- Have you been ordering bearings incorrectly? On this episode of Jay's Tech Tips, Jay goes over engine bearing size and goes over some common terminology.
- Авто та транспорт
Oversize and undersize is mixed up too often when discussing engine bearings. Undersize is the most common with a bearing being thicker on the inside diameter to make up for metal removed from a crankshaft journal. Oversized bearings are thicker on the outside diameter to make up for metal removed from the block housing bore.
Yeah he said it backwards and I was like “Uhhhh, think you said that backwards bro”
Yeah, this dude can't explain his way out of a paper bag.
I absolutely love these Tech Tips!
Sweet this actually really helped me. Thank you.
Thank you best info on explaining bearings on the internet so far
This was a great video, I learned a ton about what's been confusing me, thanks man!!
Love these videos. So well done.
Couldn’t find an answer for what a standard bearing was, thanks so much for this video. Everything is well explained.
Awesome, great timing as mines needing rebuilding soon! rookie here but man these guys are pros, interesting stuff!
Jay again! Awesome!
To the point, crash course education. Fantastic +👍🏼
The H and HX part was very helpful. Thank you.
I once read a Car Craft or Hot Rod magazine article back in the early sixties about a circle track racer that made what he called a "precision rod bearing". He modified the bearings by removing bearing material down to the shell and up from the parting line approximately .500" on both sides of the upper and lower shells. He then reduced the bearing clearances to approximately .0007 to .0008" and ran light oil. I don't remember if he also ran a high volume pump. People were skeptical, but he said he never had a bearing or engine problem and then just decided to stop talking about it because of all of the negative feedback he was getting.
Great teaching material and presentation!
What would your recommendation be for bearing brand and clearance for BMW M5 e60?
Thanks in advance!!!
Great explanation thank you so much
Good video. Makes me happy to see that i have been ordering correctly. It also clears up some conflicting information that is often found on forums. Guys and gals don't just take everything you read on forums to heart. Always confirm from different sources if its something important.
Best video l have watched so far👌
Nice explanation video!!!
thank you youve cleared so much up for me
@thatracingchannel could talk about compression an ring gap next video. an what happens when going up in compression. I would be interested in listening to what you guys have to say. Anyways great video like always keep them coming!
This guy and his straight face...
i still cant figure it out. i have a d16y8 engine block with a d16z6 crankshaft. do i go with standard sized bearings? what if the clearances are too large or too small? do i get a different bearing size?
ie: i use standard bearings for crank journals, i plastiguage, and it comes out to .0025, how do i get it to .0015-.0020 which is service limit for d series honda motor bearing clearance? that would be loose. do i use on standard, one hx size? which goes on too, which goes on bottom? how much would it thin out the clearance by doing so?
i really would appreciate if someone could answer. im stuck
do you guys have also worked on a 2jz GTE VVT-I ?
What about when the crank is stock and the mains have been alignment bored? (ie) when you get the RS billet main caps?
When should someone use narrow bearings and can you use them on stock non machined crank?
great vids more plz
Hi Jay what assembly lube would you recommend using I'm about to start rebuilding my 2jzge with gte internals just want to get something good for that initial start up.
Thanks!
if you mix and h an hx bearing, does it matter where each one goes?
Would it be safe to use standard size bearings if the crankshaft wasn't machined but just lightly polished. 94 s10 2.2 liter
Hey Jay my name is Wayne I have a question for you guys I'm looking into buying a lightweight knife edged crankshaft it says the journals were refurbished to 0.25 would that mean the main bearings need to be 0.25mm undersized or oversized??
hey thank i have 5 1990 ford taurus sho engine and i need main and rod bearing for these engine is there a place who can make them custom if so where thank you
andre calgary canada
Great video. my Mechanic asked me to check to see if I can find a 10 Toe or a 20 Toe pistons and I was so confused.
Hi Jay, are you still able to answer a question please on dti reading ?
I have a 22re need to replace bearings has crankshaft still on the engine the engine has over 180 Thousand miles What size do you recommend
Does Real St use B.G automotive fluids?
thanks for clearing that up for me was wondering why my clearance was so tight ordered the wrong one oops
best explanation ever, only the clearance you me radius i guess
who make the best quality bearing?
Can't find oversized aftermarket main bearings for a BBC anywhere
smooth beat
My machine shop said they would micro polish my crank to help " reduce friction " but would that require me to need bearings that are not standard ?
my engine has not been damaged. Just rings went out on my number 1 piston so i ordered cp pistons and rods. I havent ordered the bearings yet because im going to wait until the machine shop finishes their work on the crank. Im assuming since its a polish its not going to be taking much material off if any. But just figured id ask.
what did you end up doing
Our ford modular bearing clearances are tight even under boost. We run. 0011. 0025 clearance even at 1000 hp.. 0018 is the sweet spot for most 4.6/5.4/5.0 engines
My engine spun a bearing and want to replace the all the bearings with new ones but unsure what size to get. Can anyone help?
@ 3:58 your talking about crank being machined and that for .010” removed you would use a. .25mm… you image shows a .025mm need to fix that , getting people confused.
So I should go with hx for boosted Honda with no work done to the crank
3:23 Helms service manual, Honda Engine. Good choice haha
Throwing out common sense for the silly customers lol great video!
So a 0.025 has less clearance? Wtf !? The ammount of people on bimmerworld that put them thinking they offered MORE clearence is crazy. Wtf
hoping someday soon american standards follow the metric ones!
The convertion ratio for imperial sizes to mm is:
.001" --> 0.0254 mm (0.025 mm could be ok)
.010 --> 0.254 mm, not 0.25 mm (-0.004 mm in diameter difference)
.020 --> 0.508 mm, not 0.50 mm (-0.008 mm in diameter difference)
.030 --> 0.762 mm, not 0.75 mm (-0.012 mm in diameter difference)
The bearigrs were produced with a wall thickness tolerance of 0.006 mm (about .00025")
Regards from Argentina!!
No one use plastigage anymore?
+Lucky Bob not that accurate
What would a home engine builder use to measure the gap then?
+Lucky Bob www.gereedschapland.nl/repository/product/full/mi103137.gif We use this. I think somewhere in the video you can see that they use this tool too
shawnzzzzz13
don't believe you understand what gap I'm referring too.
+Lucky Bob what do you mean then because Jay is talking about bearings
That supra channel/real st

V8's please
can a garage builder get a shout out TRC???? HAW 1320 VIDS
5 persons need new bearings!
9 hours later and it's 6 people now LMFAO
20 hours later 7 people need new bearings
PLASTIC GAUGE....?? JOURNAL clearance
Plasti gauge
+Spoonzaza ... is there a down side to use the plasti gauge?????
+HAW 1320--- High Altitude Whips CEO
Not that I know of. But I used to use it with my when I was younger and watched him rebuild motors. I'd say it's accurate. But for the most part you just have to ensure that the bearings and journals are clean and free of any FOD (Foreign object debris). Assembly in an extremely work environment. We haven't had any problems tho. Everyone will say there's better out there but plasti gauge is good enough. I'm actually in the process of assembling an engine and I plan to use plasti gauge
+Spoonzaza nice...thanks for the 411. I have always used it ... I used it when me and my pops built my SBC BMW Blown 325is.... check my vids to see it if you like ...... I just hit my goal for the car I wanted 10s out here at our altitude ..(swings from 6k to 9000 DA) I hit 10.80@133 on street tires and DA that pass was 7400da...... feeling pumped
Say what? :-)
if ur crankshaft is shaved then u will need an undersized bearing
he got it all wrong
Ah don't worry one day the USA will catch up with the rest of the world and go metric..........
