the Germans made this engine very well. there is a reason to use that thermostat in any climate where you live.
the engine has to warm up fast, to get the best out off it and less fuel consumption without the choke.
beautiful explained Tony and as always a good video.
Some folks like to rebuild their engines very few years. Thats why they remove the thermostats and flaps.
@@vintage76vipergreenBeetle It’s never a good idea to take them out. There are more reasons to leave them in. I have seen a lot off stuff over the years and at one day you will see the difference between doing the right thing or cutting corners. Just my opinion.
@@VWBEETLEOVAL1955 honestly, I think the Germans were geniuses. For many reasons. And then of course not for some reasons lol however, I think they did a fine job with these engines.
Had no idea these things had a thermostat. 3 months in ownership so far and everyday I learn something new. Great explanation in all subject thus far. Thanks for all you do.
Thanks for the lesson. It's amazing how that thermostat retracts back with you just blowing on it.
You’re very welcome, and thank you for being her. Yeah when I was blowing air on it, it did compress quite quickly
Nice demonstration Slade. Those thermostats are cool! =)
Thank you CT! I truly appreciate you stopping by I really mean that. Hope to see you soon.
Pyrex! Made in Corning NY, my hometown where much of my family worked at Corning Glass Works!
Pyrex is nice quality. Probably shouldn’t be sneaking them into the garage 😁
I agree 100% with everything you said on this video! thermostats, In my opinion, are so very important to run and you are exactly correct about the premature cylinder/head wear because of the slowing of the thermal mis regulation that occurs when no thermostat is utilized!
Thank you my friend, and thank you for being here. I hope I wasn’t coming off as a know it all. Somethings I just firmly believe in.
@@SladesVWBeetle Hey Brother I Agreed with you in black and white. I don't care in the least what people think! No one is a know it all brother. but there are many "know quite a bit" folks like you. Nothing to be ashamed of! I enjoy every minute I spend watching your Videos! Because I learn from you all of the time! Thank you for that!
@@TheWhitetailrancher thanks brother, I truly appreciate you being part of the community, I really mean that. I just try to show what I know, or at least what I think I know. 😂
this is one of those issues that is like oil (brad penn vs anything else) or oil filter (wix vs anything else) or even brake fluid (dot 3 vs anything else). i'm not brave enough to tackle the topic and you know i love an in depth look at things.
Scotty, you do like in-depth things and I truly respect that about you. I never bring up oil, anywhere on the Internet. I learned from that lesson 😂😂
Very informative video. Thank you my friend for giving Jaxon a shout out. He really liked it and so did his mom.
I am so happy Adam, I’m really glad that Jaxon enjoyed the shout out, and his mom! Thank you for being a friend, and part of our community here.
Someone mentioned it but the engineers designed it that way for a reason. Thanks for the video🇩🇪👍
Slade! Thanks for the video. Couldn’t agree more: run the thermostat!
Thank you Jeff, and thank you for taking the time to comment.
Great work! I wish everyone would use flaps and be sure they are loose too. I had a set of flaps rusted closed. Nightmare! Thanks for showing this.
Thanks brother, I just give my opinion, I know some people don’t think it matters but it does make a difference
Again another excellent video with one of the best explanation regarding the VW engine thermostat and why it is necessary to install and use.
Thank you James, and thank you for being part of the community.
Great video. Honestly, can't lie, I didn't even know it had a thermostat. I need to check mine out now. Thnaks, EE.
Honestly some people don’t know, believe it or not. I try to bring up everything I possibly can, just to be helpful.
Nice demo. Also a great shout out !
You’re aging yourself using terminology like recording “on film”! Ha ha! I’m right there with you buddy! I worked at Kodak 20 years!
Haha!! I can’t break the ole habits 😂
Great video. I have been running my super beetle with out a thermostat and have condensation in the oil fill. Proves the engine was running cold. I will be installing the thermostat soon.
Thank you Jeff, and thank you for being here. Yes you want the engine to warm up quicker, and stay warm. I surely hope that made sense.
Great video, very informative. Never looked at mine to see if it has one or not and how dirty it might be. Had the car for 23 years now between my daughter and me.
That’s awesome Barry, With having it that long, chances are it is probably on there. I’m just guessing of course.
Great video. The demo is very detailed as to how it all works. Is the slot mount bracket critical on placement to the engine block for the flaps to open completely? My engine is running a bit warm and I wonder if I should loosen the bracket and shove it up as far as the slot will let it move. Also got to back off the timing from 32 to 28 to see if that will help. Thanks for all the videos. You need to do a baywindow next build. I need lots of videos to get that money pit back on the road.
Honestly William, that bracket is adjustable.
So you could try adjusting it up, to open the flaps further. I surely hope that made sense.
And honestly I never go above 30° full advance unless I really have to. I try to keep it between 28 to 30. So it don’t run hot.
Hey buddy! How’s it going? Always informative videos for us VW newbie’s!
Thanks for the video see ya on the next one.
Thank you so much Doug!!
Great video. Good information
Thank you!!
Thirty five years ago, (when I was 22) one of those thermostat bellows opened up so wide on my beetle, that it destroyed the bracket and stuck in that position, never going back to normal. I then replaced it with a new one and that got so hot, that the solder holding it together melted and it fell apart. Horrible things.
Wow! I’ve never ran into problems with them.
We’re they years they didn’t use this thermostat system? I have a 64 and haven’t seen one on the engine
Good info, Slade. Years ago, lazy mechanics discarded these thermostats in areas with warm climates because installing the fan shroud is more difficult when messing with the thermostat rod as it is threaded through the cylinder head. Pure laziness, only.
Getting the engine to operating temperature as quickly as possible is the goal every ACVW owner should desire. A properly functioning thermostat and flaps system accomplishes this goal. No thermostat, and the engine runs too cold for longer periods of time.
Who would remove their thermostat from a water-cooled engine? No one with any sense. Why would you remove one from an air-cooled engine, then?
Right?!?!? Thank you, you put that all very well my friend. I just believe the engine design is amazing, and I try to keep them true to what they are. I hope you have been doing well, and you’re healthy and happy my friend!
I have an entire VW flat four disassembled in the main room of my apartment. I regret nothing
Ohhhh I did they stuff years ago. Now I’m not allowed 😁😂😂
I would love to see a side by side comparison of the original and new thermostats failing. I've often heard that the coil version fails in the closed position. It makes sense considering the relatively weak spring at the front if the shroud. One wonders though if the new style just needs a better spring and it too would fail in the open position.
I completely agree Raymond, I have no way to do a comparison at this time.
I literally just had a conversation a few weeks ago with a guy who had the spring style, and unfortunately it failed with no airflow to the engine. The outcome was pretty upsetting.
@@SladesVWBeetle, the wax pellet coiled thermostat was never meant to be used as the engine thermostat. It's just a hack. The original bracket doesn't even fit it. They call these thermostats, "Mexican", but they were never used in Mexico.
I sure hope you didn’t take that glass bowl back into the house! 😂
Well, I got caught!! 🤦🏼♂️🥺😁
Hi there, no live chat Saturday night?
It was a very hectic weekend for me so far.
Doing landscaping outside. I’ll be posting about the live chat next Saturday night for sure though.
I thought everybody could use a break from me 😁
Sir Slade: great video! 2 things:
1. could you have used the heated ultrasonic cleaner on the old thermostat, and
2. what is your opinion of the more modern designed replacement thermostats that you can get say from JP Group Dansk P/N 8114600100, that look more like a CB Antenna coil - very greatly spaced coil windings?
3. I used to run without the flaps and thermostat when I rebuilt my VW engine back in '76, and true to form, it took a while for that oil to get warm! Thanks for pointing that out!
The antenna coil style thermostats are not safe to use. When they fail, they fail closed, and your engine will overheat and seize. Stick with the original style.
Vintage 76 nailed it!! If you’re going to use an aftermarket thermostat, just go to awesome powder coat online.
And get a genuine German one so they fail in the open position, if anything ever goes wrong.
I would never chance dipping one into the heated ultrasonic cleaner. I like using the water method so I can monitor how hot it is, so I don’t damage the thermostat. Thank you for being here Daniel I truly appreciate it.
@@SladesVWBeetle I was actually thinking that you could control the heat on the ultrasonic cleaner not only as a test vehicle, but also to for cleaning the thermostat as well. But I take to heart about getting the true German type replacements. Their quality is hard to substitute.
Slade my Son, my thermostat does not seem to reach opening temp on the car. Works great when I hit it with a heat gun.
The left side cylinders ( where the cooler is) runs about 100 d hotter than the side that the bellows is mounted on.
I've had the system apart a couple of times. Everything is clea, clear and unobstructed. I realize the function of the bellows is to hold the flaps closed against the tension of the spring which defaults to flaps open
Anyway! I'm wonddring is it common for the oil cooler side cylinders to run hotter than the bellows side?
Hello Lawrence, I hope that you’ve had a really wonderful weekend!!!
From my experience, and I really don’t have proof. The side that the cooler is on, the cylinders will run a little bit warmer.
Now remember my friend that is just a personal opinion. But it makes sense the way it is positioned.
Now I would have to think if in fact an aftermarket external oil color was mounted somewhere, which I will be doing on the stroker motor I’m building soon.
Then all four cylinders would run equal. As in temperature. I hope that made sense lol
Bravo
My community shirt is on its way
Outstanding! Thank you so much for the support I truly appreciate it.
nice video.
Thank you Jim!
Nice video. 👍
Thank you so much my friend!
@@SladesVWBeetle Are you going to do a video on installing the fan shroud with the flaps and fine tuning the thermostat/rod in place? I don't see many videos on this subject. I know how to do it, but others may not.
Hello, how can i contact you about the product sponsorship?

i know someone else has asked but can it be cleaned in your new sonic cleaner:)
I would definitely not put it inside the ultrasonic cleaner.
When are you heading up to NH?
I really wish I could soon, that’s for sure.
@@SladesVWBeetle Someone ‘I know’ might have a place for you and yours to stay, plus can make mean burgers and dogs. Let me know ;)
@@internetkilledthevideostar Thank you I truly appreciate that. I have a friend up in New Hampshire that I promised him I would visit as soon as I got time.
Of course not. The Bozo that restored it last seemed to think VW engineers didn't know what they were doing.
Be careful folks. I ruined one with a heat gun! My '69 had the Thermostat and flaps removed and was running J-Tubes. Needless to say, it had been running hot. Low compression and lots of blow-by. I'm about to order a fresh rebuild. The engine starts and runs OK, but lacks power. I'm hearing some whining and a little rumble, too, so I'm not going to just do a top end job. I wanto start fresh, with everything there and take good care of it. No more 20w50, either.
Blue print the oil pump also.
Since you were running J tubes, were you running the industrial shields? For the proper airflow for cooling?
I’m just curious.
Why no 20w50?
I didn't set this up. When I bought it it had J tubes, no thermostat or flaps. Back in the day, a lot of people thought you didn't need what the VW engineers developed to cool the engine.
