I took some birdhouses from the dollar store and turned them into a usable piece of terrain for tabletop gaming.

Cricut Project File for shingles: design.cricut.com/landing/project-detail/654270df4e111bea3cbfd0d8
I have a new website!
Same url www.blackmagiccraft.ca but completely refreshed with all the Essential Equipment links updated! Check it out.
Would you be willing to upload an SVG for the roof shingles? I'm new to Cricut, but I think there might be something wrong with the project file preventing me from importing it.
@@ZacharyHubbs I was having some trouble as well, I right clicked and saved image on the link and then imported it into cricut from there and that worked for me.
I'd love to see you make baba yagas house
...not sure how to get the feet
Try flipping your mat over and peel it from your project, instead of pulling your cut material from the mat 😁
To avoid overspray, use a paper card (or whatever is handy) to block what you don't want to get paint on while airbrushing.
I like how you combined the birdhouses into a multilevel building that could work as an inn or moderately priced home.
This guy. Years in, he's still changing the game, innovating all the time. Now everyone's running out getting CriCuts! Love it.
Well to be fair..... Using a Cricket machine to make stuff like this is something that has been going on since the company went to the design space concept.. so many years at this point ....
Just a heads up - the cricut is pretty tightly tied to the online tools you need to run it, so you're dependent on continuing support from the company just to use it. When they shut that down, your cricut becomes a door stop.
Silhouette cutters come with more future proof, offline software, and even have some open source options.
@@saltfreegamerseconding this, I bought a silhouette almost 10 years ago and have never needed to do anything special beyond replacing old/worn out blades and un-sticky sheets. Since it's old it's super noisy but still works great!
Agreed
Thank you for this tip as I've been itching to get a Cricut. Will get a silhouette cutter instead
Great idea! Storycraft society recently did a short series of these, only with singular birdhouses.
yup my thought exactly.
Could be total coincidence that they both found these but I saw this video in my feed and totally expected this to be a shoutout to storycraft society. Nothing wrong with liking both though, Jeremy does take this one to the next level!
@@GrandManDan its a coinkidink.
Right? They both have very different styles though, it's fun to see different takes on using the same material
The problem with their build was, in my opinion at least, that they added way too much stuff. To the point that they might as well had started with a block of xps foam. When picking a foundation to work off from, you do so to cut down in build time. However their builds still took quite some time.
Oooh! . . .No flashing on the roof! It's gonna leak! (You're a contractor/builder. You know what I mean. LOL!)
AWESOME BUILD!! Bird houses!! Who'd'a thunk? Thank you for showing your secrets. It's always fun to watch.
I have been watching your work for, I don't know how long, this is a great project that pulls in so much of what I have seen you evolve, the rolling pin in the caulking on card, just brilliant! Thank you for all your inspiration! I am clearing space to have a crack at this as I finished watching :-)
This is so cool! A tip I got from life-size DIY: When you're airbrushing the roof/wall line (red and white base coats at around 10:44) - grab a sheet of cardboard or I like a paint scraper, and cover the wall to the edge while spraying the roof (you see a lot of people doing paint spraying on actual houses using this method, with giant bits of cardboard or sheets of material
As always, amazing. Side note... this is a GREAT idea for making Halloween, winter, Spring villages. Low expense with high quality results, and if they get damages, you don't have to just toss them out. Being that they are not ceramic, repair would be fairly easy, Thank you!
I have no idea what table top gaming is, but the youtube algorithms brought me here because i was looking to build fairy houses. Thanks, some good concepts. Not sure all of the materials you used would be suitable for outdoor use. Fun video to watch.
looks cool! storycraft society also has some videos about making houses out of these
Really creative designs.
Thanks for sharing!
🏕
Thank you for all the great tips. I can’t wait to try the cheap birdhouse method. What a timesaver!
Just stumbled upon Black Magic Craft. It was cool to watch but I love that I just learned about 2 new (to me) materials i can play with!
Thank you!!
And that becomes the next thing on the 'should probably try that out list' - but totally going to use the caulk on construction paper trick (walls, streets, indistrial floors & walls - so many options). I'd love to see what you could do with the plastic doll house fronts from Dollar Tree (which look like the front doors are scaled perfectly for 28mm)
dude your a genius, the stone work roller method gamechanger !
A cordless multi tool is definitely one of my favorite tool purchases
Nice you are really great crafting these houses .thank you so much for sharing.god bless 👍✌️👏🙂🇨🇦
Well done! Enjoyed the conversion.
Loved watching this. You are very talented.
I always say dollar store nail files are cheap sandpaper for super budget/accessible friendly crafting!
lovely result. :)
here in germany there is a dollar store chain, and they used to have such bird houses that didn't even give access to anything inside... and a toy chest that wouldn't open. XD but now I see what they could be good for. :D
This is great and I never would have thought about it
I love the way you describe multiple ways to do things
Nice stuff. Been looking longingly at those bird houses every trip to the craft store.
Jeremy, this turned out so good!
Hope StorycraftSociety sees this.
This is freaking genius!!
hands down the best video i have watch of yours to date
This was awesome!! Thank you - just picked up a bunch of bird houses at the dollar store…!
Great job, truly a work of art!
This is pretty cool and a nice change from just turning those little Dollarama bird houses into just ornaments! Thanks 👏for the great idea! 👍😊
🐾🌈☮️🇨🇦
Great video as always. Two possible tips for you. If you have problems with rattle can primer, you can use a matt finish over that first and then should have no problems with washes. Second, use pieces of paper to mask off areas you don't want paint on. Either hold it or tape it.
i want a livable life sized one!! stupendous work there : )
Love to see someone else use those Dollarama birdhouses! Bravo sir!
Looks fantastic!!
Something else that works REiners. I’ve used those for some of my builds cuz I have good access to them from working in a restaurant and snag some that get thrown away cuz they fall on the floor or whatever. They take wood grain texturing very well!ALLY well for thin strips of wood texture, is the flat sections of styrofoam clamshell food takeout conta
love the craft you built. It looks great!! Just throwing it out there. If you felt like not having to do the touchups for the transitions between shingle roof and stucco wall you can mask it. I'm sure you have blue painter's tape, but what Vince V uses for complex models with crazy shapes is silly putty. It's easy to work with and cheap. Dunno if that's something you want to play with, but there ya go. Keep up the great work. Love the bird house conversion idea! :D
This video was awesome! Love the easy practical builds
Always grat to watch you work! Thanks!
This turned out better than I would have guessed looking at what you started out with. Great job!
Great Idea, great Work.
Edge cut or decorative scissors. You could make something shingle like very rapidly maybe? You could at least cut trim and decorations in seconds.
This should help me get some more density to my Mordheim tables! Thanks!
good job , you always full of inspiration.
I love having a Cricut
Amazing work!
Damn, Jeremy's caulk tricks are great, they just keep growing.
Next time if you don't want overs pray just use a little bit of cardstock to protect the part you don't want to get paint on.
That is awesome!
This is a great idea! Now I can use up that one crappy bird house I've had since 3rd grade
Nice video! I think that construction paper and caulking combo are awesome! I am going to use it to make bases for minis, I have always had a really tough time applying it directly to bases with rollers but If I do it on paper first then I can pick the best bits and just cut them out and glue them to bases! Thanks!
Stunning results - deffo going to try and find something like this -- any suggestions for SciFi buildings beyond the 'war bunker' ??
Amazing thanks.
You should make a whole city out of these houses, that would be great 👍
man beautiful work as always
G'day to you Sir, I hope my Wife dosnt notice her little Bird Houses go missing, I will give it a try, thanks for a Great idea!
Love it!
Great ideas in a good video !
Thanks inspirational guy
Wow that's cool
That was great!!😄💙
W0w that was fascinating.
Amazing!!!
I am making a couple of small dioramas for Christmas presents just now. I am really stuck on a request for a Tim Burton style fantasy house!
I don't want to just reproduce Jack Skelington's house, but i can't wrap my head around how the mad geometry so distinct of Tim Burton comes together 🤣
Would be awesome if you made your take on a Tim Burton style fantasy building, I really think the style would suit some kind of steam punk Dwarven inventors home haha
Great work dude! Can't wait to try this out when I make some row houses!
Great way giving the "bird" to the dollar store! Awesome craft build!
cool idea !
Awesome
awesome job man
It came out brilliant. Would never say it started with those birdhouses.
Dang, bro, another awesome video! I have learned so much from your channel the past few years. It was you that got me to try out the pan pastels. I sure do appreciate you! - Rick, USMC
Love it
Holy shit. That amazing.
I wonder if you could use the same technique as you did for the stone for the roof? I feel like it's plausible to have a roller imprint the shingle pattern
I use the same houses, I'm making a village and I'm going to put it in the park. So people can see as they walk down the path.
Do you sell them after you make them? You do a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful job.
If there's not already one available I bet you could get someone to design a 3d printable shingle roller.
I hope there's a reference to story craft society!
To what?
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial another youtube channel, haven't watched this yet but he's done a series of videos using the same birdhouses. I know he references your videos in his so I'm hopi g this is the same be kind of cool
Unfortunately I haven’t seen those videos.
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial darn, I thought I'd would be cool if he got a shout out. Oh well these things happen. I know you do things were you take something like these and turn them into cool things. So it will be nice to watch later and see your take on it
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial finally watched, sorry it took so long. Work and home life. Great build and whilst a similar concept the execution was totally different. Loved what you did. I may have to n invest in a machine for tiles. I've actually started buying some that someone cuts on such a machine. I hate cutting tiles
What about the same process for the roof that for the stone work ? 3D print a roller ?
I really need to get back into making terrain.. my airbrush skills stink and I cannot paint minis for squat, but making terrain was always fun. My BIG question is... what do you do with all of it? I mean, I've been watching for years and I just cannot imagine the storage space required to keep it all haha!
I donate a ton of it.
What brick texture roller is that? I looked through your essential equipment link, but didn't see it there and like it more than others I've found. Thanks!
Genius move, I'm going to be clearing out the local stores.
You could have used a piece of card or paper to put against the wall as masking and you would not get red overspray on the wall
I do not have those bird houses in our local Dollar Stores in sweden. Where can i found similar? Great video btw! Love your job!
Aren't these ment to be bird _feeders_ rather than bird houses? Well, they're not very good at either, so it probably doesn't matter.
Excellent build and paint job! Particularly the red tiled roof, made it look like old clay tiles rather than slate, very nice.
The one house that had a smaller house on top made me think of old Norwegian staff churches, which were part of the inspiration for the look of Edoras in the LotR movies.
How well do these hold up in the outdoor elements?
Badass
I desire to CREATE THESE
Great idea, skill and video. But shingles (wooden, not asphalt) aren't red. Red are usually ceramic roof tiles, same as the bricks. Shingles are made out of the wood so the colors for them are yellow, brown, grey, dark. Depending on how old they may be. I mean, paint it how you like it, but this color makes the roof looks kinda almost modern or from very recent history. The colors tells part of the story by themselves.
Dragons aren’t real
A very Tweet idea
Where do you get your dyno flex
Con BUENA PICHA bien se jode
Which DAP Dynaflex is that?
230. I've updated the Essential Equipment page to include a link to it.
I’ve been wanting to get my my cricut into my terrain. Can you share your svg file for the tiles?
How about this? design.cricut.com/landing/project-detail/654270df4e111bea3cbfd0d8
Put a litle soul in your birdhouse.
brb...Busting out some unused tubes of dynflex...
Im going to make some of these to help me draw my comic. I have such a hard time drawing fantasy buildings but i love making stuff.
Can you make Valak and scene in which he regained his divine powers.
I work at Michaels and I've been eyeing our birdhouses and cardboard houses thinking the same thing. Love it.
Whenever I go to Michaels and see another single dude looking at things like that I know he's making terrain lol
Nice
Still a lot of work for something my players' wizard will end up burning down, anyway.
A tad trigger-happy with the fireballs, you see.
Airbrush tip: a quick way to mask off flat, straight areas like that roof section is to hold a strip of card (like a business card) against it with one hand, and spray with the other. It won't be as crisp as tape or masking putty, but it's way faster and easier.
@saltfreegamer, I second your suggestion.
I was about to comment this but wanted to check if someone else said it already! Definitely the easiest/fastest way to get cleaner lines
