It sounds like you’re torn between being so grateful for your beautiful home and the vision for it that you have, and the length of time it continues to take to get there. Thank you for taking us along with you. Hang in there!
You have achieved so much in the six years you have been transforming your home. I'm sure the work is exhausting but seeing all the beautiful spaces you have already completed must motivate you to keep going. The coffee table is gorgeous, btw!
When you said you are less resilient that really rang true with me. I'm a bit older than you and have noticed over the years that my stamina and recovery times are much different than when I was younger. So far, I still recover and continue to do projects and garden, etc., but at a much different pace, with more breaks, and with lowered expectations! I have discovered I actually prefer a slower pace and it has made me more thoughtful about what I do. So, thank you for sharing your story. I really believe it helps us when we share ourselves with others.
Thank you for sharing your experience! I am learning to give myself permission to take (and need) more time and energy to deal with it all. It’s a process!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Marloes and Olav, the coffee table came out beautiful. The wardrobe is massive and really nice, I agree, it needs to be painted. I love the doors you found. I just want to tell you this, it's ok to feel overwhelmed, tired of changing and rearranging, and a little out of sorts after six years of renovations, it's hard to live in the same place as it's going on. Your house is coming along, the end result is so worth it but never apologize for how you feel. I am really looking forward to what you have in store for the new year. Thank you so very much for sharing your journey with us. Love from N.Y.
I understand so much why you can be some time tired with the reno process and all the stuff you have to move from one space to another again and again.... It s the same for me with the constant reno. Of our house since 14 years. Anyway happy new year for you and your family. See you soon
You’ve done so much amazing things in those past years, it’s just normal to feel overwhelmed and treat yourselves with some breaks. Happy New Year to you and your family, Marloes🤎
You have accomplished so much in the past six years but it must seem like it will never end. It will and you will think "well that wasn't so bad". Then you will find something else to do. It is going to be a wonderful home, it is already an inspiraation to many of us who love seeing you each week. Hope you have a happy and blessed New Year.
Your kitchen is so lovely and cozy especially on a rainy day! I love what you did with the coffee table- it is perfect for that spot between the sofas. Can’t wait to see what you do with the wardrobe and the living room renovation! I know it’s stressful when one’s “nest” is in a state of flux, but it won’t last forever. The spaces you have finished so far are incredible and I’m sure give you much comfort in the meantime. Happy New Year to you and yours! 😊🎉
If you like the look of natural wood, as I do, without any paint or stains, next time put a clear temepered glass top on it. Use little shims under the glass so that it does not come in direct contact with the wood. I know, it's not the same, but it does work, and gives you the natural look without the fear of staining or scratching the wood. You guys have done an absolutely marvellous job renovating the place; it looks gorgeous!!!
Lovely job on the coffee table 👏👏 Feeling overwhelmed, intermittently, I think is normal with renovations - and the never ending moving things around to accommodate the next focus. But your home is really looking gorgeous! Just don’t lose your vision (I know you won’t) and you’ll be fine. I’m on my tenth renovation, and I know the feeling well. Kudos to both of you!
Marloes. Thank you for sharing about the history of the Hospice Beaune. How fascinating! I checked it out online and saw a few photos of the hall you mentioned with the beds down each side with the red blanket! What an incredible place not to mention the outside with the amazing architecture. Again Thank you and Happy New Year and since we are still in the Christmas season, Happy Christmas.
I know you want it all to be finished but it’s great to see it all coming together, the wood stove looks so cozy. Love the doorway and I still love the tomettes…the salon will be amazing!
I call it "" WRECK-O-VATIONS "" almost 47 years of wreck-o-vations in this house and were still not done ! I hear your quiet pain my friend ,,,,,,no use complaining ! !! It'll get done eventually ,,,,,,,Happy 2025 to you all , keep well and enjoy your simple living along the way Cherryl from Canada
Thanks! Hanging in there and keeping the focus on the vision 😁 We make sure we don’t burn ourselves out and to take breaks, go on holidays, spend time with our family, be here for our boys… it is so tempting to let the building works go first or to keep pushing to get things finished but it is not the lifestyle we want. But oh how I wish it was all finished!’
Happy New Year! Feeling overwhelmed by living in a construction zone is very understandable. Maybe you can retreat to the finished and tidy spaces when it all gets to be too much!
I understand you and are impressed that you always shared such great content living in a building site, but still enjoying everything in life and having holiday rentals too. Your motivation is incredible . You are in your way. Happy New year ❤
Your home is beautiful and very cozy. Indeed, Renovating a house in France certainly presents its challenges, from navigating local regulations to dealing with the unique architectural styles. It's a rewarding but tough journey that requires patience and creativity!🥰Happy New Year! Welcome 2025! Greetings from Finland🥰
Such great progress but it does get weary living in a construction site! The living room will be so great and will become a great gathering place for your family and friends! The old doors are quite the find and they will beautifully disguise the ugly but necessary electrical panel! Happy New Year to all of you and Cheers!
I bought a farmhouse (kitchen) table many years ago and sawed off the legs to make it coffee table height. It’s a nice big table and has done its job perfectly for about 40 years.
I'm watching my way through your videos. Love the way you upcycled the coffee table completely love your style! I just spent a week in Burgundy and fell completely in love with the region. Keep doing your thing your home looks wonderful and warm xx Amanda
I admire your commited hard work! Whatever you did is beautiful. Even that temporary organized bedroom looked pretty! I believe it must be realy overwhelming live in renovations for such a time..I struggle with living in rentals for a year, while waiting for a new house..Whish you the best with all you need!
I love thrift stores. They help the planet but I would never change the coffee table. It was so pretty. Of course it turned beautiful again. The living room is great.
I just finished reading "Three" by Valerie Perrin. It was a good read and it''s translated into English; not sure about Dutch. Another fantastic book I read this month was "American Dirt" by Jeanine Cummins
You mentioned privilege. I hate the overuse of the word. You are privileged because you have worked hard. You have earned your privilege through your tenacity, work ethic and your values of hard work and not relying on systems to take care of your needs. Yes there is poverty in the world. But please don’t put yourself and the accomplishments of your hands down.
I think it very mature of her to realize her privilege. Just because you work hard and have good values does not mean you have not experienced privilege in your life. Where you were born, your access to food, water, education, healthcare a stable society is all privilege. Even if we don’t choose it, it does exist. But by knowing this we can be humble and grateful. Appreciating and using privilege does not mean you are abusing it. In fact I am sure it creates empathy within us for those who are struggling or have struggled. Living in uncomfortable space and working and moving things constantly is good experience to relate to others and problems in the world around us.

If you use tonkinoise oil you won't get a darkening of the wood and you won't get the problems associated with varnish (chipping and flaking)
