It was painfully obvious how much Hollywood Records was holding Sabrina back when she practically exploded in success once she moved out. That label was not made for mainstream artists, just those promoting on Radio Disney.
Yes yes but Sabrina is with the same label as Demi but her team made sure Short N Sweet became a global success, that’s what Demis been lacking, they haven’t had a SUCCESSFUL era since Tell Me You Love Me, we could argue Dancing With The Devil era was a successful era but the singles didn’t last longer than 10 weeks on the charts, all the singles are Platinum but still it didn’t match up to TMYLM era

I remember 2015 musical landscape being very crowded. Nicki Minaj, Ariana, Selena Gomez, Maroon 5 & more absolutely dominated the year. Ed Sheeran, The Weekend, Sam Smith, Fetty Wap & Megan Trainor we’re all farely new in 2015 while artists like Adele & Justin Bieber had huge album comebacks & Taylor was riding high off of the 1989 album. There was just a lot of competition that year.
Their management ruined the era tbh. They were so desperate to make fetch happen again with nick and joe that it overshadowed Demi. And Scooter was even worse with their follow up albums.
I have a lot of factors as to why Confident “flopped” -chart manipulation, both Confident & CFTS were huge radio hits but on the Hot 100, they were points away from Top 10s, even Billboard confirmed CFTS peaked at 10 -single choices: Demi could’ve had 5 huge singles but her team wasn’t pushing the rollout the way it was supposed to, had they push CFTS immediately to radio, it would’ve been #1, you also had potential hits like Kingdom Come & Wildfire which could’ve had a remix with The Weeknd and those could’ve been huge hits -The Tour: Confident was supposed to be a SOLO tour with Adam Lambert as the rumored opening act but her manager at the time was pushing Nick Jonas alongside her since he wasn’t doing well solo wise, which was why we got the Future Now Tour -Authenticity: Demi wanted full control of their image which was working well but she was giving into her inner demons at the time so sometimes it did come off inauthentic and she wasn’t confident with herself. Overall Confident is one of the best pop albums of 2015 and one of the best pop albums in history, it just wasn’t handled properly HOWEVER the singles did showcase longevity with CFTS being a classic pop record, Confident being used in promos for movies and TV shows, and Stone Cold being the go to song for competition shows like The Voice & American Idol across the globe, and being praised by Aretha Franklin and Patti LaBelle
maybe it’s a matter of taste, but i never really understood the hype of demi (2013 album) compared to confident or tell me you love me. it certainly helped her throwing her career away of her disney girl status, but it was still quite teenage, if it makes sense. confident made the step that next lead to her best album, tell me you love me, the deepest and more mature (although dancing with the devil also matches that). surely confident can look generic in some points but it’s not a good reason to explain its underwhelming performance, in my opinion it’s more about the lack of promotion and audience attention. again some songs are kinda repetitive, but most of them sound quite charismatic and emotionally connected.
Ok but to be fair, Stone Cold ATE and is one the best in her discography and it was performed live at shows so I wouldn’t change a thing (see what I did there)
I think Demi is severely underrated mainly due to her vocals. You nailed this video. Here We Go Again is her best album. And I agree, the biggest issue with Demi’s music is it’s too generic that could be sung by anyone. As much she’s struggled with finding her identity, her music overall lacks any unique identity of its own
That was my immediate thoughts when I think about 2015 is I'm like girl if you were there in 2015 you KNOW pop was PUSHING the envelope and demi was well not
I feel like you explained the lack of authenticity during this album so well. I didn't really understand the confusion or disdain for this album/era for years. I thought the album was great, and cohesive up until I looked deep into the repetitive subject in the majority of the tracks, as well as the notable jump from the DEMI era to the Confident era. This era/album also doesn't seem authentic when just two years prior Demi was making pretty bubblegum pop pre-teen music, then a complete switch-up for a more adult sound/look. I always felt like Demi always and to this day struggles with what can be authentic with themselves, and what can be main-stream consumable. The only albums I have seen them do this well is, their first two albums.
I think back to that Genius interview with Cardi B when she was first starting out and how she kinda clowned on Demi, when she sang a bit of "Confident" and immediately said Demi herself wasn't confident.... she was kinda right, cuz why was Demi talking so much crap on twitter at the time about really stupid things that made her look, well, insecure.
another problem i think is that she was very unlikeable this era. the “badass” image wasn’t very convincing, she came after taylor for financially helping kesha out, she invited selena drama again during a magazine interview saying they were not friends a few months after they promoted their singles together with a selfie on twitter, and the “i don’t know her either” saga…… the behavior definitely contributed to it
Man ,you don't know what you're talking about. Even after a decade Confident album is still my favourite of Demi's album It's also her only album nominated by Grammy award , vocally this album is heaven I really wish Demi would do album similar to Confident The problem is not and never been Demi's albums or music She had bad management but also Demi has and always had one of the weakest fan base , they not pushing enough
Demi has the potential to be like Ariana or Taylor she has the voice the look especially when she takes care of herself and choose the right style for her, but every time people remember her and miss her in the music field like in 2019 when people want her come back especially when she went to Coma for overdose she came with " dance with the devil" album which is so boring , when they waiting for something like Demi or unbroken 😕
DWTD was suposed to be her most lowkey album. people thinks that demi is loud so this is her quietest album, if you think about it that way, its quite nice i guess
to me this confident era made me love demi even more. The singles choices was good.. there are skips in this album but overall I think the singles especially cool for the summer made naysayers notice her and say oh she’s cool actually and made demi more popular IMO. the demi album I agree was more commercially a success overall but people I knew didn’t care for her music still except for heart attack. But when cool for the summer came out people started to notice her more for the more edgy young adult direction. Album wise it was mid, but the singles made an impact even the single confident, it is still used to this day for commercials, movies, sporting ads, etc. Confident was also her only Grammy nominated album which meant she finally was recognized. the album was more gritty and more explicit which threw people off for a loop because they’re used to the Disney or bubblegum pop image. Demi wanted to experiment and grow and people weren’t into it. But I agree about the radio support I wish it had more and the album overall didn’t seem to have more radio potentials (aside from CFTS and confident) in comparison to the Demi Album

I remember the confident album being kinda generic. Yeah demi is a good singer but the reason selena is often noted for having better music is because her albums were not as painfully generic as demi's were. If you heard a demi song about empowerment, you likely heard many songs like that from her discography. So she didn't really have a chance as a albums artist.
Both are singles artists tbh. However, I do agree that Selena pivoting into that lana type of dark pop sound was the perfect move to break her disney image though. I think if Demi had more dark sounding songs on the album, it would’ve balanced out the 2010s pop rock feel more
