.P Tinny...
Hurrah ! Hip ! Hip Hurrah ! *KRUGGSMASH is back!*
Wishing you and your family all the best.
Oh my gosh, I've never been so affected by the loss of a single dwarf before!! You're an expert storyteller, Krugg.
...Well, at least Boggy's holding up. I worry about Wisp, though...
That eulogy hit me hard, dude. Good video, though!
Been checking if a new video was out for a few weeks now and just as I was about to do so today this came out :p
AH a new kruggsmash video just before I have to go to my classes. Life is cruel sometimes.
Cant help myself but to play the intro on 1,5 speed, such a banger
Over the last 2 days I've been watching all the spearcavern episodes to finally catch up to this new one. Great work as always, Krugg!
It was always in the back of my mind that this day might come, but I hoped that it somehow wouldn't. Thank you for handling it so well. It was very touching. You made me think of loved ones I have lost, and how their memories live on inside of us.
Just want to comment i really love thee art you do for Emi. Real cinnamon roll energy.
glad to see you up (down?) and about!
I really liked the 8 year time jump after such a dramatic event.
i think the time jump was very tactful and made a lot of sense, great video
I knew things would get interesting when someone would die, but didnt expect it’d get THIS interesting, with a timeskip and everything. Also, the hilarity of how hard a single death hits here compared to how expendable people think dwarves usually are
Another great episode, thanks Krugg!
These are always such a joy and made even better by listening to your proccess afterwards, I think the way you handled everything, the issues with not being able to grasp, having someone die 'off screen', the time jump, was amazing and really narratively fulilling. Thank you as always!
Banger episode
Yay! Welcome back Krugg! EDIT: Oh no. Poor Tinny :(
Random thoughts
1. Ye df really needs some extra accessibility stuff, I mean, they did had prosthetics in medieval times
2. The Crab scratches are his claws
3. For sure open the fortress to exceptional dwarves and their families, also orphans without parents
Good morning? Now that Kruggsmash is here, it's a GREAT morning!
this is incredible... the foreshadowing, the fight, the bait and switch with boggy, the mythology, the timelapse, the way the fort Feels different with a different person at the helm... really really excellent storytelling. i yelled out loud when i saw what happened...
My day is now complete and shall now retire. Thank you Kruggsmash
Honestly, for the one who has no ability to grasp, we should do a vote. If we should full, heal them, and say it was an act of mercy from the gods. If the community decides to go with it.
Thank you Krugg!!! Definitely needed this this week ❤❤❤❤
I can't wait for the Dwarf Fortress update where Dwarves will help other dwarves if they aren't capable of dressing or feeding themselves. :T
A good day when krugg uploads
That eulogy was truly one of the most profound and touching things I have ever heard.
Humans are a storytelling species. One of our greatest abilities is to immerse ourselves in stories of places and people we'll never see in the physical world. I think this channel showcases how powerful this can get in a wonderful way.
Damn it, Krugg, first you made me cry over little ASCII dwarf faces and now I'm crying over slightly larger dwarf sprites.
The time jump was great, i feel very emotional about the events of this episode. Amazing work
Krugg for dramatics
You may want to restore Wisps grasping via gutter doing a dramatic surgery. Conversely there are Prosthetics mods
This intro is still banging! It's a joy to see with every new episode and puts ya right in the mood.
Krugg has posted a new story.
Today is a good day.
Finally getting caught up. This brought me to tears.
Thanks for everything you do.
Was wondering when another episode would drop, your videos are always peak
This has been my favorite series yet, Wonderful work! I hope this series goes on for a long time.
Gosh... Your mythology is amazing, thank you for all your hard work!
