    When I started following your channel, Sr. Chief, I did some stoichometric research on AR and I didn’t understand why you added the nitric in increments, but I reasoned that because you are the expert for these processes, you knew something not greatly discussed on the interweb. I just stumbled on this video and NOW I get it. Thank you for your entertaining instruction! 👍👍👊👊

    Interesting approach. You can reclaim some of that nitric acid by bubbling the nitrogen dioxide through water and then distilling to concentrate it. It won't get all of it but that would allow you to recycle some of your nitric acid.

    should be adding distilled water 3xs the volume, then SMB in beaker 1. Urea should be used to nutralize the Nitric, then distilled water, then SMB. Also easier to dissolve SMB in distilled water first then add.

      (Incremental nitric dosing to dissolve gold) and (inquarting the gold with silver then parting with nitric acid) are the two most beneficial things that I have ever learned in my gold refining experience. Sometimes I over shoot with the nitric. When I do, I never use urea. Instead, I use sulfamic acid to kill excess nitric. Sulfamic acid is tile cleaner from Home Depot, about $8 for a pound.

    • @georgehollowell5000
      @georgehollowell5000 5 років тому +1

      That is good to know about the sulfamic acid. I can use urea as I already have about 2 lbs of it that I inherited. Have you ever done a video on the environmentally safe way to dispose of spent chemicals? I am not a chemist and am worried about waste chemical disposal.

    Idk if it's right but has been working for me is I add a few tbsp of sodium bicarbonate to knock down the nitric. If I accidentally put too much sodium bicarbonate the SMB won't react and then I just put back on the heat and that releases the SO2. Sreetips way is WAY better of course less waste of chemicals but as a back up I do this been working

    I'd also like to thank you I feel like with the instruction you gove in this video ill be able to reproduce the process. I have around 2000 grams of recycled gold bars, I'm going to melt them down into little bb sized shots and then use your instructional video here to see home much gold i can actually get out of them. I live in the country in the sticks and Ive ordered so much lab equipment this week off amazon I'm pretty sure they are going to think im aetting up a meth lab. But i have the confidence now to really give it a try. I've been thinking about trying for some time and ive been buying up recycled gold when i can get it super cheap on ebay. I'd be happy if i got a 10% return on the gold 20 grams off of 2000 grams id be happy it would at least pay for the equipment and maybe next batch will turn a profit. I also won an order of 0.87 pounds of 24k gold flake. I shouldnt have to do anything to that correct? Id hatecto melt it down to a bar and it have some impurities in it. I'm new to all this so im not exactly sure these first few time will definitely be experiments and hopefully i get it right. And again Thanks a million for you video's so far they are by far the best inatructional videos I've seen!! 👍👍

  • @pneumatic00
    @pneumatic00 6 років тому +1

    Absolutely fantastic demo. Superb. The only mistake I believe you made is: When you made the premix AR you went 4:1 HCL to Nitric. At 25:45 you say the 50 ml leftover AR probably contains 8 ml nitric. No, I say 10-12 ml nitric. Then, on the second redissolve where you've combined the two batches and are "reusing" the leftover premix AR, you calc that you'll need 36 ml Nitric. I agree. You start by adding 15 ml new nitric over and above the premix...then just a bit more, in single ml doses. Be that as it may....right or wrong on the math, because you are stingy with your nitric and only add it in the small increments, you made your main point *a second time*. Terrific video, excellent, can't say enough good things about your technique.

    The 4 to 1 ratio is for using vacuum distilled ( 90 % nitric acid ) as per Hoke's book. The 3 to 1 nitric is for the 68% nitric . So check your strengths before mixing.

    • @sreetips
      @sreetips  5 років тому +1

      You should never premix aqua regia. I can dissolve a troy once of pure gold in 200ml HCl and 20ml 68% nitric. That's 10 to 1 ratio. Mixing (4 to 1) or (3 to 1) just isn't done like that any more. That's way too much nitric. It wastes chemicals and guarantees that there will be problems with excess nitric during precipitation.

    • @ogremgtow990
      @ogremgtow990 5 років тому

    • @sreetips
      @sreetips  6 років тому +2

      Gold covered pins are gold plated. There is a very thin coating of gold over a base metal. Usually brass or copper, but sometimes steel. Steel will not dissolve very well in nitric acid. Use a magnet to see if you have steel or brass as base metal. In any case, the amount of gold will be very small. And you must use a sulfuric acid stripping cell to deplate the gold. It would be a hard first-time experiment to pull off. I've done milspec pins by dissolving the base metal (nonmagnetic brass) with hot dilute nitric acid, then dissolving the resulting gold foils in aqua regia, but it took a long time and used much acid. Good luck with your refining experiments.

    • @sreetips
      @sreetips  6 років тому +1

      A single refining should get the gold to about 995 with silver chloride being the main contaminant. You can tell that silver is in the gold solution by the cloudiness of the solution after the first refining. If you look closely at the liquid after the second refining (dissolving) you'll see that the filtered solution is crystal clear with no traces of cloudiness. I like to call it clear and bright. You can read a news paper through it. This second refining really cleans the gold up nicely. Gets it to three nines just about every time. This is the reason I always do at least two refinings, to get the gold purity to the industry standard of 999. If it's still cloudy after the second refining, I'll do a third refining. They test my gold with an XRF. It ALWAYS assays at three nines fine, every time.

    I wouldn't try to do this kind of thing myself.
    This IS a great experinent!
    I like that you look at all the methods and all the data and compare results.
    More than that, you don't treat anything as trivial. All the information you gather has value.
    That said, are there other methods that you will test and compare in future vids? Maybe one I missed?
    I saw a vid where you used a method involving chlorine bleach.

      The premix 4 to 1 beaker dissolved in 20 minutes. The incrementally dosed nitric beaker took almost two hours to dissolve completely.

      @@sreetips I'm not sure how. I tried getting the silver out with dilute nitric, no luck. The AR is green after heat and incrimental dosing all day, and my shot looks slightly brownish but it's still completely whole.

    What are the filters collecting? Great video on efficiency by the way, incremental dosing is brilliant. I thought I was going to lose my mind when you were adding the sodium metabisulfite. It was a little like Groundhog Day the movie. Thanks for the great info.

      The filters are collecting what filters always collect. Suspended particles of various contaminants. Could be undissolved particles of anything that's not gold.

    Sreetips, your videos couldn’t be better! Thank you for such solid and straightforward tutorials!
    A real quick question though… I have a batch of AR with placer Gold and Mercury in Solution. I’ve denoxed the AR w/ Sulfamic Acid and diluted w/ 3x water by volume to precipitate and filter any silver. Game plan is to drop AU w/ SMB as usual. After filtering to recover AU my understanding is that I can precipitate Mercury w/ Lye (Sodium hydroxide) to Mercury Oxide. Then Dry and use strong heat to drive off the oxygen to re-claim my liquid Mercury. Does that sound accurate for pulling this off, or is there a better route?

    • @sreetips
      @sreetips  2 роки тому +1

      Cameron, I’ve never used mercury in any of my processes. I don’t have any experience with it.

    What about using urea to neutralize the nitric? I remember my father using that and then bubbling sulfur dioxide gas through the solution to precipitate the gold. Very informative video!

    • @sreetips
      @sreetips  6 років тому +4

      Don't need any urea. If we add just enough nitric, like I did in this video, then there will be no need to remove excess nitric because there won't be any to remove. If you look at the clock when dissolving #1 and #2, it actually took #1 almost two hours to dissolve (I incorrectly state in the video that it took one hour). This requires patience. Because the premixed AR took only 1/2 hour to completely dissolve. Someone once told me that if I didn't have the patience required to do it right in my refining technique, then I should go out and buy a bowling ball.

    I have 4 different batches on now. 1 real dark yellow, 1 green tint other 2 amber color. After SmB the green 1 stuff in bottom is black and gold color, other 3 are gold color. Not brown or cinnamon color

      If it were me and I was certain that the solids are gold (gold in finely divided condition will appear dark brown or even black in some cases) I'd get all the solids into a filter then put it in a clean beaker, filter and all, and dissolve it again in AR adding some sulfuric 1ml to clear out the lead. Then I'd filter out any junk, and drop the gold a second time with SMB. if it still didn't look right, I'd do it all again until it did.

    • @1hardman161
      @1hardman161 6 років тому

      Thanks. The SmB isnt dropping. Have you ever dealt with sulfides? The crushed ore and stuff I sent to a refiner, said X amount per pound of sulfides. This is what I am trying to recover. The refiner wont say how he extracted the gold from sulfides. I tried just sulfides in AR, then pit roast with charcoal for 3 hours, now I just roasted in iron pot in my forge at 1,100 degr. for 45min. Thats what I now have in AR. I heard use urea to cut the Nitric and zinc to drop, then put all in sulfuric to eat up the zinc. Does any or all of this sound correct to you? I took 300ml of dissolved and put copper pipe in,on heat, to try to collect the gold. I would appreciate any and all help, thanks. Just watched this video 3rd time to see if I missed something.
