I'm 69 years old and I've had many lessons and watched many UA-cam videos. This is absolutely the best lesson I've EVER "had" to explain how the blues work. I know this pattern and can play it blindfolded but you have taught me how to correctly use it and it makes so damn much sense. THANK YOU. You sound English but I wish you were in Arizona so I could take lessons from you. Many thanks "mate".

Thank you, this helps me so much in my playing to XYZ backing track. Finding this video I subbed right away. I started playing a little over a year ago and I am now a practiced beginner lol. I am 58 and for some reason my brain (normally ready to absorb) does not memorize the fingerboard and notes as easily as say building an engine. So in my day to day noodling I can now more easily figure out where I am. The shapes work better for me to learn to play over a key and then as I progress knowing the notes is beginning to happen. I am restarting my lessons early in July so I can get serious about learning the basics again.

  • @lavenderchants6014

Yes! This is my own personal technique explained perfectly! You are the first person on UA-cam that I have seen who understands this concept.
I am a 58-year-old self-taught guitarist, and I discovered these patterns decades ago, but at first, I did not know why it worked, but my ears told me it had to be right.
Eventually, I learned enough theory to understand what was going on, but I have taught it to many people over the years without having to teach any more theory than you do in this video.
I would also add another little bit for those people that want to know how this relates to the modes because it is also very simple.
That last pattern you discuss that adds the B and F to the A minor pentatonic to get the C major scale is called the A Aeolian mode. The Aeolian mode will always get you to the major scale for the key that is 3 frets up from your blues root, aka... the Relative Major key.
If instead you added B and F-sharp, it would be the A Dorian mode (which now becomes G major, 2 frets down from the root, instead of C). You here this mode being used a lot by Clapton and Pink Floyd.
Finally, if you added F and B-flat you get A Phrygian, (which is now F major, 4 frets down from your root). This mode gets used in Metal a lot, where you have songs that repeat 2 chords that are a half-step apart.
So, without leaving the first box of A minor pentatonic, you have access to 3 commonly used modes and 3 different major scales, just by changing up which 2 notes you choose between F, F-sharp, B, and B-flat. The beautiful thing is that you don't really need to know what mode you're using because your ears will always tell you which notes sound right.
Of course, there is one other variation off of A that uses F-sharp and B-flat (the mirror opposite of your Aeolian pattern), but I can't remember what mode or key that is because I never use it, but I'm sure it is one.
Anyway, great video! I have subscribed to your channel.

Thanks for sharing! That last mode F# and Bb, could be considered a lydian dominant on C or G melodic minor (two of the most common ways to think about it.) Of course, there are are 7 notes in this scale (ABbCDEF#G) and as such there are 7 theoretical 'modalities' to it.
A jazz inverse (I don't know much about this one)
      Bb Lydian Augmented (spacey sound)
C lydian dominant (an absolute classic)
      D major minor (fun!)
      E minor locrian (theoretical naming)
      F# Superlocrian (nice sound)
      G melodic minor (OG)

If you want to make it perfect, add a second follow up video on why the pentatonic notes are more useful than the left out notes from the full major and minor scale notes. In other words what is the weakness of the left out notes and the strength of the kept notes.

I don't know why your videos haven't popped up in my feeds before, but now that they have, you have become one of my top three favorite guitar-skills teachers -- maybe the number one. You have excellent teaching skills and carry the topic all the way through the end, which means I don't have to search for other videos to get the rest of the story. I am pushing the second half of sixty years and am just starting to learn to play lead guitar for bluegrass, country, and Gospel after having played rhythm most of my life -- never needed to play lead before, but now I do -- life changes. Thank you.
