    Fans complained that Season 1 Picard was a copy-pasta of one or two Federation ships. By Season 3 of Picard, the design and SFX teams had virtually brought back as many old ships as possible and practically canonized Star Trek Online's entire fleet roster all at once. That's awesome. 🙂

    I think the D getting down like it was in Ace Combat was thanks to Data. He multi-tasked the thrusters like a god.
    Probably his greatest achievement.
    I'd wager other federation ships could pull it off, but I doubt with the skill Data has.

      You can put the best stunt driver in a stock Honda Accord, and s/he'll drive it better than nearly anyone else- but its still a freaking Accord, and there are limits to what the machine can pull off and endure.
      A Galaxy-Class, even with the best helmsman in the quadrant, is still a Galaxy-Class, with the same amount of thrusters and maneuvering tech that it had in Next Gen... And a similar amount of mass that has to be accounted for.
      Also- we can't forget that Troi apparently was able to fly the Dee just was well, if not better- she did take over controls and escaped the explosion, complete with a pit stop. So, can't even just say it was the android...

      I'd also give a good reason on why the Ent D didn't fly like that before would be the inerial dampeners inability to keep up with Data's maneuvering. If the D was rocking back and forth like that with 1000+ people onboard Sickbay would be flooded with crash injuries

      @@DarthTaz My thoughts exactly... we've seen her pull some incredible tight and spot turns, but it's always been a single quick manoeuvre here or there, not continuous manoeuvre after manoeuvre. We know the RCS is up to it, so that leaves the IDS and LS to limit it. With no crew, IDS and LS can basically be off for most of the vessel. freeing up even more power for the RCS and defence systems (something alluded to in DS9 too, even though we never see a galaxy pull stunts in that show either).

    I really liked the Intrepid. I thought the underslung pod and general layout gave it a real sense of menace, almost from the Tom Paris school of design "Want trouble to look the other way? Look like you will phaser a fool for just thinking of scanning you!" Also I had to let the whole Titan refit issue go because it was driving me batty. Seems like it was more a plot element to drive conflict than to make any sense at all.

    When it comes to the Ent-D flying like she's a fighter...I'd bet under normal circumstances those sorts of moves would rather shorten the lifespan of a ship's hull, which is why you wouldn't typically see those maneuvers. But given the situation, and the fact she's just going to be going back to a museum if they survived, there'd be no real harm in pushing the old girl to her limits just that once.

      A ship also that had no crew other than those on the bridge and any drones working around in her. So all you really had to do was focus life support to a certain section allowing the ship to perform the way it does and DATA was likely using every single thruster and engine to the max.

      It's also notable that within the same episode, the Titan-A, which is fully manned and crewed, didn't move like a fighter, and maneuvered in less spectacular fashion (albeit still fast). Part of that is likely due to its helmsman at the time not being the best there is, but it does highlight how spectacular the maneuvering on the Enterprise D was inside the cube and the extenuating circumstances behind its ability to do so. It's also telling that the Enterprise D only really maneuvered so sharply in the episode on two occasions both inside the Borg Cube, and that otherwise it was mostly flying straight with gentler maneuvers. Third thing of note is that the Galaxy always had the potential to move like that, but likely wasn't practiced much for safety concerns: as mentioned, moments like Picard's slingshot maneuver around an asteroid, or the other times the Galaxy and other similar sized ships made sharp maneuvers.

    On the one hand, they call the Titan a 'refit', but on the other hand, it's called the Titan A, rather than just the Titan, suggesting it's a new ship.
    The way I figure it is that it makes such heavy reuse of materials from the original Titan, but rearranges them so severely, that even the characters in-universe are a bit unsure whether to consider it a new ship or a refit, so they just kinda treat it as being both at the same time.

    • @ZeroB4NG
      @ZeroB4NG Рік тому +6

      The way i understood it was that there was a Titan before the Luna Class Titan from Riker but they had different registry numbers, just re-used the Name,
      that was the original fan design, it also hangs on the wall in the conference room, it is totally possible that the -A is a refit of the original first ship with donor pieces from the Luna Class...
      now why they would decommission a Luna Class ship when those still fly around in the Show, who knows?
      I thought it was a cool Ship but the whole Titan angle was a bit weird and renaming it to Enterprise G at the end was just... jesus i just got over the awkwardness of calling it the Titan and now you made it awkward all over again.
      I always wanted to see Riker on the Titan in live action, but of course HIS Luna Class, this didn't scratch that itch that went unscratched ever since Nemesis.

    • @Quetzalcoatl_Feathered_Serpent
      @Quetzalcoatl_Feathered_Serpent Рік тому +1

      @@ZeroB4NG I could give some explanation.
      For the refit.
      The Neo Constitution likely was a new ship all together, and Riker being Riker likely got involved in a fight which crippled the ship so horribly that re-building her especially after MARS likely wasn't cost efficient. When they were building the A, and Rikers ship came up someone figured that since the computer core and elements of the Lunar ship was still useable and could be adapted to the New Constitution they just installed them. We don't know for sure how much of Rikers ship was truly installed but its likely his titan might have had a refit at some point prior to the incident before and someone figured those parts were too valuable to scrap and installed them on the Titan A and figured since a sizable portion of the former Lunar was in the Neo Constitution just write it off as a refit, and just pray to the gods someone doesn't bring it up.
      This would explain why no one was sure how to call the Titan A a refit or a new ship.
      As for being called the New Enterprise. I think people got used to Enterprise being the Flagship. Having her back as one of the ships instead of the ship kinda gives her more breathing room again. A chance to be more like Voyager, or the original TOS enterprise as that one ship that can do these missions or lost somewhere and considered a semi-disposable asset if something goes wrong or did go wrong.
      Enterprise in TOS was a little through middle age when she was doing her five years with Kirk. Older ship means a little more acceptable to lose. More willing to take risk

    Despite being a fan overall of Season 3, especially compared to the last 2 seasons, I wasn't a fan of the renaming of the Titan. It's generally a bit unlucky to rename a ship normally, let alone what the Titan had been through. It's one of the reason i think the Ent-A had so many issues in ST: V, and while, in the moment, it was a nice gesture, it really wasn't needed. Having the Titan carry the flag for a while would have been fine, and unless the next few Enterprises are around for centuries, we're getting awfully close to J a lot sooner than expected.
    I'll admit, some of the annoyance is to how the show runners both love STO for their designs, but at the same time seem to go out of their way to mess with their timeline. Which sucks since a LOT of it could be tied in without issue. Focus on the Changeling ID protocols lets the Undine have a way in since their abilities aren't based on the same sort of shapeshifting. Mothballing the F since it's been damaged from some event could have allowed for it to be brought back into service after extensive repairs, delayed by interference from the Undine, Letting the Titan take the flagship role for a decade.
    When they added the Verity way early in the timeline in the comics, we were annoyed, but figured out how to adjust the timeline to make it work.
    Copy-paste fleet? Yeah, the new spacedock facilities have more advanced replicators, so can print most of a hull in one piece: great for durability, abysmal for serviceability. Leads to the modular parts for Kitbashing.
    Borg coming back? Yeah, makes sense. Bee colonies can occasionally kick out their queen if the hive becomes a liability, Having a nuralytic pathogen in your system could very well have had the queen take here "loyal" drones and hide at the edge of space while looking for a solution, managing dwindling numbers. It also lets the Borg Cooperative gain a foothold, and allows for the Borg to reform into a new collective with the design we see in STO, and a queen voiced by Lani Minellia.
    But, I digress. Most of my complaints was to how for the longest time, STO was the torchbearer of the franchise, stories set in the post- Nemesis timeframe with respect for the established lore, creative ways to include the Kelvin Timeline stuff, and even the Discovery era, that made enough sense to not be super jarring. STO has it's problems, but how it tried to make something from the dangling plot threads left behind from the series has always a highlight.
    That being said, Here's hoping that Shaw gets a shuttle named after him when the G series comes. Although, knowing Shaw, he'd probably prefer a Workbee. Keep up the good work, Spacedock.

    The Enterprise D's ability to maneuver in space is limited by 3 factors.
    1) Inertial Dampening fields, the faster a turn, the greater the stress on them. Wouldn't want to liquefy the crew would you?
    2) Structural integrity fields, basically because of its mass different parts have different inertia. The fields holds everything together when under stress.
    3) Power to feed 1 and 2. The faster they move or take a turn the more power the other 2 take.
    However in the final episode, only the Bridge is occupied, and it has its own power generator and Life support. This means every once of power can got to the Shields, propulsion, Inertial dampening (only really needs the bridge for this) and Structural Integrity fields. With that kind of power I bet the old girl could do some crazy things.

    • @Sephiroth144
      @Sephiroth144 Рік тому +5

      I would hazard intertial dampening would be needed near critical systems throughout the ship, not just where the meat is; wouldn't want to be putting how much thousands of G-Forces on the warp reactor or computer core, and probably don't want the photon torpedoes to go flying everywhere inside the ship... But I would agree that they could cut some of that, and most of life support, and reroute that to the SI fields.

    Never did understand why people thought the Enterprise D couldn't maneuver the way she did during that Borg Trench run sequence. We've seen her do limited maneuvers inside the Jenolan Dyson Sphere and later on we saw what ships like the miranda class and others could do during the battle sequences in DS9. From the battle of Wolf 359 with Sisko's Saratoga and the rest of the fleet trying to slow down the Borg, to what we've seen those ships do during the Dominion War. It's space, with inertia dampeners, there's nothing to slow down even a ship as big as the Enterprise D.

      Basically it's one of those things where the ship itself has always been capable of doing those maneuvers, but they're rarely practiced for a number of reasons likely related to safety and longevity. It's like how while you normally see vans move comfortably straight and slow, there's nothing preventing them from being used to say drift around a corner at high speed provided you're not carrying anything in the back and your driver has godlike ability (there are actually racing circuits in Japan that do this). In the same way, a mostly empty Galaxy class with the galaxy's most advanced android at the helm basically unlocked the ship's maneuvering potential.

    There were some production reasons why the did the D dirty in Generations. And the most basic had to do with it's design. The Enterprise-D was designed specifically for the small screen. For the classic 4:3 CRT Television screen. And it was designed to overcome one of the most basic problems with classic television as a medium back in the day. See TV never used to be very good at portraying depth. Unlike the cinema it was very very hard to give the illusion of front to back motion. The Enterprise D and the USS Voyager models were subtly shaped to overcome this. They have a bit of forced perspective built into them. This is why the D's saucer always seems a little more squashed front to back and its nacelles always seem smaller than your brain tells you they should be. Both models were built to give the illusion of front to back motion in space on a TV screen. In much the same way the Enterprise flat round broad saucer aided in providing the illusion of banking and turning. You see a similar if cruder illusion used in the Classic Cylon Raiders from the original 1979 Battlestar Galactica.
    The problem was Cinema and its wide aspect ratio screens can easily convey depth and front to back motion. They don't need the shaping tricks to pull it off. But the model having those shaping tricks made it very difficult to properly shoot for the movie screen. As you had to get the angles and movements just right otherwise it looked weird and distorted. The model also lacked the verticality and feeling of grandeur seen in the Refit enterprise. And on top of that even the "better" 4' filming model was getting very very ragged by the time they shot Generations. Watch All Good Things on BluRay, and pay attention to the last scene. You can really see how badly the skin of the model is starting to distort and sag into itself from the heat of the internal lights over the years.
    Picard season 3 was able to make it work, because CGI has it's own bag of magic tricks. Plus I suspect they tweaked a few bits here and there to tone down the forced perspective. while at the same time it was still technically being shot for smaller screens.

    WAIT, that starbase 1 might to be based partially on Star Trek Online's Original Starbase 1, before they remade it to be the show one. and yeah, the odyssey is such an amazing ship. if anyone wants to see STO's take on How the Enterprise-F came to be and its Captain, an Andorian, Va'kel Shon, there is a story you can access at the end of the game thats an older questline where it makes its first appearence, called the Lost Dominion: the 2800. Would have been nice to get a Geordi line something like "you're gonna tear her apart if you keep this up Data!" Plus even with inertial dampeners the crew were getting a bit thrown around, if they'd had an actual crew instead of just bridge lots with drones supplying the torpedo launchers Beverly would probably have seen a LOT of injuries. I wonder if the Space Dock itself can go to warp? Like, maybe it doesn't have nacelles like a ship does, but maybe it has just a huge warp field generator system spread through its structure that, well, never gets used. Except when they move it to another location. Imagine seeing that thing rotate vertically in space until its tip is pointed at its destination, and then pulling a High Charity and warping out. LoL.
    As for that Borg Cube, the readout on the screen of size might have been a reference about 'this is what a Normal Borg Cube is sized' based on the last time that Enterprise ran into a cube, and we just didn't see the one beside it where all the numbers are x100 larger. Because I'm pretty damned sure that Megacube was made up of like, 64 or more 'normal' Cubes all mashed together and linked like Lego. So when it gets scanned, it still somewhat resembles a regular Borg Cube... just massively upscaled. So incredibly huge that even as it's destroyed, not ALL of it is able to blown up. ( I swear the top right cube corner just gets pushed out, and doesn't explode.)

      Considering the Starfleet HQ in Future Discovery does that, I reckon they’re keeping that as a later development. Bear in mind DS9 could barely get ersatz impulse thrusters to work for a few minutes, and Spacedock is a lot bigger.

    I'd like to see Star Trek the next, next Generation with Seven captioning the 1701-G.
    I think after the loss of Mars and the Utopia fleetyards, Starfleet is probably scrounging old ship hulls from their various decommissioning depots, updating them before bringing them into service, which would explain the Reliant and Gagarin classes.

    Picard's final episode did not have the Enterprise-D move like a fightercraft. It actually never exceeded 20 degrees per second turn rate, which puts it rather well in-line with what the Galaxy-class is capable of in other games such as Bridge Commander, Startrek Online, or the original show.
    The kicker is that the camera went WILD. That's why the Enterprise-D seems to be swooping around so swiftly. Not to mention, even if we do accept that kind of mobility as possible, that it was plainly said that it was highly improbable to pull off except with... maybe... an android helmsman.
    That said, had budget and circumstances allowed, I would have tried to saucer separate to get only the Stardrive in there. That large saucer was a huge liability where clearance was involved. Also, significant caveat is that no one said they actually had to maneuver super fast in there (it wasn't a moving cube) and Beverly was pretty handy with those weapons subduing anything that could deal the ship harm. Time was more of a factor on the exit; not the entry.

    • @00andJoe
      @00andJoe Рік тому +3

      Given Geordi's comments implying there were still issues being worked out with matching the Syracuse stardrive section to the Enterprise-D's saucer, I'd easily believe that saucer separation would be at best ill-advised, if not impossible.

      @ZeroB4NG build both sets. The battle bridge does doesn't have to match, its from the Syracuse. At the end after they've escaped the borg cube have Riker do a manual docking of the sections and warp out.

    Ummm, hate to break it to you, but large Starfleet ships have been pretty damn agile since DS9. Just look at a scene from Sacrifice of Angels after commercial break when the Defiant has a glam shot with the camera before smoking a Hideki and heading for a Jem'Hadar battlecruiser. There's a Galaxy doing a turn to blow up a non descript ship which was only mildly less agile than what we saw in the cube. It's not a bad thing. Star Trek has a greater mastery of mass and inertia than most other scifis. Also remember that ST ships on average are much smaller than many other scifis.

  • @Phrancis5

    Yes, kinda hated how the D moved like the Millennium Falcon and hope that doesn't set a precedent too. I'd also agree with the questionable renaming of the Titan and just the ship itself. It looks older than the already old Excelsiors, weird chunky proportions, and those new nacelles don't seem to flow with the overall design. Still more enjoyable than the previous seasons!

    • @ZeroB4NG
      @ZeroB4NG Рік тому +1

      It looks odd because it is literally a fan design that was made for the TMP era and they only slapped modern nacelles on it.
      But it is a good looking ship. ...but it is no Enterprise. I just about accepted it as a Titan after it not being the Luna Class and Riker acting like it was HIS old ship... yeah nah... and i must have missed the Memo, i thought this was the 1701-F's maiden Voyage party, look at the new awesome ship, fireworks and everything... ooops no, this one is being send to the recycler.

      @@ZeroB4NG Exactly, it just doesn't fit the era and looks so out of place against the other ships. And yeah, the way they dismissed the F was silly. Sure, this season was all about fan service, but it's not like we didn't love other trek shows that didn't have an "enterprise" hero ship. It's like a lot of trek. I loved it so much in the moment, but best not to over analyze it afterward.
