CHIANG RAI, THAILAND - Welcome to Lanjia Lodge (www.asian-oasis.com/lanjia/), in the mountains, near the Mekong River, in the remote far northern province of Chiang Rai, Thailand. Lanjia Lodge is an eco lodge that supports the local hill tribe village community - and there are two main people ground, the Lahu, and the Hmong people.
While staying at Lanjia Lodge, we arranged one day to visit the Hmong village where the Shaman and his family invited us for a huge celebration local meal. Now I’ve had Hmong food before a number of times, but this was by far the most extensive and diverse Hmong meal I’ve ever had. Hmong are known for being hard workers, their amazing farm practices, and sometimes their simple - yet fulfilling food. It’s not uncommon to have a Hmong meal that includes boiled vegetables and rice. But today was something truly special and magnificent, a Hmong celebration feast!
Just to name a few of the dishes this amazing Hmong family made - roasted duck, pounded green taro stems, an herbal mixture with chicken organs, black chicken soup, boiled black chicken, boiled pumpkin, Hmong chili dip, and Hmong rice - which is a high mountain growing variety of Hmong rice.
We also had a chance to see some of the food being prepared. I was especially fascinated by the pounded green taro stems. I’ve had green taro stems before, but usually cooked. This was my first time to eat them raw and pounded into a chili dip. It was sensational, life changing to be honest.
The entire meal was outstanding, so fresh, so natural tasting - and quickly to mention that just about every single food we ate and ingredient was from the mountain grown and raised by them. The flavors were vibrant, everything tasted so natural and real. The black chicken was slightly chewy and full of flavor, the duck was marinated and roasted. And all the natural vegetables like the pumpkin were maximum sweetness. The chili dips were outstanding.
It was a meal I will never forget, and thank you to this amazing family for their hospitality!

When a Hmong person serves you the Chicken leg, it’s means you are very special. The Hmong grew up poor and didn’t get much meat to eat growing up, so when someone serves you the leg, you mean a lot to them. Back in Laos, when our parents got the chance to eat chicken, everyone wanted the chicken leg as it had the most meat to it. I’m glad you were able to experience the Hmong culture and Hmong food. We take pride in the food we serve!

I met a bunch of Hmong up north of Luang Prababg , Loas.
The head mother fed me and offered to let me sleep in her home. I didn't because I had a bed nearby .
I will never forget the kindness of the Hmong people as I was happily lost in Laos
Having read a lot about this ethnic and their roles during the war in Laos I have decided to visot Laos and Chieng Rai myself this year and hope to know these wonderful people much closer.

When you go eat at a hmong family's house and the cook personally gives you a leg quarter piece, then you are very special to receive that piece because that piece is a prized section of the chicken. In the Hmong culture, the elder/parent gives the young ones the chicken thigh & drumstick to show love. We Hmong don’t outwardly express love through words, but through food. So glad you were able to visit the Hmong in the mountains. 🙏🏼

There is a lot of them in California and Minneapolis region. I love home cooked meals. Eating it with the pepper sauce is so addicting. That sauce makes everything go good. The chicken soup is for the soul. But you add that pepper. You will be bloated after. Could eat it everyday. It’s the best. I miss my grandmom. She would cook the best Hmong foods. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ rip.

That is the traditional process of cooking rice. Now in modern days we have a rice cooker so we've lost the authentic way of preparing rice. It's soothing to see it done the old fashioned way. When you visit any Hmong family and they give you the entire chicken leg quarter that means they respect and honor you. Thank you for featuring our culture again on your travels. Much respect 🙏🏼

The first time I ever heard about Hmong people was in Gran Torino back in 2008. Ever since then, I have always wanted to try Hmong food, it always looks so wonderful, I can only imagine the amazing aroma. Such a wonderful people.

Much respect to the tais (grandma) who is cooking. The hospitality of Hmong people has transcended to the younger generation because we definitely make sure our guest go home full. How she trades the almost empty bowl of soup near Mark with a full one so he can eat all he wants is how we treat our guests. Humble people.

7:05, uncle is describing how newborn babies’ placentas are buried inside the home. The location differs for a girl or a boy. The placentas are believed to be spiritually linked to the baby/person, so the placentas are buried at home so the spirit can find its way back home once the person dies. 24:36 auntie is saying that after a day of farming, her and her husband only eat the greens and the pepper, not anything else. I'm Hmong and my mom loved this video. She was explaining to me what certain ingredients that I couldn't identify was and what it was used for. Thank you for sharing the beautiful culture of my Hmong people. Even in the US, we still have shamans who do rituals, have flea markets and celebrations of all kinds. 🥰

I feel you. My sister can make really good 🌶 pepper sauce. She got the whole youth group crying and cursing her. Her peppers were so hot, there’s not a dry eye in sight. Yet no one could stop eating it. All they could do was say, “We hate you Jin, we hate you”. lol

This is the closest to what I identify with as “Hmong food” in terms of other UA-cam videos focusing on Hmong food.
My experiences may be a little different though for what Hmong food is, as I am privileged enough to have easy access to chicken, chicken oragans, etc living in the states, but even then this meal typically is reserved for special occasions. Regardless, thank you for allowing Hmong cuisine to shine through this video!

@@BearerofWisdom It's because the two dishes she pointed towards are more simple and easier to prepare. The farming life for the Hmong are often very early, long and tedious as they walk miles to where their farm is located. So preparing simple food is a necessary to give more time to tend to the land.

I remember in my childhood as the youngest daughter and having only one brother in our family my parents will save us the chicken leg. That was the best part when it comes to eating chicken for a meal! To get the chicken leg as a guest you are very special and respected Mark! The Hmong are a very hospitable people. They always give their best to a guest. They will give up a seat for the guest. The food they're cooking isn't something the Hmong eat on a regular basis. They really went all out for Mark base on what they had.
that is so true but in rich countries like America, that is the regular traditional meal eaten on a regular basis. But the newer generations don't eat like that regularly no more sadly.
Bro idk bout you. But I eat this everyday. I used too. We rich over here lol. god bless. But we get the healthy skinny chicken for cheap over here from a farm. Kill them and save it for half the year.

That tomato pepper is a staple for us Hmong. Watching this made my heart so happy. Even in the states, when Hmong families have a visitor or special guest, similar meals are prepared. Food is definitely our love language. Another great video, Mark!!! Enjoyed this very much!

Watching this video makes me feel warm inside from the hospitality and care that the family provided for you. You were appreciated in the couples home because you were given the thigh and drum at the beginning of your meal. That part of the chicken is usually given to someone we care for or love, or someone special. This small details was recognized among us hmong people. Thank you for showing and visiting our people. Beautiful video 📹 I was raised in Mexico then moved to California in the valley and all my neighbors were Hmong family's very nice and respectful 🙏 people I was 10 years old and they were very nice and the food was amazing. Miss those days this video brought back memories.

Love that the lady gave you the chicken leg quarter. That’s pure love, without saying. In our culture the chicken leg quarter is given to the guest of honor or the person the shaman ceremony is for. It is a simple gesture, but it’s the meaning behind it that is priceless.
Mark, when you're the guest in a Hmong home, you will always be given the drumstick. It is the highest honor.

@@eduardochavacano there are several Hmong tribes scattered across all of Southeast Asia with many in Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and China.
