Hello from Texas! I’m so pleased to find so many young people buying and restoring older and historic homes. The skills you are learning are of great value and will serve you both well throughout your lifetime. My father was a custom home builder and one of my late brothers did restoration woodworking in many historic buildings throughout our state. You both are doing a superior job in your home, those kitchen cabinets are amazing, my favorite style, also. I know getting the drawers and cabinet doors to fit so well is not the easiest and is a testament to your skills. My husband and I physically built our home, all of it except the heating and air. We made a lot of mistakes since it was before utube and my father was aging. The experience made us a team, not just in working together, but in how we managed our finances and family. What you are doing to your home is wonderful, I’m enjoying seeing the outcomes of your projects, so far amazing. I also love seeing the building of young partnerships in this crazy world.
This is such a touching message, thank you for taking the time to share and thank you for your kind words about our home. Yes the fitting of the cabinet doors/drawers was not the easiest, especially for our amateur skills. Your home sounds amazing and I can't imagie having to do everything before youtube was a thing! Well done.
Your house is so charming, you are doing an incredible restoration bringing back lost features and turn it to it's glory!!!I adore France, the architecture and the chic era!Thank you for sharing,I"ll stay tuned...Merry Christmas 🎄❤
How beautiful! You can make the crown moldings deeper / wider - down the wall by adding below it with a gap - even just a half round added 2/3”s below and paint to the half round and it creates an illusion of a larger crown moldings - so lovely and happy for you!! 🎉
M. Kevin McCloud de Grand Designs serait envieux!....I love the Greco-Roman waving arms during the kitchen build. This is a fabulous restoration performed by two talented artisans. Looking forward to seeing the next phase upstairs.
I'm impressed with how resourceful you've been with your renovation. You're creating a very beautiful home which showcases your talents and style. I look forward to seeing the rest of your renovation. Happy Christmas from the North of England!
Your design choices are fabulous and the skill and talent you have for the woodworking and finishing are enviable! I will be following your progress with great interest.
I’m a deVOL kitchen fan, as well. When I saw your kitchen I honestly thought they had designed and built it for you… which is my way of saying, I am impressed! Beautifully done for your first (?!) woodworking project! 💖
I stumbled upon your channel today...amazing! So much great, honest detail and work. Your kitchen built ins , in particular, are terrific...DeVol, indeed!!!
Lovely home…it may require patience to restore your home and locate furnishings but the finished product will be worth the wait so enjoy and make beautiful memories
You two are doing a fantastic job bringing this gorgeous home back to its glory....I just subscribed and will be watching your beautiful transformations.....Merry Christmas!
You young people have done an amazing amazing job so far and that is going to be one beautiful home when you are finished. I live in the USA but love the architecture of France and Europe, love the history of the homes and watching them being renovated so I am subscribing. That kitchen is amazing, you did an excellent job on those cabinets and I love the color on them. Love the entry floor and honestly all of your choices, you are so fortunate to own it and have the skills to do most of the renovation yourself. I am excited to follow your progress. Happy New Year!
I am impressed! Such a young couple and to be so courageous, talented and determined. I wish you the best of luck. I love the facade of the house, the interior style and I know this will be a beautiful and warm home. Merry Christmas!
I'm a decorator (just retired after 51 years). A tip for you. I noticed some seams showing in the lounge. When you have called dark paper that shows white seams. When it's dry, get a dark emulsion, and use your finger to rub the emulsion into the gap. Wipe it off horizontally straight away, doing it lightly with a damp sponge. Washing it after every wipe. Then your seam will disappear. If you need any advice, just ask.
We could let you both do a house for us without us seeing it till it was finished and we’d love it !! Fair play to you both , you’ve put your all into it ❤
You two are very thoughtful in your design and the home you're creating is a beautiful reflection of that. I look forward to seeing what you accomplish in 2025. Happy holidays from western Canada.
Very experienced restoration glad to see interior decorator selection of tiles furniture and simple antique inspired decor.now it is comfortable for living.God Bess you all.
I love some of the vlogs out there which feature les Chateaux. But really... if I had the energy, resources, opportunity I would much prefer to make a home in what I learned today is called une Chartreuse. (The blue of the door was definitely worth keeping.) So I will see how things go with your projects too. Enjoyed the tour! Merci.
We too love the chateau renovation but for living in it does seem rather impractical. Our small house has more than enough renovation work to keep us occupied!
The facade is extraordinary & will be astonishing after a power wash & restoration in future. Yr interiors r surprisingly bright a great plus. Congrats on yr lovely interiors. Looking forward to seeing a lot more on yr progress in the future.
What a stunning transformation. I love everything you have done thus far:). Great choice for the tiles in the entranceway. It is always so nice to see a young couple with great taste and a love for old buildings. Wonderful job, I am intrigued as to how it will look when all done, so have subscribed to be on this journey with you (for me of course it will involve no work).
I live in Cognac and there are many empty lovely houses here. Along the road from is a lovely large villa, 160 m2 plus garage and drying room and even has a palm tree in the garden and tall stone walls and wrought iron gates. For sale at 240K !! I would snap it up in a minute, it needs redoing inside but there are bargains to be had in the area. Your house is lovely, when I was younger I fell in love with a similar house but it lay empty not for sale and slowly fell into bad repair.
I too Subscribed, less than halfway through the video❤!!! This seems like less work than a Chateau but only because of it's size! I'm sure it's every bit as much work, but when it is caught up, it will be more manageable and home like than a Chateau or manor house with estate grounds❤!!! From what they have done so far, it will be a showcase, something to be very proud of😊!!!
Thank you - some much appreciated context for the lovely videos posted previously. I know you probably already have enough of your lives on the internet, but I would be grateful to know a little bit about your own histories: English, and French who has lived in England? And how you came to decide to live here and what skills, background etc you bring to the project and how you plan to live in the region. Again, it gives some context to viewing the wonderful work you are doing so carefully and thoughtfully in your home, whose visual and musical approach I enjoy so much. Peace and joy this Christmas, and I look forward to seeing your progress next year.
Thank you for your kind words and interest. Great feedback, hopefully we’ll shed some light on these questions soon in an upcoming video. So nice to have you with us for our renovation journey, have a wonderful Christmas
Yes, throughout the video I didn't catch either first name! It would have been nice to have an introduction since it's kinda new, just a little "Hi I'm Mike & this is my wife Jayne." Enough for the moment, until a Q&A video❤...
I am truly envious - you have done a great job. Interested in the location in a slightly more specific way than SWFrance if possible. Just a heads up that drywalling the angles and ceilings in your attic will be more difficult than the vertical lower floors. The wood there now is attractive and in any event if you are building out insulation it is a good substrate and probably qualifies as an R2 or more. It seems like a pain to remove old wood surfaces and moldings but it is doable. I have found when adding up the time and expense, in the end it is also more economical. Whatever you do I'm sure it will be exceptional. Finally if there is a casting call for a James Dean look-a-like consider responding.
Hello , I would not recommend to paint in blue a north facing room. My boy bedroom is north facing and in light blue but he is complaining that he feels ‘cold’ and lights it with several lamps with warm light color. If you want a cozy feeling maybe choose something warmer. It is what I will do for my boy. Great renovation and a lot of work done for a very nice result. Congrats
Thanks for the tip, yes the designs we’ve made currently feature a blue but we’re thinking something a bit more like a deep maroon or green. We’ll need to do a few colour tests before we settle on a colour
Thank you so much for sharing! It sounds a lot like what we are currently doing at our place in Normandy… I was wondering if you would link to your paint colors etc. I love you selections! ❤🎉
Thank you, our paint choices are all from farro’s and ball. Although we got the shades mixed from a local paint store and did not purchase from F&W direct so as to save some cash: 1. Wimborne white is the white we use 2. Old white for the hallway 3. Eddy for the kitchen 4. Lichen for the bathroom
Thank you, it wasn’t super obvious from the video, but will become apparent from future videos. Essentially the previous owner added the closet to the outside of the building/facade but failed to keep the original sandstone. Instead building it out of concrete and asbestos. This meant that it was not only dangerous but ruined the original 18th century facade. We removed it and restored the sandstone on the back of the house.
I think if you want to buy a house in the countryside in France, if you save well, you can afford something similar with most jobs. However be prepared to do a lot of work yourself. We’re lucky that we both work in tech and have well paid jobs that help us afford a house in a town. However we purposely chose somewhere that needed some work to be able to afford a place which was a little nicer but we could grow into as we renovated
New to your channel!!..absolutely a stunning home!! Just wondering what a home similar to yours in France would cost?.. what price range are we looking at?..thanks...Connie from Canada 🇨🇦😊
It really depends on the location of the house, for example you can get a large 200 sq meter house in the countryside for less than 200k (eur). Considerably less if it has lots of work to do. Townhouses are more depending on which town and quarter they are in. In Bordeaux it would be hard to find a townhouse like ours for less than 350k, but can be done depending on the state of the property
Unfortunately the stone is too fragile to pressure wash, we need to employ a specialist laser cleaning service to clean it. This is a bit out of our price range at the moment
Thank you. The windows at the back of the house are black as they are new windows that replaced openings that were beyond repair and we thought the black went better with the stone and the colour scheme at the back. The white windows are for the front of the house which we cannot change shape/color as they are protected.
Its a beautiful house but that aluminium Windows on the front side of the house its an absolutly no go, l would remove it and put wood windows which would suit much better with the beautiful front door.
The windows at the front (white windows) are wood. Only the windows as the back are aluminium (black). We love the wood but could not afford to put it everywhere.
Ooh no, hate those over the bed cupboards, so old fashioned, not in a good way, - wardrobes, much better 👍❤️🇬🇧🙏🙂 lovely house though, you have both worked hard.
It's a renovation indeed, not a restoration. You've turned the place into a semi-modern building. There's always tough choices to make because of building regulations, energy efficiency etc. But you have invested wisely by choosing "old" new tiles, wallpaper and paint.
Wait, first you said you ripped up tiles from the 70s (more likely the 80s).Then you said you ripped out the original tiles. We’re the original tiles under the ugly tan 1980s tiles? Can you explain that? The replacement tiles are nice.
Why did you buy an old house, as you seem to be taking out all the original decorative elements, rejigging walls, covering beautiful stone. This is another thing that completely has me baffled. The glass bricks were more 1940s-50s maybe into the 1960s.
Sorry for the confusion, the “original tiles” are the beige tiles that we described as from the 70s. The original flooring is all wood (like the one in the bedroom) however unfortunately one of the previous owners covered the floor with concrete in the hallway, living room and dining room areas so they could add the beige tiles. We could not save the original wood flooring in this area as it was impossible with the concrete. With the walls, it is a shame to cover the original stone, however we need to do this to bring the insulation/heating code up to regulation and to actually keep the house warm in the winter. We refer to everything “70s” as this is when one of the previous owners did the remodel of the house which changed a lot of the original features (the house is from the 18th century). So whilst the glass blocks might look 50s in your mind they are from this period. We’re trying to do our best to update the house but keep restore some of the old grandeur. Thanks for your feedback
This is absolutely a labor of love ♥. I believe the original builders and laborers are looking down from heaven and giving this couple a thumbs up 👍.
Thank you, so nice 😊

I admire your love for your beautiful home, as well as your work ethic. Wonderful!
Thank you so much!
I love how you built the box frame around the very modern window to make it feel more original 🙌🏼
Thank you, it definitely needed it as it was too modern/bland before

Next Spring/Summer, power wash the bricks and the stairway. Cleaning will make a big improvement!

Great design. Lovely home. ❤
Glad you like it!
Beautiful!🥰🇨🇦
Thank you! 😊
Your craftsmanship is beautiful. I’m a bit surprised how very British the interior is for a French building.
Thank you, haha yes it is very much our taste but we do have a lot of comments from the neighbours about the Britishness of it!
WOW marvellous
We really appreciate it

Thank you for your words of wisdom, the house is based in Bordeaux
I love the house. The wall height would look best with a greater depth of moulding. Add on some more for a regal look.
Yes we totally agree but sadly we couldn’t find a bigger size from the stores close to us. Hopefully we’ll change them out in the future
@@restoringlachartreuse ❤
Love the floors
Is the bedroom insulated
Thank you, yes we insulated all the exterior walls as the house was very cold originally. Thankfully it was a success and is now very warm!
Hello , I would not recommend to paint in blue a north facing room. My boy bedroom is north facing and in light blue but he is complaining that he feels ‘cold’ and lights it with several lamps with warm light color. Lovely! I am curious about the exterior... Any plans for the garden?
Yes we’re working on the garden at the moment, we have big plans. The next video should reveal a bit more
Thank you so much for sharing! It sounds a lot like what we are currently doing at our place in Normandy… I was wondering if you would link to your paint colors etc. I love you selections! ❤🎉
Thank you, our paint choices are all from farro’s and ball. Although we got the shades mixed from a local paint store and did not purchase from F&W direct so as to save some cash:
1. Wimborne white is the white we use
2. Old white for the hallway
3. Eddy for the kitchen
4. Lichen for the bathroom
Love it🇨🇦❤️
Thanks ❤️❤️
amazing house and beautiful work!! i do wonder, why did you take down the walk-in-closet? did i miss the reason, as to me it seems logical to keep it
Thank you, it wasn’t super obvious from the video, but will become apparent from future videos. Essentially the previous owner added the closet to the outside of the building/facade but failed to keep the original sandstone. Instead building it out of concrete and asbestos. This meant that it was not only dangerous but ruined the original 18th century facade. We removed it and restored the sandstone on the back of the house.
Install a rolled styrofoam heat barrier on the roof. Cuts down the heat. Works great.
Good to know
Wow the chateau looks amazing! What job should a young person have to buy and restore such a house? 😻 I would like to be able to afford it too ❤
I think if you want to buy a house in the countryside in France, if you save well, you can afford something similar with most jobs. However be prepared to do a lot of work yourself. We’re lucky that we both work in tech and have well paid jobs that help us afford a house in a town. @@restoringlachartreuse thank you for your answer, I have a goal now 🥰
Great respect for DIY, especially for such a young nice couple. The only shame that you got rid of molding…
Thank you very much! We sadly couldn’t keep the orignal mouldings as they were too damaged
How many square meters does the house have? Beautiful renovation🤗
It’s about 120 square meters, thank you

The front, especially the steps could do with pressure washing. The front door needed caulking at the edge.
Unfortunately the stone is too fragile to pressure wash, we need to employ a specialist laser cleaning service to clean it. This is a bit out of our price range at the moment
Great job, beautifully finished projects. What are the dimensions of your bathroom please?
Thank you, the bathroom is 3m x2m
You’ve done wonderful work. Congratulations. Why are some windows white and some black in the interior? Will they eventually all be the same color?

Why not keep the stone wall as a nod to authentic and bring in some natural product to your modern decor
We needed to insulate all the exterior walls so this wasn’t an option unfortunately
Ooh no, hate those over the bed cupboards, so old fashioned, not in a good way, - wardrobes, much better 👍❤️🇬🇧🙏🙂 lovely house though, you have both worked hard.
Thank you
It's a renovation indeed, not a restoration. You've turned the place into a semi-modern building. There's always tough choices to make because of building regulations, energy efficiency etc.
But you have invested wisely by choosing "old" new tiles, wallpaper and paint.
Yes always tough to decide between restoring and livability
That's not a harp it's a lyre
Thanks for the correction
Everything a woman wants, a beautiful house and a very handsome husband to go with it lol
