I have the leather bound Day book but not the first paperback you show. From what you show they seem tomfill completely different functions. The Day book links to other myths and legends that inspired Tolkien while the first book looks more comparable to Robert Foster's "Complete Guide to Middle Earth". That would be an interesting comparison video...
