In the 1970s Michael McDonald was EVERYWHERE. You couldn’t turn on the radio without hearing him singing back up on numerous hits, including many with Steely Dan.

Hey, I haven’t heard this song I’m decades. Yes the Doobie brothers are marvelous. The synthesizer gives that funky bottom sound. I also can’t believe this was released in 1976. Sounds more like the 80s.

Doobies had two excellent drummers, no machines with that band. The TV version with Skunk Baxter solo jam is a classic

The story goes that Michael McDonald was having problems writing the lyrics to the melody of what would become "You Belong to Me." Ted Templeman, who produced all the big acts on Warner Bros. Records (like Carly, The Doobies, and Van Morrison, etc.), suggested Michael call Carly to enlist her help. She did and the song appeared on both their forthcoming albums. Carly's release of it was a big hit. So it was no surprise when she decided to record another McDonald song, "It Keeps You Runnin'." This time, however, The Doobies had the bigger hit and the rest is history, as they say. Thanks 'Drummin & Harri.

A good backline of how "You Belong To Me" developed. I played Carly's version a lot as well. The same happened with Kenny Loggins' input to What A Fool Believes. Michael had it most of the way but Loggins put the finishing touches on it. Magical times. Thanks John!!

My favorite Doobie Brothers song. For me - it's Michael McDonald's best vocal... and the keyboards are so funky - it's funkylicious.
And some nice lyrics as well...
    "Are you gonna worry...
for the rest of your life?
    Hey, yeah...
Why you in such a hurry...
to be lonely one more night?
    Hey, yeah...
Well, I know what it means to hide your heart...
    from a long time ago...
    Oh, darling...
    It keeps you runnin'."
LOVE this song! One of my all time favorites.

Imadrummin keeps the views and likes comin' Harri's way with top tier selections like this gem from the Doobies! I wouldn't expect anything less from you, brother! McDonald was with the Doobie in early '75, Harri -- I saw them in concert with him in February of '75. Great selection, song and reaction! Thank you, fellas!

I like McDonald and the McDonald version of the Doobies, but some just could not stand the change to their sound. McDonald has an unbelievable voice - so soulful. Tom Johnston is great, too.

From the 1976 album, " Taking It To The Street", The Doobie's 6th album.
Written by Michael McDonald, it's wonderful catchy melody and captivating lyrics incorporate a more soulful and jazzy R&B taste. Michael's powerful, so renowned enticing vocals, blending with the beautiful harmonies make for a delightful tune. The gospel based keyboarding and such sweet instrumentation made for another winner for The Doobies. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Imadrummin.👏👏 Cheers from Canada. 🇨🇦

The new era of Michael McDonald began at this time. 1974/75 to fill in for the ailing Tommy Johnston. I read somewhere the percussion layer was probably the Ace Tone Rhythm Producer FR-15 made in 1975. Same time frame as this song. The Doobie Brothers had two drummers which was appealing and worked so well together. John Hartman, Michael Hossack and later Keith Knudsen and Chet McCraken. Bobby LaKind on percussion. Thanks for the reaction Harri.

This was probably my first "favourite song" not influenced by siblings, parents or peers. Just straight from the radio. The melancholy pre-chorus, (I know what means to hide your heart etc...) is still one of my favourite pieces of music. Thanks for the reaction.

Back to listen to it with you again!
These guys really live up to it. Every time I listen to this i love it more. And I'll listen more than once! It IS a gorgeous song.
Isn't it funny how some bands can use a techy sound and sound fake? And then The Doobies can use it, and it sounds so right???
How do you keep from singing, lol!! Out of great appreciation, Harri, had to drop a dime this time. You've got a great ear, and i just love your vibe.

Yeah, this was their first album with Michael McDonald in the band. I remember hating it when it came out, because their sound was so much different than their previous albums.
Michael McDonald ia a great talent in his own right, but I don't care for the way he changed the band from what they originally were.
