  • After the Vietnam War, France relocated a small group of 45 Hmong refugees from Laos to its overseas territory in South America, called French Guiana.
The Hmong people were fleeing persecution from the communists, because they were long-time allies of France and had fought with US forces.
Forty years later, French Guiana is now heavily reliant on the food that these refugees and their descendants grow in farms deep in the Amazon jungle. It’s said they are a true immigration success story, but this happy ending was not always guaranteed.
Film by Daisy Walsh, Tommy Chavannes and Jilla Dastmalchi.

Had A Hmong boss once. Her family fled to war to Tennessee and mainly do agriculture.
Her family is HUGE, I mean each family member has like 4-6 kids. She also has 4 kids to support while working as a single mother.
The black community hasn't been very kind towards them. The Hmong kids were constantly picked on at school while the principles turned a blind eye on them.

12:20 - "I arrived in this country, and I believe that people can see now that I am a respectable elder. Now I'm old. As I age, I conclude that if you are Hmong, be proud to be Hmong in this country."
This translation more accurately captures the heart of the elderly man's concluding remark in light of the Hmong's difficult history leading up to and in French Guiana. His peoples' and his resilience in the face of opposition is the reason why they celebrate being Hmong. They not only rebuilt their community from the ground up but also now contribute to French Guiana's overall economy and sustainability. In the Hmong culture, one's community's honor is also one's honor which is why he takes pride in his people and their accomplishments. He is a respectable elder because of his community!

Helping the U.S is a sad situation, as an Allie during the Vietnam War in Laos, we almost win the war..but the U.S Congress chose to leave in 1973 by not sending more ammunition and other supplies for the Hmong and General Vang Pao’s Military Forces in Laos.
In 1973, The Royalist Lao Government and the Communist Pathet Lao rebels, Left-Wing government signed a peace treaty ceasefire agreement. The Communist lied and tooked over the country in 1975.

We, the Hmong people, migrated from China to Laos in many centuries ago. I hope we're establishing permanent residences in where ever we are now to avoid another movement. This is a good reflection of our experiences and resettlement as refugees from Laos. Thank you to BBC for sharing this special film about our Hmong people.

I'm glad that the French government offered Hmong people a place to settle after the war, but Placing them onto a French territory is kind of a slap in the face. That's like the US saying to the Hmong "we're gonna put you guys on Puerto Rico because your lifestyle doesn't suit the mainland".

    • @northbay4619
      @northbay4619 3 роки тому +3

You're wrong. Many Hmong struggle to assimilate in America and live at the poverty line. You think that way because you think the agrarian lifestyle is inferior when in actuality, the Hmong in French Guiana are considered very prosperous. Meanwhile, the younger generation is also educated and fully participate in the modern world.

    • @Desi365

It's none of that. The Hmongs are farmers and farming was needed in Guiana at that time. That was a fuzzy plan from the onset, to be honest, but the Hmongs made it come to life. Kudos to them.

We are expected to understand how evolution works while at the same time ignore the fact that different populations in different places with hugely different selective pressures and cultures all evolved to be exactly the same other than skin colour. It might not be politically correct to say so, but the evidence does seem to suggest that certain populations have not had the most fortuitous evolutionary path with regards to their suitability in the modern world.

They literally built European and American cities by their slave Labour or by them being enslaved and thus making such place having a booming sector, Manchester,England for example was a small town before the Atlantic slave trade ..
But of course what would someone expect from a racist xenophobe who uses another minority to degrade other minorities to feed his made-up hierarchy and superiority complex.
And this is not even the worst part, people trying to justify and somehow validate such horseshit with "ScIeNcE" instead of criticising it is the scariest part, just like the fool above me.

    • @Aspartame69
      @Aspartame69 3 роки тому +6

@@appleslover If slavery built europe and the US, why is africa so backwards? They have been enslaving each other for millennia and embraced the atlantic slave trade as a way to get hold of advanced technology from europe. Some african countries were the harshest opponents to abolition, while it was the UK that made it happen.
If slavery actually built anything, you would expect africa to be the most well built continent on earth. Its almost as though there are other factors involved.

Also, the term "Miaozu" isn't adherently bad, because the character "苗" is used to explain something like a flower sprouting, which was possibly influenced by our women's colorful clothing. while "族" is the basic's for the word "clan".

Since we on subject, why didn't France government allow the Hmongs to immigrate into France like they did with the Vietnamese, Moroccans and other people from French colonies at that time? We know why and that I think the Hmongs are incredible people with strong survival skills. And support to you means wood planks and metal sheets to build their houses and that was enough for you. So you prefer Missionary help more than the resources the France government offer inside France itself, for instant the psychological help, after all they just arrived from war zone. Yes it was the jungle that they cleared up and build their lives over again and not big cities to what being reported. By the way, my paternal side live in a suburb outside Paris and in Mets. Just because the west have recently abolished slavery, does not mean they can point the finger at others.

@Dicky Tricky I can see your narrow mind cannot consider the other side but let's go with one of the countries you point out.
India has a satisfactory railway system and back when it was built, a good one at that. However they had the abilities to obtain the skill to achieve that themselves, if Britain did not interfer or colonise them. India has enough agriculture to satisfy their nation and again could have increased it themselves, without the need of anyone interfering. They had laws in place effective communication that worked without Britain interfering and dividing the country. But let's see why Britain went to India, as you say for trade?
At the time of India being colonised, India had a wealth of resources worth £41 Trillion. Imagine the value they would have now!
All of which were taken by political moves backed by the army.
Let's not get into another separate example of China and the opium war.

the translators are leaving some specifics out and i personally don’t like that they simplify it
0:10 we we arrived in this land, the darks thought that, us hmong ate people.
0:59 then when we came, it was only forests. (i’m not exactly sure on this part, but:) we then thought, wood, then cut down wood whole. (probably means farm? iono)
2:11 i like that translation, it’s pretty correct.
4:00 They captured my mother and 2 children and sister in law. The reason, that my mom and my sister in law and her children were killed, what was the reason; Because i went to be a soldier, to be a french soldier. You think that you can’t stay anymore. You are the one to take everyone out of laos, and into france, into America.
(background info: Because the usa were leaving “lost” the vietnam war, they left behind the native people there who were helping them. Because hmong people helped the other side, they were being prosecuted. The “secret war” to hmong people were about the recruit of us who became soldiers and helped america fight against communists. everyone in laos had to journey and cross the mekong river to flee from laos to thailand. From thailand, there would be camps of these refugees. And because of that, the usa and france (apparently. i thought it was just the us until now) came and took some of the hmong people to their country. Dispersing the hmong people around the US. you could say hmong people are here now because of this.
6:27 when us hmong came, the forest was dark (meaning there was a lot of forest) when us hmong came. made clothes, stayed and slept. Morning, you think that, “you came to this land, is it right to stay or not stay”, but then you think, “you don’t have land or place anymore, nevermind, as long as there’s a place for wife and children to make food and eat, it’s good. When we then came, it was only jungle.
12:20 i think that, i came to this land, others see that i am an elder who has value. Now, i am old, i am old. i think that, “you are hmong, you are happy you are hmong, that you came to this land here france.”
these are how i personally translate it, i don’t understand some of his words, but this is more specifically translated.

Yes, i noticed there was a gap between French and translation in English.

They live in their own community in safety and unity powered by hard work, why would they want to interact with the rest of the population that were and probably still are hostile towards them. The Hmongs and those other groups share and work in the same land, under the same French system with the same type of opportunities yet the Hmongs are successful and those groups are not so it really is true that some cultures are better than others. They blame everything on France without taking a look back at themselves at their own culture, society and work ethics.
