This scene is absolutely magnificent in the film. It got my tears. Meryl Streep is so amazing, she gave this song a whole new life, so touching. That gratitude for love, for life, and the happiness chasing her dream. That's wonderful.

MrSimoleones Why would she get nominated for Original Song? This song was first recorded in 1972...it is FAR from qualifying as original. Did she actually write any of the songs in the film? That is who is nominated for Original Song, not the performers, the writers. I hope she sings better than this throughout the rest of the movie, some really shaky parts.

Meryl just may be the best living actor in the world. I would pay to hear her read a grocery list. This is the third movie in which she sings (Mama Mia and Into The Woods). Her voice is pretty good. The arrangement of Drift Away is just wrong -- not her voice - but the arrangement. The song, as written, is a gentle, soulful plea for Rock and Roll to free the soul and help the singer DRIFT away. The way this version play out is as a 1980s power rock anthem - think Queen, Bon Jovi, Journey, etc. Too many remakes of songs do not take the message of the songwriter into account and this is one of them. Ain't no drifting going on here.
