    As a retired Green Beret with many of the same experiences as Clint, I would say that the most important thing he alludes to is being PREPARED and ALWAYS having contingency plans. when you plan to go into dangerous situations and environments, planning, anticipating what could go wrong, and attention to detail can literally mean the difference between life and death. The average person doesn't need to take it the the level we did, but you can apply the same mentality. I don't mean be a fanatical "prepper", but things like practicing changing a tire (this includes every driver in your household), never letting your cellphone battery run down, always have emergency equipment and supplies in your car, especially in the winter. I carry food, water, space blanket, waterproof jacket, lighter, knife, first aid kit, etc. Keep enough gas in your car. Avoid getting lost by mapping your route ahead of time. And have emergency numbers in your phone; not just 911, but roadside assistance, etc.

      Agreed, in fact in situations like that tragic fire with the pyrotechnics display at that rock concert many years back, god this is a “perfect” yet obviously horrifically tragic display of *exactly* what he’s referring to. 80% of attendees fled to the exact same door they came in with. Sadly, just as he described, this created a bottleneck and everybody was stuck there, or trampled, and very few escaped, the rest perished right there, after being stuck in that exact bottleneck *for the duration of the fire* never able to get through. Those who survived came in other exits (band members, employees) and the few that were either nearby or noticed that there was at least one visible exit door, with no bottleneck of a frantic mob. I’m sure there’s an “excellent” write up on how that tragedy went down, and sadly just how many alternative escape routes were widely available, yet unknown to 80% of people. Again, almost everyone will subconsciously head to the door they entered to get out, even in an emergency. The band, white something, white snake? Sorry I don’t recall but if you Google pyrotechnic fire club tragedy, it’s sure to come up. Couldn’t be a more clear example of why he harps on identifying exists than that tragedy.

I’ve never been attacked, but as a kid, I’ve seen many people in my neighborhood who have been attacked. I like to credit that fact that I’ve been okay for this long because I do my best to keep my wits about. And ultimately, if I do not feel absolutely safe, or that I could potentially escape or be able to defend myself, I just LEAVE. This rarely happens, but sometimes it better just to be safe than sorry.

    Unlike a SEAL or Green Beret, the average person tends to get freaked out, stressed out, and/or emotional when a crisis occurs. Like Clint said, that isn't the time to try to figure out what to do. Special Operations troops are often more calm during a stressful event because they thought about, planned for, and rehearsed what to do. Therefore, they can simply respond by assessing the situation and executing the plan. just the ability to calmly and rationally assess the situation is an invaluable skill, but it takes practice. You see paramedics/EMTs doing this at an accident scene to assess and treat casualties.

    My first BF I had when I was 17 taught me how to be highly perceptive & situationally aware. He was a 2nd degree tiquando black belt. I was with him for 5 years. Thanks to him I can't even shut it off if I wanted to. I especially notice people & cars. This skill has been so very valuable in my life in so many ways. One time I remember being at the fair & noticing a creepy guy was following me & my stepson around the fair. My BF at the time shrugged it off but when I split up to go with kegan to let him play a game the creeper trailed us, & watched us. I told kegan who was 11y.o to keep an eye on that man. He approached us & asked if kegan wanted the toy sword he was carrying around & I put my arm around kegan & declined his offer. He acted very strangely & I we walked away back to where my BF was. As we were leaving the fair we saw the police escorting that man out of the fairgrounds. I think kegan trusted me more after than incident. I hope he learned something about situational awareness that day.

    1) Find cover, not concealment.
    2) Identify primary threat, or any that are in my immediate area.
    2b) if no threat can be found is there a quick and safe way out? If so, use it
    3) If cannot escape, flat sights, even trigger squeeze.

      Ur tips are fine, Archangel. But u can't always carry a gun anywhere. U gonna have to use other means, such as improvised weapons and edged weapons. I for one also legally conceal carry a handgun. But, I also use other means to defend myself. And what if ur gun jams? Now what? Use it as a fuckin' club, that's what.

    • @kiran474
      @kiran474 5 років тому +46

      Tbh, let's say the shooter was still far away and you were trapped in a dead end area/room, then if you had duct tape and books on you, then you could quickly make body armour in time. I honestly think the body armour strat is the last option, since running and hiding should be the first thing you do. Also, if you were trapped in a dead end area with no escape routes or hiding places, then your option would probably be to fight the aggressor/shooter.. so if you have time to make body armour, then it might help protect your vital organs as you try to bring down the attacker.
