Roger Waters' relationship with David Gilmour was so distant in the period before Pink Floyd's celebrated reunion at Live 8 that Waters had to ask organizer Bob Geldof for his former bandmate's phone number.
While Geldof had been persistent in trying to broker peace between the pair, he'd hit an initial roadblock with Gilmour - who once referred to a possible detente as something akin to "sleeping with your ex-wife." Waters then interceded. Ultimately, the event's mission - Live 8 was meant to raise awareness of poverty, debt & the AIDS crisis in developing nations - led to one of music's most improbable remarriages, though only for a single evening.
"The moment was bigger than those bad feelings," David Gilmour told the Associated Press in the days leading up to Pink Floyd's July 2, 2005, appearance. "Any squabbles Roger & the band have had in the past are so petty in this context, and if reforming for this concert will help focus attention, then it's going to be worthwhile."
And so Pink Floyd's classic-era lineup - Gilmour, Nick Mason, Waters and Richard Wright - took the stage for the first time since a 1981 concert at Earl's Court in London and, alas, for the last time ever.
"It's great to be asked to help Bob raise public awareness on the issues of third-world debt & poverty," Waters enthused as the day drew near. "The cynics will scoff. Screw 'em! Also, to be given the opportunity to put the band back together, even if it's only for a few numbers, is a big bonus."
By all accounts, everyone was on their best behavior as three days of pre-show rehearsals unfolded. "There were times when Roger was struggling to not get bossy, & I was struggling to keep being bossy," Gilmour said at the time. "I saw how arguments could have happened, but we aren't at each other's throats anymore. Getting rid of that acrimony has got to be a good thing. Who wants to have that fester in your mind the rest of your life?"
Still, there was the matter of a set list. And it was there where the former bandmates - two decades after an ugly legal battle over the rights to the Pink Floyd name - once again clashed.
Gilmour said, in a 2006 interview. "The songs that Roger wanted were not the ones I thought we should do. The arrangements of the songs were not the way Roger wanted to do them. But I kind of insisted."
In the end, Pink Floyd were restricted, like all of the other artists performing at Live 8, to a short, 20-minute set. Even a reunion 24 years in the making was only a mere portion of the larger production. So the band settled on four songs: "Breathe" and "Money" from 1973's The Dark Side of the Moon, "Wish You Were Here" from the 1975 album of the same name and "Comfortably Numb" from 1979's The Wall, Pink Floyd's penultimate recording with Waters. They left aside music from the two Gilmour-led Pink Floyd albums that followed the acrimonious split.
Waters made reference to the band's original leader, the late Syd Barrett, even as he framed the larger reasons Pink Floyd had decided to reunite. "It’s actually quite emotional to be standing up here with these three guys again, after all these years - standing to be counted with the rest of you," Waters said amid the opening strains of "Wish You Were Here." "Anyway, we're doing this for the people who're not here - and particularly, of course, for Syd."
They finished with a somewhat awkward bow, but only after reaffirming Pink Floyd's former power & grace. After Pink Floyd's catalog saw a stunning 1,300 percent sales increase after Live 8, Gilmour announced that he would donate the proceeds to charity.
Beyond that, Gilmour said Live 8 gave his younger children an opportunity to see their semi-retired old man in a whole new light. "They now understand that I'm not just this bum who lazes around the house, cooks them supper and takes them to school,” Gilmour told Newsweek.
He also had to deal with renewed questions about a larger-scale reunion with Waters. Pink Floyd's core four were reportedly offered as much as $150 million for a U.S. tour. “It’s completely mad," Gilmour said back then, "and we won’t do it. The idea for Live 8 was a one-off.”
Waters appeared amenable, but ultimately turned his attention to what would become a blockbuster multi-year solo presentation of The Wall. "David is completely uninterested," Waters told the Associated Press. "After Live 8, I could have probably gone for doing some more stuff, but he's not interested."
Wright's death on Sept. 15, 2008, seemed to put an end to any talk of such matters. Pink Floyd released a final album, 2014's Endless River, built around older tracks featuring Wright, while Waters continued work on solo projects. "I think Live 8 was probably it," Waters told the BBC. "And Live 8 was so beautiful, and Rick obviously was still with us then. If that's the way we draw a line under Pink Floyd, so be it. I won't be unhappy about that."

*Lyrics*
*Breathe*
Breathe, breathe in the air
Don't be afraid to care
Leave but don't leave me
Look around, choose your own ground
For long you live and high you fly
And smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry
And all you touch and all you see
Is all your life will ever be
Run, rabbit, run
Dig that hole, forget the sun
And when at last the work is done
Don't sit down, it's time to dig another one
For long you live and high you fly
But only if you ride the tide
And balanced on the biggest wave
You race towards an early grave
Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
And when I come home cold and tired
It's good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells
*Money*
Money, get away
You get a good job with more pay and you're okay
Money, it's a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
New car, caviar, four-star daydream
Think I'll buy me a football team
Money, get back
I'm alright, Jack, keep your hands off of my stack
Money, it's a hit
Don't give me that do-goody-good bullshit
I'm in the high-fidelity first class traveling set
And I think I need a Lear jet
(That's what I need)
Money, it's a crime
Share it fairly, but don't take a slice of my pie
Money, so they say
Is the root of all evil today
But if you ask for a rise, it's no surprise
That they're giving none away
Away, away, away
Away, away
*Wish You Were Here*
So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell? Blue skies from pain?
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil? Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees? And hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change? Did you exchange
A walk-on part in the war
For lead role in a cage?
[Acoustic Guitar Solo]
How I wish, how I wish you were here
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fishbowl year after year
Running over the same old ground, what have we found?
The same old fears, wish you were here
*Comfortably Numb*
Hello? (Hello, hello, hello)
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me
Is there anyone home?
Come on (come on), now
I hear you're feeling down
Well, I can ease your pain
And get you on your feet again
Relax (Relax, relax, relax)
I'll need some information first
Just the basic facts
Can you show me where it hurts?
There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move, but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child, I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain, you would not understand
This is not how I am
I have become comfortably numb
[Guitar Solo 1]
I have become comfortably numb
Okay (Okay, okay, okay)
Just a little pinprick
There'll be no more
But you may feel a little sick
Can you stand up? (Stand up, stand up)
I do believe it's working, good
That'll keep you going through the show
Come on, it's time to go
There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move, but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child, I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look, but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown, the dream is gone
But I have become comfortably numb
[Guitar Solo 2]
AWESOME!! ~:)
@@LibraSunRising777 Thanks babe!
I would have given anything to see this show, babe! Featuring some of my all time favorite songs, I can't help but think about how this band established itself as one of the greatest rock bands in the history of rock and roll! Remembering back to the days when Pink Floyd's music filled much of the time I spent listening to music, and their having sold more than 200 million albums since that time, was a pretty big part of why my every day musical life included them! Today, Comfortably Numb has become a song imbedded into my very soul for reasons we know are far beyond the original meaning of the songs lyrics. I absolutely love this band, and I for one, am delighted that you brought this to your wonder filled LIVE channel, Dan! What a great share, babe!
Heart Smiles * Tears * Luvin' Pink Floyd!! ~:) ~xox~D~:)
I wish we could have seen this show together, babe! It would have been the experience of a lifetime for sure. Although I must say, that was one heck of a crowd to contend with! LOL! They only had twenty minutes to play, and the songs they picked were perfect for the occasion. I wasn't into Pink Floyd as much as you in my younger years, which is hard to believe considering how popular the band was. In a way it's good because now I have a "new band" to explore in the present day when new great bands are hard to find. I definitely understand your love for the song Comfortably Numb in ways that no one else does. I'm so glad you enjoyed the share babe and as you know I will be trying to get more Pink Floyd shares up in the future despite being blocked on my Dark Side of the Moon share. We'll see what happens! I love you! xox ~ Dan
@@MysticRhythmsLive Like DT, PF has also given you a wider range of music to work with babe! Respectively, and together over our passing years married, we've synced quite well musically except for the hard rock stuff that gives me a headache! lolol~ One True Rocker in this family is more than enough for me! But that said, I'll always remember sharing Blue Powder w/you so long ago, and how that blew your guitarist mind considering my own channel content at the time! You were blown away! Needless to say, despite our respective tastes in music, and as I look up @ the walls in your man cave, I know your into music for life! I love that about you! I know too, you love that I can sleep through some of the time spent as you do your own thing! ROCK ON ((Dan!~:)) I love you! ~xox~D~:)
It won't be like any other because a this Pink Floyd ... thanks to each and every one of you for presenting these beauties ... God bless you... (RIP Rick Wright)....
Thank You , David Gilmore, Rick Wright, Nick Mason, and of course Roger Waters. They're never be another Pink Floyd! Love ya!!!
David and Roger, please put your differences behind you,
We are all a long time dead,
Hand shake and move on, have no regrets, life is too short❤️👍
Best band ever🔥
Roger Waters made this moment complete :-) Thank you Dan or this :-) Right into my PINK FLOYD playlist :-) An Extra "BIG" thumbs up :-) Tell Donna hello :-) ROCK ON!!!!!!!
You're right, Pink Floyd isn't really Pink Floyd without Roger Waters. I wish this could have been a full length concert, but they only had 20 minutes to do the job and they got it done! I'm glad you enjoyed the share, Fred...it's always a pleasure to hear from you. Donna says hello :-) I made the Mega playlist again! ROCK ON!!!!
Thanks guys for doing this 😂
I wish Roger and David would make up again despite how much they hate each other. All of Pink Floyd are essential to each other regardless of their differences. Just two lost souls swimming in a fishbowl...
It's definitely a shame that those two cannot come together in the name of great music. Sometimes you have to forgive and move on for the greater good. I think Roger Waters would have been up for a reunion tour but David Gilmore not so much. Great analogy, Reinhard! Thanks for commenting.
@@MysticRhythmsLive your address tells me your a Rush fan👍
You have impeccable taste,
RUSH AND PINK FLOYD are my top 2 fav bands followed closely by YES🤘🌹🇬🇧🇺🇸
I don't think they hate each other, I think they both realized that they don't get along when they work together. I actually think there is some love there still.
Yes I agree. Especially now that Rick is sadly no longer with us, Stu X
Sometimes the sum is greater than the parts but it needs ALL the parts to make it so. X
how are there only 3000 views of this?!? what emotion
There's another uploaded video with 36M views
Can you imagine the pressure they were under by the system
My favourite band playing tracks from my favourite album ‘Dark Side’, favourite guitarist, favourite track (money) ,and favourite guitar were present that night Dan.
I remember watching it live and the beginning of their performance seemed to be delayed for ages.
There was and still is a lot of bad feeling between Gilmour and Waters caused mainly by the previous sacking of Rick Wright by Waters.
Waters also tried to sue the remaining members for the use of the Pink Floyd name.
Short set - and I thought they picked some brilliant tracks - Rick Parry, the saxophonist, was the original player from the Dark Side album.
Seen Gilmour twice (one was the best concert that I have been to) and Waters once.
Dave Gilmour donated the sale process of a house to a housing charity £3.5m from memory and the sale of part of of his guitar collection achieved $22m or so for charity.
The Strat and the acoustic guitar that he played that night have both gone to an American businessman.
I still get goosebumps when the 7/8 timing in Money goes to 8/8.
Brilliant upload and thanks again Dan.
I had you in mind when I decided to get the Live 8 DVDs that this show was on, BD. I had a feeling that you had most likely seen this before, but not from here! LOL! It's cool that you were able to watch it live; I can only imagine your anticipation waiting for the show to begin especially with it being a reunion concert. It's obvious that there was bad blood between Gilmore and Waters, and such a shame that things couldn't have been worked out for the sake of the fans. They only had 20 minutes to do their set like all of the other bands, and of course there was disagreement between the two as to what songs should be played. I believe Gilmore won out and the songs he chose were perfect for this gig.
I wish I could have seen Pink Floyd in concert as that would have been tremendous. Gilmore would be my next fave in line and then Waters.
I appreciate the info on Gilmore's donations. You know a lot more about this band than I do, BD! I still have so much to learn about so many bands, many of which you have extensive knowledge of, so I always appreciate your input!
It sounds like you're starting to understand a bit of music theory, bro! That's great! Pretty soon I'll be learning from you!
BTW, there were two songs by The Who on these DVDs ( Who are You and Won't Get Fooled Again) and I was really hoping to get them up, but they got blocked worldwide by UA-cam. I was thinking of you again LOL! Man, I was bummed when I saw that they were blocked!
Thanks so much for commenting my friend. I'm glad you enjoyed (my version) of this show. Stay safe!!!

I have a little knowledge of a lot of bands and artists Dan rather than a lot of knowledge about one.
I read about the 7/8 timing years ago and I believe it was quite revolutionary for the time.
Catch up with you soon Dan.
Thanks for everything.
@@bd5933 So you know a little bit about everything and a whole lot about nothing? LOL! I'm just the opposite, I know a lot about a few bands and a little about many bands. We make a good team, right?
7/8 timing is definitely revolutionary for a band like Pink Floyd, who from my knowledge usually stayed within the standard 4/4 beat. That song is so cool, I love it! I have a feeling that Gilmore had to work out how to sing that song over the 7/8 parts. He does a fantastic job doing so, I might add.
@@MysticRhythmsLive
Over the years, David has gone from singing this track to almost speaking/shouting it as he has aged and his voice has diminished.
He’s always been one of my favourite guitarist/vocalist.
I was there in 1977 at the Animals concert in Ft. Worth Texas on a school night!. Senior year of HS was an incredible time with so many wonderful bands playing their best music. Animals was a masterpiece concert with quadraphonic speakers surrounding us with the lasted sound innovation. The stage had a huge movie screen with tripping animation. A small hint of chocolate mescaline made the whole experience life-changing for this 18-year-old.
so happy you were able to live that, must have been truly special.
Any of that chocolate left? Just a thought …. S X
Very very good.. 🎶🌻😍 🇮🇩
There is no one to blame
One of the most unique band's ever ,The Closes I heard of There music ,was cover Band Mechanic ,(they are and my opinion The Best Cover Band To Date (Bristol) Ct Ct,
Best group
You have the chance to reunite Pink effing Floyd for the last time ever in history and you give them 20 minutes... 🤦♂
Not sure what you are talking about... they had a minute more than Velvet Revolver and the Scissor Sisters 🤣
Imagine the boat load of money they were offered to tour after this??
I cant imagine
It's truly sad they couldve been a viable band together but refused to.
Let's remember them as they were when they were young. I just think that Rock music and old people don't go well together. Unless you're Iggy Pop maybe.
I mean they were...for several amazing albums... Especially between 75 -79 ... dark side, Animals, The wall. 🤷 They made the best of what they could and those songs will live on forever!!
