Amazing. I'm a 60 year Young who has been teaching school and woodworking on the side for many years and I can tell you this was the most relaxing educational thing I've seen on youtube.
Probably not so much from your end Wes but from this end that was a very enjoyable and relaxing video watching those old logs getting cut into beautiful and useful lumber. Thanks for your time and labor in making it. 👍
Watching you saw these logs really makes me appreciate just how much modern technology has improved our lives. Imagine what this process was like a couple thousand years ago.
Great videos man, keep them coming! Just for your information, the dark patches on the first log is known as blue stain. And you are absolutely correct, blue stain is the beginning stages rot. It does not affect the structural integrity of the boards and as far as grading purposes it is unlimited in all but appearance grades.
Another interesting video to watch, there was nice grain showing on those cut planks of pine, and so nice to see your lovely young son safe in the back ground. Your wife has designed your T shirt nicely, good luck with those.... Greetings from Australia 👍
Enjoyed this video as well as the others you produce. Your son really does like to help out. Keep that relationship as long as you live. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
That is some fine looking lumber you got out of those logs. Looking at those wide boards makes me want to go out and build something. I hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas!
¡Qué video tan fascinante! Me encantó ver el proceso de transformación de esos troncos en hermosas piezas de madera. Además, la narración detallada proporciona una excelente comprensión de cada paso del proceso. ¡Excelente trabajo!
Do you leave the sliced boards on top of the slab while it's cutting to get a straighter cut? I would think intuitively you'd want to pull them off to take the extra pressure off the blade. Great video.
When we built new houses in the Black Forest after the war, this is what we would do by hand for 14hrs a day, no weekends. Glad that technology has advanced so much since then
I have watched on and off in the past and really enjoy your honest videos. Finally subscribed after the walnut log video. I find myself nervous at times in those special logs as well when they are on my mill. You make awesome family videos and I’ve been watching them with my kids as well!
The author does like to from scratch, ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practise the full stack project, is still great.
I have a novice question. When you are cutting the boards, why do you leave the cut boards in place and cut the next one? Does that technique improve the cutting? Does the weight of the cut board(s) make the blade track truer?
It’s just easier. The weight on top has no bearing on the blade. The blade kerf clears a path for the blade so nothing but sawdust is touching the body of the blade. So, it’s easier to make a bunch of boards, then take them off, instead of one at a time.
As a kid we used to take the saw dust from dad's chainsaws and mix wax and a little bit of hot wax and pack them in ice cube trays and make camp fire starters.. we used them for camping alot..
Great video Wes. Not been about so much - all sorts going on here (some not good) and not had much time for UA-cam in general. Hope your & the family had a great Christmas, best wishes for 2023, and stay safe & well. 👍👍
You are the next one up buddy been watching your channel for months now and seen your views skyrocket. I wish you great success keep your good attitude and I pray you reach the stars. We are all stewards of the land. Save the land!
Great job. Would it be possible to put a hoist from the roof rafters to make turning the log/cant easier? It might require adding to the rafters, but it would be easier and safer than turning by hand. Wrapping a strap or chain around the log would allow it to be turned.
The shed would need serious modification for that. There's another sawyer on UA-cam, Josaljo Won I think is his name, that uses a chain and his front end loader bucket. I could probably do something with my loader that would be a lot better.
i do not think you planed this, but when you plugged in your lights, my screen went black and into ads. love to see that slow growth straight grain wood.
It's a good thing you maintained your balance Wes, I don't think that aluminum table is stout enough to support your weight. Wow those wide planks are like some of the flooring that is in the historical houses around my area. You don't see wide pine flooring planks anymore...not that these are going to be used for flooring...just saying. Great video thumbs up.
Since you have a manual mill, have you thought about adding 2 or 3 cross-pieces to the underside so you can use a 1.5 or 2-ton jack to raise the log instead of having to use a pry bar to lift the log? You would have almost infinite control of the height. It sure would help with you being by yourself.
🤣He probably went and blew $4.95 for a brand new one for doing "square" work. I can't imagine how long it would take to wear the edges enough to make any kind of difference wiping sawdust off boards..... 🤣
I just spent nearly and hour watching you cut logs. I don’t even know why, I don’t need wood, but I am still here. Thumbs up. Oh… by the way, is it “sawed” or “sawn”?
Read through this because it's not going where you think it is. As a rule I absolutely hate videos where the poster has a ton of face time because they spend most of it grinning, mugging for the camera, and bragging about themselves and their skills... however... you spend the time educating and explaining, and you're personable and likeable and it's more of a friendly visit to a knowledgeable friend than a selfie-laden self-love fest full of begging for subscriptions and likes. I intend to see more of your posts and will "like" them because I like them. 👍👍👍👍👍
Question: were you concerned the tractor wouldn't pick it up because of it's mechanics or that the log would tip the whole thing forward off it's back wheels because of it's weight? Question: As uneducated about wood as I am, I've seen a lot of these from many different posters and one thing always strikes me, I thought putting water on raw wood warped it, yet you all do it, is there something you do to prevent this, or am I thinking from a misperception? Kudos for not turning this into a continuous/nonstop ad for every piece of equipment and wood treatment you use and instead saving that stuff for the ending.
In Colorado we have huge swaths of forest that have been killed off by mountain pine beetles. The devastation is a real shame, but fortunately in those areas where the dead trees may be felled, it yields some really beautiful lumber that sells for higher dollar than what would otherwise be gained had it not been killed by the beetles. That's making lemonade when given lemons. As far as I know there really isn't much negative effect upon the integrity of the board.
Love this channel but as a Brit hearing the word ‘sawed’ instead of ‘sawn’ keeps giving me forest eye. It’s like texted and tex-ted lol. Awesome to see that pine go.. bet it smells amazing when you’re cutting up a freshly felled 🌲
I would try and make my own press bourd out of all that sawdust that is made make a mold/press a cement mixer to use ase a mixer for the dust and gluepour it in and press it
Looks like you got lucky and didnt have any metal in the log. I bought around 50 used telephone poles knowing there would be the metal fasteners in them that had to be removed but I wasnt prepared for having to pay 20.00 every time to the portable sawmill guy when he kept hitting 9mm and high powered rifle bullets. I can understand the high powered rifle bullets maybe because of deer hunters but when I weighed the other bullets and kept weighing close to 115grains, I knew they were 9mm pistol bullets and can only guess that wherever they pulled these telephone poles out of was either close to a shooting range or a lot of people somehow had the same idea of stapling targets on them for target practice. I still saved A LOT of money by going that route instead of buying Lowe's garbage lumber that's so warped you build a round house out of them, but the sawmill guy said he been cutting lumber for people for over 30 years and has never gone through so many blades on one person and in one day. ... out of the approx 50 poles he hit bullets in 20 of them 😲

Hi from Germany, greeting Wolfgang
Amazing. I'm a 60 year Young who has been teaching school and woodworking on the side for many years and I can tell you this was the most relaxing educational thing I've seen on youtube.
Thanks! Really glad you enjoyed it!
Tranquil.
I'm 69 years old, you know, when people say 60 years young it just makes you look old.
Probably not so much from your end Wes but from this end that was a very enjoyable and relaxing video watching those old logs getting cut into beautiful and useful lumber. Thanks for your time and labor in making it. 👍
It is surprising what you can discover inside an old log. Nature loves to astound us. Wes, we wish you the merriest Christmas ever. God bless brother.
That’s some great looking pine boards. I wouldn’t have thought it would’ve looked that good. Thanks for sharing. Great looking shirts.
Makes me want a sawmill! Good job!👍
I've tried to convince my wife I need one. Hasn't worked yet lol
Me too.
Some beauty boards today. Looks like your mill could use some more supports to help with these heavy pieces, wouldn't want to bend the deck.
Thanks for the interesting video. It really is amazing what good lumber you can get out of an ugly looking log !!
It sure is.
I always like to see the very center cut where the life of the tree began. Thanks for your videos!
That's my favorite too.
Watching you saw these logs really makes me appreciate just how much modern technology has improved our lives. Imagine what this process was like a couple thousand years ago.

Enjoyed this video as well as the others you produce. Your son really does like to help out. Keep that relationship as long as you live. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
I just love watching this. Something almost primeval about cutting and sawing wood. Such a basic human thing to do.
That is some fine looking lumber you got out of those logs. Looking at those wide boards makes me want to go out and build something. I hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas, Mark! Always appreciate your comments.
¡Qué video tan fascinante! Me encantó ver el proceso de transformación de esos troncos en hermosas piezas de madera. Además, la narración detallada proporciona una excelente comprensión de cada paso del proceso. ¡Excelente trabajo!
It’s so lovely to hear your little guy singing happily in the background
As a fellow sawyer, I’m always amazed at what each log produces after it’s cut . It’s hard work but I enjoy the outcome. Nice video.
Great looking design on the t shirt!!
Compliments of the season to you and family
I love watching your work because you are sawing timber in the correct way.
Beautiful wood and excellent work from you 👍👍👍Thank you for sharing. Be safe 🇨🇦
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU AND YOURS

thanks for the video. wishing you and your family a very MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Merry Christmas, Charles, always appreciate your comments.
You’ve done well Wes! Ill check out your store in a bit! Merry Christmas to you and your family! God bless, take care and stay safe!🙏✝️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Merry CHRISTmas. Abundant blessings of peace, joy, and love.
Looks like you took one to the old snoz. Gotta watch that lumber man. :)

This is the first time I’ve watch you but you did a very good job looks like you have a very nice set up and I’ll be watching for you God bless
Cool video as always! Can't wait for that new logo to come out.
Beautiful work as always, Wes! Merry Christmas!🙏
Thank you for always giving us interesting videos!! Not everyone succeeds at that!! 🥴 God bless you and your family! 🙏🌟💕
Thanks, Dianne!
Like your minilistic Xmas lights, merry Christmas from spain

@@falllineridge outstanding! I’ll use it when I start my old mill in the spring 👍

Great videos are really worth watching, thank you! Pity the advertisers on utube are passing me off, thank you!
Like those Low Clamps. Looks like you can go all the way down to ¾" inches.
Yes, but the mill head can only go down to about an inch and an eighth to an inch and a quarter.
just got finish cutting some white oak trees.. darn trees want to check really bad. must be the cold?
You know how the adage goes: don't judge a book by its cover. Its so true with those two ugly (on the outside) logs.
Beautiful looking log so far
Have you thought about building your little guy a log cabin out of the round cut offs from the logs?
Cool. Thanks!
Very nice wood you are getting out of that tree......
I didnt tell you this but on a cant that big the gravity clamp should hold just fine..... Great job. Thanks.
I use the gravity clamp a lot. Probably not recommended.
Tractor did good, 👍 nice shirt buddy
Love your videos smells sweet kinda
Spalting adds to the character!!🧡👌👍👍
Those are some heavy planks, especially when they are wet.
Are you still satisfied with the LT15? Or do you wish you had gone one size larger?
I like it. It's really about what I need for my purposes. Although sometimes I run into a log like this and I wish I had some hydraulics.
Love your videos - thank you!!!
Thanks for watching, Allan!
i do not think you planed this, but when you plugged in your lights, my screen went black and into ads. love to see that slow growth straight grain wood.
Interesting, no that was not planned, I let UA-cam place them where they want. Appreciate you watching.
It's a good thing you maintained your balance Wes, I don't think that aluminum table is stout enough to support your weight. Wow those wide planks are like some of the flooring that is in the historical houses around my area. I think Kubota understates the capacities of its loaders. I hop[e you didn't give yourself a black eye from catching that peavey in the face.
Little nose scratch, no biggie. It was bark, probably not as serious as the peavy would have been.
Since you have a manual mill, have you thought about adding 2 or 3 cross-pieces to the underside so you can use a 1.5 or 2-ton jack to raise the log instead of having to use a pry bar to lift the log? Good very good. I am from Brasil. I love Wood Mizer. My dreans life is lt15 wide.
Run a metal detector over them to check for any metal in the logs. A lot better than eating up a band blade.
great t shirt she is doing great
Merry Christmas
Cute t-shirt.
I suggest that using your speed square to clean the sawdust off is not the best idea. It will change or wear the square edges and wreck the square.
Awesome machine! How much would you charge a customer for this cutting?
Thanks.
Some of that pine could be used for guitar bodies.
That's the tee shirt I got. It's a good shirt. Shipping was quick too.
Thanks, David! Much appreciated!
ould you please make a video about how you can take the most out of the log and how you measure the number of logs or boards?
I've got a video entitled "Simple Sawmill Technique Maximizes Production." That might be what you're looking for.
Unsure where you call home but would guess South Carolina? Merry CHRISTmas to you & your family!
My grand Pa and uncle ran a mill when I was young. It was tough work. Rain snow roast your butt heat the job had to be done.
Question did you check for metal before cutting this log.
Nice lumber
Why do you leave the sawn boards on the log when doing the rest? Does that not bog down the saw?
Nice video.
Is there any practical reuse for all of that sawdust?
I have an lt40 you should try the vortex blades there nice and there’s hardly any sawdust left on the log after each cut
23 inch monster lol. But darn nice job! I don't think we could do ours without the hydraulics! How do you do your band sharpening?
In Colorado we have huge swaths of forest that have been killed off by mountain pine beetles. The devastation is a real shame, but fortunately in those areas where the dead trees may be felled, it yields some really beautiful lumber that sells for higher dollar than what would otherwise be gained had it not been killed by the beetles. That's making lemonade when given lemons. As far as I know there really isn't much negative effect upon the integrity of the board.
I'm thinking, maybe you could use a sack or a bucket to capture the waste the machine produces.
Im surprised you dont run a metal detector over these logs
👍FROM CADILLAC MICHIGAN
Do you ever swing a metal detector over your lumber before milling? Seems like a good idea to me.
It does.
I wonder what do you do with your saw dust?
Nice👍👍🙏🏼🙏🏼
I think our eduction systems hold teach more about ,what's real !!
You are wasting a lot of lumber. Start at the small end and save those early cuts!
I watch but don't comment a lot so here's one for the algorithm.
We're u cutting lumber 5/4 or 6/4 or better on those pine slabs !! Merry Christmas 🎄❤️ to all y'all 🙂
8/4, thick!
What is the reason for leaving multiple boards on the mill before removing them?
Looks to be more efficient with time. He does the cuts all at once. Then shoves the pile off onto his tractor in one process.
Cool
Just curious. Why should there be metal in a log?
now i know how to use a speed square.
I would try and make my own press bourd out of all that sawdust that is made make a mold/press a cement mixer to use ase a mixer for the dust and gluepour it in and press it
Nice.
