    This video was meant for all those who drooled at the G9, but went soft when seeing the price tag. Sure, in terms of specs, the G9 is clearly superior, but the Dark Matter is a more "well-rounded" (not in terms of curve!) monitor at half the price.
    Also, I made a number of mistakes, like...a ridiculous amount of mistakes on this video and apologize to you all. Thank you to those who called me out in a constructive way!
    - The Samsung CRG-9 is a HDR1000, 1000nit monitor, NOT an HDR400 with 600 nits. I honestly don't know how I effed this up, but thank you all! The CRG-9 also provides 10 bit depth up to 100hz.
    - All the monitors, minus the Dark Matter, use Freesync Premium Pro (the highest tier of Freesync).
    - Keep the constructive criticism coming!

      CRG9 and Odyssey G9 have the same color bit support.
      Both can do 10 bit at 100 hz, but have to either drop to 8 bit higher than that or use chroma sub-sampling

      Ok, you did talk about it. But the biggest focus about the G9 is the obscene performance with ghosting. Which is typically the weakest point for VA monitors. The specs here destroy not only every other VA monitor, but also most IPS and even high end TN panels including at low refresh rates. This performance is unprecedented and it is likely that it will ever get beaten as Samsung has stopped making VA and is now moving to OLED.
      I feel like you've completely missed the point as to why the G7 and G9 is starting to be regarded as the best gaming monitor that money can buy right now. It currently sits in top spot on Rtings too.

    I've been gaming on the Odyssey G9 for a week now and love it. I disagree about the more curved screen being less attractive. It makes everything so much more immersive in gaming and more convenient for multitasking without having to turn my head much. This is by far the best monitor I've seen in 45 years of my life.

    There is so much I love about this review; this is how reviews should be done. You cover a TON of stuff but you're so succinct which makes it so easy to consume and digest all the information you're giving us. The ongoing compare and contrast of the 4 big offerings in this space make it not only interesting but easy to position each option against whatever criteria viewers are bringing with them when they watch the review. Finally, you contextualise the info so it's not just numbers but give the numbers context e.g. 6:36 "10 bit colour... but who needs 10 bit colour?". This allows us to properly judge the value proposition of each product not by comparing numbers but the value it can bring to a consumer based on their use scenario. Seriously dude I watched this on my oculus and had to get onto the PC to express how impressed I was with this review. New sub. New fan. Keep going.

    4:32 That color banding one the left side of the screen is why you need 10 bit color. 10 bit color isn't just for photo editors, it drastically reduces banding.
    Also, 400 nits is probably all you need for productivity, but for gaming/movies its definitely not enough. Sure a full screen of 1000 nits will blow your retinas out, but with HDR peak brightness is used sparingly to add highlight detail so it doesn't blind you, just improves picture quality. Well, assuming there are enough local dimming zones to support it, otherwise it can just end up washing out the entire image.

      People don't get it.
      They don't realize the flat screen has distorted their brains perception of what should "look right".
      After using a highly curved monitor for a while, the flat ones look completely distorted, as they should.
      Your brain has to recalibrate to the correct angle after starring at the distorted plane of a flat monitor for years.
      "Normal" (curved) looks "distorted" to people because their brains have been trained to see it wrong for so long.

    for curvature ratings, they assume the monitor with the given curve is making a full circle. the "R" stands for "radius" and the number is the length of the radius, in millimeters, of that circle.
    So a 1000R curve means the curve forms a circle with a radius of 1000mm, or 1 meter.

    I've been really impressed with your in-depth examinations and unabashed statements in each review. I initially came to your channel after seeing the chair giveaway, but was pleasantly greeted with solid content across each video I've viewed so far. Even with some specs errors in mind (which you are quick to correct), it is so refreshing to view no-nonsense reviews for once. The product comparisons and focus on which audience is better suited for something is really helpful. I didn't even know Monoprice made premium monitors, and just by name, I might have discounted them before seeing this video. I don't need most of the bells and whistles in Samsung's G9, so this could quite likely work very well for my workstation once I am in a larger space.
    Speaking of your sentiment about curves being bad for creators, I think it's more of a problem for video editors rather than visual designers. Actually, I think having a more 'immersive' curve could improve productivity and flow by contributing to a more inclusive and engaging ambience. Perhaps you might think of it like playing a horror game on a flat monitor vs wearing a VR HMD? That said, I agree that it's probably better to have a clean overview of a flat plane for competitive gaming. The modest curve seems like a good compromise to me overall.
    With regards to video presentation, I think the monologue space (like shown in 4:25 to 4:31) is a bit dimly-lit. As such, it's a tad jarring revolving from that to lighter, or otherwise comparatively bright scenes and B-roll. Slight adjustments with gamma/exposure, or perhaps adding a soft warm light or two could balance this really well and improve visual flow overall. Maybe some cheap smart bulbs are the answer? You could be set for under $20 easily. In any case, hopefully my thoughts will be of benefit to you and your channel. I'm looking forward to seeing what you cover next!

    • @Ahnestly
      @Ahnestly  4 роки тому

      Hey this was really well thought out and well presented. Thank you for that. Even the criticism, wow, that was...amazing! I tried brightening up the background a bit in my current video, but I'm never happy with my set and appreciate the input. I just don't have a ton of space, so would love to add some lights in the back, but they take up more space than I have to give. Been eyeing some wall mounted stuff...

    • @ShinoBells
      @ShinoBells 4 роки тому

      @@Ahnestly You are very welcome. As mentioned before, LED RGB smart bulbs or strips could be a very versatile tool in helping with this. Most bulbs allow you to change not only the hue, but color temperature in Kelvin (so you can adjust for warmth/coolness as you need). I've used lights from Xiaomi (Yeelight), Reafoo, and Nueve&Five. Xiaomis were the most consistent, but Reafoos were more color-accurate. Govee has a very promising 2-pack of 10W/1000lm bulbs for $16 on Amazon right now, which are cheaper and brighter than my lights. Their RGB 'Dreamcolor' strips are definitely worth looking at too, since you can change individual LED segments on them (unlike most strips).
      Any products like these in some small low-cost light sockets would be very affordable and have minimal impact to your available space. There's no need for any big lamps if you just want to increase the ambient lighting in your scenes. I use my variety of lights every day, and they have proven to be quite impactful and convenient. Give it a shot!

      @Xsetsu 4 роки тому

      @@Ahnestly To be honest many people will try to tell you that a curve screws with their productivity or shot for video editing. I really think of lot of that is blown way out of proportion of hows the curve on a monitor works. It doesn't skew anything, not your aiming in games, not how you see a photo, or video. Not to mention our eyes self correct for most things, so much it makes little sense to me.
      Also the color calibration is actually really good right out the box for the G9.

    • @Ahnestly
      @Ahnestly  4 роки тому

      I mean, it does ruin things a bit. Like if I was editing a photo, I’d much rather be on a non curved monitor simply because the aspect ratio and the preview of the photo in full screen mode will look more or less similar to what I see in print or uploaded to IG or whatever. If you stretch that at 32:9 and then curve it to compensate, it’s just hard to understand what the finished product would look like. Now one might say well then just make the image smaller and don’t full screen it...but then what’s the point of buying a $2k 49” monitor? Me personally, I’m not a serious editor, but I could see that being a serious issue for creators. I’m curious to know how pro gamers feel about curves though

    • @Xsetsu
      @Xsetsu 4 роки тому +1

      @@Ahnestly Yes, but that's still stretching an image. A really different matter altogether. Just edit in the proper aspect and use the rest of the monitor for something else.
      It really doesn't affect gaming or editing of any sort unless you are trying to stretch things that shouldn't be stretched, which goes for gaming as well.
      Surprisingly, the support for 32x9 is not actually that bad. It's still about a 900k pixels short of 4k, if you really want to count it that way. I have had a couple of games where I needed a fov fix.
      The curve actually has more benefit for gaming. Having your outside peripheral vision closer means less head turning, easier to take in the whole screen, and really does feel more immersive.

    1000 mm is 1 meter. 1 meter is basically 1 yard, or 3 feet in "freedom units" so 1000R would be a 3 foot radius, 1800R would be about 7 foot.

    Plus the 1000R is suppose to match the human eye field-of-view and reduces eye strain because it better suits your peripheral vision when your fixation point being center of the screen in games the 1000R curve gets the rest of the screen into your peripheral view so you see it but not necessarily need to turn your head/neck like you would for a 1800R curvature. This does look like a good monitor feature wise though and the price is good. I just think I would go with the Samsung.

    10 bit color is for HDR. You need 10 bit per channel in order to avoid banding when having a HDR picture. Take a look at standard video on blu-ray and you will often see banding even when using standard SDR-picture. So HDR is meaningless without 10 bit (or more) per channel.

    Samsung changed my monitor, and now I'm very pleased with it! The image is great. The color saturation is amazing. In the game eFootball PES 2020, I had to turn off vsync because the image was lagging.It is imperative to use the eye saver mode, and the contrast of 20, then the eyes will not hurt. You can sit behind of the screen for 24 hours without problems!

    This monitor is more comparable to the CRG9 than the G9.
    Specs are similar. Freesync, 1800R curvature, same DQHD 1440p resolution, same 120Hz panel,
    But it doesn't even have the 600 nits, and 1000nits peak of both the CRG9 and G9.

    Great review! I pre-ordered the G9 and my order was canceled due to the manufacturing issues. I have yet to see any update from Samsung on when it will be rereleased. The lack of communication is really disappointing to me, and honestly, enough for me to look at different monitors. I get it, stuff can happen in the manufacturing process and I am not upset about that - it’s the sheer disregard to communicating with their customers. I REALLY appreciate you @Ahnestly for taking the time to research and make this video. If you want everything, the Samsung CRG9 is the best for the price (high as it is). But if you don't care about HDR, this Monoprice does seem like crazy good bang for the buck. I set my monitor with 3 modes (which you can assign to three buttons near the menu button) so I can quickly switch between Design Work, Gaming, and HDR. That way I can make full use of the 10-bit or the HDR or the Freesync.

    The 1000R doesn't warp lines in productivity at all - it is a misnomer - for a user who is dead centre everything is spot on. Whilst the Samsung C49RG90 does have a curve of 1800R, it's practically identical to the G9 in terms of spec barring 240hz and Freesync Premium. The C49RG90 is rated HDR1000 (1000nits peak brightness), Freesync 2, 120hz, QLED and G-sync compatible. I know this because I own both C49RG90 and G9.
    I understand you making a review about the monitor you have but why attempt comparisons without having the other monitors to hand, especially since your information is incorrect regarding the missing panels yet your sources are correct.
    Lines are straight for the user with G9 and the C49RG90 is a 1000nit monitor.

      So recommend you checking out the pinned comment where I clarify the mistakes. As for comparisons, youtubers are here to add value and sometimes, there’s more value in talking about a lot of products than just one, and I don’t think not having the product should limit you....otherwise, only channels with hundreds of thousands of subs with the budget could do those videos. I admit I made a lot of mistakes in this one but I do adrdress and learn from them. the topic of curved displays and whether they’re good for photo editing is still a hot debate, which is why I included it as a warning

      So even with 1800r, I've found I get thrown off with things when it comes to editing, especially when theres already distortion from using ultra wide lenses. I don't think I could use the 1000r for that stuff. I would love it for gaming though...since I'm not a pro, I couldnt care less about the curve! Lol

    • @peanuts.13
      @peanuts.13 4 роки тому +2

      1000r curvature forms a circle with radius 1m (1000mm), which also corresponds to the optimal (max) viewing distance, 1m, based on the natural curvature of the human eye. 1800r then means the optimal max viewing distance is 1.8m (less of a curvature), which is significantly farther. for gaming, if you want the best immersion, then you want the curvature that matches your viewing distance.

    Bigger color gamut does not equal better color accuracy. Actually it can equal worse color accuracy if you don't color manage properly or run non-color managed applications (it will look more vivid = over saturated, but not correct). Even worse, if you have a big color gamut like Adobe RGB but only 8 bit you will get more banding in gradients, since the outmost colors are furrther out in the gamut, so the "steps" between each color will be greater. For most cases around 100% sRGB will get you the most natural (as intended) colors.

      Those are the Lian Li Strimer Plus cables. Maybe I should do a walkthrough of my pc...one of these weeks when I'm worn out, I'll do that as an easy one!

    For someone who didn't use the G9 for creative work, what you said is 100% wrong. Since owning this monitor my creative work has jumped up in ease by a lot. You can do straight lines just fine. The curve helps a lot with your eye as well.

    • @Ahnestly
      @Ahnestly  3 роки тому

      I appreciate the feedback, but while I didn't own the G9, I did my research and a lot of people dislike curved monitors for creative work as it did mess with their lines. Based on your username, you use it for photos and video, but have you considered creatives who use CAD? Or use their monitors for architecture work? Just because you use it and it's fine for you doesn't always mean it's fine for others.

    • @alien1tech
      @alien1tech 3 роки тому

      @@Ahnestly You got a valid point there I didn't think about that other side of creative work like CAD users or architecture. Then you need to specify that. The majority of people that think creative work they think photo and video work which includes after effects. Because as for what I have seen this monitor works wonders for that. Just a helpful tip. 😊

    It looks nice but honestly I have been considering 4k. The only problem is the size of all the 4k high refresh monitors at the moment. Why the hell are they all 27 instead of 34. I just want a 34 inch 4k 100+hz screen but it seems to not exist yet. You would think it would be more expensive for the 27 inch over the 34 4k since the 27 needs a higher pixel density. I would be willing to drop a good amount on one but a 27 is just too small after getting used to larger monitors.

    • @Ahnestly
      @Ahnestly  4 роки тому

      Totalllyyy agree with this sentiment, but I think the 34" wouldn't allow for 4k, since the width is too wide. I'd love to get my hands on like a 32" or whatever the size would have to be that's larger than 27" 4k 144hz monitor. That would be saweetttt
